2 Langworth Local December 2023 Well! What a month we’ve had in the village. Where did all that water come from? Our village is creating its Emergency Plan—and is looking for people to join the team to create and implement it in case of another emergency. The Chair of the Parish Council expresses his thanks to those that helped during the flooding. There is plenty going on in and around our village—Wragby have a Christmas Market, great for gifts and food— there is Bingo and the traditional light switch on at the Memorial Hall— Cherry Willingham have a festive Quiz— the Church services for December and January are listed inside and we have Tea Pot Pourings featured article. There is a piece on the art of staying safe with your mobile phone and much, much more. On a personal note, I hope that how ever you spend Christmas it’s a time of rest and peace. See you all in the February edition regards The Editor https://www.facebook.com/Langworth-Local-103816455696937 ©LangworthGroupParishCouncil no replication without permission

7 Langworth Local December 2023 Vicar’s Blog What a couple of months it has been! I wonder if you’ve had a moment where you’ve watched the news or read the paper and seen what’s going on in the Middle East or even closer to home and felt the absence of anything hopeful. I think we all have that underlying need to have hope, the sense that things are going to improve and get better. Sometimes it appears to be in short supply! Christmas is the time when we remember that God came down to a broken and hurting world, stepping into the mess to bring us hope, peace, love and joy. The hope of joy, indeed the hope of Advent couldn't settle anywhere other than with Jesus. God in human form, come to earth to show us love, to bring hope and peace and joy. God loves you...just as you are. He offers to you a hope forthe present and the future. As we enjoy time catching up with friends and family over the next few weeks and the Christmas period itself, I wonder where you will find hope, and who you might offer hope to? That is what we offer you this Christmas – something deeper. The invitation of God to come and look, come and see this Christ-child in a new light and new way – to focus back on the birth of Jesus and to consider it in relation to your own life, love and eternity. Come and join in as we celebrate His meaningful birth. May you know God’s richest blessings this Christmas and new year. Revd Jess Revd Jess Bellshaw. 12 Langworth Local December 2023 Teapot Pourings Is your rear end lit up? We drive our cars with great alacrity day and night with our automatic travel lights automatically illuminating our presence. “See and be seen” is it a pertinent mantra that is so important during the winter months. Perfect bliss in a safe environment. ‘AI’ at its best. But is it safe? Are we under an understandable delusion that when those white lights are shining at the front of our vehicle the red lights at the rear are also illuminated. Are they; those rear lights, illuminated? The answer unfortunately for many vehicles is that whilst the front daylight travel lights are on, there may be no rear light illuminations to compliment them. Our rear end is exposed to certain danger. It only took three years to discover this fact. Perception is a great thing. If the front lights are on the red lights at the back must follow suit. What if they do not? The adage “don’t confuse me with the facts; it is what I perceive that is the truth” could never be truer. When you are driving in heavy rain, fog, mist or even at night in a well-lit street, do you put your driving lights on so that those that are following you know you are there? It is a very valid question. Because we are so used to getting into our car, turning on the ignition and driving home on the assumption that the rear lights are illuminated ignorant that we are dangerous to ourselves and to other road users. Easy enough to joke. Next time you go to your car you might turn the ignition on and examine your rear. Just see if those rear lights are on. If they are not and it is dusk or misty or any of those things that we’ve mentioned above then you might please turn the main light switch on and have a safe journey. Some of us have been under the wrong impression for years, driving with an unlit rear. 13 Langworth Local December 2023 Suspicious text messages – SmiShing Have you ever received a text message that you weren't sure about? Maybe it asked you to "verify" your personal or financial details? SMiShing is when a scammer texts you asking for personal or financial information. The message may appear to be from a legitimate company, like a mobile phone provider or bank, but legitimate companies never ask you to provide sensitive information by text. Don’t reply, just delete. Be wary of clicking on links and remember your bank will never email or text to ask for your PIN or password. You can report suspicious text messages by forwarding them to 7726. More tips for keeping your mobile phone safe: • Keep your phone’s operating system updated with the latest security patches and upgrades. Your operating system provider normally sends these. • Never give your mobile banking security details, including your passcode, to anyone and don’t store them on your phone. • For added security set up a password or PIN to lock your mobile. • Just like a computer, you can get antivirus tools for your mobile; use a reputable brand. Some banks offer free antivirus software for their customers’

He has raised serious concerns and issues with WLDC around the fire dangers of this type of installation. The Parish Council agreed to support these concerns. The minutes of the meeting held on 3rd October 2023 were approved as a true record and signed. A report was provided of all income and expenditure throughout October, and it was agreed to reimburse Cllr P Bowser for paint purchased to treat the bus shelters. An estimated precept figure of £28367.90 will be submitted to WLDC in November. The Parish Council meeting in January will see Councillors discuss and agree a budget for 2024/25, and this budget will inform the final precept figure to be submitted to WLDC by the end of January. 22 Langworth Local December 2023 Union Jack Protocol—Teapot Pourings I noted during many occasions that a significant number of households were “in distress”. The UK flag is correctly flown with the wide white strip, like full cream milk cream, to the top. A nation’s flag is always represented as if the flag pole is to the left and the flag streaming ( flying) to the right. To fly the flag with the narrow white bar uppermost is to fly it ‘upside down’ and historically indicates a significant state of distress. Confused? I hope not. I also hope that this is helpful and not seen as being pedantic. If the reader does the same with an American flag my point is made
