The Villain Voice, Vol. 3

Publication Q3-2

Can you tell us a bit about your background and what led you to become a youth minister? I was a part of an amazing youth ministry when I was in high school and I knew around junior year that I wanted to be a youth minister. I went to small Catholic college and majored in Theology and Catechetics (how to teach Theology) and got my first job as a youth minister in Maryland. After a couple of years, I decided to move back to North Carolina, and I was hired at St. Leo's to be the middle and high school youth minister. I did that for almost 10 years... It's kind of funny, I've been coming to Bishop sporting events, plays, and school lunches for years before I started working here. It was actually a few Bishop students who encouraged me to apply The Villain Voice FAITH FEATURE MS. FISCHER: GUIDING YOUTH WITH GRACE By: Morgan Johnston 1 Volume 3, March 2024 for the campus ministry position at Bishop. What are some of the challenges you face in your ministry, and how do you address them? There are different challenges, of varying degrees- students' interests and attitudes, balancing between lesson planning and coordinating campus ministry, being present to students when I have other work to do, et cetera. My former pastor told me that I once handled a difficult situation with “grace and humor” and it’s been my goal ever since to face challenges with that mentality. I want to see the humor in things and rely on God’s grace to overcome any challenge I face. How do you incorporate prayer and spiritual practices into your daily life? Reading the Bible every day is a big part of my prayer life. In the morning, I'll read a few chapters (depending on my current reading plan) and journal about it afterward. Right now, I’m reading through the Gospels each month. During the day, I say little prayers under my breath or in my head, like "Come Jesus," "Thank you Jesus," or "Come Holy Spirit." At some point, usually at night, I'll pray at least a decade of the rosary. How will you make Catholic teachings relevant and relatable to today's youth? Jesus is always going to be relevant because in him we find the answers to our deepest questions- What is my purpose? Who am I/What is my identity/Where does my identity come from? Am I loved? Do I matter? The best way that I know of to lead students to Christ (and the Church) is to show them the love of Jesus. I hope I do that by having cups for water, sometimes passing out food, being available for people to talk to, and the way that I interact with students. How do you approach providing pastoral care and support to young individuals facing personal challenges or crises? I always say a prayer silently in my head asking for the Holy Spirit and then I generally just listen and ask clarifying

FAITH FEATURE 2 questions. I try to offer some wisdom from someone with enough distance from high school to have a different perspective. I also think it’s really important that I make my own mental/emotional health a priority so that I’m better able to listen. What are the emotional and physical benefits students gain through acts of service? Any time you are putting the needs of others before yourself, especially when it comes to the poor or the sick, it's going to be an opportunity to grow in virtue. The difficulty is that we may be presented with the opportunity to experience the benefits from serving others, but we can also miss them because of bad attitudes or being numb to the needs of others. The real work is asking God to give you a heart for those in need and not turning away when it gets uncomfortable. The Villain Voice CATHOLIC LENTEN INSIGHTS: REFLECTIONS AND RENEWALS By: Jack Brown 3 Volume 3, March 2024 Catholics everywhere are getting ready to enter a time of reflection, confession, and renewal as Lent draws near. Lent is a somber period of spiritual reflection marked by prayer, fasting, and good deeds; it has roots in centuries-old customs. This forty-day journey encourages believers to change for personal transformation, face their shortcomings, and grow deeper in their faith. From the ashes of Ash Wednesday to the joyous celebration of Easter Sunday, Lent captures the spirit of Catholic devotion, pointing the faithful towards a revitalized sense of mission and spiritual development. How can it be beneficial for everyone? Though Lent is especially important in the Catholic tradition, people of different faiths and belief systems can relate to its themes of reflection and spiritual renewal. It follows the themes of sacrifice and redemption. Many Christians, regardless of denomination, observe Lent as a period of prayerful reflection and repentance. Throughout Lent, there are many symbolic days, including Ash Wednesday, Palm Sunday, Holy Thursday, Good Friday, Holy Saturday, and last fbut not least, Easter Sunday. All of these days are celebrated by the Catholic Church, and most are also holy days of obligation for Catholics. Here at Bishop, the largest majority of students (32.9%) want to reduce their screen time over Lent. The runner-up was giving up sweet treats (19%), and in third place (11.4%) was working out (giving up making excuses saying you can’t). FUN FACT: Did you know that the Old English word "lencten," which means "spring," is where the word "Lent" comes from? This reflects the season in which Lent is in, which normally starts in late winter and ends in early spring. Lent originates from the forty days and nights Jesus endured his temptation in the desert. This period of fasting and temptation occurred immediately after Jesus was baptized by John the Baptist. It is often seen as a time of spiritual preparation and testing for Jesus before he begins his public ministry.

CATHOLIC attempt by the leader of a druid tribe who, with God’s help, Patrick later converts to Christianity. After his triumph over the druid chieftain, he converts thousands more to Christianity both by his miracles and pedagogic aptitude. The most famous example of Patrick’s teaching is how he used the shamrock to explain the mystery of the Holy Trinity. His miracles famously include his expulsion of the snakes from Ireland, but that appears to have since been filed under ‘legends’ right next to the druid chieftain. Patrick–likely exhausted from suffering, travel, and poverty– died on March 17, 461 but not before publishing his memoir which he perhaps inaccurately titled Confessions considering how holy a man he was. Saint Josephine Margaret Bakhita was born in 1869 in Sudan. Because her uncle was the chief, she did not know suffering as a child; unfortunately, she would become very familiar with suffering throughout her life. She was kidnapped by Arab slave traders in 1877, and she would live as a slave for the next 23 years. Bakhita, which was her slave With the secularization of Christian Spring holidays like St. Valentine’s Day or even Easter, it can become easy to lose sight of God this time of year. Consequently, we saw it fit to highlight a couple of notable saints whose feast days we celebrate around this time: Saint Patrick and Saint Josephine Bakhita. Saint Patrick was born in Britain in the year 387, but fourteen years later, he would be captured by Irish pirates and taken as a slave to Ireland where he would later perform his legendary evangelization. First however, God would tell Patrick that he should really escape, and Patrick would indeed. Patrick returned to Britain and reunited with his family and lived happily ever until he had a vision where he received a letter from the “Voice of the Irish” which called him a “servant boy” and further asked him to return to Ireland. After recovering his faculties, Patrick decided to join the priesthood. Many years of study later, Saint Germanus ordained him a priest, and still later, he would be ordained a bishop by an unknown agent at the age of 43. Here begins the part of St. Patrick’s career that all of you at home know him for: his ministry in Ireland. He was met with steadfast opposition by several people, depending on which legend you believe. The author’s favorite legend tells of Patrick escaping an assassination 4 Volume 3, March 2024 name, was working for an Italian Consul, Callisto Legnani, as a nanny for his friend Mr. Augusto Michieli’s daughter when a series of moves and conflicts would put Bakhita and the daughter, Mimmina, under the care of the Canossian Siters of the Institute of the Catechumens in Venice. There, Bakhita would learn about God. More accurately, she came to know God during this time because she claimed that “’she had experienced [Him] in her heart without knowing who He was’ ever since she was a child.” Finally in 1890, she received the sacraments of initiation, was newly named Josephine, and asked Mrs. Michieli to allow her to stay with the sisters. She became a sister herself on December 8, 1896 and was assigned to a convent in Schio, Vincenza. There, she would live out the next 42 years of her life cooking, sewing, and holding the door. She came to be known for her gentleness and her smile, and she was indeed known because she would often travel to other convents to tell her story. Late in her life, she suffered a slow and painful sickness that confined her to a wheelchair, yet still her smile remained. She eventually died on February 8, 1947, and the process of her canonization began just twelve years later. SAINTS OF SPRING By: Colin Turner

