East, West prep for competitive district
BY REY CASTILLO

Victoria East and Victoria West are pre- paring for their second season in District 15-5A, Division I.
The Titans and Warriors joined the new- ly aligned district last season, with East finishing fourth to clinch a playoff berth.
The Titans put together a 5-3 record against West, Corpus Christi Carroll, Flour Bluff, Veterans Memorial, King, Miller, Moody and Ray.
“CCISD is a quality district,” said East coach Roland Gonzalez. “They have real- ly good programs over there. We went out there and faced adversity, and our kids won the games we needed to win. We’re excited to return to this district. Our focus will be to stay healthy and create depth.”
West hopes things will be different this season after missing a postseason ap- pearance.
The Warriors finished 5-5 last season but hope to improve with the return of
quarterback Donovan Harris; running backs Tyvon Hardrick and Jonathan Buck- ner; wide receiver Kevin Rankin; lineback- ers Bill Sciba and James Avery; defensive linemen Tyler Miller, Colten Matus and Beau Sciba; and safety Bryce Sitka.
“This is going to be an extremely tough district,” said West head coach Courtney Boyce. “Almost every team is bringing back players and has explosive players on both sides of the football.”
West hopes to clinch a playoff berth for the first time since 2017.
The Warriors are in place to make a run after being picked to finish fourth in Dave Campbell’s Texas Football Magazine pre- season District 15-5A poll.
“It’s going to be a grind,” Boyce said. “We have to take things day by day and fo- cus on ourselves.”
Veterans Memorial captured the district championship last season with a 8-0 record.

Victoria East’s Ethan White will start the season with new and familiar team- mates.
But it’s nothing the senior quarter- back didn’t expect.
“Everyone knows what they have to do,” White said. “We just have to ex- ecute it. Last year was good for me to gain experience. Everyone is willing to learn and put effort in to make a team.”
White is one of eight returning starters.
East also returns offensive linemen Hunter Crump and Dedrick Porter; wide receiver Koby Levigne; safeties Tyree Haynes and Cyrus Sanchez; and defensive tackle Christian Mancillas.
“I feel like we have potential to do something special,” Levigne said. “With the talent we have, we can get the job done.”
The Titans put together a 5-6 season last year and a posted a 5-3 mark in Dis- trict 15-5A, Division I play.
East hopes to do better after advanc- ing to the Class 5A bi-district round – the team’s third playoff appearance in the last four seasons.
“Young people are stepping up this year,” said East running back William Garley. “The younger players are ask- ing the older players questions.”
Garley is happy to be back on the field after missing last season with an elbow injury.
“It’s a new start and a new beginning,” Garley said. “It feels good to be back.
East head coach Roland Gonzalez expects his team to compete despite losing 29 seniors a sea- son ago. Gonzalez, who begins his eighth season as head coach at East, knows depth has been an issue but hasn’t shied away from keeping the team’s goals the same.
“We have to stay healthy,” Gonzalez said. “We have to create depth and try to give the kids the best chance to be successful every time they hit the field.”
The Titans begin their second sea- son in District 15-5A, Division I.
Last season, East defeated Victoria West, Corpus Christi King, Carroll, Miller and Moody but fell to Veter- ans Memorial, Ray and Flour Bluff.
But the Titans have two pre- season games to focus on before opening district play Sept. 13 at Corpus Christi Miller.
East will open the season Aug. 30 at Co- lumbia. The Titans’ home opener is Sept. 6 against Gregory-Port- land.
“We have to come out and work hard,” said East lineback- er Ethan Farias.
“We don’t want to have the season we had last year. We want to come out and go deeper
in the play- offs.”

The Eagles, who return six play- ers on offense and five players on defense, advanced to the regional round before falling to Mission Veterans Memorial.
“In this district, every team is competitive from top to bottom,” said Veterans Memorial coach Cody Simper. “Both Victoria teams bring an interesting dynamic to this district. They’re very athletic teams, and they are well-coached. Coach Gonzalez and Boyce do a great job, and both teams will be in the mix for playoff spots and in the hunt for a district championship.”
Ray and Flour Bluff also made
the postseason, but Veterans Me- morial has been picked to win this season’s district title.
According to the Dave Camp- bell’s Texas Football maga- zine preseason state Class 5A, Division I poll, the Eagles, Bucca- neers, Warriors and Hornets are expected to make the playoffs.
“Our expectations are to earn the right to be one of the four in the end,” said Miller coach Justen Evans. “We play in a really good district, and there will be eight other teams that will have a say about that. But we feel like we can be in the hunt.”
Evans said he isn’t taking any teams lightly. He knows any team can present a challenge on any given night.
“East and West are both very talented teams,” Evans said. “West is returning a lot of players from last year. “They’re one of the best teams coming back and should be competing for a playoff spot. East lost some people, but I believe Coach Gonzalez does a good job and will have them ready to play.”
The Buccaneers lost the final three games of the season to miss a playoff berth but return 17 starters, including quarterback Andrew Body and receiver Ralph Rodriguez.
“We have to focus on finishing down the stretch,” Evans said. “We can’t drop the last three like we did last year.”
East’s five district wins came against West, King, Carroll,
Miller and Moody.
The Warriors defeated Ray,
King, Moody and Flour Bluff.
“I think our team can be very good this year,” said West line- backer James Avery. “There is still a lot of stuff that we need to work on, but we just have to take things game by game and focus on
improving each week.”
The Titans hope for another
postseason run with the return of quarterback/wide receiver Ethan White; offensive linemen Hunter Crump and Dedrick Porter; wide receiver Koby Lavigne; lineback- er Ethan Farias; safeties Tyree Haynes and Cyrus Sanchez; and defensive tackle Christian Man- cillas.
The Titans will begin district
play Sept. 13 at Corpus Christi Miller.
“I feel like we have experience of what kind of formations this dis- trict has,” Levigne said. “We can get a game plan together that will help us beat them.”
“It’s a good district,” added East linebacker Ethan Farias. “We’ll have to work hard as a team in or- der to get the job done.”
The Warriors open district play Sept. 13 against Moody at Memo- rial Stadium.
“Every senior this year has to be a leader,” Avery said. “We have to have every one of us bring up the younger classes coming in. We have to lead the team and show these younger kids the way to practice hard.”

