POETRY

Poetry

Grace Williams

A Violin concerto I hear
with depth of sound, and melodic,
symphonic poem “Penillion”,
“Welsh Nursery Rhymes” that frolic -
maybe Sibelius brings a hint,
touch Mendelsohn, and from Elgar,
Vaughan Williams has added a mood -
but heard uniquely from her?
Grace Williams, in Barry at home,
perfectionist but self-doubting,
in life knew not acclaim for her worth,
short-measure list of recording:
but listen, listen to her strength
in tune and harmony, travel
where surging chords can reveal
a world, and vision unravel.
The Brecon Hills together curled,
leap-frogging peaks of mountains,
Wye Valley woods of mystery,
or Pembroke rollers’ fountains?
Long swollen Severn’s white-froth rabids,
or nameless spring bright dancing,
lone buzzard hovering on the moors,
dark castles foes awaiting?
Or valleys terrace lined with homes
beneath the smoke from the chimney
of pit, of engine’s traffic shunt
past heather hills of Rhymney?
Her conjured images lay
in trumpet, strings and in voices
that resonate all of Wales
through song chords, symphony noises. U

only in spring or summer? Some NGS gardens have openings late
in the season and inspire you to look anew at the strong shapes
of architectural plants or the delicate tracery of bare branches.
Treffgarne Hall, set in a stunning location near Haverfordwest, is
planted for year-round interest. The four acre garden contains a
walled garden full of borderline hardy exotics as well as large scale
sculptures which look wonderful in snow. At Llwyngarreg, near
Whitland, willow structures look effective all year round as do
many of the rare plants such as bamboos, roscoeas and hedychiums
and an extensive grass bed.

Up and down the country NGS gardeners will be looking back
with satisfaction at the fruits of their hard work, not just their
splendid gardens but also the large sums of money raised to benefit
the charities supported by the National Garden Scheme. The simple
but delightful idea of opening gardens for charity was thought
up by Elsie Wragg, a keen gardener of course and a member of
the Queen’s Nursing Institute, a body set up in Victorian times
to promote district nursing. In 1927 over six hundred gardens
opened at the cost of a shilling a head, raising over eight thousand
pounds, equivalent to about two hundred and fifty thousand
pounds today. The scheme has gone from strength to strength with
record donations in 2016 of £3 million to the nursing charities
such as Marie Curie and Macmillan that it still supports. Last year

Horatio’s Garden, Salisbury

GARDENING

the NGS gave £130,000 to Horatio’s Garden, a charity set up in
memory of a young man from Salisbury, with the aim of planting
gardens to benefit hospital patients, particularly those undergoing
long term treatment. Two gardens in both the spinal units which
support patients from Wales, namely the Midland Spinal Centre in
Oswestry and the Llandough Hospital in South Wales are planned
and funding is ongoing. The Oswestry garden has been designed
by Bunny Guinness and will appropriately incorporate a magnolia
tree planted by Dame Agnes Hunt, a founder of the hospital and a
firm believer in the benefits of fresh air. Bunny’s imaginative design
will wrap around the existing unit and its focus will be a social
area with a garden room which patients can use all year round - it
even has a wood burning stove - and where they can be with their
families in a more home-like atmosphere. It will be bounded by a
rill to provide the calming sound of running water and there will
be a woodland pathway to explore. The garden therapy area will
have raised flower beds and a greenhouse so that the gardening
team can help patients to grow their own produce. At the side
of the unit there will be a wheelchair skills space and another
important feature will be a children’s play area. The planting in the
garden will be designed to give year round colour and interest and
nesting boxes provided for birds.

The Horatio’s Garden charity recognises what we gardeners
already know, namely that gardening is good for you, both
physically and mentally. Planting a bulb to flower in spring, seeds
to flower in summer or even a tree that will take years to grow to
maturity encourages us to look forward and hope for the best. A
thought to console yourself with when your back is aching from
too much digging! U