CATHOLIC Saint Patrick’s and Saint Josephine Bakhita’s feast days are March 17th and February 8th respectively. Both of these days will likely have passed by the time this is published, but it is useful to reflect on the saints throughout the year, not just on their feast days. Either way these two are some heavy-hitting saints to have in your prayerful repertoire. 5 Ministers and several BIGS to help out. The 6th grade retreat was a great way for students from the feeder schools to experience Bishop, meet kids from the other schools, and strengthen their faith through learning about friendship in the Bible. The future Villains from OLG, OLM, IHM, St. Pius, and St. Leo’s went home that day with a friendship bracelet to represent what they had learned and hopefully, an excitement to attend BMCHS in just a few short years. Volume 3, March 2024 6TH GRADE RETREAT On January 17th, the halls of Bishop McGuinness Catholic High School were full of future Villains. Sixth graders from each of the feeder schools came for a day of fun, activities, and bonding time with students from other schools. The day centered around the theme of friendship and the activities reflected this focus. The students played a game of trivia with questions regarding friendship in the Bible and finished the day with a reflection in the chapel. The day was led by Ms. Fischer, Bishop’s own Campus Minister and theology teacher. She was accompanied by the Peer By: Kate Wolschon As a part of the Catholic school experience, each year we celebrate Catholic Schools Week. This is a week during which we celebrate Catholic education in America. In years past during Catholic Schools Week, we have had mass, pep rallies, and special surprises brought to us by the administration. In this article, we will share how Bishop McGuinness Catholic High School commemorated Catholic Schools Week this year. Monday, 1/29 We started the day at school on Monday with a guest speaker made trail mix, blankets, and quilts, and created cards. The day of service ended around 11:00. Before we were dismissed at noon, the teachers and administration gifted everyone ice cream sandwiches. Our guest speaker, Robin Pardella, talked about the importance of serving our community, whether it was in church or just helping around your city. She explained that it was important to be grateful for where we go to school and to find time to help serve the community around us. After the guest speaker's appearance, the Bishop students started the day of service. All grade levels participated in various activities to help serve our community. The sophomore class spent the day at Ivey-Redmond picking up trash, while other grade levels By: Yianni Skoteiniadis CATHOLIC SCHOOLS WEEK

CATHOLIC Thursday, 2/1 On Thursday, we had our first Spirit Dress day of the week. Students were allowed to wear any and all Bishop sweatshirts and sweatpants. During the day we ran on a Mass schedule because we had a pep rally at the end of the day. After the last class that day ended, all students were dismissed to the gym to attend the pep rally. During the pep rally, the senior class played against the teachers in a basketball Tuesday, 1/30 On Tuesday, we had an allschool mass. In order to fit the entire student body, the mass was held in the gym rather than in the chapel. During Mass, the choir sang as they normally do, but rather than Mr. B leading the choir, we had a special guest singer: Oscar Hernandez lead the choir while Mr. Quarles conducted all of the musicians. Wednesday, 1/31 On Wednesday during a Chaplaincy period, we had another guest speaker address the students. Father Brock, a new priest at Bishop this year, talked to us about the story of his vocation and how he became a priest. Students were split into 2 groups based on grade level and entered the Chapel to have the opportunity to listen to him tell his story. He shared a bit about his vocation, home life, upbringing, and what inspired him to become a priest in the first place. He also talked about how being a priest changed his perspective on life, and choosing to become a priest ultimately made him happier. game. In the end, the teachers were victorious, winning by 20 points. Friday, 2/2 On the final day of Catholic Schools Week, Friday, we returned to our regular school schedule. There were no special activities planned, but the students and staff enjoyed another Spirit Dress day. It was a great way to end a fun but busy week. 6 Volume 3, March 2024

CATHOLIC ASH WEDNESDAY AT BISHOP: A REFLECTION community, for coming together in shared faith and purpose. Students and teachers alike participate in acts of charity and self-denial, reflecting the spirit of sacrifice embodied by Christ's journey into the wilderness. For Catholics, this day marks the beginning of a forty-day journey toward Easter, a season of fasting, prayer, and almsgiving. It is a time to confront our weaknesses, to seek forgiveness for our sins, and to turn our hearts toward God. In a Catholic school, Ash Wednesday serves as a poignant reminder of the school's mission to nurture the spiritual growth of its students. It is a day of In the bustling corridors of a Catholic school, there is an air of solemnity that descends upon the community as Ash Wednesday approaches. For many students and staff members alike, this day marks the beginning of Lent, a period of reflection, repentance, and spiritual renewal in the liturgical calendar of the Catholic Church. Ash Wednesday serves as a poignant reminder of mortality and the call to turn back to God. The service begins with prayers and hymns, setting the tone for introspection and humility. The priest or minister delivers a sermon, urging the congregation to embrace the season of Lent as an opportunity for spiritual growth and self-examination. Words of penance and forgiveness hang in the air, inviting all to embark on a journey of repentance and renewal. Then, comes the solemn moment when ashes are imposed upon the foreheads of the faithful. The priest dips his thumb into a bowl of ashes, tracing the sign of the cross upon each person's forehead, uttering the words, "Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return." It is a stark reminder of human mortality, a symbolic gesture that humbles the soul and calls forth a spirit of contrition. In a Catholic school, the significance of Ash Wednesday extends beyond the religious rituals. It becomes a time for solemnity and introspection, of communal prayer and reflection. As the ashes fade from our foreheads, we are reminded of our shared humanity and our eternal need for God's mercy and grace. In the quiet moments of Ash Wednesday, amidst the flickering candles and bowed heads, we are invited to pause and ponder the mystery of our existence. We are called to walk the path of Lent with humility and hope, trusting in the promise of redemption that awaits us at Easter. And in the hallowed halls of a Catholic school, this journey unfolds as a sacred pilgrimage of the heart. 7 Volume 3, March 2024 By: Abigayl Maryo

The use of Blue Alerts began back in 2015 when former President Barack Obama signed its issuance into law. Adopted into North Carolina Law in 2016, Blue Alerts carry a critical meaning, only used in the worst situations. According to the NC Center of Missing Persons, “the law was named in honor of two New York City Police Detectives who were killed while sitting in their patrol car in 2014.” Blue Alerts are only issued when a law enforcement officer is seriously injured or killed, and the suspects are on the loose. Twenty-seven states, including North Carolina, have implemented the Blue Alert system to work hand-in-hand with other systems such as Amber Alerts and Silver Alerts. ENTERTAINMENT Lana by SZA The most popular upcoming album at Bishop is Lana by SZA. The tracklist has not yet been confirmed; however, the release date is said to be sometime in the middle of 2024. When released, Lana will be SZA's second studio album. This follows her first album, SOS. On February 25, 2023, SZA announced that ten new songs would be released on this album as a deluxe version of SOS. However, later in September, SZA decided that this should be an entirely new album which would be titled Lana. SZA has 66 million monthly listeners on Spotify and most of her songs are very popular on social media. Two of her top songs have over a billion streams. It has also been two years since SZA’s last album release, which would suggest why SZA’s new album would be very popular. 12 hinted at his next album, fans were immediately excited. Vultures will most likely be a very popular album for many people. Currently, Kanye has over 64 million monthly listeners on Spotify, showing that he has many fans in love with his music. The Tortured Poets Department by Taylor Swift The fourth most popular upcoming album at Bishop is The Tortured Poets Department by Taylor Swift. This album will be the 11th studio album by Taylor Swift and is set for release on April 19th. Swift announced this new album at the 66th Annual Grammy Awards on February 24th 2024 after winning Best Pop Vocal Album for her Midnights. Her new album is said to have 16 songs on the tracklist, featuring artists such as Post Malone and Florence and the Machine. Taylor Swift has been very consistent with her music creation, she has rerecorded two of her albums, Speak Now and 1989 released as Taylor’s Version. Swift has over 100 million monthly listeners on Spotify, which shows the possible popularity of this new album. Volume 3, March 2024 Vultures Vol.1,2,3 by Kanye West The second most popular upcoming album at Bishop is Vultures Volume 1, 2, and 3 by Kanye West. The tracklist has been confirmed and the release dates of these three albums are February 9th, March 8th, and April 5th. During January 2024, Kanye West created an Instagram profile in which he consistently posted pictures of Kim Kardashian and pictures that would hint at his next album. West eventually posted pictures of three different variations of Vultures, which suggested that there would be three different volumes released on different days. After Kanye The Fall Off by J. Cole The third most popular upcoming album at Bishop is The Fall Off by J. Cole. The artist had been hinting at this album since 2018, when he created the album, KOD in which the last track was titled, “1985 (Intro to The Fall Off)”. He later confirmed that he would be dropping the album eventually, but took a detour during 2021 and released the album The OffSeason instead. The Off-Season won a Grammy for the Best Rap Album of the Year and was the top song on the Billboard Top 200 list. J. Cole later teased that the album would be released on January 27, 2024, but that was not true. Now, we do not know much about the album except that it will likely be released mid-to-late 2024. J. Cole has been consistent with his music creation; he was featured on Drake’s album For All The Dogs and made a single known as “The Secret Recipe” with Lil Yachty in late 2023. Currently, J. Cole has over 43 million monthly listeners on Spotify, which shows that any fan knowing about this new album of his is obviously very excited.