Victoria West coach Courtney Boyce is fo- cused on bringing his team closer together after an up-and-down 2018.
“We want this team to be a family,” he said. “At the end of the day, that is the most important thing for us. We want this to be a brotherhood.”
The Warriors finished last season with a 5-5 record and went 4-4 overall in District 15-5A. The team had a similar season in 2017, when they finished 5-5 with a 3-3 dis- trict record.
While it was good enough to get West to the playoffs two years ago, it was not in 2018, the team’s first year in District 27-5A, Division I.
Bryce Sitka, who was voted by his team- mates as defensive and team MVP last sea- son, experienced the playoffs two years ago in his first varsity season.
“My goal for this team is to get back to the playoffs,” Sitka said. “I made it there as a sophomore, and it was a great feeling. Hopefully, we can do that again this year.”
The Warriors return nine starters, three on offense and six on defense. Among them is running back Tyvon Hardrick, who has a chance to break the city rushing record this year.
Hardrick ended his junior season with 1,837 yards rushing and 29 touchdowns to bring his career rushing yardage to 2,787. He would need to run for 1,996 yards this
year to break Victoria West graduate Gar- maquise Girdy’s mark of 4,783 yards.
Donovan Harris returns at quarterback for the Warriors as well. Boyce views the wealth of experience as an asset for the team.
“Having returners like that is a great thing,” he said. “They bring knowledge and can help teach the younger guys, which is very important. They know what it is like to compete and work day in and day out.”
Sitka and senior linebacker Beau Sciba will anchor the defense. The two combined to record 168 tackles in their junior season.
“I think we have a really good chance to be a good defense this year,” Sitka said. “We have a mix of guys returning and younger guys, but we have been working hard over the summer. I think our new guys can step up to the job.”
On the offensive side of the ball, Harris expects the team to be explosive, and he has high hopes for the season.
“I feel like we can win our district,” he said. “I think we have a lot of people step- ping up and doing a good job so far. I just feel if we all get on the same page, then we can do something serious.”
While players may have lofty expecta- tions, Boyce remains firmly planted in the present.
“You can’t get caught up with looking at things down the line,” he said. “We have to focus on the day-to-day and getting better each week.”

PORT LAVACA – Calhoun re- turned to the playoffs last sea- son after a two-year absence, advancing to the state quarterfi- nals before losing to Calallen 48- 17 despite a halftime lead.
For coach Richard Whitaker, the loss still doesn’t sit well.
“We felt like we left something on the field in that last game,” he said. “We were ahead at halftime and laid an egg in that second half. That is something that we have talked about all year. First, we have to get back to the playoffs. But both our coaches and the kids feel like if we can get back and make a run, then we can make it to that next level.”
The Sandcrabs return 11 start- ers from a year ago, including quarterback Conner Kestler, first team all-state fullback Steve Johnson, slot back Jarius Stew- art, offensive tackle Caleb Har- rington, linebacker Cade Kveton, and linebacker Esteban Rodri- guez.
The team will have many new faces on the offensive line, but Kestler isn’t worried.
“We have most of our backfield coming back,” he said, “but we do have a new offensive line. I feel like they can step it up, though, and I think the line will help us do the same things we did last season.”
Kestler returns after running for 1,865 yards and 31 touch- downs while chipping in eight touchdowns through the air as well.
On defense, the team will be led by three senior linebackers. Among these is Cade Kveton, who was named second-team all-state last season. He finished the year with 148 tackles and two sacks.

The defense will have new faces as well, as the Sandcrabs will be tasked with replacing their entire secondary.
“This defense can be very good,” Kveton said. “We might be a little young, but I don’t think that will be a problem for us. I think it will be a strong unit this year.”
Whitaker believes Calhoun is good enough to challenge for a district championship and has higher aspirations for his team in the playoffs.
“Our No. 1 goal is to get into
the playoffs, our No. 2 goal is to play deep into the playoffs, and our No. 3 goal is to win a district championship,” Whitaker said. “That’s how we approach every year. Hopefully, we can accom- plish all three and it would be a very successful season.”
Whitaker knows that District 15-5A won’t be a cakewalk, and he wants his team to be ready for what is ahead.
“Our district is extremely tough,” Whitaker said. “I think there are only two teams that have to replace their quarterbacks
this year. There are just so many quality players back. That’s why our first goal is to get into the playoffs. You have to take care of business within the district before you start thinking about playoffs.”
Kestler is prepared to lead the team and wants to end his high school football career on a good note.
“I want to do the same thing we did last year if not more,” Kestler said. “I want to play further in the playoffs and hopefully win a district title.”

