Fall 2019
“Experience the Spirit . . . Christ, Creation, Community”
Vision for a Bright Future; 2019 Strategic Plan – Gives Direction
In 2019 more than 11,500 guests will be served on the Camp Agapé site. It is a busy place. Where do those guests
come from?
== Creation Stewardship programming (ACE Ed) with school groups will serve over 6,000 students from 21 NC
counties. Nearly every school day brings a group of children to camp eager to learn, touch and experience
God’s Creation.
== Programmed Retreats like our BYG (Building Youth Groups) program are keeping young people engaged
in the church and their faith communities.
== Hosted Retreats like TEC (Teens Encounter Christ), Via de Cristo and Walk to Emmaus, along with congregation
retreats, business planning meetings, cheer squads, and more are building trust and community on our sites.
== Special Events like our annual 5K and Work Days bring people to camp.
== Summer Camp where we served about 1,000 children (including “Reach 100” campers) this summer living out
our seven major goals through our talented Christian role model staff.
Camp Agapé is in a period of its history where we could be considered thriving. Daily, staff and volunteers
follow the vision for excellence in service that has been the foundation for programs for more than 20 years. Yet, there
is a sense that God is calling us to do more. We can reach more people. We can continue to improve programming.
We can build further on what we have accomplished in the first 50 years of ministry.
The new strategic plan represents an opportunity to create a successful future for the whole ministry
that is rooted in a 50-year legacy of serving all guests at both properties for coming generations. We do all of this in
order to live out our mission of “building leaders and forming faith.”
Prioritized recommendations of the 2019 Master Strategic Plan:
1. IT Facility Upgrades. WiFi connectivity without data limits is a major goal for the Agapé site. This has become a
major issue for the function of our own office. We will also be adding connectivity at Kure Beach.
2. Construction of a new Swimming Pool at Agapé. The state of North Carolina has mandated that by the summer
of 2022 our current pool must be replaced to bring our facilities into compliance with current code. This will
involve design and new construction as we determine how best to serve our changing clientele.
3. Development of a for credit GAP year, internship program. This is a unique opportunity for “Building Leaders,”
one of our primary goals. To meet this new vision, we will need to build a new four-bedroom living unit on the
Agapé site as we partner with colleges and universities to meet a unique need.
4. Hosted Retreats. Hosted retreating is our fastest growing area of service. As a result, we are in the process of
pursuing the addition of another high comfort retreat facility similar to the current Retreat House at Agapé. We
have turned away guests due to the demand for the Retreat House. This expansion is in response to a growing
adult market.
5. Kure Beach Faith Center – re-envisioned. Over the coming four years we will attempt to define a clear purpose
for the Faith Center. Once a clear focus is established we will be poised to respond with structural changes to meet
a shifting market at Kure Beach.
Join us in this great adventure of serving the people of God. It promises to be FUN and rewarding! You will hear
more about how you can make this vision come to life in the year ahead. See more details on our website - click on

Current Waves 2019 Summer Camp Review, Grace Moments!
Activate Spirit Power!
Our theme this summer was all about the Holy
Spirit! As campers and staff played, worshiped, and
learned together in the Agapé woods and at Day
Camp sites, the Holy Spirit was at work.“The grace
of the Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the
sharing of life through the Holy Spirit be with you
all.” 2 Corinthians 13:13
Our theme verse introduced us to the TRINITY- God
the Creator, Son, and Holy Spirit. We looked at how
all three parts have played roles in our stories and
how the Holy Spirit is what connects us. We heard
that the Holy Spirit is an ADVOCATE sent to always
be with us and guide us, and we looked for ways we
could be advocates for others. God’s love is LIGHT
in our world, and through the Spirit God calls us to share that light everywhere. We experienced different ways
to pray and the Holy Spirit interceded as we asked for God’s will in our lives, and we looked at life from the per-
spective of the disciples as they were SENT OUT for change. We ended our time of camp together knowing that
the Holy Spirit was going with us wherever we went! AMEN!
A REACH 100! Blessing We received this lovely affirmation from one of our REACH 100 camper‘s parents.
“Thank you very much for having my son for camp. He had an awesome time. He said that he would like to return next
summer and wants to stay a longer period of time so he can explore more of nature and God. Again thanks very much!”
What great moments of hope and God’s grace that we get to share through the “Reach 100” program. Thank you
to all who shared gifts of clothing, backpacks, water bottles, sleeping bags, and gifts of cash to make a week of faith-
based camp possible for so many!
“The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the sharing of
Grace Moments ~ Summer camp counselors share glimpses of God’s presence at camp
“During one of the hottest afternoons of the summer we were all relieved to be having worship in the pool. It
was humid, the sun was blazing, and the air was still. As we worshiped in the water we got to the Lord’s Prayer.
We had decided on something a little different and we started the prayer in a whisper. As we started to pray a
breeze picked up, and as we got louder with each line so did the wind! We grew louder and louder until every
person in the pool was shouting “forever and ever, amen!” at the top of their lungs while the wind gusted. After
the “amen” the wind died down and we were back to the hot, still, afternoon air, but we all felt the Holy Spirit
moving through the wind and our prayer in the pool that day.”
“I had a camper one week who was a little shy. She would
talk to me and do activities, but she didn’t really jump into things
like my other girls. We were sitting together after campfire one
night when she leaned over and told me that her favorite song was
“Light the Fire.” I said I really liked it too and we moved on. Later
in the week my cabin went to zip line, and my camper on the shy-
side was hesitant to take a turn. With some encouragement from
the group she went and she loved it! At campfire that night we
sang “Light the Fire” again. She told us after that she felt the Holy
Spirit on the zipline like the “mighty rushing wind” (a line in the
song). I felt the Spirit moving in camp as I watched this camper