ENTERTAINMENT The 2024 Super Bowl halftime show was anything but boring. Usher created some heat on the stage and in the crowds, especially when Alicia Keys appeared alongside him. Keep in mind, Usher was married just before the Super Bowl. The two together on stage was magical. They harmonized well together, they had chemistry, and overall, the song choices were impeccable. The stage holds thousands of people, but it seemed as if the two were the only thing in that crowd that mattered. Alicia Keys did stumble on her first note, but recovered beautifully. 13 SUPER BOWL HALFTIME SHOW REVIEW By: Emilee Harrell Performing the Super Bowl halftime show on the football field along with the amount of people involved in the show was an amazing spectacle. Usher is not only known for his singing, but also the way he can show off his dance moves; being wellaware that his singing is just as good makes him the perfect performer. Singing classic Usher songs and leading up to ‘Love in this Club” made the show familiar with a wide range of age groups. All together, Usher touched on R & B music and added a nice addition of hip hop. Was it better than Rihanna’s halftime show? I’m not sure. We’ll have to compare this to next year. The fashion landscape is ever evolving, and 2024 promises a refreshing mix of styles that blend comfort, sustainability, and a touch of bold experimentation. From sustainable fabrics to vibrant colors and innovative designs, this summer is poised to be a celebration of individuality and expression; this is what I can say about upcoming fashion this year as we change seasons and wardrobes. In 2024, spring and summer fashion is expected to embrace a fusion of comfort, sustainability, and bold statements. Sustainable and eco-friendly fashion is likely to continue its prominence, with an increasing emphasis on clothing made from recycled materials and environmentally conscious practices. For both men and women, relaxed and comfortable silhouettes will prevail, featuring loose-fitting clothing items that allow for ease of movement. Earthy tones and nature-inspired prints may dominate the color palette, reflecting a connection to the environment. In women's fashion, sheer and lightweight fabrics are anticipated to be popular, offering a delicate and ethereal aesthetic. Monochromatic outfits might make a statement, with individuals opting for headto-toe looks in a single color scheme for a modern and sophisticated appearance. Athleisure wear is expected to persist, with sporty elements incorporated into everyday outfits. Technical fabrics and innovative designs may find their way into both casual and formal wear, providing a blend of functionality and style. For men, a mix of casual tailoring and athleisure influences may shape the spring and summer wardrobe. Bright and bold colors could make a splash, adding vibrancy and energy to men's fashion choices. FASHION Graduation is a super exciting and pivotal point in life and what girl doesn’t love shopping? So in preparation, I found appropriate but fashionable dresses that senior girls can wear for graduation. The prices of each dress will vary between cheap, affordable, and pricey. I have provided two examples from each website I researched. With us being a Catholic school, we do have a dress code and we need to abide by the dress code and respect the policy. Our dresses must be an modest length (when buying a dress think of a style you would wear to church) and must be deemed appropriate. The first website Revolve has a variety of white dresses perfect for graduation. Revolve is more on the expensive side, typically ranging from $100-300+. Revolve is a women's brand, so all sizes run true to size. As well as having an amazing return policy, they have super fast standard shipping and the option to pay extra for overnight. THE TOP PROM TRENDS FOR THE 2024 SEASON 16 SCHOOL-APPROPRIATE GRADUATION DRESSES By: Bella Bridges The second website is more affordable while still being super popular, Princess Polly. Princess Polly's pricing typically ranges from $50-100. Princess Polly's sizing is usually correct and true to size. However, I personally know of a few people who have received their package with the wrong sizing. Their return policy is decent and Princess Polly’s takes at least a week to receive your package. Volume 3, March 2024 The third website is a super cheap website known as Shein. Shein’s prices are typically around $5-50. With that price comes doubtful quality. The sizing depends on the product so just make sure to read reviews before buying. Do some research on their return policy for each product. With Shein, products can take anywhere from a week to a month to arrive. By: Maya Clark Styles for school dances have changed a lot through the past decades, and this upcoming prom season will showcase a lot of new and fun trends among girls and guys. At Bishop McGuinness Catholic High School, students like to express themselves in their own personal ways. Let’s dive deeper into the 2024 prom trends. The junior and senior class from Bishop McGuinness Catholic reported what they are planning to wear for their upcoming prom in the survey to the right.

FASHION The majority of the girls (22.9%) reported that they are planning to wear sparkly sequins/shimmery glitter dresses for the dance, with corset and form-fitting silhouettes being the runner ups at both 17.1%. Shimmery and sparkly dresses have been a trending style over the past few years, because of their eye-catching fabrics, iridescent material and timeless embroidering. As well as having a touch of sparkle, sequins have been proven to be a popular material for dresses with their ability to add glamor to any dress. Prom can be a girl’s most special night of the year, and glittery dresses are a perfect way to make sure that you shine on the dance floor. Dresses with sparkly designs have proven themselves to be popular, however corset and form-fitting silhouettes are another trending style. If you want more of a tight dress that highlights your figure, this dress choice is the way to go for prom. Form fitting and corset dresses offer a defined shape for your body and a solid fit. Other styles 17 that the girls at Bishop McGuinness Catholic are planning to wear to prom include: A-line dresses, rhinestone and pearl embellishments, florals, ruffles, one-shouldered, and silk. Having a dress that you truly love for your big night is something every girl should prioritize, and exploring different boutiques and shops is a great way to find what you feel comfortable in. Some great places for prom dress shopping in North Carolina include: Hip Chics Formal Wear, The Dress Boutique and Winsdor. Wearing a suit to prom has been a classic and timeless approach for guys, starting in the 1960s. Tuxedos, vests, and dress shirts are more ways for men to express themselves at prom and make sure they look and feel good. Most boys are planning to wear black shoes with their outfit to create a cohesive look. Stay tuned to our next issue for a follow-up article! Based on the survey, most boys at Bishop McGuinness Catholic High School plan on wearing a suit (61.1%) and black shoes (66.7%) to prom.

The Villain Voice SCIENCE By: Abigayl Maryo 18 Volume 3, March 2024 Have you ever felt like the food you're eating makes you sick? Maintaining healthy eating can feel like a hard task in an era of fast and processed food. However, making small but impactful substitutions to your food and diet can lead to a significant change in your overall health and well-being. By understanding the power of substitutions, you can transform your meals into healthy nutritious food for your mind and body. Below are some suggestions for healthy swapping and smart habits to adopt. 3. Avocado for Butter: Use mashed avocado as a spread on toast or as a substitute for butter in baking recipes. Avocado is rich in heart-healthy monounsaturated fats, fiber, and vitamins, offering a creamy texture and delicious flavor without the saturated fat found in butter. HEALTHY EATING HABITS: A GUIDE TO SUBSTITUTION1. Whole Grain for Refined Grains: Swap refined grains like white bread, pasta, and rice for whole grains such as whole wheat bread, brown rice, quinoa, and oats. Whole grains are higher in fiber and nutrients, keeping you feeling fuller for longer and stabilizing blood sugar levels. 2. Vegetable Noodles for Pasta: Invest in a spiralizer and turn vegetables like zucchini, carrots, and sweet potatoes into noodles. These veggie noodles are low in calories and carbohydrates while providing a hefty dose of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. 4. Herbs and Spices for Salt: Reduce your sodium intake by flavoring your dishes with herbs, spices, and citrus instead of salt. Experiment with combinations like garlic, basil, oregano, cumin, lemon, and lime to enhance the taste of your meals without the need for excess salt. 5.Fresh Fruit for Desserts: Instead of reaching for sugary desserts, satisfy your sweet tooth with fresh fruits like berries, apples, oranges, and melons. Fruits are naturally sweet, and high in fiber, vitamins, and antioxidants, making them a nutritious and guilt-free treat. 6. Skip Drinks with Added Sugars: Adding sugars to healthy drinks like fruit punch and sports drinks can lead to adverse health outcomes like obesity, cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, and metabolic syndrome. Dietary Guidelines recommend limiting sugar intake to less than 10% of total calories. However, the daily average intake 7. Don't Eat in Front of the TV: Your meals are meant to be enjoyed. To get that satisfying crunch without the added calories and fat, opt for airfrying or baking your dishes instead. Healthy eating is not about deprivation or strict dietary rules but rather about making conscious choices that prioritize your health and well-being. SCIENCE Migration is a seasonal event that many birds naturally accomplish every year. Birds migrate based on the seasons and their needs to breed and survive. The most common form of migration is to travel north during the summer and spring seasons and travel south during the fall and winter seasons. This is because the weather in the north is too cold for birds to survive and breed in, while the weather in the south is too warm for them to survive. The cycle of migration includes four parts that directly correlate with the four seasons. The four phases are breeding, migrating south, overwintering, and migrating north. Overwintering is a stationary period between late fall and early spring where the birds conserve their energy for their flight back north. Breeding happens predominantly during the summer. Migrating south happens during the fall for the upcoming winter seasons. Overwintering happens during the winter in preparation for the trip back up north. Migrating north happens during the spring and then the cycle starts all over again. All four of these parts of the cycles are crucial to the survival of the birds. Traveling based on the weather provides the appropriate temperatures and climate for birds to succeed. The patterns of migration are very historic and can be traced all the way back to the beginning of ALL THAT MAKES UP HUNTING 19 MIGRATION PATTERNS OF BIRDS By: Frank Foppe modern birds. Even flying dinosaurs, such as the pterodactyls, followed migration patterns. Over three-thousand years ago authors such as Homer, Aristotle, and the Biblical author Job mentioned the migration patterns of birds of their time. The birds they mentioned included storks, turtle doves, and swallows. Job states, “Is it by your insight that the hawk hovers, spreads its wings southward?”. This shows that birds and their migration influenced the writings of people not only today, but also many years ago. Volume 3, March 2024 By: Burns Handy Hunting has been practiced since the beginning of time. Although the weapons and methods may have changed, the heart of it has stayed the same. There is a sense of accomplishment after a successful hunt. It is not only about the act of hunting, but the experience that really sets it apart from other activities. It could be a father connecting with his son bonding over a hunt or a grandpa teaching his grandson how to provide for his family. Each hunter follows their own method of rules and regulations for hunting. While some regulations are set by states or federal law, hunters often set their own regulations. These can be limitations that they put on themselves that they believe are right. For some it could be hunting with a bow and for others it could be shooting below their limit. Additionally, there are many different components that go into hunting; to name a few: preparation, seasons, hunting licenses, and then the actual waiting or stalking for the animal. All of these components are important for hunting. They act to protect and provide the opportunity for the animals to thrive. Preparation Preparation can take up a great deal of time. Preparing for hunting can include: planting seeds, scouting to see where the animals are, and setting up blinds and covers. These all are extremely vital to a good hunt. Often, hunters that own their own land will go above and beyond for the animals as they care for their land and want it to be the best it can be.

SCIENCE Seasons There are different seasons for different species. For example deer season runs from the beginning of October to the end of December. Duck season begins in mid October and ends in late January. These seasons are set to protect the animals and protect from over-hunting. This is why officials set a limit for how many animals that a hunter can harvest and how they can harvest it. 20 Hunting Licenses Each hunter is required to complete a hunter education course. After completing this they can pay to get a hunter's license which allows them to hunt different game. This is the case for North Carolina, but many states have different rules. Volume 3, March 2024 The Act of Hunting Different game requires different ways of hunting. For ducks, the hunter usually sits in a blind located near the water while when hunting for deer you can sit in a tree or in a ground blind, waiting for what could be hours. This is all a part of the experience and what makes it so enjoyable.

The Villain Voice SEASONAL By: Wilhelmina Bennett 21 Volume 3, March 2024 T.W.I.R.P., sometimes known as Sadie’s, is a gender-bent dance that switches the asker’s and the askee’s positions to where instead of the traditional guys asking the girls, it's flipped to where the girls ask the guys. At BMCHS we have T.W.I.R.P. which is just a different version of the original Sadie Hawkins dance. Even though we didn't have the dance this year, we can still respect its history. T.W.I.R.P. stands for The Woman Is Required to Pay, meaning that the woman, traditionally, buys the tickets or at least splits the difference. Apart from its roles being swapped, T.W.I.R.P. is still the same as any other dance in that it involves dressing up, a DJ, and a fun time. them, and if they were caught, they would be obligated to marry her. 200 colleges began doing Sadie Hawkins-themed activities. Sadie Hawkins quickly became a cultural anomaly because it caused many women to challenge traditional gender roles by pursuing their crushes, which at the time was not normal. All in all, Sadie Hawkins became an inspiration to many women. T.W.I.R.P. AND THE HISTORY OF SADIE HAWKINS Who is Sadie Hawkins? Sadie Hawkins is a fictional character who was featured in the famous comic strip “Li’l Abner” created by cartoonist Al Capp. In the comic, Sadie Hawkins has difficulty finding a husband because her character is portrayed as very shy and ugly. In a desperate attempt to help her, Sadie's father, Hekzebiah Hawkins, organizes a foot race known as Sadie Hawkins Day for all eligible bachelors in town. In the race, the bachelors would run and Sadie would chase after What Did Sadie Hawkins Accomplish? The Sadie Hawkins comic made waves in the fabric of our society, leading to the first ever Sadie Hawkins Day “girls-askboys” dance, that took place in November 1938. In no time, over FEBRUARY AND MENTAL HEALTH By: Sunny Sexton Why do we get so sad during the colder months, specifically during the month of February? There are a lot of factors that can contribute to the lack of good vibes for many people, the biggest one being S.A.D. (Seasonal Affective Disorder). Another cause of gloominess in the month of February can be the infamous Valentine’s Day, the day of love and romance. Some people who don’t have significant others feel lonely and gloomy when the day approaches. Yet, since it’s the day of love, we should practice self love more than anything. Self love is the most important form of love as well as the love we have for our family and friends. It’s not all about having valentines and significant others. Not only is February the month of “love” but also self-esteem. February is recognized as “International Boost Self Esteem Month”. This month is dedicated to helping us appreciate others and ourselves despite our hardships. High self-esteem can protect us against problems relating to our mental health issues. Not only can it help with our mental garden, but our physical health and well-being. Recently on February 1st, we had “Time to Talk Day '' which is hosted by an organization that promotes the conservation of mental health among peers. Though this organization mainly occurs throughout Europe, it should be something that is talked about in the United States and the entire globe. Time to Talk Day is simply a day where we can stop what we are doing and talk with one

SEASONAL LUNAR NEW YEAR TRADITIONS another; we can reach out and get the help we need, and we get the opportunity to be heard. Everyone struggles with mental health, so why is it so hard to talk about? Why are we so closed off to the idea of sharing how we are feeling? Even something as simple as “Hey, How are you?” can save a life. 22 Volume 3, March 2024 part of his guard. According to the myth, 12 animals completed the race: rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, goat, monkey, rooster, dog, and pig. As a reward, the Jade Emperor named a year in the lunisolar calendar (a calendar that is a combination of both the solar and lunar calendars) after each one of these animals. During the race, each animal had a trait revealed about them, and each time a year is named after them, people born during that year share that same trait supposedly. This year, 2024, is the year of the Dragon. The dragon hasn’t been chosen in over 10 years. The Lantern Festival The Lantern Festival, otherwise known as the Yuan Xiao Je in Mandarin Chinese, is a celebration that takes place on the 15th day of the first month of the Lunar New Year. Hanging lanterns are decorations you often see in houses and public places like restaurants and schools. Lanterns hanging during Chinese New Year are said to be lucky charms that frighten away the Nian monster, which, according to legend, is a fierce beast with sharp teeth and horns that eats both animals and people. By: Yianni Skoteiniadis On Saturday, February 10th, the Lunar New Year for 2024 begins. The Lunar New Year celebrates the beginning of a new year on the lunisolar calendar. This holiday is celebrated in countries like China, Vietnam, Korea, and other Asian countries. In this article, we will be exploring three important traditions that are part of the Lunar New Year celebrations. Animal of the Year Every year, a new animal is chosen to represent the new year. The tradition comes from an old Chinese myth. According to Chinese folklore, the Jade Emperor challenged all animals to a race. The 12 animals who made it to the end first would become “hóngbāo” in Mandarin and “lai see” in Cantonese, are a traditional Chinese New Year custom. They are small red and gold packets that contain money and are given to children, family, friends, and employees as a symbol of good luck. Typically adults, married couples, and the elderly will give children these red envelopes during the Lunar New Year. The red envelopes are said to help protect children from evil spirits, keep them healthy, and give them a long life. Red Envelopes Red envelopes, also known as

SEASONAL HISTORY OF EASTER TRADITIONS 23 Volume 3, March 2024 Easter tradition, the origins of egg painting date back to 1300 BC. This process, named “Pysanky” (meaning “to write” in Ukrainian), was a prayer and magical rite involving inscribing sacred characters and prayers onto the egg. One of the most common ancient symbols found is the unending line, which denotes the cyclical nature of all life. The bright colors used to paint eggs are a reflection of the multicolored spring flowers blooming. Another common symbol associated with Easter is the Easter bunny. One theory surrounding the Easter bunny is that the symbol of the rabbit developed from the ancient pagan tradition of the festival of Eostre. The goddess's animal symbol was a rabbit, which has long traditionally been a sign of fertility due to their high reproduction rates. The Easter Bunny was introduced to America by German immigrants in the 1700s. The Germans reportedly brought over their tradition of an egg-laying hare named "Osterhase" or "Oschter Haws" from Europe. According to legend, kids would make nests in which the bunny could leave his eggs and even set out carrots in case the hare got hungry. Then, the rabbit would lay colorful eggs as gifts to “good” children. Eventually, the tradition spread across America until it was a widespread Easter custom. People across the globe celebrate Easter annually with many different secular By: Lauren Showers Easter, which will be celebrated on Sunday, March 31 this year, has been observed since the second century as a religious holiday celebrating the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Despite the religious significance of Easter, many secular traditions associated with the holiday trace back to preChristian times. Saint Bede, a 6thcentury English monk, reasoned that the word “Easter” is derived from “Eostre”, the pagan goddess of spring and fertility. However, in other languages, the word for Easter ― Pascua in Spanish and Pasques in French― derives from the Greek word Pascha, for Passover. Most of the symbolism around Easter comes from the preChristian pagan celebrations of the Spring Equinox. The Spring Equinox marks the Nothern Hemisphere’s first day of spring. Nearly everywhere on Earth receives 12 hours of sunlight on this particular day. Christians today celebrate Easter on the Sunday following the first full moon after the Spring Equinox. Observed according to nature's cycles, Easter is tied to earthbased traditions. In ancient times, the spring Equinox was believed to be the result of the return of the sun God from the underworld. Common pagan traditions connected to this holiday include egg races, egg hunts, and egg painting. The egg is a universal symbol of new life, fertility, and rebirth. While today many people dye eggs in rainbow colors as an traditions. According to a survey of Bishop students, 94% of students celebrate secular Easter traditions annually. Some popular traditions across Bishop include Easter egg hunts, Easter baskets, spending time with family, and lots of chocolate. According to the survey, Bishop students' favorite Easter candy is Reeces eggs, followed by chocolate bunnies and peeps! Over the years, many secular Easter traditions exist, including everything from chocolate bunnies to Easter egg hunts. Some customs are regional, others depend on your family's cultural origin, but no matter what traditions you practice, Easter is all about the celebration of the resurrection of Jesus!

SEASONAL LEAP YEAR Imagine you have a calendar to keep track of time. Now, the Earth takes about 365.24 days to go around the sun once. So, if we just had a calendar with 365 days every year, it would not match up perfectly with how long it takes the Earth to go around the sun. Over time, our calendar would get out of sync with the seasons. To fix this problem, we add an extra day to our calendar every four years. This extra day is at the end of February and it's called a leap day. So, instead of February having 28 days, it has 29 in a leap year. This keeps our Gregorian calendar in line with the Earth's orbit. Leap years and subsequently leap days are necessary to make sure our calendar stays accurate and matches up with the way our planet moves around the sun. Here are some facts about leap years: 1. Leap years occur every four years, with some rare exceptions to maintain accuracy in the calendar system. 2. A leap year adds an extra day to February, making it 29 days instead of the usual 28. 3. The concept of leap years was introduced by Julius Caesar in the Julian calendar, but it was refined by Pope Gregory XIII in the Gregorian calendar in 1582. The Gregorian calendar is the one most commonly used today. Weather Preditctions Some believe that the weather during a leap year can be unpredictable or more extreme than usual. STATS ON VALENTINES DAY 24 Volume 3, March 2024 By: Cal Barrett Marriage In some cultures, leap years are considered unlucky for marriages. There's a tradition in Ireland and Scotland that allows women to propose to men during leap years, particularly on February 29th, a day known as "Leap Day." Leap years have also accumulated a variety of superstitions and cultural beliefs over the centuries: Birthdays People born on February 29th, often referred to as "leaplings" Valentine's Day is the lovely day of the year. On February 14th, people exchange cards, chocolates or flowers for their special someone. Around 224 million roses are grown specifically for Valentine's day. Due to our chillier conditions, the flowers are usually imported to the United States from countries like Kenya, Colombia, and Ecuador. On average, 64% of men will buy flowers for their special someone on Valentines Day, whereas 15% of women buy flowers for themselves on Valentines Day. Pastel candy hearts with cute phrases such as “Be mine” and “XOXO” were the top bought candies in 17 states, making them the most bought candy for Valentine's Day in America. Additionally, roughly 6 million people get engaged on Valentine's Day. By: Iara Silvagnoli or "leapers," celebrate their birthdays only once every four years. There are different traditions regarding which day they celebrate during non-leap years, such as February 28th or March 1st. This graph shows a survey of 40 freshman BMCHS students on their favorite gift to receive for Valentine's day. Chocolates were picked by 10 (26.3%) of the 40 students, stuffed animals were picked by 8 (21.1%), candy and flowers tied for 6 students each (15.8), jewelry was picked by 4 students and perfume was picked by 3 students.