Bobby Jack Wright didn’t waste any time jumping into his role as the athletic director for the Victo- ria school district.
Wright, 68, had a long coaching career on the high school and college levels before coming out of retirement to take charge of VISD’s athletic programs.
Wright’s first official day on the job was July 1, and he has been working closely with VISD Superintendent Quintin Wright, deputy superintendent of oper- ations Greg Bonewald and as- sistant athletic director Spencer Gantt on developing plans to im- prove the athletic program.
“I want to make it as good for them as we can possibly make it,” he said. “Then you can say they’ve got all the resources at their disposal to be successful. If we don’t give them the opportu- nity to be successful, then that’s on us.”
With the volleyball season underway and football season ready to start, Wright shared some thoughts on the state of VISD athletics.
Q: No playoff games were played at Memorial Stadium last season. You’ve said the turf at Memorial Stadium barely passed a safety test and will have to be replaced after this season. What needs to be done to upgrade the stadium and improve the district’s other facilities?
A: What we’d all like to see is this place becoming a sports complex again, much like any multi-school district in the state. You’ve got a football stadium that is really a good stadium. It’s got great bones. It just needs a little redo. You need new turf, and it needs some repair on the concession stands, locker rooms and restrooms. There needs to be some money put into that
to get them up to speed. That’s the first thing. That being said, we’ve had people come in, look at it and survey our property from the standpoint of possibly putting in a permanent soft- ball field and redoing this old
baseball field and getting it back up to speed. Then, resurfacing the track and putting lights so we can hold a track meet. Our vi- sion is to turn this into the VISD sports complex where all of our major sports are right here.
Q: A bond issue floated by the school district that would have included facility upgrades was voted down. How will the dis- trict fund the improvements?
A: The big issue is money.
I’m the new guy on the block. All I’ve heard about is how the bond failed, the bond failed. Well, OK, the bond failed. That’s past history. Everybody needs to move on. I wasn’t here, and
I wasn’t part of it. It’s over. It’s done. What we’ve got to do is: I’m looking to go out and get some private donations from businesses and individuals. Peo- ple who care about the program, care about the community, care about trying to get the facilities that are as good for the kids of Victoria as we can possibly get.
Q: One of the athletic direc- tor’s duties is to set expec- tations for the program and evaluate coaches. What is your plan?
A: All athletic programs are evaluated by wins and losses. That goes without saying. I’m the new guy. I didn’t come in with any predetermined ideas or predetermined notions of where this program is as a whole. I came in simply for one reason – I love athletics, I love young people, I love coaches. And I thought, I have a lot of
gas in the tank still, a lot of energy, and maybe I can help. Now that I’m here, part of my job is to evaluate. You evaluate by wins and losses – that’s one way. Now, there are also a lot
of other contributing factors in wins and losses. If there are any deficiencies, certainly I want to help strengthen them. I want to help make them better. In this day and age, now you’ve got four teams going to the playoffs. I don’t think it’s unrealistic to ask they go to the playoffs. If they
don’t go the playoffs, is the sky falling? No. I just think that’s a legitimate goal that the pro- grams start out with.
Q: Building a program begins at the middle-school level. What action would you like to see to improve those programs?
A: I do want our coaches on the high-school level making sure there are coaches at the middle school running their offenses and defenses. That’s the only way you’re going to be success- ful. They’ve got to be getting it down at the middle school as much as possible. When they’re freed up, go down there and be a part of the middle school kids – that is certainly something we’re going to push for.
Q:You’vecoachedona number of successful teams, including a national champion team at the University of Okla- homa. What is the first step that needs to be taken to help the VISD athletic program improve?
A: What I want more than anything is for our kids to feel like they have ownership in a very nice complex. To me, the only thing people have in high school to get excited about is facilities. That’s what gets the kids excited. Kids in high school are playing for free, for the love of the game and playing because they want to play. You don’t get them excited about a bunch of rah-rah speeches. Kids get excit- ed about facilities. The better the facilities and the nicer the facilities, the more excitement
it brings to them. You put new turf in this stadium and I know the two football teams are going to be much more excited to play. They’re going to want to play in that stadium; they’re going to want to play in that gym; they’re going to want to play on the softball field or on that soccer field. We’re not where we need to be. We’re not the worst I’ve ever seen, and we’re not the best I’ve ever seen. But we could be so much better.

Bay City running back Rodney “Rj” Mitchell comes from a family of athletes.
Bay City’s Mitchell builds on family legacy
BY MIKE FORMAN
[email protected]
BAY CITY – Rodney Mitchell is the youngest member of his fam- ily, but it would be a mistake to call him the baby.
Mitchell stands 6 feet, 1 inch tall; weighs 240 pounds; and fig- ures to wreak his share of havoc for Bay City this season.
“They already know what I did last year,” Mitchell said. “I come to show out.”
Mitchell had 951 yards rush- ing and receiving combined and scored 13 touchdowns as a run- ning back last season despite missing the El Campo game with an injury. He added 54 solo tack- les when he lined up at defensive end or linebacker.
“I like to run the ball and catch the ball,” he said. “I like doing people bad, like running people over and snagging on people and having fun on the field. If you’ve got the ball, I want you to feel the pain. To get this big and to get

where I am right now, I love play- ing defense.”
Mitchell’s emergence came as no surprise to second-year Bay City coach Pat Matthews, who got a glimpse of what to expect at the school board meeting where he was hired.
“Rj stood out, and Rj usually likes to be the life of the party,” Matthews said. “He introduced himself and said, ‘I’m Rj, and I’m a running back,’ so from that moment on, Rj was Rj and has al- ways been Rj.
“Since I got out here I’ve been very impressed with his work ethic, the way he moves around, the energy that he has. But what I’m more impressed with this year is the leadership that I see out of him. He’s getting guys
there, he’s doing the right things and that’s huge.”
Mitchell comes from a family of athletes. His father, Rodney, played running back at Bay City before going on to play at North- east Oklahoma. His uncle, Ro- land, played at Bay City and Tex- as Tech and spent eight seasons in the NFL.
His mother, Mary Williams, qualified for the state track meet at Bay City, and his sisters also qualified for the state track meet. Shaniya is playing basketball at Texas Southern, and Bren’Yae is running track at the University of the Southwest.
“You have high expectations when your dad goes to college and plays football, all your sisters are fast and they go to college for a sport, and then they are looking at you,” Rj Mitchell said. “You’re the youngest, and they have high expectations for you.”
Rodney Mitchell originally want- ed his son to play wide receiver
so he wouldn’t have to take the pounding that running backs ex- perience.
But once he watched his son play youth football, Rodney Mitchell was certain running back would be Rj’s position.
“I knew he was going to be special,” Rodney Mitchell said. “I watched when he was playing youth football, junior high and now. I was a pretty good running back, and his vision is way better than mine when I was at his age.”
Matthews is aware of the Mitch- ell family’s athletic prowess and the way it drives Rj.
“I think it’s motivation,” Mat- thews said. “I think he set the bar to be either there or better. That’s a lot of shoes that you have to fill. I think he’s on the way to doing that. Like I said, his work ethic is ridiculous. The thing about Rj is making sure he continues to take care of his grades, making sure he continues to stay focused and making sure he continues
to do what he does.”
Mitchell has already received
an offer from Lamar Universi- ty, which is looking at him as a running back. But Mitchell just wants the opportunity to play college football.
“Any college that offers me,” he said, “wherever they need me to play, I’m playing.”
The Blackcats will need Mitch- ell to have a strong senior year to help them return to the playoffs.
“It’s just making plays,” Mat- thews said. “Being a big part of what we got going on. The lead- ership is a big thing. Even if you look at last year, Rj was all over the field. He was a running back, kick returner, he’s at linebacker, I mean he’s done it all, he’s punt- ing. You can’t ask for anything more except for just to take it to another level. But that leadership component and getting these guys galvanized and together and keeping that synergy going, I think he’s done a good job of that.”

