10 Langworth Local September 2023 Teapot pourings. Energy can neither be created nor destroyed. For those that have a classical education such as I through Longford secondary Modern School you will know that energy cannot be created nor destroyed, it merely changes form. The relevance of that is like burning wood to create electricity. Wood contains one third of the energy of coal or oil. Drax power station take note. I thought of this the other day when I was asked by ‘management’ to remember to put a second load of washing on the line which she indicated was already well full. The washing line only has a certain capacity (amount of energy if you will) and what I had to do was use its energy, the washing line available, to better advantage, more efficiently. I took some photos to make the point. You see it is alright giving instructions to do something providing you have the capacity to do it, I think you would agree. At first sight the washing line was full. There was no spare capacity. But surely that was because the first lot of washing was placed on the line in a less efficient manner than it could have been. This was especially so as we were asking for further washing to go on the line. By using science and moving the washing up closer together there was then room for the additional load to be hung out to dry with no loss of efficiency.
Langworth Local September 2023 11 Having said that there is only so much extra capacity that we can generate. If we apply this science as my classically educated mind determines and our current capacity to make electric buses (over 55,000 units) and electric cars (over 32 million vehicles) by 2030 or even 2035 / 2050 with current production of buses of a little over 800 a year capacity and a similar small fraction of motorcar units in current production. No matter how much we move the washing up there will not be enough washing line left to complete the task. By The Owner of the teapot Soduko 2 4 7 1 5 8 8 3 4 2 2 3 6 4 3 9 1 5 3 2 9 7 1 5 1 3 8 8 3

Langworth Local September 2023 15 The last page This is the last page of items I found on my book shelves when tidying up . Land for the use and benefit for the labouring poor April eighteenth 1831. Agreed this day at a vestry meeting in the parish church at Barlings that John Ghest with the consent of his landlord give up to the overseers of the poor of this parish certain lands in his occupation for the use and benefit of the labouring poor not to exceed one rood each labourer at the yearly rent of ten shillings each rood including rates and that the said overseers shall be answerable for the rents of the said land to the land lord of the estate for the time being or to his agent as witness our hand Richard Cartwright, John Ghest, James Lane, William Knowles. April eighteenth 1831. Agreed this day at a meeting of the parish of Barlings that the labouring poor belonging to this parish shall rent for gardens not exceeding one rood each at the yearly rent of ten shillings per rood payable at two half yearly payments October 11th. And April 6th. Each year to the overseers of the same parish for the time being and in default of payment by anyone of the said garden then the said overseers shall have the power to re let the said gardens to whosoever the parishioners shall think proper and if the said landlord or parishioners shall want to build on the said land then anyone occupying the same shall give up to the said landlord or overseers as they may think proper in witness thereof we the occupiers of the said gardens do agree Edmund wilcock, William Thompson , George Codd (his mark) Thomas Sylvester (hismark) Daniel Dawkins (his mark) William Sharpe (his mark) Thomas Coulton (his mark) John Leversidge (his mark) Richard Knowles, Joseph Thompson, John Dawson, Francis Willington, Thomas Tye. The above signatures and marks are made in the presence of me William Ghest. I find the above item fascinating and it does give an insight on what life was like in Langworth in the 1830’s . Who were the labouring poor and why were they poor, A look at the censuses for the 1800’s for Barlings shows that a lot of the men were agricultural labourers .I suspect they were day labourers only getting work when it was available just like the zero hours contract we have today. The only ones that would have regular jobs would have been the Waggoner’s who looked after the horses. You will see that six of them signed by ’his mark’ which means they were unable to write possibly never attended school. John and William Ghest were farmers and are buried in Barlings church yard. Fourteen men signed up to take an allotment but were there others who could not afford the ten shillings a year rent. Quite a lot of money for those days. Saddletramp Editors Note: I wonder where in the Parish these were located

Langworth Local September 2023 21 Vicar’s Blog Dealing with disappointments and their consequences can be so difficult at times, can’t it? We all discover that in life and I have certainly discovered it in my 17 years of ministry. Things I thought would always be, are no longer. That is very true in the Diocese of Lincoln at the moment as we have embarked on a programme of change under the heading of ‘Time to Change Together’. Before the pandemic, the Diocese (covering Lincolnshire, North East Lincolnshire and North Lincolnshire) came to the view that it needed to reorganise. There are approximately 630 church buildings in the Diocese, many of which have very small congregations, and sadly the pandemic has accelerated the closure or temporary closure of a few of them. Worshipping congregations have decreased in size and inevitably the income that is required to pay a stipend (salary) to clergy has reduced. This has meant a major review of all sorts of aspects of life in the Diocese – its finance, assets and investments; how we bring about growing church numbers; how paid clergy are deployed; how lay ministers are deployed; what worship can be supported and where; what central services of the church can be financed in order to support the legal and safeguarding functions of the church…. And so it goes on…. It is major change. The outcome of all of these discussions is beginning to bite in parishes. The number of paid clergy in the Diocese is now down to 84 (from 125 in 2020). In 2022 parishes were asked to covenant finance in order to cover the costs of paid ministry through to 2025 and this now determines the number of paid clergy in the Deanery, which runs from Glentham, through Welton Dunholme and Scothern, south to Greetwell and Cherry Willingham, round to Burton and through Nettleham and up the A15 to Fillingham; 27 church communities, to be covered eventually by 3 paid Priests (carrying one vacancy currently) plus those who give of their time having ‘retired’ alongside Lay Ministers. It is unlikely that this will change in the near future, and it means that many churches do not have a member of the clergy resident among them. I recognise that this is not ideal, but it is where we are. It will be further complicated when I retire in January 2024, however, it is likely that I will be replaced, but whoever is my replacement will be given additional responsibilities as well as the Parishes here. It is incumbent on all of us who wish to see healthy churches at the heart of our communities to support in whatever way we can. If you think you can help, contact your local churchwarden, or someone you know who goes to church – I am sure they will point you to the right people. Blessings Revd Canon Penny Green, Rural Dean slbparishoffice@gmail.com
