The Villain Voice FAITH FEATURE GET TO KNOW OUR NEW PRIEST Interview Q: Can you tell us a bit about your background and what led you to become a priest? I grew up in a devout Catholic family, and I was homeschooled all the way from Kindergarten through 12th grade. I certainly give a lot of credit to my parents for providing the kind of environment in which I would be able to hear God's call to be a priest. I would say that I was always somewhat interested in the priesthood since I was a little kid, but it was in high school that I began to take the possibility of a priestly vocation more seriously. Through personal prayer and conversations with priests I trusted, I eventually came to the conclusion that God was calling me to be a priest, and I decided to go to seminary. However, during the application process, I changed my mind and decided to walk away from it. After about a year of pursuing other interests, I felt unhappy and unsatisfied. I had an experience at Mass one Sunday where I was watching the priest as he preached the homily, and I was struck by how joyful he seemed. In that moment, I think the Holy Spirit gave me a special grace, and I became convinced that if I did not at least try going to seminary, I would spend the rest 1 Volume 1, October 2023 of my life feeling like I had missed something, and so I decided to apply again. This time, by the grace of God, I did finish the application, and I was accepted into seminary. Once I entered the seminary, I knew I was in the right place, and I decided to continue down that path. I am now a priest, and I am very happy and grateful to God for calling me to this vocation. Q:What challenges do you face in your pastoral work, and how do you address them? I have only been a priest for about 3 months at this point, so I think the biggest challenge I face at this point is simply the learning curve. As a priest, there are many different things I have to do and ministries that I assist with, and much of it is very new to me. To help with this, I am trying to trust in God that He will always give the grace I need to handle whatever situation is in front of me, and I seek help from more experienced priests as well. Another difficult thing is the amount of public speaking that I have to do as a priest, which can certainly make me nervous. To help with this, I always try to entrust my efforts at public speaking to the guidance of the Holy Spirit and the Blessed Virgin Mary, and I think that they have helped me a lot. Q: How do you maintain your own faith and spiritual wellbeing during challenging times? During challenging times, I think the most beneficial thing that I can do for myself is to stay faithful to praying to God each day. Focusing on my relationship with Him helps me to see things in light of what is truly important, and helps me to trust that whatever is going on, God will give me the grace I need to get through it. I am also blessed to have some very close friends from seminary that I know I can trust, and talking with them is very helpful as well. Q: What advice would you give to individuals who are exploring their own faith or considering a religious vocation?
GET TO KNOW OUR NEW PRIEST 2 Volume 1, October 2023I I think the biggest piece of advice I can give is to stay faithful to daily prayer. God is our Father, and He loves us and is always guiding us. But if we don't make the time to spend with Him and listen to what He has to say, we might miss out on something important. So if you think God might be calling you to a religious vocation, or if you're just trying to take your Faith more seriously, the best thing I can say is to focus on your relationship with God and stay faithful to daily prayer. I would also say that, during that time of prayer, it is good to take some time for silence: to speak to God in the silence of your heart, and to listen. If this can be done in the presence of if the Blessed Sacrament, even better! I personally found this kind of prayer to be very powerful as I was discerning my own vocation. Q: What advice would you give to individuals who are exploring their own faith or considering a religious vocation? I would say that a particular teaching that really resonates with me is the teaching about Divine Providence. As I am beginning my priestly ministry, I have the sense that God is guiding me according to His Divine Providence: that He is giving me the experiences He wants me to have in order to help me to be a better priest. Thinking about this teaching helps me to trust in God and in His plan for my life, and to be willing to do whatever I need to do as a priest, even things that might be difficult. A particular Scripture passage that I think goes really well with this teaching is Romans 8:28, which says: "we know that all things work for good for those who love God, who are called according to His purpose." Although it has been played since the 15th century, golf is a sport that continues to grow in popularity, particularly over the past couple of decades. The point of golf is to get the ball in the hole in as few strokes as possible. Par is the amount of strokes (hits on the ball) it should take a person to get the ball in the hole. A full golf round consists of eighteen holes. A player could wonder, are there scientific forces behind golf that make this game flow so beautifully? There are many forces at play during any golf shot, from the compression of the ball to air turbulence in its flight. A great place to start evaluating these scientific forces is with the golf ball itself. The golf ball is made up of many different layers that help it compress and then rebound off the club. The more efficiently a ball can absorb energy from the swing, the farther it will go. There is a hard coating on the outside that has dimples and can take the stress of combustion. Then, depending on the ball, two or four more layers will allow the ball to absorb the energy as efficiently as possible. Some kind of rubber is usually used for this absorption as rubber can be stretched and retain most of that energy. Layers of a Golf Ball The Villain Voice SCIENCE THE ROLE OF SCIENCE IN GOLF By: Burns Handy 3 Volume 1, October 2023 Creating Spin on the Ball A large part of the golf swing is dedicated to creating compression. Compression, in turn, creates a spin on the ball, which helps control its flight path. Leaving the club face open when striking the ball will cause the ball to “fade” right. The opposite happens when the club face is closed; it will cause the ball to “draw” left. These are the most common terms to describe the flight of the ball. Spin can be both good and bad. The spin will benefit the player as long as it can be controlled. Drag Effect on Ball Dimples are extremely important for spin. All golf balls used to be perfectly round. Eventually, most players would play with scuffed-up balls because they found that they flew straighter. This led to the invention of dimples, and soon companies were mass-producing balls with dimples. (Air turbulence/drag on the ball when smooth versus dimpled) down on the ball with their irons, but when it comes to a driver, it is an entirely different club. The driver is placed further up in the player's stance (about in line with the big toe) and then teed up, allowing the player to hit up on the ball, creating a top spin. Overall, this will create a larger role out and a further shot. Creating Lag One move that is dedicated to creating compression is lag. “Lag” is the term that is used to describe the club trailing behind a player's body. At impact, this will lead to more shaft lean (hands in front of the club head), creating more compression and a whip effect. This whip effect will help the player gain more power at impact. To conclude, many scientific principles are at work in a single golf shot that multiplies over an entire round. It is how a player uses these that will determine their ability to thrive, but it will likely look different for every player. Some may choose to put more spin or less spin on the ball, but whatever their decisions, it is how well they execute them that really matters. As current Hall of Farmer, former PGA Pro, and former Wake Forest Golf Coach Jack Lewis Jr. says best, “Golf is about doing the ordinary things extraordinarily well.” Conclusion Importance of Club Choice Many players get used to hitting
SCIENCE Did you know that the title was generated by an AI? If you did a pat on the back for you. AI is becoming very prominent in the world especially, in education. Our education system has become a main place for AI usage. For perspective, the primary AI website, ChatGPT, has reached over 100 million users with around 1.6 billion visits in June of 2023. Around 30 percent of those 100 million users are college students. Since then, more and more people, including students, are starting to use AI to assist them in their learning. On the surface, this may seem bad to many, but there are benefits to AI usage. First off, there are still downsides to AI in education. The two main challenges facing AI are students using AI to cheat on assignments, and the database the AI uses could contain biases and misinformation. Students using websites like ChatGPT to cheat is definitely the most challenging problem with AI. Pretty much, they are turning in work that is not theirs. It becomes an ethical issue at this point. The programs developed to try and detect AI are not 100 percent reliable either. Along with this, students are not learning if someone else is doing the work for them. On tests and exams, they could be completely lost since the AI did all their work. Furthermore, the AI database depends on the developers. If the database contains any biases or false information, they will be learned by AI systems. This can be bad as that information will be used by the AI and eventually used by the student that uses the AI. This stuff could range from racial and gender bias to false information about history and science. However, there are benefits to using AI in education. They are both beneficial to the student and the teacher. Students could get insight and help from an AI that sometimes a human cannot provide or if a teacher does not have the time to help. AI could explain difficult concepts to students, critique writing, and provide research to them. They could act as tutors for students that cannot afford one. HOW MUCH IS TOO MUCH SCREEN TIME? 4 Volume 1, October 2023Moreover, AI could help teachers create lesson plans. They also create customized learning experiences for students with disabilities. On top of that AI could help design unique quizzes, tests, and worksheets. AI makes the life of a teacher easier and perfect their practice. Overall, AI is evolving and the education field is going to have to adjust and incorporate AI into learning. At the moment, the debate between using AI is controversial and even. There are challenges and downsides to AI but there are also benefits that make the quality of life easier. Hopefully in the future, an agreement can be made on how to handle AI in the education field. After all, this whole article could have been written by AI too. LEARNING IN THE AGE OF AI: A PARADIGM SHIFT By: Ethan Silva By: Iara Silvagnoli Dangers of Screen Time Did you realize that youngsters play on screens for nearly twice as long as they do outside? Children in the United States ages 8-12 watch or view screens for 4-6 hours a day on average. Teenagers can use their phones for up to nine hours every day. Too much screen time can cause sleep issues, poor academic performance, and less time spent with friends and family. Screen usage has also been linked to Shown here is the BMCHS survey sent out with a graph documenting the results.
SCIENCE Negative effects of Screen Time on Your Health In this generation, screens are a part of our everyday lives. If you spend too much time watching videos and TV, it can increase the risk of your child becoming obese. Heart health can be impacted, which can lead to a higher risk of diabetes and increased blood pressure or cholesterol. The light generated from electronic devices conflicts with sleep cycles and can prevent a good sleep. Bad posture, chronic neck, shoulder, Healthy Amount of Screen Time for High Schoolers With devices used daily, how should parents set boundaries for their kids? For babies (kids two and under) they should not be spending any time on screens, except for video-chatting with family or friends on their parents’ phone. Toddlers, ages 2-5 should have no more than 1 hour per day on screens. Ages 5-17 should at a maximum have 2 hours on screens (not including screens at school or homework). Why cut back on your screen time? When you reduce your screen time you will also reduce stress levels. By lowering your body's cortisol levels, making a conscious effort to take breaks from technology can help you feel less stressed. The quantity and quality of your sleep can be improved by developing a bedtime routine without technology. Reducing screen time can help to refocus on the task at hand, and increase productivity. 5 Volume 1, October 2023mental and physical harm in children's development. and back pain can also be caused by screens. All the time spent on your phone can negatively affect your mental and emotional wellbeing. On social media, especially, spending too much time on your phone can lead to suicidal behaviors. The Villain Voice SPORTS IS COLORADO AMERICA’S FOOTBALL TEAM? By: Emerson Marty The Colorado Buffaloes are the talk of the sports world and the new darling of college football. After winning only one game last season, Colorado started the 2023 season with wins over TCU and Nebraska. They are led by brash head coach Deion Sanders, who his players call "Coach Prime." Most people remember Sanders as a two-sport athlete who played professionally in the NFL and the MLB. Colorado was once a football powerhouse and won the National Championship in 1990. In recent years, they have become one of the worst programs in college football. The program had gone through five head football coaches since 2018, appeared in only two bowl games since 2008, and sunk to a 1-11 record in 2022. Everything changed when Coach Prime was hired as the head football coach in December. In his first meeting with players, he was brutally honest with them and encouraged most to think about leaving Colorado when he said, "Jump in that [transfer] portal." Over the next several months, a record 71 players entered the transfer portal and left Colorado, replaced by 5-star high school recruits and scores of players from other schools. 6 Volume 1, October 2023 On Saturday, April 22, nearly 50,000 fans made their way to Folsom Field for Coach Prime's first spring game. The crowd was bigger than all but two of the team's regular-season home games last season. "This was the beginning of everything in the direction that we go right now," Sanders said afterward. "You all know that we're going to move on from some of the team members, and we're going to reload and get some kids that we really identify with. This process is going to be quick, it's going to be fast, but we're going to get it done." In the spring, the athletic department announced they had officially sold out of season tickets for the upcoming season for the first time in 27 years. Merchandise sales have spiked more than 500% since Coach Prime's hiring. The anticipation of Coach Prime’s first season in Boulder has grown into a national story; fans, commentators, and even other coaches were wondering if he would succeed at Colorado. The answer would come in early September when they matched up with national championship runner-up TCU. Colorado went into the game as a three-touchdown underdog but would shock the world with a 45-42 win. In just one week, with one victory, they became the most talked about team in college football. They would continue their strong start with a win against Nebraska a week later. The college football world was buzzing, and ESPN College Gameday would make their way to Boulder for the in-state rivalry game against Colorado State. While Colorado came out on top with another win, most impressive was the 9.3 million viewers that tuned in that night. This was ESPN’s most-watched late-night college game in history. The following week, they would suffer their first defeat against No. 9 Oregon, but the national interest continued to grow as over 10 million viewers watched the game. SPORTS 7 Volume 1, October 2023This was a larger audience than the Notre Dame vs. Ohio State game. In just four games, Coach Prime’s Buffaloes drew more viewers than two of the biggest brands in college football. Although Colorado has lost two games in a row since the fast start to the season (losing first to Oregon, then followed by a close loss to nationally-ranked University of Southern California), the excitement about the resurgence of the Buffaloes remains strong. Wins and losses won’t define the team this season. The new energy and intrigue surrounding Coach Prime and his players (many of whom followed him to Colorado from Jackson State University) will likely continue throughout the season. There is no story in college football as interesting as Colorado this season. As long as Coach Prime and his players continue to play competitive football and give fans something to be excited about, the Colorado Buffaloes will make a legitimate claim to becoming America’s football team. Every four summers, the United States of America is tasked with putting together a team of talented basketball players to compete for the gold medal at the World Olympics. This year’s team has extra emphasis due to the large group of stars announcing their interest in the team. LeBron James has announced he plans to play in the 2024 Olympics and bring his talented friends. Team USA has recently come off one of the most embarrassing national performances in history. The team failed to medal in the FIBA World Cup that just took place in the Philippines during August and September of this year. As a result, many American NBA stars who did not play have announced their interest in playing in the 2024 Olympics to restore the former dominance and glory of the team. The team has only ever failed to medal in the Olympics thrice since basketball was introduced in 1936. Among the other stars who have announced their planned return are Stephen Curry, Kevin Durant, and many other talented players. As mentioned, Team USA failed to acquire a medal at the FIBA World Cup, which ended in early September 2023. Sports Illustrated said, “The Lakers star witnessed a disappointing result for Team USA at the FIBA World Cup, as the Americans failed to medal.” He claims he was already planning to join the squad this coming Olympics, but the loss in the World Cup cemented his decision to play. The same reporter for Sports Illustrated stated, “With a shot to recreate one of the most memorable rosters outside of the 1992 Dream Team, it wouldn’t be surprising if James puts it all together and brings many superstars with him to Paris.” In a different report, an SB Nation writer claims, “James is pushing to get pledges from Stephen Curry, Kevin Durant, Jayson Tatum, Anthony Davis, and Draymond Green for one last gold medal run on the game’s biggest international stage.” LeBron James has been motivated by the loss to play this summer and bring along his talented friends. SPORTS 9 Volume 1, October 2023Golf is a sport that requires extreme precision and focus. The smallest things can affect a golf shot: environmental factors, the way that your club makes contact with the ball, and other wild factors. Golf shots can also be considered super lucky because of the way that the ball can bounce, roll, or fly. Some shots might not be really flashy, but they could be vital to winning a world championship. Below are some of the best shots ever taken in golf history. Tiger Woods’ point-at-the-hole putt is a very exciting moment to watch. The shot itself is very simple, and the execution is good. But what makes it a good shot is what was on the line for the shot. It was a completely tied game at this point, and Woods made this amazing putt. As the ball was rolling towards the hole, he walked towards the hole pointing at the ball. In the 1986 Masters, Jack Nicklaus’s drive on the 16th hole flew across the water and landed right next to the hole. He then putted it in right after that. This led him to win the Masters by only one point. TOP TEN GOLF SHOTS EVER By: Bobby Reddick Ben Hogan is responsible for making one of the most iconic golf photos of all time. It’s been given the nickname, “The Pose”. It is one of the best golf pictures taken. 10. Ben Hogan, The Pose, US Open (1950) 9. Tiger Woods, Point-at-theHole Putt, PGA Championship (2000) 8. Seve Ballesteros, British Open (1979) In the 108th British Open, Seve Ballesteros had a crazy series of events. Starting only a couple points ahead of one of his opponents, Ballesteros had hit a horrible shot that ended up as a drop for him. He went on to finish the hole in only two more shots, both of which were amazing. First, he had a chip that landed right on the green after flying high in the air. Second, he had an amazing putt that put him one under par. 7. Jack Nicklaus, Masters (1986) 6. Michael Phelps, 159-Foot Putt, Alfred Dunhill Links Championship (2012) Michael Phelps is widely regarded as being the best olympic swimmer of all time, but he is also surprisingly good at golf! He shot an amazing 159 foot putt which is several greens long. Phelps doesn’t only hold the most gold medals in the Olympics, but he also has the longest televised putt ever. 5. Tom Watson, US Open (1982) On the 18th hole, Watson was tied with his opponent and shot only a single stroke under him. This is probably one of the best examples of a perfect golf shot because it was incredibly fundamental. Consistency is one of the most important aspects of the game of golf and this shot is a great example of someone who made sure that his shot was absolutely perfect.
SPORTS 10 Volume 1, October 2023Tiger Woods began the 18th hole of the 2002 PGA Championship with a drive that landed in the sand bunker. There were multiple trees in the way and he chipped the ball over the top of them and onto the green. The ball landed pretty close to the hole. Justin Leonard made an excellent shot at the 1999 Ryder Cup. He was on the edge of the green and hit the ball with a lot of force. This made it so the ball went in a straight line, but it looked almost as if the ball was going to bounce over the hole. But it didn’t and he went home with the championship. 3. Justin Leonard, Ryder Cup (1999) 2.Tiger Woods, 3-Iron Bunker Short (2002) 1. Tiger Woods, Chip, Masters (2005) Tiger Woods sunk an incredible shot in the final round of the 2005 Masters. He started from the edge of the green, battling its hills and dips. Woods aimed the ball to the far left of the hole and at the top of the hill, it slowly rolled down to the hole and was super close to stopping, but didn’t. After almost coming to a complete stop, the ball rolled into the hole for a dramatic ending to this hole. 4. Bob Tway, PGA Championship (1986) Bob Tway won the 1986 PGA Championship by sinking a shot out of the sand bunker. The difficulty of this shot comes from the fact that there was such a short distance for the ball to go so high. His head was barely poking over the top of the ridge from which he was shooting. The fact that the shot was out of a bunker is the cherry on top. As someone who truly has a passion for the sport, I love seeing people try something new, even outside their comfort zone. I want to inspire others to find that same drive that I have for the sport and hopefully open their eyes to something magical. The Villain Voice ENTERTAINMENT TAYLOR SWIFT LITERALLY RUNS THE WORLD By: Jenna Murphy For those of you who have checked your phone recently, it is almost guaranteed that you have heard of “The Eras Tour.” On March 17, 2023, Taylor Allison Swift began her tour which took the world by storm both through our hearts and in our economy. She has captivated the attention of the federal government as the tour affects the entire financial system in an extremely positive way. This was entirely expected from such a talented artist; however, Swift managed to increase the United States GDP due to the money that her tour brought at each location she performed. This is a huge accomplishment as a GDP is the average market value of all goods and products in a country, and in order to affect that, a substantial amount of revenue must be made. The income that she has received is due to her powerful fanbase who spend on tickets, hotels, outfits, etc., and it is nothing short of fascinating. Not to mention, she is yet to finish the tour in its entirety as she begins internationally on November 9th! 13 Volume 1, October 2023 unnoticed. Caused by the hundreds of thousands of people who came to these tours, revenue was absolutely through the roof, and the small communities were feeling that effect. Each city has reported boosts in revenue among their small businesses, hotels, gas stations and other resourceful places within their area. This has caused a new appreciation towards Taylor, even for people who don’t typically listen to her music because she has sparked new jobs, built up the tourism industry, and so much more. Of course, each town has repaid her in one way or another through recognition such as renaming their town whilst she is there. For reference, as Taylor performed in Minneapolis, Minnesota the city was renamed, “Swiftie - Apolis” for the day in honor of her. All in All, Taylor’s impact on the economy is astonishing and has not gone unnoticed as she builds up communities through her work. This tour will forever leave an impact on America, and we are sure her return to the US next fall will be just as spectacular. answer to this question lies entirely in her fanbase, the Swifties. There are millions of Swifties across the world, and they support Taylor in all she does. For reference, at Bishop McGuinness alone more than half of the students listen to her music and over 12% of students actually attended her tour! To be exact though, the actual tickets cost from $300-$5,000 per person, and that alone has brought in a substantial amount of income; however, the true source of money comes from the other pieces of attending this tour including hotels, transportation, outfits, food, merchandise, etc. This ultimately led to her effect on communities as described previously. Overall, Taylors fans are the reason for her tour's unforgettable economic impact on America, and every one of them have expressed that each dollar was well spent as the tour was nothing short of amazing. Effect on Communities During Swift's U.S. tour, she performed in 20 cities and at each stop she did not go Where Does It Come From? Through all of this you may ask yourself, “Where exactly is the revenue coming from?” The
ENTERTAINMENT 14 Volume 1, October 2023On August 9th, on the closing night of her first US Leg of the “Era’s Tour”, Taylor Swift announced that her 1989 record was being re-released on October 27th, 2023. SWIFT DOES IT AGAIN: 1989 (TAYLOR’S VERSON) By: Elena Orozco The Reason for the Rerecords Big Machine Records was the record label that signed Taylor Swift’s first 6 studio albums; Self Titled, Fearless, Speak Now, Red, 1989, and Reputation. In 2018, Swift left the record label in hopes to own all rights to her next albums, but in the process, the opposite that she hoped for occurred. She lost all copyright claims to her previous albums. Taylor Swift wanted to have ownership of her work so she stated in an interview with CBS that she was going to re-record all of her albums previous to Lover in order to have the copyright claims. The OG 1989 Record 1989 is arguably Swift’s most famous album. It has ruled the charts since its original release date in 2014, Wall Street says, “1989 entered the Billboard 200 on November 15, 2014. It was on the list for an astonishing 412 weeks.” Prior to the official release, Swift released 6 singles. Each one of them stayed on the Billboard charts for at least 7 consecutive weeks, with 3 of them spending at least 4 weeks at number 1. According to a recent survey, nearly 20% of the BMCHS Student Body became a Taylor Swift fan in the 1989 era; if they are a fan at all. 1989 is also the favorite album of 15.4% of BMCHS Students that are also swifties. Also, Taylor Swift is so famous amongst young people that 54.4% of the BMCHS Students listen to her on a regular basis, and the other half are so familiar with 1989 that the majority of the little amount of songs they do know are from that album. Those songs include, “Blank Space”, “Wildest Dreams”, “Out of The Woods”, “Shake it Off”, and a few answers of “Welcome To New York”. Anticipating the Release Fans, critics, and anyone who listens to music is waiting for this album. Pre-ordering on the multiple vinyl variations started the night after the announcement of the release date for 1989 (Taylor’s Version). According to People Magazine, within a singular week of sales, “1989 (Taylor’s Version) has sold over 500,000 copies in preorders, in the US alone.” This album is so awaited by fans that when the vault tracks were being decoded, Google Chrome crashed entirely because of overuse. Taylor Swift announced in an Instagram post that the vault was to be decoded on Google Chrome, and not even a full 10 minutes after that announcement, “Google announces they are fixing the servers for Taylor Swift’s 1989 (Taylor’s Version) vault puzzles after it crashed.” This album is in such heavy anticipation that fans managed to crash a whole internet browser as used as Google for the purpose of decoding vault track names. The decoding was not giving the song or even a snippet, it was simply the name, and still enough users went on to the point the whole site, and later the whole browser crashed for a short period of time. “Taylor’s Version”: Hot or Not? As of now, half of the albums have been re-recorded, Fearless, Red, and Speak Now. Fearless (Taylor’s Version) was released April 9th, 2021. The famous re-released album hit the charts like a bus within a day of being released. It owned the Billboard Hot 100 for 24 weeks. Every song on the album was on the list with “That’s When (Feat. Keith Urban)” at number 1. Swift’s second re-release, Red (Taylor’s Version) was even bigger. She won 2 American Music Awards, and many more. The Award-Winning Artist and Her Award-winning Album Swift’s record (1989) won an abundant amount of awards, and earned much praise. When 1989 won the “Album of the Year” award, the Grammy's said, “Taylor Swift’s fifth studio album establish[ed] her as a fully emerged pop powerhouse.” 1989 is her most awarded album, which is saying a lot since she is the second most awarded artist of all time. Taylor is also “the first and only woman solo artist to win the GRAMMY for Album Of The Year thrice for her solo recordings.” and only 3 other artists have won AOTY three times.

ENTERTAINMENT 17 Volume 1, October 2023Of all the myriad musical genres I have subjected my peers to, none has elicited so positive a response as funk. This should come as no surprise as funk is almost unavoidable to the modern music enjoyer. From Parliament to Vulfpeck, funk has been integral to modern music, and its influence has infiltrated countless other genres. So much of what is popular in music today is rooted in funk that I have even borne witness the uninitiated refer to signs of funk influence as simply “good stuff.” What exactly is the allure of funk? How many more times is he going to say “funk?” A trademark of the funk genre is an emphasis on rhythm. Every member of a funk band is in the rhythm section. From Michael Jackson’s vocal percussion (Ah! Ooh!) to Cory Wong’s relentless rhythm guitar, historically melodious instruments are repurposed in servitude to the groove. Of course, the electric bass, unsung hero of the rhythm section, is front and center in almost every funk song; in fact, many funk melodies form themselves around the gymnastics of the bass player. For all this percussion, the drums themselves are often relegated to a spartan minimalism so that the track doesn’t become too busy; this may seem somewhat counterintuitive: I like to think of it as the fruit of a rhythmic socialism. Herein, I think, lies the WE WANT THE FUNK By: Colin Turner allure of funk: its danceability. Rhythm is the idol of the funk musician and “the rhythm of vision is a dancer.” George Clinton, ringleader of the funk army that is Parliament, coined this phrase, and few grasp the relationship between rhythm and funk better. Every Parliament song is a shag rug of sonic texture. Each instrument has a different syncopation leading to an incredibly dense rhythmic structure. And through it all, a flamboyant vocalist proclaims some nonsense that might fall into some structure that makes sense. Again, rhythm is prioritized above melody and even coherent lyrics making Parliament and funk as a whole superlatively danceable. Counter to Parliament, Vulfpeck pursues a funk minimalism. Band leader, Jack Stratton, constantly harkens back to the great funk minimalist composers of yesteryear as he strips as many parts away from a track as possible. The result is a small band that plays a curt and flavorful sort of funk concentrate. About half the member of Vulfpeck are multiinstrumentalists (Jack Stratton, Theo Katzman, Joey Dosik) so that the band can transform itself to fit the strict needs of the song. Stratton’s minimal compositions paired with the sheer quality of musicianship make Vulfpeck one of the funkiest bands of our generation, and accordingly, I have yet to find someone who could resist moving to their rhythm. In the juice world of funk, Parliament is more of a fruit punch to Vulfpeck’s syrup from concentrate: either way the music is just as sweet. The funk sugar has found its way into also every modern genre of music from pop to rap to probably whatever else you can think of. Nobody can deny the allure of an active bassline and an intriguing rhythm. Even before funk was formally made a genre, the musicians who defined its characteristics were some of the best in music, namely rotating rhythm sections for Aretha Franklin and later Michael Jackson. Since its inception funk has been “good stuff.” George Clinton, sporting a suave haircut, lead an army of funk musicians in his ParliamentFunkadelic endeavors.

The Villain Voice FASHION CAN YOUR MAKEUP TECHNIQUE BEAT SCHOOL AIR? By: Alexandra Cupani Varieties of makeup trends circle the web as we continue to get bored with our techniques. Many girls are dewy while others go for matte, but which one will get me through a day of bad lighting and the frowsy air here at school? 21 Volume 1, October 2023 body, including the chest, neck, and arms”. Unfortunately, Dewy foundation can amplify skin texture. Acne-prone skin usually stands out a lot more with layered dewy products than clear skin. If you are someone who struggles with hyperpigmentation, dewy is not for you. Dewy makeup is also highly moveable, so you cannot touch your face throughout the time of wear. Dewy makeup doesn't last long. Its “not ideal for those with oily skin, as it can make the skin appear greasy and shiny” states modelrocklashes.com. The dewy makeup look, our clean girl aesthetic, gives the “illusion” of a no-makeup makeup look. It is a radiant, luminous view that gives an appearance of healthy glowing skin. Achieving this look is simple and is probably the easiest technique to use, especially if you're a beginner. To start, make sure you have a clean face. Next, moisturize and be sure to apply your SPF. Many recommend using bronzing drops to give your face that healthy tan glow. Apply a light tint, almost like a foundation. A great light “foundation-like” tint is Charlotte Tilbury’s Flawless Filter starting at $50. After a couple more steps of blush, soap brows, mascara, and lip oil, you will have the perfect dewy makeup look. Though this look is a hit, many say it's hard to make it last all day, and especially with an oily skin type, school air will probably get to you. Done up the Dewy Way According to Ipsy.com, dewy foundation tends to have more skincare-like ingredients. “It adds hydration and makes you shine like a dewy little dumpling by reflecting light,” Capparelli says. Dewy foundation contains oils such as jojoba or almond and is usually found in forms like tinted moisturizers or flexible foundations. Ipsy.com states that a dewy foundation tends to plump and fill in the lines of your skin. People with aging skin stay away from matte products because the formula causes their lines to be more pronounced. Ipsy’s website also says a dewy look allows your face to glow and is also very blendable. Glam.com states “Skor Beauty highlights that, because dewy foundation is lightweight, it tends to be easier to blend than matte foundation and can easily be applied with your fingers as well as a brush or sponge. The lightweight consistency also means that you can use it on other areas of your Make it Matte Matte Makeup is a classic and surprisingly has been since the 90’s. The great thing about matte makeup is you could either go for a complete beat or still keep her simple. To achieve a matte makeup look you’ll need your clean moisturized skin along with your SPF. Afterwards, all you need is a great base. This consists of a matte finishing foundation, bronzer and/or contour, blush, and most important: a setting powder. Eyebrows, mascara, and lips are in your hands. With a good setting powder and spray, your makeup will last all day. The only question is, can school air beat the beat on your face? 15 girls were interviewed, and only three out of those 15 prefer matte makeup. Despite these results, the girls who wear matte makeup stated that their look lasts all day while the dewy makeup girls only last a little more than half of the school day. “Matte foundation is a finish that gives you a very polished,

From a survey that was taken, about half of you said you use matte and the other half said dewy. The students that selected matte stated that some lasts them 5 hours and others lasts all day. Students that said dewy stated that it lasts them half or less than half of a school day; some even said it lasts them all day. Matte foundations can be found anywhere from drugstores to higher-end stores. Many girls tend to say drugstore matte makeup products are elite and others keep their business in Sephora. Some highly recommended matte foundations are the E.L.F cosmetics' natural flawless satin foundation, starting at only $6, and a more expensive foundation which is the Dior Forever Clean matte foundation starting at $55. Matte makeup is a good solution for wanting to cover up oily or textured skin. Matte makeup tends to last longer and transfer less. This is great for big events or long days. The girls who are worried about their perfect imperfections can easily cover those blemishes with a matte look. Surprisingly, matte makeup also doesn't clog your pores as much. By: Abigayl Maryo Halloween is just around the corner, and who doesn't like candy while watching TV? Halloween candy comes in all shapes and sizes—sweet and sour, chocolate and gummies— and whatever it is, you'll have a chance to enjoy it. Plus, you're never too old for trick-ortreating. Come along and see these treats and cavities. According to a recent survey, Reese's, a chocolate-covered peanut butter cup made by H.B. Reese, a former Hershey employee, was the most popular candy and liked in the school. Coming in second is Twix. Twix closely fell behind Reese’s because some people claim that the mix of biscuit, caramel, and chocolate in Twix makes it the best candy bar. Its texture is creamy, sweet, and crunchy. Others claim that the fact that it can be eaten by two or more people makes it the best candy. One experiment, however, revealed that Reese's Fast Break tasted superior to both the left and right Twix. The crunch and the wafers were loved by the Twix that was tried, but they were unable to surpass Reese's. In third place is KitKat, with 25 responses. KitKats are praised for their smooth, silky chocolate layer and crunchy wafers, while others appreciate their unique chocolate-covered wafer with a beloved flavor. The consistent tagline "Have a Break, Have a Kit Kat" connects with the audience, promoting the idea of enjoying chocolate anytime, anywhere. Fun fact: in Japan, the KitKat has become an icon. The Japanese love for KitKats is not only limited to the original chocolate wafer bar but also to the wide range of flavors that are exclusive to Japan. Coming in fourth is M&M’s-with 12 responses. “M&M's are a type of chocolate candy that is shaped like buttons and comes in many colors. The candy shell surrounds a filling that varies by variety.” The candy coating is made up of coloring and sugar. The rarest color of M&M is brown, which is only around 13.48% of all M&M's. The Villain Voice CRIME IT’S CRIME TIME By: Ryan Martin It is evident that crime is upon us, but what types of crime should we be most worried about? The three classifications of crime are infractions, misdemeanors, and felonies. An infraction is a violation of an administrative regulation, a municipal code, or a state or local traffic law. Infractions are often called petty offenses, resulting mostly in minor fines without incarceration; examples would include minor traffic violations, licensing issues, and littering. Misdemeanors are crimes that are more serious than infractions, but less serious than felonies. Misdemeanors are usually punishable by fines and/or incarceration. Depending on the seriousness of the crime, the offender could face jail time and even felony charges; examples would include minor drug issues, vandalism, and minor assaults. Felonies are in the most serious classification of criminal behavior, punishable by imprisonment of more than one year in state or federal penitentiaries; examples include murder, kidnapping, and robbery. 32 Volume 1, October 2023 Most Common Crimes Committed by Teen in our Area Here are a few of the most common and current criminal patterns and behaviors that are floating around here in North Carolina, affecting thousands of teenagers. It is important to note that for some of these crimes, juveniles may be charged as minors, while some offenses may constitute charges as if they were adult offenders. Larceny is one of the most common crimes amongst juveniles. Juveniles may steal from stores, their friends, or strangers. They often target items that can easily be disposed of, many of which are cheap. Often, these crimes can go unseen and/or unreported. If not caught, the adolescent may begin to test the water with more valuable items, raising the charges from petty theft to felony larceny. Statistics indicate that theft is the single most occurring juvenile offense. Assault is another common crime amongst adolescents. It is proven that teenagers are more likely to get into fights than any other age group. If a fight occurred at school, the adolescent may be sent to the school resource officer or sent home. Many assaults amongst teens occur in an attempt to steal an item from another person, especially when the victim is willing to put up a fight. Some juvenile offenders act like bullies at school and may include physical violence along with emotional abuse or taunting. Teens may also commit drug and alcohol crimes. They may be charged with possession of alcohol or drugs and they may be arrested for drunk and disorderly conduct. Alcohol-related car crashes are also common in this age group. Teens may be arrested for DUIs, which happen more than you think. Many states have “zero tolerance laws” in which any amount of alcohol is considered legally impaired, like a blood alcohol concentration of 0.02. All to many wrecks and accidents occur from underage drinking and the usage of illegal substances. When taking someone’s property, you are committing a crime called Larceny
CRIME 33 Volume 1, October 2023This table shows the statistics for crimes committed by three different age groups in 2022 in the High Point area. Totaling a whopping 1098 crimes committed by juveniles 17 and under, 65 of which were considered violent crimes. In addition, there were a total of 732 victims within these age groups. High Point Crime Statistics 2022 This pie chart is a comparison of the number of crimes committed by teenages 17 and under on a local level compared to the total amount of crimes committed in the United States. Local crimes, 1098, represent only 0.3% of the total crimes committed in the United States, 424,300. When physically harming or intending to harm another person, you are committing assault

So far, the brand new BMCHS Pep Band (pictured left) has played at two home games, USA and White Out, intending to play for another three. The band, founded by Allie Purgason and music teacher Mr. Bahorich (aka Mr. B), has been very well received by students at the first few games of the season. When asked what they thought of the new addition, students in the Pit were happy to share their opinions. “Many thumbs up!” yelled a senior while a sophomore said, “highlight of the game!”. Why is this the Pep Band’s first year, and what drove Purgason and Bahorich to found it? For Mr. B, inspiration was drawn from the class of 2023 and 2022: Bishop graduates Micheal Golamco, Jackson Goins, Jay Bland III, and Luca Pestana. The recent alumni had a band of their own, playing during homecoming, prom, and the occasional football game. Seeing the band bring joy and excitement to the student body inspired the University of Florida graduate to start an official Pep Band. Allie Purgason has been intrested in music since she 38 Volume 1, October 2023 earned to play the recorder in elementary school. Since transferring to Bishop in her sophomore year, she has taken two years of guitar and had a role in the school musical. This year, she is taking 3 music classes: Choir, Orchestra, and AP Music Theory, and serving as president of the Tri-M Music Honors Society. This passion will follow her for a lifetime, as she intends to major in music after graduating from Bishop McGuinness Catholic High School. Pep Band comprises a variety of members, both those in the orchestra and those who aren’t. It is welcome to anyone who plays an instrument and has a will to play. Mr. B. credits the band members (pictured right) as the heart of the group, saying, “We have a small but mighty group,” while Purgason added, “There are so many talented individuals.” As the year continues, the pair hope to lead the band in playing as many games as possible and continue to spread their love for music and the band.
STUDENT LIFE 39 Volume 1, October 2023Decide on a color palette that works for your hair and skin tone. The quote, “Whether you’re looking for emerald green dresses, red dresses, orange dresses, pink dresses, purple dresses, or light blue dresses, the color of your hoco dress is just as important as the style and fit.” emphasizes how important it is to have a dress color that looks and makes you feel good. Accessories are also a huge aspect to making the whole outfit look good. The quote, “For example, if you’re getting your dress first, choose accessories that complement the details and colors in your dress, and vice versa.” shows that accessories are very important. The photo below shows three girls in different colored dresses that fit their skin tones well. Preparation: Before the Dance Girls: How to shop for the perfect hoco dress: By: Maya Clark Park Place Salon. 3509 Old Battleground Road in Greensboro, North Carolina. A recommended stylist is Rhonda Teague, who has had 25 years in the cosmetological industry. Some examples of services she does include the following: Women's Haircut and Style from $65 Blow Dry and Style from $40 Hair color services range from $95-165 A quote from the salon’s website shows the variety of stylists for customers (students in this article’s case)... “the Salon features a team of beauty professionals, renowned for their vision, leadership, and expertise in their fields.” The following quote describes the salon’s relaxing environment, “the salon is a beautifully refurbished 1940s home with a private courtyard for client respite and relaxation.” which would be a fantastic thing to look forward to before the dance. The store ‘Lulus’ is a great place to shop for dresses, accessories, and shoes. The website has a quote saying, “Once you’ve decided on your look, take it all for a test drive.” Another quote following it emphasizes the Girls: Get your hair/makeup done beforehand and make an appointment. Places to get hair done/price points: HOCO TIPS AND TRICKS Making sure that you feel comfortable in what you will be wearing it will make the night even more enjoyable. Boys: Make sure that your suit fits well. The quote, “Many boys have one suit that they have had for years and use for every occasion. Wearing the suit that is already stored away is not a problem, but make sure it still fits properly and has not been outgrown.” This shows that the fit of the suit is vital. In addition, the quote, “There are many websites from which to rent a suit, such as theblacktux.com and generationtux.com, so do not hesitate to look for a new one if the old one is past its prime.” supports the previous quote Eat a good dinner. Make sure to wear a sufficient amount of deodorant. If you want to ensure you smell great, perfume and cologne are additional great options to apply. Girls: If you are carrying a purse with you to the dance, consider bringing some easily portable makeup in the purse. By the time you’re done eating and taking pictures, you will need to refresh your lip products/whatever importance of trying your clothes on in advance by saying, “Try on your dress and shoes to make sure you can move around in them easily.” These two quotes are amazing pieces of advice for all students attending hoco.
STUDENT LIFE 40 Volume 1, October 2023Retouching makeup before/during the event is sometimes necessary. The quote, “Prepare An Emergency Style Kit. “For what reason? Retouching, of course. It is also a good measure if mishaps and accidents happen during the event.” The quote perfectly represents that having some makeup products on backup is a great idea. Making sure that you have a specific time and destination for taking pictures is a great asset. The recent trend of this year and the previous year is to take your pictures with film cameras/digital cameras. Henceforth, if you happen to have a nice camera on hand- consider using that in addition to your smartphone. Even if you are not in the mood to take pictures, the quote, “As you get older, you may find yourself looking back to this particular moment…” highlights the importance of documenting pictures for special dances, such as hoco. Another quote from the same source states, “Remember to make memories and have fun while you are young.” makeup you are wearing for the night. Taking pictures: You arrange to do this before or after dinner, depending on what you/your group would like to do. Girls Optional: Have an extra pair of nice sneakers/comfortable shoes to wear in case the heels you wear are causing too much discomfort. Boys: Make sure your tie is straight and centered. https://www.thearcadiaonline.co m/preparing-for-homecominghere-are-some-tips/ During the dance: Drink lots of water/refreshments. You will be surrounded by many teenagers, all packed up in one setting for the dance, so you will probably sweat. Post-dance: Get lots of sleep and rest. Your body is probably very tired of the day full of activities. Girls: make sure to take care of your feet after the dance; they will most likely be sore due to dancing and walking in the heels STANLEYS, ARE THEY WORTH IT? BY: WILHELMINA BENNETT The Stanley Cup popularity is on the rise. With millions owning this industrial size water bottle, people have opinions. Whether it was a gift from your grandma or something you saw and thought was cool on Tik Tok, lots of people have them and they are gaining popularity by the minute. Now the question is, are they worth it? The Stanley Cup Origins are Different Than You Think The original Stanley Thermos that was created mainly for hikers, workers, and fisherman. (pictured below) The original Stanley was created over 100 years ago in 1913 by a man named William Stanley Jr. The Original Stanley was designed as a traveling thermos for tough, manly adventurers. The demographic for this rough and tumble thermos was mostly male, unlike the high female demographic that the brand sees today. In 2017, The Stanley brand partnered with a team of female bloggers who said that they would use “women selling to women '' to show a strong female connection between the customers and the sellers. The Stanley is very largely popular amongst Millennial and Gen Z
STUDENT LIFE 41 Volume 1, October 2023This water bottle keeps your water cold for up to eleven hours, which is great when you have a long day of school plus after school activities. It fits in a car cup holder. Amazing for an on-the-go drink. It comes in almost 40 colors. It comes in different sizes. Sizes include: 64 oz, 40 oz, 30 women, leaning closely toward high schoolers and early college students. Unpopular Opinion More than half of the students here at BMCHS don't own a stanley, and some didn't really care about the water bottle as a whole. Almost a quarter of students thought that the Stanley was too expensive and overhyped. The few students who own a Stanley love it, but desperately feel that it needs some improvements such as a better spill proof lid, and it could be more lightweight and not as heavy. On the other hand, Stanley users enjoy the cups for a myriad of reasons. Senior, Bella Bridges says that her favorite part about her Stanley is that it fits in the cup holder of her car which you really don't see with a lot of larger water bottles like Hydroflask or Nalgene. Pros and Cons There are many great things about the Stanley Cup, but there are also some things that aren't so great. Here is my list of pros and cons, Pros Definitely not spill proof. Multiple students said that the hole that the straw goes through often leaks and drips. Cost a few extra bucks. The price can range from anywhere from $25 to $75, and the size of the Stanley impacts the total cost. oz, 20 oz, and 15 oz. Cons Final Verdict In conclusion, I think that the Stanley Cup is totally worth it! It comes in so many sizes and colors to cater the person's personality and preference when it comes to water bottles. The Stanley Cup is easily portable with the handle, and the fact that it fits in a cup holder is even better. The Stanley cup is definitely a great water bottle for a busy teen in high school. Another huge thing about the pit is coming in the right dress, you want to make sure you show up to the game in the night's theme. That way you'll have a fancy fit to show off. Outfits: Every Friday there are themes for the games. For example, if it's a white out theme, then you dress in all white. (unless you're a senior then you can wear a toga) You can also get very creative with the themes at Bishop. There are always a bunch of groups that dress in the same outfit and bring the energy of the theme for the game that night. Chants: Key to coming to a Bishop McGuinness football game is to know the chants! If you are in the pit and don't know the chants, then you are going to feel very awkward. They're easy to pick up though so it shouldn't be a worry. NEW CLUBS AT BISHOP BY: YIANNI SKOTEINIADIS PACK THE PIT: A SURVIVAL GUIDE BY: AIDON INGLE When it comes to the Friday night football games, they’re always the big talk around Bishop Football. The amount of hype that comes with it is outrageous and it’s all building up for The Pit! Everyone can come to the games, and they’re great opportunities to socialize with other students that you may have not seen before. You can also enjoy the concession stand food for a good price of $1 for pizza. However, there are rules that come with The Pit. Rules for The Pit: When you attend a Bishop McGuinness football game, it is almost required that you know the rules. Most of these rules are unwritten and just assumed by every pit veteran. Some rules are the following. Freshmen have to be in the back of the bleachers, and if you aren't then you will probably get yelled at by a mean senior. You have to understand that if you are an underclassmen and not a senior, you are going to be in the back of the bleachers and most of the time depending on who you know that will happen. At Bishop, clubs are founded and run by the students. Clubs allow students to enjoy shared interests and immerse themselves in the school community. Bishop students can join multiple clubs but usually commit to one or two. Every year, upperclassmen (juniors and seniors) can create a new club to add to Bishop’s club roster. This ensures that the clubs stay relevant and exciting for the student body. So, what are the new clubs for the new school year? There are a total of nine new clubs, and below there is a description of Bishop’s new
STUDENT LIFE 43 Volume 1, October 2023clubs for the 2023-2024 school year. Pep Band Created by Allie Purgason (‘24), and moderated by Mr. Bahorich (Mr. B), the pep band club is a group of kids who play music at all home sporting events such as football and basketball games. Purgason says, “Bishop has needed a Pep Band for a long time! I thought it was about time we got one. I also thought it would be really fun and that people would enjoy live music at games.” Purgason enjoys playing clarinet with the pep band. By the end of her senior year, she hopes to perform at as many games as possible. Black Student Union The Black Student Union is run by President Neveah Fears (‘24), Reagan Davis (‘27), and Amiliana Brooks (‘27) and is moderated by Mrs. Davis. President Neveah Fears said, “Our club is a space for all to feel welcome and become more educated on black culture and lifestyle, and raise money to support underserved neighborhoods and areas.” Brooks, Davis, and Fears hope to educate their members as much as possible and hope to teach each of their members something new at each club meeting. Sports Media Club Run by Gracie Stalek (‘24) and Bacall Sellars (‘24) and moderated by Mrs. Kloesz, the Sports Media Club was brought to Bishop because of Stalek’s passion for photography. Stalek says, “I started this club out of passion and what I personally wanted to do as a career. A lot of people love my work, and I was fed to share and help others who have similar interests as me with sports and social media/news at Bishop. I wanted to make a mark on Bishop and hopefully make a change with it continuing after I graduate!” If you want to see some of Stalek’s photography, follow her on Instagram at @graciecamille.photos. Publications Club Run by co-editors Morgan Johnston (‘24) and Colin Turner (‘24) and moderated by Mrs. Katsos, the Publications Club, according to Mr. Turner, “is just supposed to be a study hall for Publications members.” Students at Bishop can take Publications with Mrs. Katsos as an elective, utilize the club period to work on their articles, and get advice from the editors and Mrs. Katsos. PAWS CLUB Started by Eva Skoteiniadis (‘25) and Olivia Stone (‘25) and moderated by Mrs. Pearlman, the PAWS club has aimed to raise awareness about animal shelters and show their impact on animals. Skoteiniadis says, “I work at a veterinary hospital, and I volunteer at the Forsyth Humane Society as well. I chose to start my club because I wanted others to have the same experience I had about learning how shelters have such a big impact on our community!” The PAWS club plans to take a trip later in the year to help at the Humane Society. Skoteiniadis and Stone hope to raise awareness and help as many animals as possible with their club throughout the year. Golf Appreciation Club Run by Burns Handy ('25) and Henry Chase (‘25) and moderated by Coach Bowen, the Golf Appreciation Club was created to help teach about Golf. The club was also created to help share Handy’s and Chase’s enthusiasm for Golf. Chase and Handy hope to teach members more about the sport during the course of the school year. Hispanic Appreciation Club Run by Amanda Geddie-Garcia (24), Emelia Allred (‘24), Alessandro Lopez-Morales (‘24), Samantha Cruz (‘24), Susanna Drake (‘24), and Theresa Schulteis (‘24), the Hispanic Appreciation Club is a club at Bishop that wants to teach its members about Hispanic culture through exciting ways like dance and food. STUDENT LIFE 44 Volume 1, October 2023MOST POPULAR BACKPACKS BY: SAMMI SCHULTEIS Sunshine for Seniors Run by Evie Vu (‘25) and Hannah Kirkland (‘25), the Sunshine for Seniors club aims to cheer seniors up. Vu says, “I hope to spread joy to senior citizens at local retirement homes through arts and crafts. I enjoy making crafts and spreading joy to others, so I combined the two together and created my club. I was inspired by a similar club at school called Crafts4Kids, but their focus was more on kids, so I wanted to start a craft club aimed towards senior citizens.” Vu and Kirkland hope to make many seniors happy with their arts and crafts projects throughout the year. Take my Hand Uganda Kate Dennen (‘25) and Clare Bandle (‘25) run the club Take My Hand Uganda, a service club inspired by Dennen's experience this past summer. Dennen says, “I went on a mission trip to Uganda this summer through an organization called Take My Hand Uganda. I would do anything for the kids and friends I met there who are our age, and I hope to bring awareness of their lives and school experience compared to ours.” Dennen and Bandle aim to raise $500 by the end of the 1st semester and hope to raise as much awareness as possible about impoverished communities in countries such as Uganda. When it is time to go back to school shopping, a new backpack is one of the most exciting things to purchase. Backpacks can express your personality and your sense of style. A backpack is a necessity for your everyday student life. So when the time comes to purchase one, which one are you choosing? This is Beau Martin (bottom left). He is a freshman at Bishop. Beau said he chose this backpack because his mom bought it for him. This is Francesca Daccio (above right). She is a sophomore at Bishop. She said she chose this backpack because it's brown, and you won’t be able to tell if it gets dirty. This is Ward Bennet (next coluum: left). He is a junior at Bishop. Ward said he chose this backpack because it is not like the others and the difference is good. This is Neveah Fears (above right). She is a senior at Bishop. She said she chose this backpack because she loves the color and thought it would be super cute for her junior and senior year. Backpacks add a layer of protection to your belongings. According to a poll sent out to all Bishop McGuinness Catholic High School students, it is no surprise that North Face won with 102 votes. Most respondents said people bought this because it is durable and comfortable. In second place, with 63 votes, is Adidas. Most people said they voted for this because it is very spacious. You have several color choices with both of these backpacks. They differ with various color choices, such as plain black, turquoise blue, brown, and almost any color possible. Considering these top two choices, which one would you use?