Watching Bulldogs’ success through years makes wide receiver hungry
to claim his own
BY MIKE FORMAN

YOAKUM – The waiting was the hardest part for Ty Love.
Love didn’t see the field as much as he would have liked during his first two years at Yoakum.
But he understood the reason as the Bulldogs advanced to the Class 3A, Division I state final when he was a freshman and the state semifinals when he was a sophomore.
“I wasn’t really mad at the guys because they were seniors and needed to play,” Love said. “It just made me work harder. It was a little hard. I was trying to be patient because I knew once my senior year came, it was going to go by pretty fast.”
Love began to make his mark last year as a junior and will get a chance to showcase his abilities this season.
“He’s going to be our guy this year,” said Yoakum coach Bo Robinson. “He’s going to have to be able to do a lot of things, and he’s obviously a very talented guy. He’s never been asked to do what we’re going to ask him to do this year. He definitely can do it.”
The 6-foot-2, 190-pound Love will play wide receiver and in the secondary as he did last season, and he could also take snaps in Yoakum’s Wildcat package.
“When I was younger, I looked up to those guys, and they helped me become the player I am right now. So, I know what to do with it,” he said. “I’ve just got to tell everybody we’ve got to work to- gether and get along with each other. Once we do that, we’ll be playing together pretty good.”
Love is an outstanding athlete who went undefeated in the tri- ple jump last season en route to winning a gold medal at the state track and field meet. He also qualified for the state meet
EVAN LEWIS/[email protected]
Yoakum senior Ty Love had 38 receptions for 685 yards and eight touchdowns last season. He will also play in the secondary for the Bulldogs.
in the 200-meter dash.
He has football offers from
the Air Force Academy, Abilene Christian and Yale.
The offer from Yale came as a shock to Love, who has a 3.8 grade-point average.
“My parents told me to stay on my grades,” he said. “They ha- ven’t really been hard on me. I know the NFL is my dream, but it’s not a promise. I’ve got to have my education first before I think about going to the NFL.”
Robinson expects Love to get more offers as he becomes more involved on both sides of the ball.
“He hasn’t got his dream offer yet,” Robinson said, “but I think he will before it’s over with.”
Love is keeping his options open and is thankful to have the opportunity to continue playing football.
“Honestly, I don’t want to be too far from home,” he said. “But I also want to go somewhere where I can get a really good ed- ucation.”
Love is one of a few seniors returning for the Bulldogs, who come into the season ranked No. 5 in the state.
“That’s what I want to do: I want to go back to state,” Love said. “The past two years, we made it to round five and got shut down. I don’t want that to happen again.
“Everybody here knows how
to work,” he added. “They know we’re not as talented as the last couple of years, so they’re going to work harder to be better.”
Yoakum needs Love to be pro- ductive to have a successful sea- son.
“He gained a lot of confidence last year,” Robinson said. “His freshman and sophomore year, if we had the team we have this year, he would have played a bunch on that team. We had some really good guys in front of him that he had to sit and wait on. We didn’t know how tough Ty would be, and last year he really came on for us.”

“It doesn’t matter as long as they get me the ball,” he said. “I’ve thought about it (his final season at Yoakum), but I know I have an opportunity to go play college football. So, I’m just go- ing to make this last year the best and go play in college.”

Shiner, Refugio standouts identical in position, goal
BY MIKE FORMAN
[email protected]
Refugio’s Ysidro Mascorro and Shiner’s Don- yai Taylor share similar traits.
Both will start their senior year as returning all-state players, both play running back and linebacker, both have a brother playing college football and both will be team captains.
Mascorro and Taylor also share a similar goal, which is where their paths will diverge, since only one can play for a state championship.
Refugio and Shiner are no longer in the same district but remain in the same region, creating one of the state’s premier rivalries.
The teams have played only six times, but the stakes have been high in each game.
“Seventh grade is when I realized how big everything was,” Mascorro said. “It was the last game in district, and you had to beat them or you were second in district. Then, we had a chance to play them in the playoffs, so we work on them every chance we can get.”
“It’s fun to have somebody that you know you have on your schedule that is going to push you,” Taylor said. “They’re going to make you fight for it.”
Refugio came out on top in five of the meet- ings, which includes a 56-41 victory in last year’s Class 2A, Division I regional round.
The Bobcats enter this season ranked No. 1 in the state poll, while the Comanches rank No. 3.
“We’re all here,” Mascorro said. “We have re- turners. There’s a reason we’re picked No. 1, and we want to show them.”
“It’s really basically the same team,” Taylor said. “They were all on the team last year; it’s just that they didn’t start. It’s basically the same team, the same chemistry, and the chemistry is

getting better and better every day. It should be a fun year.”
Mascorro was on varsity as a freshman in 2016 when Refugio won its last state championship. He played with his brother, Trace, who began his college career at UTEP before transferring to Sam Houston State.
“I always wanted to play around with him and his whole class,” Ysidro Mascorro said. “That’s all I worked for: to be able to play with him my freshman year.”
Taylor broke his ankle as a freshman and played briefly in the playoffs with brother, Dadrian, who is playing at UTSA.
“After every game, even in Little League, we would come back home and see who had the best stats,” Donyai Taylor said. “There was al- ways a competition to see who could do better.”
The 5-foot-10, 205-pound Mascorro led the Bobcats with 164 tackles last season while rush- ing for 490 yards and seven touchdowns.
But Mascorro’s work ethic is what impresses Refugio coach Jason Herring.
“He’s a coach’s dream,” Herring said. “He does everything right. He’s the last one to leave every day and the first one to get there. He works all summer long. He lives in the weight room. He’s an incredibly dedicated athlete. But probably what impresses me the most about Sido is he’s very, very unselfish. He just does his job and does what he’s supposed to do and nev- er complains. He’s the ultimate team player.”
The 6-1, 197-pound Taylor rushed for 1,459 yards and 19 touchdowns, caught eight passes for 228 yards and four touchdowns, and notched 51 tackles and two interceptions while moving between safety and linebacker.
“He’s one of those kids who’s improved physical- ly over the years and definitely, he’s very football smart,” said Shiner coach Daniel Boedeker. “He’s very aware of things that are going on. That ex- perience has gotten him where he is today. We’re looking forward to having a good year from him, and I think he’s thinking the same thing, so we’re all excited.”
Taylor and Mascorro realize as seniors, they have a responsibility to their teammates.
“We’re definitely looking for him to be a leader for us,” Boedeker said. “He has the capability of leading. His teammates follow him and we go as he goes.”
“Very rarely has an underclassmen been elected as the captain of the team, and Sido got elected as a captain last year by his teammates,” Herring said. “We’re expecting him to be a captain this year, and we’re expecting him to run the show.”
The show debuts Friday for Shiner and Refugio, and both players are hoping their finale comes in December at AT&T Stadium in Arlington.
“It means a lot to me,” Taylor said. “I just want to end my senior year on a good note. We’re try- ing to win a championship like most of the time during my career.”
“We’re just going to do our thing, the thing we’ve been doing for years,” Mascorro said. “Anything short of getting gold at state is not acceptable.”

Flyers eye victory on horizon
BY KEVIN ALSTROM
SPECIAL TO THE ADVOCATE
Under first-year head coach Bryan Jones, St. Joseph returned to the play- offs last season for the first time since 2014. This season, Jones and the Flyers look to build upon their 2018 success and advance into the TAPPS Division II, District 5 playoffs.
The Flyers have a strong returning senior class to lean on, and Jones has been pleased with the effort the players have put in over the summer.
“They’ve been working hard for us all summer long,” he said.
The Flyers spent the summer in the weight room, conditioning and partici- pating in 7on7 tournaments.
“I don’t even feel like we got a break this summer,” Jones said.
Led by senior quarterback Jacob Bor- dovsky, the Flyers’ offense is poised to put points on the board. Bordovsky will be surrounded by senior running backs KeAon Griffin, Quincy Johnson and J’Den Miller.
Drake Hale, who transferred from Vic- toria East, is also expected to see action
in the backfield this season.
Bordovsky will have many receiving
options. Griffin, Miller, Alex Angerstein, Jacoby Robinson and Edward Clay will see action at wide receiver.
The offensive line will be anchored by senior D’Ary Patton at tackle.
Jones sees juniors Matthew Janak, Steven DeLeon and George Pena step- ping up for his team.
“Janak will be a safety and wide re- ceiver,” Jones said. “Pena and DeLeon will be on the offensive and defensive lines. They are going to have to step up for us this year.”
Houston Second Baptist remains the team to beat if a district title is to be won. Houston Lutheran South is poised to secure the second playoff spot. St. Jo- seph, which is picked to finish third by Dave Cambell’s Texas Football Maga- zine, will look to challenge those teams for the district title.
“From top to bottom, this is the most competitive district in 5A,” Jones said. “Anytime you have those Houston teams involved, it’s going to be tough.”

Karnes City is facing its second season in District 15-3A, Division I.
The Badgers weren’t able to win a district game last season, but 12-year coach Jim Wood believes his young core of players gained the necessary experience to com- pete this season.
“They had a great offseason,” Wood said. “They’re getting after it, and we have a good senior class coming. Last year was tough. They’re not happy, and we aren’t either.”
The Badgers, who finished 1-9 overall last season, will return nine players on offense and eight on defense.
Wood is looking for players such as Luke Doreck, Max Koliba and Braden Bowen to lead the team.
“They’re physically stronger this year,” Wood said. “Players have a year of experi- ence of playing varsity football. We started eight sophomores on defense, and they weren’t ready psychically.”

Woodsboro offensive coordinator James Duprie talks with his team during a practice last season. Gary Carpenter will take the reins as the Eagles’ new head coach this season.

Gary Carpenter begins his first season at Woodsboro.
Carpenter was the defensive coordina- tor at Floresville last season and spent the three previous seasons as the defensive coordinator at Henderson.
Carpenter inherits a team that lost more than half its starters to graduation.
The Eagles finished 12-1 overall last sea- son and posted a 5-0 record in District 16- 2A, Division II.
“We have hardworking kids,” Carpenter said. “We had our scrimmage last week, and they played hard. They’re a team that gives you a good effort. It’s going to be tough to replay what last year’s team did, but we do have kids who are part of that. They were a part of that success and expect to have that same success again.”
Woodsboro will look to returning starters Marcos Pena, Raul Flores, Caleb Moore,

Nixon-Smiley coach Pablo Ybarra knows last season was a rebuilding year for the Mustangs.
The Mustangs showed signs of success by staying in games, but couldn’t capitalize. “The main thing is staying healthy, stay- ing focused and playing together,” Ybarra said. “We have to finish games. We would start off really good, but we couldn’t finish a game completely. We will have to finish
games to win.”
Nixon-Smiley finished 0-10 overall and 0-5
in District 15-3A, Division II.
But Ybarra likes what he’s seen so far
during scrimmages and practices.
“I like the attitude,” Ybarra said. “The attitude is good, and we’re stronger phys- ically and faster. The main thing is staying
healthy. We can’t afford to lose anybody.” The Mustangs have nine returning start- ers and will look to players such as quar- terback Benito Perez; running back Xavier Arias; receivers Mario Ponce and Javen Mendiola; offensive linemen Mateo Abrego, Josiah Montoya and Zac Perez; and line-
backers Chris Brown and Dario Jantes.