Summer Camp Offering & Grand Camp Current Waves
Summer Camp Offering
This year our summer staff selected two recipients for our summer offering. We chose an organization that
is in our own local community as well as an outreach organization. Our amazing summer staff shared informa-
tion about these two causes with campers and parents during every week of both our resident camp programs
and state-wide Day Camp programs.
The organization selected for our outreach offering was Camp Lutherwood in Eugene, Oregon. In April of
this year a fire destroyed a building containing their kitchen, dining area, and some lodging. We sent our of-
fering to help them rebuild and continue offering amazing Spirit-filled camp experiences to campers just like
ours! The local cause chosen for this year was FACES. (Family and Community Empowerment Services) located in
Fuquay-Varina. FACES seeks to help families and individuals in the community who are in need of financial aid
and other basic resources. Last year, FACES helped over 250 families keep their lights on, helped prevent evic-
tions, funded needed medications, and addressed other one-time emergency needs. This year’s summer camp
offering will help FACES continue to provide that much needed care to our community.
Our wonderful campers and their families, both resident and day campers, gave a total of $3,674 this sum-
mer! This gracious gift has been divided evenly in half, and both causes will be using 100% of this donation
directly for programs and projects.
Early in September, We also received a lovely

of Faith Four former Board members were recognized for their faithful service to the Board of
Directors. Audrey Surak, Andrew Buck, and Fred Black served terms that had come to their
conclusion. Pastor Mark Drengler left his call in Cary to take a parish in Shawano, WI. Each
of these great leaders left a positive impact on our ministry and we thank them each for their time commitment and skills.
Stan Lowe was recognized with the Eagle Award for outstanding volunteer service at Camp Agapé. He has been a true
messenger from God as John Griffin, Site Manager, has successfully battled cancer during this past year.
The David L. Castor Award for commitment and service to our ministry was proudly shared with Karen Muse, Cary, NC.
Karen has guided her children to our summer camp programs and serving on summer staff. She serves on our Board of
Directors currently as treasurer and has led several groups of volunteers in various projects at camp. Karen has been a
blessing to our ministry.

Current Waves REACH 100! Legacy Club Members
“Reach 100” 60 children who are homeless or in severe financial need came to camp this
summer totally FREE of charge thanks to many who gave gifts in support of “Reach 100.”
What a great community outreach, partnership and evangelism tool to proclaim the
Gospel! “Reach 100” is the most dynamic program we have ever had the privilege of
sharing in our partnership with people like you. This one-year pilot program will be
heading into its fifth summer in 2020. Help us reach out to 75 children to get a free
week of camp in the summer of 2020. Join us to make it happen!
In the fall of 2017 “Reach 100” was recognized with a national award for the
most innovative outreach program in the country at the National Outdoor Ministries
Conference. July of 2018 the nationally distributed magazine “Living Lutheran” ran
a two-page article about “Reach 100” and its unique outreach into the community.
Why is this program important? “Reach 100” gives kids hope and shares God’s love with them. Our camp
programs nurture campers through the positive Christian role modeling of our staff, build their self-value,
and give children a chance to be creative and have fun in a safe environment. If together we want to build a
more positive environment for our communities, we first must start by building the self-value of our children
and youth.

Kure Beach Room Remodel – We made it!
Thanks to four special gifts we have the funds to complete the
renovations for the remaining four rooms at the Kure beach Faith Center.
== An anonymous match gift was given to cover the two rooms
That gift was matched with the following two generous gifts:
== A gift in memory of John Swanson, member at Lord of Life, Garner,
by his family
== A faithful gift by Rev. John and Lanie Nagle, Cary
Our beach staff along with Betty Huggins, project supervisor, will be
working toward a May completion.
Can you or your congregation help? We are looking for skilled helpers
to replace lights, paint, replace sink vanities, hang new blinds and lay
laminate flooring. Please contact us if you or your group might be able
to help.
Contact Randy, Executive Director, to get connected to the project.

Hurricane Dorian Impact
We are thankful to be able to report minimal damage at Kure Beach as a result of Hurricane Dorian. We lost
a few shingles, down spouts and much of the soffit was blown out, but considering the vicinity of the storm we
were blessed. Thank you to all who kept our ministry in your prayers.

#GivingTuesday, taking Permit No. 1910
place December 3rd, is a Raleigh, NC
global day of giving that
harnesses the collective
power of individuals,
communities, and organizations to encourage giving
and to celebrate generosity worldwide. Every year,
on #GivingTuesday, millions of people across the
globe mobilize to show up, give back, and change
their communities. The goal is to create a massive
wave of generosity that lasts well beyond that day,
and touches every person on the planet.
This year Agapé V Kure Beach Ministries is seeking
to raise $4,000 on #GivingTuesday. This $4,000 will go
directly to nurturing and expanding one of the great-
est gifts our ministry gives: positive Christian role
models as leaders in the church and in the world. We
are celebrating 45 years of Building Leaders (goal #5)
through our programs. Over the past 15 years we can
boast 24 young adults who have gone on to be leaders
in the church as pastors. To celebrate 45 years of
building leaders, we are seeking gifts of $15, $30,
$45 and $450.
After a day of Thanksgiving, feasting, family,
and maybe shopping till you drop, please consider
making a gift that will impact many. Help us to
continue “Building Leaders” in the church and in the
world with your #GivingTuesday gift.