SEASONAL HISTORY OF GROUNDHOG DAY Every year, on February 2nd, a groundhog predicts whether an early spring will come or winter will last longer. Although this tradition may seem bizarre, the history of Groundhog day is as interesting as this event. Groundhog day was initiated thousands of years ago, however, it looked different. It began in preChristian Europe, when the Celts ruled the land. In the Celtic calendar, instead of being marked by solstices, the seasons were marked by four turning points. One such turning point was on the first of February. Once Western Europe was Christainized, this date became known as Candlemas. This holiday featured Christians bringing candles to the Church to be blessed. If it was sunny on Candlemas, winter continued. However, if it were cloudy and rainy, spring started. Soon, the Germans began to come to parts of Europe that were formerly Celtic, and with them they brought their own beliefs. They even incorporated a badger into the Candlemas mix. When they came overseas to America, they likely couldn't find any badgers, henceforth, they exchanged it for the groundhog, which is similar in habitat and temperament. While many sources claim that the first groundhog day took place in 1887 when residents of Punxsutawney journeyed to Gobbler’s Knob, there are diaries from the 1840s suggesting the use of groundhogs to predict the weather. Even though part of the 25 Volume 3, March 2024 By: Caroline Kunkle reason the date and its activities are so famous is due to the 1993 film, Groundhog Day, Punxsutawney Phil was celebrated even before that, with an appearance on the Today Show in 1960. The Groundhog Club claims that there has only been one Phil since 1886, as he is given an elixir of life at the summer Groundhog Picnic. This gives him another seven years of life (groundhogs can live for up to six years in the wild, and 14 in captivity, so it is up to the reader’s discretion as to if this is true). Phil is even married to Phyliss, although she is not immortal. In an annual ceremony at Gobblers Knob in Pennsylvania, Phil emerges from his burrow. If he sees his body’s shadow, and the sun shines brightly, another six weeks of winter is predicted to be on the way. However, if the sun does not shine, and Phil does not see his shadow, an early spring may be on the way. This year, the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club president told the crowd that he was able to speak Groundhog and thus interpret the results. On Friday, he announced to an elated crowd that spring would arrive early. Hopefully, the groundhog’s prediction will hold true!

SPORTS By: Beau Martin SUPER BOWL LVIII RECAP 27 Each year leading up to the Super Bowl, our newspapers, televisions, and mobile devices are flooded with predictions and teasers for the upcoming game. The Super Bowl now resembles a national holiday rather than a sporting event. In the midst of all the chatter about the game itself is another storyline about what occurs during breaks in the game. It’s the story about the commercials. Which will be the funniest? Which one will be the most clever? How much does each company pay to have their commercial run during the game? The Super Bowl has become the advertising championship due to this tradition. During the 1980s, Apple began a new era of captivating Super Bowl commercials by introducing the revolutionary “1984” advertisement. Innovation, significant media attention, and an age of change in advertising were all outcomes of the advertisement. This event marked the beginning of the annual Super Bowl tradition in which the game became a platform for high-end advertisements produced by Fortune 500 companies. A “creative bowl” arose in the 1990s as businesses vied for the distinction of having the most notable advertisement of the evening. A 30-second ad can now cost over $7 million. Since it is one of the few times a year when viewers actively seek out advertisements, corporations are prepared to invest millions of dollars, with some allocating the majority of their annual advertising budget to a single Super Bowl commercial. Over the years, rivalries have emerged, with companies taking risks to attract attention and win over viewers. In today's world, advertisers are delving into social issues, such as gender, inequality, and immigration, which have the potential to pique viewers' interest while also alienating them. Those who prefer to avoid risk can always rely on the classic funny bone. While game viewership is at an all-time high, more people may tune into the Super Bowl for the commercials than for the teams who are playing on the football field. Volume 3, March 2024 This year's Super Bowl is filled with exciting storylines and others that some football fans are very upset about. This year after Three rounds of playoff games the two teams are the San Francisco 49ers and the Kansas City Chiefs, one of the biggest parts of the 49ers’ run has been their Quarterback Brock Purdy who was Mr. Irrelevant (the last pick in the draft) he led them to a twelve win season and the 1st seed in the NFC. On the other side, the KC Chiefs have been an Elite team since 2018 after Patrick Mahomes was drafted and sat a year. Former Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith went down with a horrifying leg injury and Patrick Mahomes never stepped down. Vegas had the big game line at -2 49ers with a 47.5 points total line. The Super Bowl held one of the worst first 3 quarters in NFL history going into the 4th with a score of KC 13 - 10 SF. In the 4th SF pulled it together getting 9 on the board and the Chiefs scoring 6 one of which was a last-second field goal to send it to overtime. The Chiefs received the start and hit an easy field goal extending the game with 7:22 left to go. In those minutes following Patrick Mahomes drove his team down the field setting up a 3-yard Mecole Hardman Jr, automatically ending the game and making the Chiefs champions yet again. If you were cheering for the French then that probably means you are a fan of Kylian Mbappé. For current fans and future fans, here is a player profile for Mbappé, as well as information on his transfer to Real Madrid. Kylian Mbappé, the young football star has been rising in the ranks as a professional footballer ever since his first World Cup win in 2018. After making a huge impact for the French team, Mbappé is certainly destined to be one of the greatest players after Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo retire from their career. He started his career in 2017 at the Paris Saint-Germain Football Club (PSG) when he first joined the club on loan from Monaco. PSG confirmed his contract rights the next year. Mbappé has been dominating at PSG over the years; he was so talented that they eventually gave him power that no one else had on the team: he could basically manage. This created a powerful ego which led to the overpowerment of other teammates. In the five years they were at the club together, tensions grew between Neymar Junior and Mbappé, Neymar felt that Mbappé was trying to force him out of the club. In the end, Neymar moved to a team in Saudi Arabia. Now, rumors have been going around that Mbappé is transferring to Real Madrid for the past two years, but ESPN has finally confirmed that Mbappé is transferring to Madrid this summer. If it wasn’t common knowledge already it definitely is now. Real Madrid is going to be unstoppable.

The deal has multiple opt-outs along with multiple options that could give the deal a 14 year, $377 million ceiling. If it reaches $377 million, it would be the third largest contract extension in MLB history only behind Mike Trout and Mookie Betts. The Houston Astros signed Jose Altuve to a 5 year, $125 million making him the first second baseman in MLB history to have career earnings of over $300 million. Trades have always been a staple for some of the biggest off-season transactions where star players get traded to a contender or contender-hopeful team. The Yankees kicked off their offseason with acquiring Juan Soto and Trent Grisham in a blockbuster trade with the Padres. The Yankees sent Michael King, Drew Thorpe, Jhony Brito, Randy Vazquez and Kyle Higashioka. To match their divisional rivals, the Orioles made a blockbuster trade of their own by acquiring Corbin Burnes. The return for the Brewers for the 2022 NL CY Young award winner was D.L. Hall, Joey Ortiz, and a competitive balance round A draft pick (34th overall). The Dodgers added to their big offseason by trading for Rays’ Tyler Glasnow and Manuel Margot. In return, they sent Ryan Pepiot and Johnny Deluca to Tampa Bay. Glasnow signed a 5 year, $135 million extension following the trade. The Braves made a trade to acquire Chris Sale from the Red Sox in exchange for Vaughn Grissom. Sale signed a 2 year extension after the trade. The Giants acquired former CY Young award winner Robbie Ray from the Mariners in exchange for Mitch Haniger and Anthony DeSclafani. There are also many other smaller trades that occurred. However, most of those trades likely won't have a huge impact on teams this season. There are still many top free agents who haven’t signed with a team yet. JD Martinez, Matt Chapman and Cody Bellinger are all power bats that haven’t signed. The pitching market left unsigned is headlined by 2023 NL CY Young award winner Blake Snell. Volume 3, March 2024 As the MLB offseason winds down, it’s time to take a look at the major transactions that teams have made to improve their rosters before Spring Training. Pitchers and catchers report to Spring Training to start workouts on February 14th while exhibition games will begin February 22nd, with a Dodgers vs Padres matchup. Many teams with disappointing 2023 seasons are looking to bounce back in 2024. Free agent signings and trades are the biggest ways teams improve their rosters. Some teams also look to sign players who are already on their roster seeking contract extensions. Free agency is typically the highlight of players who are signing big contracts. However, some teams signed players to contract extensions to retain them for years. The Detroit Tigers signed Colt Keith to a 6 year contract with $28.6 million guaranteed. There are three club options that can max out the contract to be 9 years at $82 million. He is currently the MLB’s 23rd best prospect and has not played at the MLB level yet. The MLB’s number 2 prospect, Jackson Chourio, signed the largest contract for a player who hasn't played at the big league level. He agreed to 8 years, $82 million and club options which can bring the contract up to $140 million. The Kansas City Royals signed young superstar, Bobby Witt Jr., to an 11 year, $288.7 million extension. Witt is a

