Community Impact

For over a century, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority,

Incorporated has served her community through
impactful initiatives that focus on education, health,

finance, and social justice. Launching New Dimensions
of Service (LNDS) combines traditional programs with
new concepts that are designed to improve the lives of those we serve. To "be

of service to all mankind" through innovative, high-impact programs has
been the hallmark of our sisterhood since 1908. For almost 30 years, the ladies

of Rho Mu Omega chapter have been committed to honoring the legacy of

Alpha Kappa Alpha by donating their time and talents to the betterment of
the Washington, DC Metropolitan community.

Target I:

Educational Enrichment

Through ASCEND℠ , Rho Mu Omega motivates, engages and assists high

school students in reaching their maximum potential. Focusing
on Achievement, Self-Awareness, Communication, Engagement, Networking,

and Developmental Skills, about 25 students in the ASCEND℠ Program
participated in the following workshops:

Building Your Brand
Mental Health and Stress Management

Preparing for College
Finances and Money Management

Volunteer work and Community Service

Careers in STEM

Ensuring students have the proper school supplies helps contribute to over

learning outcomes. Rho Mu Omega has donated over 350 backpacks through

our One Million Backpacks℠ initiative. Recipients include: Barnard
Elementary School, DC Prep Charter School, hurricane Harvey and Maria

survivors, and Friends of the Superior Court of the District of Columbia.

Over 40 students were able to attend the 21st Annual HBCU college tour in
support to our Think HBCU℠ initiative. Students visited Spelman, Morehouse,

Clark Atlanta, South Carolina State, Claflin, Winston-Salem, North Carolina
Central, Johnson C. Smith, Hampton, and Virginia State University.

Target II:

Health Promotion

Through innovation and engagement, Rho Mu Omega promotes health
awareness in three areas: Alzheimer's Disease, Heart Disease and Stroke and

Mental Illness.

Rho Mu Omega celebrated The Longest Day to bring awareness of Alzheimer's
Disease by cycling for 16 hours in spin classes as well as bike riding throughout

DC parks and our neighborhoods. Raising over $7,200 for awareness and

research and generation hundreds of social media "likes", the chapter was
recognized as the leading AKA fundraiser both locally and nationwide by the
Alzheimer's Association.

Pink went Red in February as we raised awareness of Heart Disease. Blood
pressure screenings, Zumba, a prayer call, and a heart health happy hour

touched over 300 lives and raised over $500 for research. The chapter also
hosted a 3-mile Billy Goat Trail hike, a hydrospin class, and partnered with

BikeShare DC for a biking tour of the Washington monuments.

#iamstigmafree served as the theme for Rho Mu Omega Mental Health
programs. Social media campaigns reached more than 200 people and over 20

DC students created PSA's that included poems, raps, skits, and dances to
educate their peers on mental health.

Target III:

Family Strengthening

Alpha Kappa Alpha’s Family Strengthening Programs target critical issues
facing many families, including lack of food, shelter and financial means. Rho

Mu Omega has launched community based Childhood Hunger Initiative in
partnership with local agencies, food banks and community pantries. Rho Mu

Omega partnered with both the Backpack Project (serving the families of the

Cedar Heights community) and Bright Beginnings. Our Family Seasonal
Wraps℠ Program collects and donates hats, gloves, socks, scarves, coats,

sweaters and other seasonal wraps for families in need. Through Fiscal
Responsibility Programs we work with partner organizations and families to

help increase their understanding of budgeting, basic financial planning and
benefits of home ownership

Target IV:
