Given that Americans consume over 10 billion, or $3.6 billion USD
worth of donuts each year, they don’t really need an excuse to devour
the gooey fried treat. However, if you are among the minority that

does, you are in luck because Friday, June 2, is National Donut Day.

Celebrated annually on the first Friday of the month, the holiday’s
origin can be traced back to Salvation Army workers who volunteered
to help injured US troops during World War I (WWI).

DRAGON’S TAIL

Arbor Day is an annual observance that celebrates the role of
trees in our lives and promotes tree planting and care. As a for-
mal holiday, it was first observed in 1872, in Nebraska, but tree
planting festivals are as old as civilization. The tree has appeared
throughout history and literature as the symbol of life. In the
United States, Arbor Day is on the last Friday in April.

Every year, Mr. Romanik puts together an Arbor Day event for the
7th graders to show the importance of the this day. Students
volunteered to speak at the event and a handful of students
helped plant a tree in front of the Woodruff School in honor of
the lunch aide, Donna Rempfer, who recently retired after 27
years with us.

On May 12th, 2017 the 6th grade class attended a class trip that included a visit to
the Franklin Institute. Students started their day by observing several of the mu-
seum’s traditional exhibits. These exhibits included three floors of fun-filled infor-
mational centers. Floor one included such exhibits as the Space Command and
The Train Factory. The class journeyed to floor two and found Your Brain, the Sci-
Store, the Amazing Machine, and Electricity to be exciting and a great learning
experience. The trip only seemed to gain momentum as the 6th grade visited Sir
Isaac’s Loft and the SportsZone on floor three. The trip concluded with a fabulous
Imax showing of “The Sky Tonight.” Students were informed about the constella-
tions with a heavy emphasis covering Greek mythology. In all, the class of 2019
can count this trip as one for the memory book!

On May 25, the 7th graders went on the 110 foot Cape May Whale Watching tour. It has
dolphin and whale watching in Cape May, Wildwood, Stone Harbor, Atlantic City and the
rest of the New Jersey Shore area since 1993. The kids enjoyed a two hour tour of the ar-
ea and experienced the beauty of the water while seeing many dolphins in the process.
After the tour, the students explored the beach and its wonder by having a scavenger hunt
that was in connection to their Science class. While fighting off the clouds all day, it ended
up being an amazing day. It definitely was a memorable trip.

On May 30th, the 8th graders went to the FunPlex in Mount Laurel for
some super FUN! They experienced the sights and sounds of the Board-
walk...all indoors! They had a blast on the indoor thrill rides and won BIG
prizes at the arcade. There was even a bowling alley and mini golf. This
trip was a nice culmination of all the 8th graders hard work all year. A day
of fun and adventure for all.

On May 23, 2017 at 6:00 pm twenty-seven 8th
graders were inducted into the Junior Honor Soci-
ety.

The evening started with Alyssa Lee giving the
opening speech. Averi Sprouse led the group in
the Pledge Allegiance. Ta’Naysia Collier intro-
duced Dr. Koza. Amad Ross, Brooklyn Richmond,
Aashee Patel, Rosa Salvatierra, Emily Wilchensky,
and Madeline Ott gave the Lighting of the Candle
speeches while Amber Dickinson lit the candles.
Dr, Koza led the induction and presented the stu-
dents with their certificates. Ryan Ott gave the
closing speech.

There were about 100 family members in the
audience to help celebrate this milestone with the
inductees. All members should be very proud of
themselves.

The Dragon Run took place on Saturday May 6, 2017 at the
Woodruff School. There were about 100 runners of all ages
that participated in this years’ event.

The following Woodruff School students and staff received
an award in their age group.

Something's bugging you at the beginning of the week, but you can't quite put your finger on
what it is. You want to be emotional on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, but the situation
you're in requires an intellectual response. There's a time for fun, but this isn't it! Show them
what you've got, and they'll stop asking you to prove yourself.

Pisces (February 19 - March 20 )
You are totally on top of your game on Monday, but not everyone wants to hear about it. The
person you're most attracted to on these days wants to do their own thing. Save your money at
the end of the week; you're tempted to buy something shiny and new on Friday and Saturday,
but your money is way better off in the bank.

Title: Dead Upon a Time
Author: Elizabeth Paulson
Total Pages: 211
Total Chapters: 18
Genre: Fairy Tale/Horror
Theme: Teamwork makes anything possible!
Summary: Kate Hood is a young teen who jumps from house to house, whose only relative is her grand-
mother, who goes missing one day. She goes to find Jack Haricot, who hides in the forest. After Princess
Ella gets kidnapped, Kate and her new ally Jack Haricot are captured and given the task of bringing her
back. Unknown to each other, the two secretly have a crush on each other. Later, Jack is abducted by vul-
tures and taken into captivity. Will Jack and Kate survive, or will the kidnapped people never be freed?
An inference I made while reading Dead Upon a Time was that Kate’s parents died. I inferred this due to
the fact that her parents didn't appear throughout the whole book. I was wrong, however, because near
the end of the book it is revealed that Kate's father and mother are alive and that they were actually hid-
ing.
What type of mood did this book conjure up in you? Explain.: It's a bit dark, and seemingly forlorn and
has a baleful overtone throughout the story, but with an undertone showing some hope. I had this mood
because even though Jack and Kate are both outcasts socially, with Jack living in the forest and Kate
switching houses night-to-night to sleep, they both have crushes on each other and hopefully one
day will admit their love to each other. Not to mention their determination to find the kidnapped people
and rescue them.
I liked this book because…: I like fairy tales, and I could recognize a few characters from the stories that I
read as a child. I also love the way that seems turned on its head. I didn't expect Jack to be hated by the
whole village, nor did I expect Kate, who's based off little Red Riding Hood, to be hated by most, if not all
of the village; I even grinned at the characters in ironic situations. A raven-haired girl, who obviously
seems to be a reference to Snow White, is stuck in a room with poisoned apples, a pair of twins, obvious-
ly Hansel and Gretel, are in a room that gets hotter and hotter, to the point of them cooking alive (and be-
ing revived by Kate), and a girl that was shaved bald, presumably Rapunzel. Not to mention Ella, who has
a stepmother and stepsisters, all of whom are evil, and all four of them are a reference to Cinderella.

Title: Between Shades of Gray
Author: Ruta Sepetys
Total Pages: 338
Total Chapters: 85
Genre: Historical Fiction
Theme: What goes around, comes around.
Summary: Just when Lina, the protagonist, has everything going her way, she is faced with her worst
nightmare; she gets separated from her father and taken by the NKVD. Having control over thousands of
“criminals” including Lina, the NKVD officers take complete advantage of them. Now, Lina must make a
decision, fight for what is right with the consequence of death hanging over her or stay quiet with her
brother and wait for whatever punishment they get. The choice is hers, but with either choice comes one
end result, death.
An example of symbolism in Between Shades of Gray was the scar on Lina’s forehead which people re-
ceive if they misbehave in front of a NKVD officer. The hidden or deeper meaning is the courage, bravery,
and sacrifice that Lina showed while being stranded in Trofimovsk. The other symbolic meaning is that if
you have a goal in life then no matter what obstacles you must face, you will always end up achieving
them; Lina set the goal that she will abscond Trofimovsk, find the ones she loves, and return home, which
she achieved.
Compare this book to a bubble gum flavor. Explain.
If I was to compare “Between Shades of Gray” to a bubble gum flavor, I would chose the gum Big Red with
the cinnamon flavor. I would chose this due to the fact that throughout the story the book never lost it’s
flavor and I was glued to the book 24/7. The Big Red gum with the cinnamon flavor has flavor for a long-
period of time and it is very spicy just like the book.
I liked this book because of the never-ending emotions that crawled up inside me while reading the story.