BY TYLER TYRE

After making it to the region- al round in 2017 for the first time since 1990, Tidehaven took another step forward in 2018.
David Lucio’s squad advanced to the state quarterfinals, where it ran into District 14-3A, Divi- sion II foe and district champion East Bernard. The Tigers lost to the Brahmas 17-0 and finished the season with a record of 7-7.
Lucio wants his team to contin- ue its late-season success, but his main goal is to see improvement every week.
“We have one of the most difficult pre-district schedules in 3A, and it’s going to be a battle for us every week,” Lucio said. “But if this team stays healthy and continues to get better week to week, then I really think we can make a pretty good run again.”
Van Vleck also aims to continue last year’s success, which included making it to the regional round of playoffs. Coach Robert Blackmon’s team returns only four starters: wide receiver and defensive back Jalen Williams, wide receiver and defensive back Cameron Franklin, offensive lineman and linebacker Derek Buckalew and wide receiver Brandon Burnett.
Despite the team’s inexperience, Blackmon thinks the Leopards can make it back to the regional round.
“I think that this team can re- peat the success we had last year,” Blackmon said. “The second or third round of the playoffs is achievable for this group. I always tell these guys, once you get into the playoffs, on any given night, anyone can beat anyone. So, we just want to concentrate on taking care of district and seeing what happens after that.”
Schulenburg returned to the play- offs last year for the first time since 2013 before falling to Blanco, 28-0.
The Shorthorns return eight starters on defense and six on of- fense. Coach Brandon Brown said last year was a good stepping stone for the group.
“We have a lot of returners this year, and that really helps with the transition coming into the year,” Brown said. “We don’t need to change anything on offense or defense. This group knows what to expect, so we are hoping to hit the ground running this year and be ahead of where we were at the start of last year.”
Brown will look to his team’s ex- perience to make playoffs for the second straight year.
“We feel like we can fight for one of the top three spots in the district this year,” Brown said. “Finishing fourth last year, I think that we can move up. But it’s going to be a tough district, and we’ll have our work cut out for us.”
After a one-win season in 2018, Bloomington’s playoff drought in- creased to 20 years.
Second-year head coach Chris Horn knows the struggle his pro- gram has faced. He focuses on making his team better every day.
“The team definitely is getting tougher and stronger,” Horn said. “I think our offensive line is get- ting better, and they are doing a good job. Our quarterback has shown us some good things, and I think he can be pretty good as well. There is an adjustment peri- od with a new coach, and I think we are moving past that this year.”
Ganado also has a coach en- tering his second year in Brent Bennett. Bennett led the team to a 4-6 record in his first year with the program, but the team was unable to end a five-year playoff drought.
Bennett thinks his team will be more successful in his second year but knows it will be difficult to claim a playoff spot in the district.
“There are so many solid teams out there,” he said. “If you don’t show up ready to play on any giv- en week, this district will punish you. I really think this district is as good as there is across the state of Texas, but the good thing about that is those tough opponents have to play us as well. We are go- ing to prepare every day to make sure our kids are ready to go.”

Cuero’s closest margin of victory in a District 13-4A, Division II game last sea- son was 36 points.
The Gobblers scored at least 43 points in every district game and reached the 70-point mark twice.
But Cuero’s performance was more in- dicative of its strength than an overall weakness in the district. The Gobblers wound up playing district foe Geronimo Navarro again in the quarterfinals before winning their fourth state championship.
“I think we had some teams that were young last year, kind of like we are this year,” said Cuero coach Travis Reeve. “I fully expect the district is going to be a lot more competitive.”
Cuero and Navarro will have some re- building to do, while Wimberley returns a number of players from last year’s team, which lost in the bi-district round.
Llano advanced to the area round last season, while Bandera and Austin Eastside Memorial missed the playoffs.

BY TYLER TYRE
[email protected]
Daniel Boedeker has been with the Shiner Comanches for two decades, but this season he will step into a new role as the team’s head coach.
Through his history with the pro- gram, he knows how tough it will be for the Comanches to repeat as dis- trict champs.
“Brazos has a new coach. They have some good, quality kids back as well,” Boedeker said. “Our district is still tough. It’s going to be a battle each week, so we’re going to have to be ready.”
Shiner returns eight starters from last season: running back Donyai Taylor, tight end Cole Patek, tight end Cross Rankin, offensive lineman Gage Brooks, running back Douglas Brooks, safety Devin Lehnert, line- backer C.J. Miller and cornerback Ty- ler Palmer.
The Comanches come into the sea- son ranked No. 3 in the state in Class 2A, but Boedeker does not want his team to overlook anyone.
“You have to make sure you play week to week,” Boedeker said. “You can’t overlook anybody. You have to be prepared, and that’s one of those things you have to talk about for the kids to focus on that week’s opponent.”
Yorktown made the playoffs last season and will return many players such as defensive end and tight end Corey Pargmann, running back and linebacker Zachary Latta and wide re- ceiver and linebacker Justin Denson.
With so much experience on the roster, fourth-year head coach John David Caffey thinks his team has a chance to make an even deeper run.
“Getting this team into the playoffs last year was an accomplishment,” Caffey said. “We’re still a young team. So, to be able to get those guys playoff experience last year is key to their de- velopment in getting this team where we want it to be.”
Weimar saw success last year, mak- ing it to the area round in head coach Ryan McIver’s first season with the team.
McIver hopes his second year will be as bright but knows it is a tough de- mand in a competitive district.
“This is a tough district,” he said. “Shiner is always at the top, and they have some of the best skill kids that they have had there in a long time. Brazos is a tough team as well, and they always are difficult to beat. But
Shiner goes over multiple drills during practice. The Comanches are ranked No. 3 in the Class 2A preseason poll.

Alvarez knows improving the Lions will take time, but he understands building a winning program is a pro- cess.

This isn’t something that is going to be built in a day or a month, but our goal is to have these these kids leave the field a bet- ter football player and a better athlete each day.”

Refugio outscored its District 16-2A, Division I opponents by a combined score of 337-7 last season.
The Bobcats scored at least 55 points in each game and twice scored 75 points or more.
The results weren’t exactly unex- pected after the UIL moved Refugio south from its previous district.
“I think you learn something all the time,” said Refugio coach Jason Herring. “It had been a while. We had been north all these years with Shiner and Weimar and those guys. If you’ve got Shiner in your district and you’re both in the top three, it’s a dif- ferent animal week in and week out.”
The Bobcats, who were ranked No. 1 in the state preseason poll, will play three teams ranked in the top 10 of their respective classifications before entering district play against Riviera, Freer, Santa Maria, Ben Bolt and Three Rivers.
Refugio returns a number of start- ers including quarterback Austin Ochoa; running back Naaji Gads- den; fullback Jaden Hubbard; tight end Jarren Gonzales; wide receiver Michael Firova; offensive linemen Thomas Keyes, Corbin Brown, Dev- on Flores, Elias Morris and Dareon Wills; linebacker Ysidro Mascorro and free safety Jordan Kelley.
“It’s a little bit harder because the level of competition isn’t what it is go- ing to be. So, you’ve got to take things in stride,” Herring said. “We’ve got a process and we’ve got a formula that we follow.”
Herring’s biggest concern is mak- ing sure the Bobcats continue to improve so they’re ready for the play- offs.
“Our day-to-day operations are the same,” he said. “The biggest thing is keeping the kids in tune to where they’re mentally improving every day. If you’re not improving, some- where in the state, someone is get- ting better every single day. They might be in a better district where they’re getting better, and if you don’t watch, by Week 13, they’ve got you before you even know it.”

