President’s
Message…

Delta Sigma Theta Sorority - A Sisterhood called to Serve: Volume 22
Transforming Lives, Impacting community Spring 2020
"Thus FAITH and HOPE and LOVE last on......"

Greetings my Dear Sorors,

By this time, each of you should have received this latest mandate from our National President,
Soror Beverly Smith, offering direction for Chapters as we attempt to finalize this chapter
year: "Each chapter is mandated to be in compliance with local/state/federal government
guidelines during the COVID-19 crisis.”
Prior to the Governor's latest mandate, it was necessary to begin thinking "outside the box" for
options RE: the remainder of activities, and then, even some of those plans had to be 're-
worked’! With that being said, please read the March 31, 2020 Minutes of the Executive Board,
and, as always, we ask for your support of the decisions presented.
Sorors, these are difficult times, and different times. As Christians, we must remember to
accept what we can change and what we can not. Therefore, let us not forget the significance of
the strength and power within our ranks because of His favor on our lives.
The good news is that this sorority year has been filled with so many great moments of our
service to others. The better news is, that as we self-isolate in the comfort of our homes, we can
still personify His love to others through various medians. But, the best news of all, for those
who believe, ..."His Grace is Sufficient'!
Thank you SO much for your Delta love and support these past four years, and, I am forever
humbled by it!
Finally, I pray for your continued optimism for our chapter, our city, our nation, and this world!

Guided by His Faith,
Virginia

HAC Quarterly News

By Lisa Crump

On February 8, 2020 our chapter, in partnership with The Peninsula Bar Association and First
Baptist Church of Hampton, held our first seminar on Estate Planning and Elder Care. We had
over 30 people in attendance and the presenters provided a wealth of information on Wills,
Trust, Estate Planning and Elder Care (Long Term Care). A few important take a ways from
the seminar:
Estate Planning:
•The difference between a Will verses a Trust (A Will speaks for you at death,.. A Trust speaks for you now)
•Why have a Will or Trust….You decide who gets what
•What happens if you don’t have a will or trust…..The state will decide who gets what (fees can deplete funds)
•Can you have a will and a trust---YES!
•In Virginia, a divorce can cancel a Will
•Public or Private….A Will is a public document, A Trust is private
•Estates with less than $50,000 in assets (excluding a home) can skip probate
•Have a lawyer to draft your Will or Trust…Do it yourself templates (although cheap and convenient) they do not
comply with State Law
•Review your Will or Trust every three years or sooner should circumstances change
•Leave a successor of your will or trust who can handle the responsibility, not someone out of obligation because
of their relationship to you
•Don’t name anyone under 18 as a beneficiary. Name a guardian until the person is of age
Elder Care:
•The average cost for nursing home care is $8K per month
•Th average cost for Long Term Care is $172K per year

Having a Will and/or Trust…The Goal….TO LEAVE A LEGACY, GENERATION AFTER GENERATION!