The Villain Voice STUDENT LIFE By: Amanda GeddieGarcia 32 Volume 3, March 2024 Winterim is a longstanding Bishop McGuinness Catholic High School tradition set for seniors to be able to shadow two professionals and hopefully gain insight into their career aspirations for the future. The class of 2024 is well into their preparations, ready for the shadowing week from March 11th to March 15th. They are not the only ones preparing right now, as for the first time at Bishop, so is the class of 2025. Over the past couple of years, both the English Department and past seniors have submitted feedback stating their interest in moving this experience, arguing its many benefits. This year, the administration has finally decided to move this experience to the summer between junior and senior year, turning what we now know as Winterim into SIP, the Summer Internship Program. Teachers believe this move will allow students to gain more experience before they apply to college and be able to steer their decisions, before making an academic commitment. Besides a more informed decision, next year’s seniors who have already completed SIP will be able to use their experience on their resumes and applications, but most importantly, reduce stress during their final semester at Bishop McGuinness. While there has been some pushback from students with summer jobs or shadowing professionals who only work during the year, for example, teachers, overall, this change has been received well, with 60% of juniors and seniors agreeing with or wishing they had the change. Senior Kate Wolschon is part of that majority agreeing, “As a senior, I've had a lot of trouble with scheduling and finding people who are willing to let me shadow, so I think the summer would have been a lot more flexible, and a lot easier.” This change marks a new step in the structure of the English department and the beginning of many firsts for the Bishop upperclassmen: their first interviews, internships, and insights into the professional world. With helpful feedback and new experiences, this school landmark will only continue to adjust to the needs of our students and improve their preparation for college, their careers, and anything their future may hold. WINTERIM TO SIP SENIORITIS By: Emelia Allred Senioritis is one of the most infamous things that occurs every senior year. No matter what school you go to, or what classes you take, I can guarantee you know one senior who suffers from it. Personally, I have suffered from senioritis myself. But what causes senioritis? Is it more than just seniors giving up and being done with school? To take a deep dive into this epidemic, we must understand high school. For 12 years, students have worked hard to get to where they are. By the time they are in their fourth year of high school, students tend to be burnt out and tired. They have submitted their college applications, usually heard back from the schools they want to go to, and, overall, do not feel like their grades matter anymore as long as they are not failing. Seniors view the last semester of the year as a joke. They have gotten into their colleges, and in some schools, they don’t even have final exams so seniors view it as “what's the point?”. There is no scientific evidence to prove that senioritis is more than just a student becoming lazy but by the time the fourth quarter of the senior year has rolled around, I believe every senior

STUDENT LIFE 34 During the fall and winter seasons have you ever found that people you know grow sad or anti-social? If so they are likely dealing with Seasonal affective disorder (SAD). Seasonal affective disorder, otherwise known as seasonal depression, is a condition in which a person experiences overwhelming sadness and loss of hope during a specific time of each year. This “time of year” typically consists of fall and winter due to the lack of sunlight and shortened days. The loss of time during the day typically leads people to be “thrown off” as they lose a piece of control within their lives and their schedules. Scientifically, the reason for seasonal depression is a loss of serotonin and a rise in melatonin in the brain, both caused by excessive darkness. Serotonin is a hormone in your body that controls your appetite, and emotions and is in direct relation to feelings of psychological depression. Melatonin is a hormone that affects how tired you are and when increased it can cause you to feel drowsy and experience the physical effects of SAD. Ultimately, this disorder is caused by the unhealthy conditions of wintertime, and due to its increasing issue, scientists have been working to find a way to combat or prevent it. Who Does SAD Effect? Based on the little knowledge that scientists do have on seasonal affective disorder it's been determined that millions of Americans, from young preteens to senior citizens, have suffered or do currently suffer from SAD. For reference, at Bishop McGuinness Catholic High School alone, over half of students know someone who has experienced or is experiencing seasonal depression. This gives an idea of how current this issue is and how pressing the matter is for doctors of today. The effects of this disorder vary from person to person; however, common side effects include sleeping for long periods, irritability, social withdrawal, difficulty focusing, anxiety, and much more. This disorder is constantly overlooked in society and it seems that only an increase in people affected is making officials look into it. Thankfully, as doctors have performed more and more research more and more resolutions have been thought up. This gives people who struggle with SAD yearly hope that many of them never expected to find. Volume 3, March 2024 years. One of the starters on the team, John Campbell, hit the 1,000-point mark during his senior season (this current season). Typically, the other 4 starters are McAlister Barrett, Nicholas Graves, Cayden Long, and Miller Aho. This team’s head coach is Josh Thompson. The assistant coaches are Ryan Haidinger and Michael Herschel. SEASONAL DEPRESSION By: Jenna Murphy Lady Villains Indoor Track The girl’s track team is coached by Coach Trey. The girls’ team won conference champions this season and the girls 4x4 team qualified for states with their average time of 4 minutes 35 seconds. The best stat for the long jump belongs to Ella Suire (12 ‘0.3). The best stat for 55m with hurdles belongs to Theresa Schultheis (11.07 seconds) who also has the best 300m dash (47.05 seconds). The best stat for 1000m belongs to Emily Pape (4:13.20). Gentlemen Villains Indoor Track The boy’s track team is coached by Michael Smith. Although the boys’ team did not qualify for states, they won conference championships with a fortyseven-point lead on Cornerstone Charter School. The best stat for the shot put belongs to Grady Long (36 ‘9.5) and the best stat for the long jump belongs to Heath Ropko (19 ‘4.5). The best stat for 3200m belongs to Caleb Eaton (11:21.51). The best stat for the 300m dash belongs to Will Valente (40.52 seconds). The best stat for 1600m belongs to Cole Colither (4:55). How Can SAD be Avoided? So how can Seasonal Depression be avoided? This growth isn't just personal; it positively influences academic performance and strengthens college applications. The national recognition of Model UN further highlights its importance, evident in college admissions processes. Encouraging participation in Model UN is crucial. Despite stereotypes, it's far from being a "nerd club." Dedication and a commitment to excellence go beyond labels, offering participants a satisfying journey. Interacting with diverse individuals and navigating diplomatic challenges provide invaluable lessons that expand one's worldview. However, we must acknowledge the financial aspect of Model UN. As a club funded out-of-pocket, it heavily relies on support from students' families to cover expenses like transportation and competition fees. While this may seem daunting, the investment pays off in exposure to global issues and cross-cultural interactions. In essence, Model UN represents a valuable exchange — investing traditional currency for priceless experiences. The lessons learned and connections made transcend monetary value, shaping individuals into informed global citizens. Therefore, despite its financial demands, the rewards from participating in Model UN make it an indispensable part of the Bishop McGuinness Catholic High School experience. Model United Nations (Model UN) holds a central role among Bishop McGuinness Catholic High School's array of academic clubs, with a primary focus on speech and debate. Essentially, the club simulates the workings of the UN, typically held at various college campuses nationwide and led by college students. Participating in these events offers students an invaluable opportunity to join their peers and mentors at esteemed institutions, making it one of the most enriching experiences at our school. Model UN isn't just about public speaking; it's a platform for developing essential skills like teamwork, diplomacy, and critical thinking. Emelia Allred said she is most excited about, “Spending quality time with my friends right before we all graduate.” I sent out a survey to all the students asking them where they are going and what makes them the most excited. Along with that, I interviewed these four students specifically: Ansley Tesh, Jacquelin Leon, Kylee Gohering, and Bella Bridges. Ansley Tesh is going to the Bahamas. She is going with her family, and very close friend Elizabeth. She said she is most excited about the warm weather and boat rides to explore the island. Jacquelin Leon is going to Spain. She has never been there before. Jacquelin is most excited about visiting the Sagrada Familia cathedral, seeing all the beautiful towns, and learning about Spain's culture. She is excited about the resort that they are staying at and spending time with her friend, who she doesn't get to see as much since she moved to Asheville when she was younger. As of 2024, many people have improved their mental health, finances, and fitness. Researchers suggest only about 9% of Americans are consistent with their resolutions, while the other 91% tend to struggle to stay on top of improving their lives. As the year goes on, it can be hard for students to keep up with school, juggle a job, and stay consistent with their goals. Research has been done to assist with this problem. To help the students of Bishop McGuinness Catholic self-improve and see the path to success, here is an guide on how to stay consistent with your 2024 New Year’s resolutions well into the year. First, set specific and realistic goals. The top main reason resolutions rarely succeed is the lack of specificity. Rather than setting extensive goals like getting fit or starting to be financially smarter, make goals more achievable for you and your lifestyle. For example, set a goal to exercise for 35 minutes two or three times a week or save about 10% of your earnings instead of spending it. Realistic and specific goals give you a clear and understandable path. This can take off the pressure of trying to achieve too large of a goal all at once. Having a strong support system is also important. Surrounding yourself with people who love and care about you is another key to being able to keep up with your resolutions. Having friends and family who share the same interests and goals as you can create a safer feeling environment and motivate you at the same time. Keeping away from people with negative attitudes has a major role in your life. Individuals who are cynical