Rivalry persists
through century
BY MIKE FORMAN
[email protected]
El Campo and Bay City will play for the 100th consecutive year when the teams meet in the state’s oldest continuous rivalry Nov. 1.
A fourth-place playoff berth was on the line when the Ricebirds and Blackcats met for the 115th time overall last season.
The teams hope the stakes are higher this season in the final District 13-4A, Division I game for Bay City and next-to-last district con- test for El Campo.
The key to the Ricebirds and Blackcats being in contention will rest in their ability to play at a high level for all four quarters.
“It comes down to the consistency and finish- ing,” said El Campo coach Wayne Condra. “I think that was one of the things in a lot of the games we were in last year: We had opportuni- ties; we just didn’t convert.”
“It’s a chemistry thing when it comes to win- ning,” added second-year Bay City coach Pat Matthews. “That process of winning and also transitioning into a new offensive scheme and defensive scheme and getting them to contin- ue to buy in throughout the game for 48 min- utes. We had to learn those lessons. We had to finish and finish strong.”
Sealy went undefeated in district and returns a number of starters from a team that lost to state finalist Liberty Hill in the regional round.
Needville and Brazosport also reached the postseason, while Columbia tied Bay City for fourth place, and Fulshear figures to improve in its second season of varsity play.
“All the teams have talent coming back,” Condra said. “It’s going to be very competi- tive. Sealy had two good classes and has a lot of guys back. They have some good skill kids. They’re still very talented.”
“You know each team has improved and you know each team has some people move on and some losses in some area,” Matthews said. “I think it’s anybody’s ballgame. It’s kind of like an unknown. Sealy is the favorite. I think anybody has an opportunity to be 2-3-4 very easily.”

lofty expectations

Falls City’s closet margin of victory in a District 15-2A, Divi- sion II game last season was 39 points.
The Beavers ran through La Pryor, Runge, Charlotte, D’Hanis and Pettus with ease en route to the state semifinals.
Falls City may not be as explo- sive as it was last season, but it still has the opportunity to re- peat last year’s success.
“We will be a little bit differ- ent,” said Falls City coach Britt Hart. “We won’t be as dynamic as we were the last couple of years. Those guys who we have up front are big, big guys, and we average about 6 foot, 260 on that offensive line. We’re going to use them.”
Falls City will open district against La Pryor, which re- turns most of its starters, be- fore squaring off against Karnes County rival Runge.
The Yellowjackets made the playoffs in coach Abe Vargas’ first season.
“This summer was big for our kids,” Vargas said. “We had a lot of kids show up. They under- stand expectations, and we’re making a lot of progress.”
The Beavers aim for another long playoff run, but they under- stand district comes first.

Flatonia had a roller coaster 2018 season.
The team started out hot, winning its first two games before losing four in a row. The Bulldogs then reeled off wins in two of their next three games to make the playoffs.
“We know that our district is a gauntlet,” said Chris Frey- tag, who enters his 10th sea- son as head coach. “Burton and Snook are really good, and
Sommerville and Louise are formidable opponents also. But this group understands what we did last year, and even though we went two rounds, it was a disappointment. This year, our goal is to get past the second round and see how far we can go.”
Freytag will look to returning running backs Dakory Willis and Chris Johnston, quarter- back Juan Netro, offensive lineman Cameron Becker and linebacker Erek Herrera to
lead his team.
Flatonia lost to Woodsboro in
the Class 2A area round.
While the team has lost some players, it still has big goals for
the season.
“When we get to district, our
goal this year is to win a dis- trict championship,” Freytag said. “I believe that this team has what it takes. We need to set ourselves up through non- district and prepare our team

Edna, Goliad, Yoakum target playoff rematch
So is our defensive line, and that’s going to really help us.”
Hallettsville missed the playoffs last year and is still dealing with a lack of depth, although its numbers have im- proved.
“We’re just going to have to prove our- selves, basically,” Psencik said. “It’s go- ing to come down to whether our kids are willing to sacrifice individually and as a team. A big key for us is going to be how physical we get as a team. It’s going to also be determined by how many of our players can give relief to our starters be- cause we’ll have seven or eight going both ways.”
The teams advancing to the playoffs will likely face district rematches in the third and fourth rounds.
“We probably will. We probably will,” Robinson said. “That’s probably why we’ve played so deep the last few years. We’ve been in a tough district the last three years. You play good people ear- ly on in the season, and that makes you better. That gets you ready for long playoff runs.”
BY MIKE FORMAN

District 14-3A, Division I lived up to its billing last season.
Edna, Goliad and Yoakum tied for the championship and played each other in the playoffs before the Bulldogs advanced to the state semifinals for the third con- secutive season.
“I don’t care what anybody else says, this district is the toughest in the state,” said Robert Draper, who moved from offensive coordinator to head coach at Edna. “Luling is doing a good job try- ing to get their program back up, Coach (Tommy) Psencik at Hallettsville does a good job, Industrial will be better and of course, you have the three at the top with Goliad, Yoakum and us. Every week is go- ing to be a battle.”
Goliad coach Bobby Nicholson wouldn’t be surprised if the playoff seeds aren’t de- cided until the final week like they were last season.

for the district schedule. If we do that, I think we can win the district cham- pionship.”
Louise advanced to the bi-district round of the playoffs, but with the loss of a number of starters, a young core and a new head coach, it might be a rebuilding year for the Hornets.
“It’s going to be tough,” said head coach Joe Bill. “We lost our entire backfield and receiving core. That has forced us to shift gears on the kind of offense we are going to run. There is lots of inexperience in those positions, and we are going to be young and re- building. But at the same time, we’re going to try to get after everyone and make another run at the playoffs.”
Louise comes off a year in which it went 1-3 in district.
“This district is going to be very competitive,” Bill said. “I think Fla- tonia, Burton and Snook will be the top three, but it will be a good battle between us and Sommerville for that fourth spot.”
“This district is going to be tough,” Nicholson said. “It’s going to be up in the air, and everybody last year was se- nior-heavy. Edna lost Kenny Haynes, Yoa- kum lost skilled kids, but they have a lot of good athletes coming back from the JV. It’s a power football district.”
Yoakum, Edna and Goliad must replace starters, who played important roles.
“Overall, the district is probably not go- ing to be as talented as it has been the last few years,” said Yoakum coach Bo Rob- inson. “It’s going to be very competitive. I don’t know what those guys have got. I know we all lost a lot of good players.”
Industrial claimed the fourth-place playoff berth last season and has the larg- est group of starters returning.
“We played a lot of youngsters last year, and we do return quite a bit. We do return some at some key spots that are going to help us,” said second-year Industrial coach Jamie Dixon. “Our offensive line is a year older, and they’re doing a great job.