STUDENT LIFE 45 Volume 1, October 2023A REALISTIC LOOK INTO COLLEGE APPLICATIONS College. A single word that holds so much anticipation, fear, and curiosity. Applying to college is a process everyone remembers, that guardians, parents, and relatives reminisce about. However, what does it look like for a Bishop Senior? Read more to find out! Tales of Tours and Testing Students can start two essential parts of the college process, testing and college tours, as soon as their junior year! There are two main college admissions tests: the ACT and the SAT. What’s the difference between these two standardized tests? Forbes says that the difference lies with“ “Scoring scales and ranges. SAT scores range from 400 to 1600, and ACT composite scores range from 1 to 36.” and “Test format and sections. The SAT includes reading, writing and language, math (with calculator), and math (no calculator). The ACT includes English, math, reading, science, and writing (optional essay).” Students also have the ability to go test-optional, meaning they won’t submit their scores. According to a recent survey, among those who responded, 44.4% of Bishop’s class of 2024 are applying tests optional, 38.9% are applying with the ACT, and 16.7% are applying with the SAT. The other part of the college process students can start before senior year is touring schools. This lets schools know a student is interested in them and is an excellent way for students to eliminate or add schools to their list! These tours can provide some interesting stories! One student, who would like to remain anonymous, shared that they “ toured Duke, and it was a dreadful 6 hours”. Another senior, Nevaeh Fears, shared that she “didn’t like Auburn when I first went because there was no one on campus.” However, not all experiences are negative! One student reports touring a college and having a fellow prospective student claim that “their dream was to be a circus clown, but that didn’t pay enough, so she would have to settle for aerospace engineering.” Many seniors report stepping onto the campus of their dream college, and falling in love! Naviance Novella At Bishop, we are given an incredibly helpful resource starting Freshman year! This resource is called Naviance! For seniors, this resource is a lifeline! On Naviance, seniors can access everything from scholarship information to admissions scattergrams to help them decide their safety, match, and reach schools. Seniors can also track their college deadlines and sign up to visit with college representatives who come to Bishop. Common App Chronicles The common application is a centralized online platform that allows applicants to store all their information in one place and send it to many colleges. The common application can be linked to Naviance, which helps students track their deadlines, request transcripts, and ask for recommendations. The Common Application also makes it easy for students to establish their NC state residency. This allows North Carolina residents to get in-state tuition for all the UNC system schools, including everything from Appalachian State to Eastern Carolina University to UNC Chapel Hill. Receiving instate tuition reduces the cost of college for seniors tremendously. Another big part of the common application is the essay prompts. Many schools ask for a personal statement, known to the seniors as the Common App Essay. The prompts are usually held constant from year to year, and there are seven in total. Submission Stories After students write their essays and ask for recommendations, there are still a few steps before they can hit the submit button. First, they have to request their transcripts. This is done through the student brag sheet and a transcript request form, both available in the counseling center. Then, students must pay application fees to the colleges they are applying to. According to a recent survey, the average Bishop senior is applying to 5 colleges this year. This year's most popular colleges for BMCHS seniors include Elon, UNC Chapel Hill, NC State, UNC Greensboro, UNC Charlotte, Wake Forest University, William and Mary, and Appalachian State. After all this work, students get to hit the “submit” button and see digital confetti! Yay, Seniors! By: Caroline Kunkle
STUDENT LIFE Overall, the Bishop freshman seem to be settling into our Villain Nation with the help of our teachers, religious staff, and older students. There are still many things to look forward to for the BMCHS class of 2027 and we hope they enjoy it just like they have so far. After all, “it’s actually more fun than middle school.” (Strafaci) 46 Volume 1, October 2023WHAT ARE THE NEW VILLAINS THINKING? Freshman year is a time of new friends, activities, lessons, and, overall, brand new experiences. The transition is not known for being easy, but the students of Bishop McGuinness seem to be finding their place in the school’s activities and classes they will call home for the next four years. A staple of freshman year is navigating the new academic experience, whether it is new classes or a higher workload than they've seen before. Besides the actual material, students are able to discover a new approach to teaching. Elena Orozco (pictured above) says, “I went to IHM (Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic School) and the workload was a lot different. We got a lot of busy work but here they give us work to actually be a better student, not just to give us work. The teachers respect you as a student a lot more.” Many, like her, have noticed Bishop’s clear intention to make students more successful and be able to advance in their favorite areas such as art for Sal Strafaci and English I for Stella Ropko. Besides academics, new villains are able to branch out in many ways to try new or old things to uncover a different side of the Bishop experience. When asked about what he is excited about in the coming year, Beau Martin tells us, “I’m excited for the rest of the football season”, while Orozco is more excited for homecoming and the overall freedom that comes with being a high school student. This past September, the freshmen were able to leave campus for a day and take part in their first of another Bishop tradition. This year, their religious retreat took place at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church in Greensboro where many of our school’s families are parishioners. Students are able to have group discussions, participate in Mass, and do many activities, including a letter to their future selves which they will be able to open their senior year. Strafaci has this to say about the day, “It was good. My favorite part was the water games.” All in all, the students seemed to really enjoy their retreat, or at least a day off from the sometimes hectic school activities. By: Amanda Geddie-Garcia