STUDENT LIFE don’t express a positive future and can influence you and your goals in a negative way. This can cause you to give up on what you had planned for yourself. Always make sure to track your progress. Checking in with yourself is important for you and your mental health. Monitoring how you’re doing is essential to staying on top of your goals and staying motivated. Doing things like keeping a journal and making a vision board can keep you on track. If journaling or dream boards is too much for you, tracking apps have your back. Apps and websites like Odoo.com can help you stay organized and up to date. Reflecting on your progress is important but don’t ever feel down about setbacks. Just get back up and keep going! We can never predict what will happen in our lives. With this in mind, we need to stay flexible even with our set goals. Never get discouraged when you have to move your plans around when challenges get in the way. Instead of labeling setbacks as failures, embrace them but still stay focused on overcoming these challenges and reach your goal. MASTERING THE SAFETY OF DRIVING 37 Volume 3, March 2024 By: Alexandra Cupani With cold weather in winter and heavy rains in the spring, driving is riskier every day. Having skills in things like controlling your car when your vehicle slips on ice, or knowing what to do when hydroplaning on a large puddle of water, can keep you safe. Here is a guide to help you come closer to safety each time you start your engine: 1. Stay Focused and Don’t Get Distracted Maintaining focus while driving is essential. Avoiding things like being on the phone, including calling, is important. Make sure before starting your drive that you take care of any potential distractions. Bags, items, or drinks that can fall, should be secured before getting on the main road. Reaching for things that have fallen or even adjusting the radio can cause you to swerve, rear end someone, or crash into an obstacle. 2. Obey Traffic Laws Traffic laws are enforced for a reason. These laws are meant to keep us safe on the road. Using a seatbelt can prevent you from getting majorly injured during an accident and following the signs posted keeps traffic flowing smoothly. Don’t forget the speed limit is a law, not a suggestion, so following the speed limit can prevent you from losing control of your car and keeps you and your passengers safe. 3. Be Aware of Weather Conditions Checking the weather before making plans and driving is always the smarter choice. If you’re not comfortable with driving in rain, ice, or snow make sure to reschedule any plans. If you are, be mindful that different weather conditions can make driving unsafe. Reducing your speed and turning on your high beams in the rain, snow or fog can assist you with getting to your destination safely. 4. Never Drive Under the Influence Driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol can severely affect your driving ability by causing a slower reaction or impairing your vision. If you plan on being under the influence, always have a designated driver or an Uber ready. 5. Hydroplaning Your car slipping on ice or water is very common and can be severely dangerous. The first thing you want to do is remain calm and gain control. Abrupt braking is looked down upon when this situation occurs. Instead gently ease off the gas to prevent your vehicle from skidding. Attempt to have a firm grip on your steering wheel and steer straight. Avoid overcorrecting because this can cause your car to spin out. Lastly, after coming to a halt, remain vigilant in your safety.

The Villain Voice TRAVEL By: Bobby Reddick 38 Volume 3, March 2024 North Carolina has hundreds of beautiful hiking trails, wildlife preserves, and parks. In the Piedmont area of the state, pretty much every trail will be in a temperate deciduous forest, meaning that leaves change year-round. Hagan Stone The many walking and hiking trails of Hagan Stone are very well-kept. When walking on this trail, it is easy to see the beauty of deciduous forests. In the spring this park is beautiful and during this time, multiple recreational services open as well. The biggest one is the pool located here. Along with the pool, there are various camping grounds as well as lakes for people to fish at. Guilford Courthouse The Trail is located in the forest of Greensboro on a memorial battleground. During the Revolutionary War, The Battle of Guilford Courthouse led to American victory. On the actual trail, there are all types of statues and commemorations of the battle as well as a little museum-like building with artifacts from the battle. When walking on this trail it is not uncommon to find reenactors recreating the battle. BEST LOCAL HIKING TRAILS Pilot Mountain Located about twenty miles northwest of Winston Salem, Pilot Mountain is a great experience because of the breathtaking views from the top. The mountain is unique because of its strange formation with what is often called its “knob” being the highest point. This knob provides quite the challenge of a hike to get to from the bottom as the trails on the way there are steep and windy. DISNEY PREPARATIONS By: Miles Fuehler As seniors get closer and closer to graduation, we cannot help but look forward to the annual senior Disney World trip! Here, I will go over the best way to prepare for the overnight field trip. Additionally, I will create a poll to see which Disney ride is the class favorite. In order to arrive at Disney to begin with, you will need to pass the luggage inspection occurring before departure. To prepare, you will need to leave any forbidden materials like drugs, alcohol, and vapes at home. You shouldn’t have these in any way since they are illegal but if you are found with any of these items you will be sent home before the trip even starts! Next, if you take medicine you need to prepare to report your prescription with any instructions to the medical table on Monday evening before departure. If you fail to do this, you may not be allowed to take your medicines with you on the trip. To avoid this conflict, write yourself a reminder to be sure you do not forget. Once at Disney, prepare to be with at least one buddy throughout your day. Be sure that you pick a buddy of the same gender. You may NOT be left alone while on this trip. You and your buddy will not be allowed to leave Disney property, no matter the circumstances. To avoid the temptation of leaving Disney

TRAVEL grounds, it is best to bring fun activities such as card games, board games, or a book to keep you entertained and busy. Additionally, it is crucial that you prepare yourself to be on your best behavior! Students who fail to follow the rules will be sent home. On top of this, your guardians will be charged $100 as an inconvenience fee. Additionally, you will receive a suspension from school, or even the threat of expulsion. To end, I chose to ask a question. We all love roller coasters, right? Luckily for us, there are many rides at Disney to choose from. However, figuring out which rides are best can be challenging. I have been inspired to explore and find out which Disney roller coasters people think are the greatest. I interviewed my senior class to see which ride they favor most! WHY IS CANCUN SO POPULAR? 39 Cancun is one of the most visited places during spring break by teens and young adults because of a variety of reasons. The major reasons are the beautiful beaches and warm weather, including the legal age limit to drink alcohol at 18 years old. On average, more than 43,000 American students make their way to Cancun for a whole new experience in Cancun. There are many beaches to go to, but the most visited and popular ones are the Playa Chac Mool, Playa Delfines, Playa Gaviota Azul, and Playa Marlin. Still, the 2 most visited beaches are Playa Chac Mool and Playa Delfines. Playa Chac Mool is one of people’s first choices because it is close to one of the best hotels in the area and is beautiful and calm compared to the others. Playa Delfines is one of the largest and most active beaches and it is common to see teenagers riding jet-skis and speakers blasting fun tunes. Many adults also enjoy cocktails and unique alcohol that is only made in Mexico. Besides beaches, there are other things to engage in at Cancun, such as going to outdoor malls or exploring Cancun’s downtown area. It’s a fun place to go because there are various restaurants to eat at with family or friends. According to people from America and Europe who have visited outdoor malls and the downtown for the first time they have said that their experience is different than visiting other countries because everything is very “traditional” and “Natural”.