“It’s not a rebuilding year for the
program, but we do have a huge battle ahead of us,” Waldie said. “A brand-new offense, brand-new de- fense, new coaches, new names and three guys back who have started a Friday night football game. We built something in a short amount of time that I’m proud of from a culture and relationship standpoint.”

into a 1-9 program and were able to lead them to back-to-back district championships.”
The Apaches advanced to the Class 4A area round after posting a 6-6 re- cord.
The Trojans finished 7-4 but were eliminated in the bi-district round.
Gonzales will look to returning start- ers Desmond Bolden, Nico Anzaldua, Arbreyon Dora, Lion Williamson, Di- ego Diaz Deleon and Heath Henke.
The Trojans will welcome back quarterback Seth Gomez, who battled injuries last season.
“He’s probably one of the best quar- terbacks I’ve had the pleasure of coaching,” Soza said. “He’s a big kid and a strong kid who can help us open this offense. He will be huge.”
Beeville returns 17 starters on of- fense and defense.
“This is our seniors’ last go-round, and they want to take the district championship,” Soza said. “Our goal is to make the playoffs, and anything can happen after that.”

Wharton came into last season attempt- ing to end its drought of 15 years without a district championship.
They did just that, going 5-0 in district and outscoring their District 11-4A, Divi- sion II foes by a combined 139 points.
But this year, Wharton head coach Chad Butler expects stiffer competition in the district.
“I feel like this district is going to be very competitive,” Butler said. “Sweeny is going to be a good team, and I think La Marque will be a much better team than last year.”
Wharton quarterback Donovan Krushall returns for his senior season after throw- ing for 2,391 yards and 28 touchdowns.
Other key returners for the Tigers include wide receiver Joerell Davis, offensive line- man JaQuarian Hopkins and linebackers Jashawn Nickersona and Keilonn Allen.
“It’s great to have an experienced team like this one,” Butler said. “These older guys understand that not everything is going to go perfect but if you keep work- ing hard, you can work your way out of it.

Palacios, Rice Consolidated raise expectations

Palacios and Rice Consolidat- ed started last season with new head coaches.
A year later, both teams carry high expectations after making the playoffs.
Palacios reached the bi-dis- trict round in 2018, breaking an 11-year playoff drought, before losing to Edna, 61-21.
“It was huge for us to get to the playoffs last year and break that streak,” said coach Chad
Graves. “It was a great step in our first year, but we aren’t go- ing to sneak under the radar this year. We have a target on our back this year. The message this spring, and our goal, is to find a way to play in that 11th ballgame.”
Key returners for Palacios include wide receiver and cor- nerback Camron Polk, wide re- ceiver Xzavier Haynes, running back Gary Haynes and lineback- er Daniel Gonzales.
But there are new faces for the
Sharks as well. The team will put a freshman under center this year in Anthony White.
“Having Camron, Xzavier and Gary really will help White this year as a freshman,” said Graves. “Those players have taken a load off of his plate. I re- iterate every time I see him, ‘I’m not asking you to lead this team, I’m asking you to get the ball to where it needs to be.’ So, to have those guys around him to settle him down is going to be huge.”
Rice Consolidated made it
two rounds into the playoffs be- fore falling to Edna in the area round.
“Obviously, when we lost to Edna, it was a discouraging feel- ing,” said coach Jared Sloan. “But when we had time to look back a couple months later, we appreciated it much more. Hav- ing that experience will be great for this group.”
Rice brings back three offensive and defensive linemen in Dray- ton Canaris, Taj Field and Chris- tian Tovar, as well as five other
starters on offense and defense. Sloan thinks they will face a
tough task.
“Our district is very compet-
itive this year,” he said. “There are some great teams in Colum- bus and Hitchcock, as well as Boling and Palacios. All of those teams are coached by great coaches who do a great job with their kids. There isn’t a week off in this district, and there isn’t a weak link. It’s going to be a battle to get to the playoffs and make a run.”

SPECIAL TO THE ADVOCATE
Coming off a state champion- ship, Shiner St. Paul looks to de- fend its crown in a challenging TAPPS Division IV, District III district that includes Hallettsville Sacred Heart.
“We have some returners. We have a lot of youth this year,”
said St. Paul head coach Jake Wachsmuth. “We return some guys who played well in the back- field for us last year.”
“Historically, it’s us and Sacred Heart that play it out for the dis- trict title,” Wachsmuth added. “However, St. Gerard has a new coach who will make an impact for them.”
Temple Central Texas Chris- tian will also present a challenge. St. Paul will rely on running backs Noah Boedeker and Car- son Reese. Guy Giese will be un-
der center for the Cardinals. Sacred Heart, which defeated St. Paul in the regular season but fell short to the Cardinals in the playoffs, will be led by first-year
head coach Manny Freeland. “We will run an air raid, spread
offense,” Freeland said. Freeland sees his offensive line
as the key for his team.
“We have one of the best lines
in the state at our level,” he said. “St. Paul has the district title, so they are the team to beat.”
They clash Nov. 1 in Hallettsville.

Cougars boast speed
BY KEVIN ALSTROM
SPECIAL TO THE ADVOCATE
Faith Academy is entering its fourth year of six-man football this season.
“Our eighth-graders from four years ago are now juniors. If we stay healthy, we will have a successful season,” said Faith Academy coach Gil Gonzalez III.
The goal for the Cougars this year is a playoff berth. In order to accom- plish that, they must navigate in what
Gonzalez considers the best district in TAPPS Division II. Leading the way for the Cougars this season will be Isaiah Gonza- lez Jr., Jared Hunnicutt and Josh Long.
“Six-man is nothing but speed,” Gonza- les said. “It’s my fastest guys against your fastest.”
The Cougars’ district consists of Bul- verde Bracken, New Braunfels Christian, Waco Live Oak, Kerrville Our Lady of the Hills and Temple Holy Trinity.
