CN INSIDER

The month of October was an eventful month for AIESEC in University of Kelaniya.
The impactful events of SUWA , HAY and the PD and PR summit were held during

the month.
Further, the Children’s day program of SUWA was able to make a tremendous impact
with the participation of more than 500 children in Sri Lanka. The continuous
engagement and enthusiasm from the beginning to the end of the session was a
rewarding experience for all the parties who were involved with SUWA. Also the
panel discussions and webinars conducted by various distinguished facilitators

enhanced the impact created by the SUWA organizing committee.
Moreover, the first ever PD and PR Summit in CN history was organized by the
Partnership Development and Public Relations Team. The Local Committee
President stated that the summit will be a milestone of Colombo North in the

journey of becoming more sustainable in the coming years.
Also, HAY (How About Yes) is a new initiative and it is a public speaking competition
allowing youth a platform to speak up while encouraging the participants to ‘be the
voice not to the echo’. The feedback from the delegates as well as the judges was
truly amazing and encouraging for the Organizing Committee and the Executive

Board to come up with such initiatives in the future as well!
Furthermore, the Local Committee President, Dinushie Dissanayake stated how
she herself along with the Executive Board is excited for the upcoming events such

as Evolution AI, LDS and Local Committee Vice President Elections.
Evolution AI is the first collaborative event organized by AIESEC in University
of Kelaniya along with the Computer Science Students Association. The inaugural
event is exciting as this will be a rewarding and an inspiring experience to all

stakeholders involved.

executive board 11.12

In an interesting interview with the Local Committee Vice President for Outgoing Exchanges for
the term 11/12 Ms. Gayathri Mohandiramge, it was revealed how AIESEC in University of Kelaniya
was fueled by the contribution of exceptional EB members. Having hardships and struggling
to overcome challenges in the past has made our entity a strong entity with the course of time.
Overcoming challenges using the little resources that were available at the time was the primary
goal of the EB in the term 11/12 so that they could re-establish the entity with a strong leadership
body and a strong membership to ensure the sustainability of AIESEC in University of Kelaniya.
Making sure that the vision of AIESEC, which is to develop leadership, is showcased to the external
parties was one of the major challenges that the Executive Board underwent. Thus, the team worked
to showcase the impact of AIESEC and visibility too. The unique and passionate individuals in the
Executive Board were able to develop AIESEC to another level from the way it was back in the day
with their immense dedication. As the Local Committee Vice President for Outgoing Exchanges,
Ms. Gayathri and the Executive Board was determined to enhance the quality as well as the quantity

of opportunities provided for the customers to take on internships abroad.

5

ISSUE VI | OCTOBER 2021

One of the strategic initiatives that the Executive When asked to explain the term and the Executive
Board of term 11/12 implemented was to target the Board briefly, Ms. Gayathri phrased it as

strategy that they used, Ms. Gayathri stated that
since the undergraduates and graduates of the
language departments have already been exposed
to the language, what they require next is the
cultural exposure which can be gained through an
internship opportunity abroad.
Marking the achievements amidst all the hardships
in the term 11/12, the Executive Board to conduct
continuous campaigns to promote the true essence
of AIESEC and establish the idea of leadership
development within the community resulting
in a successful recruitment and an induction for
the upcoming term. In addition, this strategic
approach to the outgoing global exchanges made
the function one of the best performing functions
of AIESEC in University of Kelaniya as well.
Ms. Gayathri emphasized on the fact that being a
member of AIESEC itself does not help one in real
life. But being an active and enthusiastic member
with a vision always improves the leadership and
the personality of a person. Even in unfavorable
circumstances, as unique individuals the
Executive Board managed to become independent
and overcome challenges so that they can be
accountable for their responsibilities and take the
maximum benefit out of the AIESEC experience
for their life.

CN INSIDER

executive board 10.11

The biggest strength of the Executive Board of AIESEC in University of Kelaniya for the term 2010/11 was
that they were very unique and talented. They among themselves had a great foundation to their relationships
with each other from the beginning. As an Executive Board, their primary goal was to strive for excellence
even though they had a very challenging term since the university kept opening and closing at that time.

Therefore, it was a considerable challenge for the recruitment process.

7

ISSUE VI | OCTOBER 2021

As per the perspective of the Local Committee President for the term, their biggest achievement was that
they managed to continue exchanges with a very little number of resources, especially with a tight time
constraint. The whole Executive Board and the membership has worked hard to facilitate many Exchange
Participants and for the success of other operations. Also, the Executive Board was capable of creating a

successful leadership pipeline to ensure the sustainability of AIESEC in University of Kelaniya.

During the interview with the Local Committee President Ms Thirsha De Silva, shared the journey and
the experience of their Executive Board as a “Rollercoaster ride”. She further emphasized on the value of
utilizing the time you have efficiently and making the most out of it. She stated that one should be aware of

themselves and that people need not to be afraid to explore the world of opportunities.

“Being open to experiences is key in life!”

1. How would you define your purpose and passion?
I respect everyone around me as a person who gets to associate with diverse people from all walks
of life. As a teacher and a psychologist, I have to work with a wide range of students and clients and
I try to upload a growth mindset about them all. I don’t think I am responsible for the entire growth
and development. Nevertheless, I am able to facilitate their growth by helping them discover their

purpose, strengths and weaknesses.

19

ISSUE VI | OCTOBER 2021

2. Have you gone through hardships, if yes what
kept you going?
I am 33 years old now. In retrospect, there have been
challenges but facing the challenge and accepting
what it is can be one way to deal with it. Every good
or bad thing happening in your life is preparing you
for the next thing and for your future. When you
look back one your life, you will realize that every
challenge that you have come through is a valuable
and unforgettable lesson to your life.

3. What is one advice you would give your
undergraduate self if you had the chance to do so?
When I was thinking of quitting university, my
friend’s mum said “Don’t quit”. So I would say don’t
quit and be open to different experiences.

20

CN INSIDER

4. How do you think AIESEC helps in one in
real life?
Actually, I didn’t know what to expect in a state
university. AIESEC is able to bring out the
skills in us to the outer world and also enhance
cultural competence. Cultural competence is very
important today. Cultural competence doesn’t
just refer to different cultures but includes being
conscious of factors like gender, disability, socio-
economic differences and many more.
Being a part of this organization, we get exposed to
different areas and we get to see and learn from the
good qualities of different people. I have built long-
lasting relationships through this organization
and I have learnt a lot from these individuals and
still, I do! Also, gaining an awareness of the reality
of people, seeing the world through multiple
perspectives and experiencing the world are some
value additions of being an AIESECer.
5. What is the final message you want to give to the
readership and the membership of CN?
Use the time in university in a meaningful manner
to get to know yourself and get a clear understanding
of yourself. Explore different options and don’t be
afraid whether it’s about yourself, your job or your
sense of fashion. So I would say, explore, be open
to new experiences and to develop different skills.
