log19/AW06 fissure theme; Temporary Shelter Installation | scooter shelter _Jakarta, Indonesia academic work; 4rd year 2019 supervisor; Dani Hermawan 06
Fissure is a temporary shelter installation project located in Kota Tua, Jakarta. The design aims to create a scooter shelter that able to emphasize historical values of Jakarta. The design works as a memorial to resemble the history of Kota Tua by creating a platform with its main focus in the middle of Fatahillah Fountain at the center of the plaza. Fatahillah Square in Kota Tua , Jakarta was set as the site of the project, since it has unique atmoshphere and rich history of the site. While the square almost always seem to be lively with activities. Along the way, some monuments or statues have lost its respects and values gradually. In this sense, the design is about a reminder for the people, as in this land of happiness, there used to be wars and a lot of things happened exactly in this ground where they are standing right now. The design comes from the ground that sheltering people as if they are standing and safe right now due to the work of the veteran that won the wars and sheltering them. Using twisted cracked tiles as the facade to show the people that the history of the hardworking result has gradually forgotten and lost. Morphology
The basic form adapted from fluidity of time which creating 4 arches on each side to create transparancy for everyone inside / outside of the shelter. To emphasize the morphology of the shelter, it is twisted by 90° from the middle using a bounding box. The shelter is consist of 2 layers, the first layer as the structural base which holds the facade and the second layer works as the facade of the shelter final model ( maquette ) Despite the modern form, the shape integrated with the surroundings as the vocal point of the site to shows the modernity on historical values by creating a frame to portrait the monument as something new. The existing space has its own center axis since then, and this shelter followed the existing axis to create uniformity in the large space provided.
“The design uses tesselation as the fabrication technique which adapting to the concept and the form. All the panels are extruded perpendicular to the face of the surface that will create the gap within each of the panels to depict a crack and a fissure of the history of Kota Tua.”
Fragmented The result of the organic and irregular form, it needs a lot of supports and it increases as the object that needs to be printed getting bigger. The first option was inefficient and taking too much time and cost for supports that almost takes 127 hours for 1000 gr. The second option was dividing the objects into four parts to lighten and decrease the amount of supports it needed. The second option took 9 hours for each parts and only half the amount of weight of the first option, Then each part will be installed like puzzle pieces. The fabrication was set on using the second option as it was more efficient compare to the first option. The process was using lunchbox to create subdivisions for the paneling of the facade. The panels are in the shape of hexagonal as it is twisted along the bounding box which is adapting to the initial pattern of the facade. Learning to execute a design from 1:1 scale is very important and crucial in real life, however, it is also important to learn about fabricating a design from a smaller scale to make a lot of design options and prototype to achieve greater results in more efficient and effective way.

The plan is made to have equally balanced qualities to both users which the first floor works as a public open area and the second floor as private area. Due to the limited space, the left form uses steep roof as a strategy to play with the degrees of daylight to gain as much as natural light into the house. As well by using open plan and big openings, the room will appear bigger in small space. The square openings are placed specially according to human perspective, users activity and programs while anticipating the entry of natural light into the spaces. And when the night comes, these window boxes will appear like lightframes in the dark. Lightframes 1 2
