Community Impact
For over a century, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority,
Incorporated has served her community through
impactful initiatives that focus on education, health,
finance, and social justice. Launching New Dimensions
of Service (LNDS) combines traditional programs with
new concepts that are designed to improve the lives of those we serve. To "be
of service to all mankind" through innovative, high-impact programs has been
the hallmark of our sisterhood since 1908.
For almost 30 years, the ladies of Rho Mu Omega chapter have been committed
to honoring the legacy of Alpha Kappa Alpha by donating their time and
talents to the betterment of the Washington, DC Metropolitan community.
Breathing life into our 2017 mission, "A Sisterhood of Service Impacting Our
Community", Rho Mu Omega implements the sorority's international
programs on a local level focusing on Educational Enrichment, Health
Promotion, Family Strengthening, Environmental Ownership, and Global
Impact.
Target I:
Educational Enrichment
Through ASCEND℠ , Rho Mu Omega motivates, engages and assists high
school students in reaching their maximum potential. Focusing
on Achievement, Self-Awareness, Communication, Engagement,
Networking, and Developmental Skills, about 25 students in
the ASCEND℠ Program participated in the following workshops:
Building Your Brand
Mental Health and Stress Management
Preparing for College
Finances and Money Management
Volunteer work and Community Service
Careers in STEM
Ensuring students have the proper school supplies helps contribute to over
learning outcomes. Rho Mu Omega has donated over 350 backpacks through
our One Million Backpacks℠ initiative. Recipients include: Barnard
Elementary School, DC Prep Charter School, hurricane Harvey and Maria
survivors, and Friends of the Superior Court of the District of Columbia.
Over 40 students were able to attend the 21st Annual HBCU college tour in
support to our Think HBCU℠ initiative. Students visited Spelman, Morehouse,
Clark Atlanta, South Carolina State, Claflin, Winston-Salem, North Carolina
Central, Johnson C. Smith, Hampton, and Virginia State University.
Target II:
Health Promotion
Through innovation and engagement, Rho Mu Omega promotes health
awareness in three areas: Alzheimer's Disease, Heart Disease and Stroke and
Mental Illness.
Rho Mu Omega celebrated The Longest Day to bring awareness of Alzheimer's
Disease by cycling for 16 hours in spin classes as well as bike riding throughout
DC parks and our neighborhoods. Raising over $7,200 for awareness and
research and generation hundreds of social media "likes", the chapter was
recognized as the leading AKA fundraiser both locally and nationwide by the
Alzheimer's Association.
Pink went Red in February as we raised awareness of Heart Disease. Blood
pressure screenings, Zumba, a prayer call, and a heart health happy hour
touched over 300 lives and raised over $500 for research. The chapter also
hosted a 3-mile Billy Goat Trail hike, a hydrospin class, and partnered with
BikeShare DC for a biking tour of the Washington monuments.
#iamstigmafree served as the theme for Rho Mu Omega Mental Health
programs. Social media campaigns reached more than 200 people and over 20
DC students created PSA's that included poems, raps, skits, and dances to
educate their peers on mental health.
Target III:
Family Strengthening
Alpha Kappa Alpha’s Family Strengthening Programs target critical issues
facing many families, including lack of food and shelter, appropriate seasonal
clothing, and financial means.
In 2017, our Childhood Hunger Initiative helped to feed over 150 families in
transitional homes through an MLK Day of service project in conjunction with
Xi Omega and Xi Zeta Omega chapters of Alpha Kappa Alpha. Our partnership
with Bright Beginnings allows Rho Mu Omega to assist with re-stocking the
food pantry, twice a year, by providing over 250 non-perishable food items.
Over 100 families are serviced and homeless infants and toddlers are able to
have access to nutritional foods.
Rho Mu Omega members collected and donated a record number of Seasonal
Wraps℠ including hats, gloves, socks, scarves, coats, sweaters and
other warm and cold weather clothing articles for families in need.
Fiscal Responsibility helps families increase their understanding of budgeting,
basic financial planning and benefits of home ownership. Through a social
media campaign spearheaded by DC Government, Rho Mu Omega shared fiscal
responsibility tips to the DC community.
Target IV:
Environmental Ownership
Every child deserves the right to access a safe place to play. Partnering with
Orr Elementary School in Southeast Washington, DC, members of Rho Mu
Omega helped to revitalize, restore and refresh the playground. As a part of
the 1908 Playground Initiative, flowers were planted, mulch was laid, bushes
were pruned, and garbage disposed to create an environment that enhances
the play experience for the children of Orr and its community.
Reduce, Reuse, Recycle is the mantra for Acts of Green. From using composted
culinary utensils (plates, forks, and knives) to properly sorting and disposing of
plastic, glass and aluminum waste, Rho Mu Omega works hard to reduce its
carbon footprint. Our 4th annual Shred Day allowed the community to shred
and recycle over 100 pounds of paper and electronic equipment and offered the
opportunity for the chapter to forge a new community partnership with Alice
Deal Middle School. And lastly, the Anacostia River and its tributaries is one
of the nation's capital most treasured natural environments. Members helped
to clean up various areas of the Anacostia by disposing of waste that
contributes to the river pollution.
Target V:
Global Impact
Alpha Kappa Alpha has always had a global footprint and Rho Mu Omega
extends that footprint across the ocean and seas. As a part of our continued
efforts to support the goals of AfriCare, Rho Mu Omega adopted a Ghanaian
village, The Village of Abidjan Nkwanta, Kumassi, Ghana in Kumassi, Ghana.
Rho Mu Omega has supplied over 100 Pillow Case dresses, backpacks,
toiletries, and children's books to the village.
Our UNA-USA collaboration has provided our ASCEND students with the
opportunity to participate in mini UN simulations as outlined in the UNA-USA
curriculum. Impacting the lives of young adults and challenging them to think
outside of their immediate world, the simulations focus on key areas that are
of global concern: geoscience, climate change, and girls in education.
UN Day provided an educational opportunity for members of the community to
learn more about the refugee crisis. Working in conjunction with Xi Omega
and Xi Zeta Omega chapters, an audience of over 100 participants learned of
the struggles and challenges of fleeing your home land and starting anew in a
"foreign" place.
Partnerships
In order to execute efficient and productive programs, Rho Mu Omega
partnered with several local organizations to assist with the
implementation of the Launching New Dimensions of Service programs.
These mutually beneficial relationships helped to promote service and
community outreach throughout each ward in Washington, DC

Scholarship Impact
Our educational scholarship funds support high school graduates from the
District of Columbia Public Schools (DCPS) to continue their education at
Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU). Four $2,000
scholarships are awarded to students who demonstrate academic excellence,
leadership skills and community service and are accepted and enrolled in an
HBCU their freshman year.
In addition to awarding scholarships to recent high school graduates, our
scholarship funds also support prior awardees who are continuing to
matriculate at an HBCU. Each year, students are eligible to receive $1,000 for
each year they are still enrolled. Most recipients requesting the continuing
fund maintain a 2.5 or higher grade point average.
