EDITOR’S NOTE
A season unlike any other
Our world has changed dramatically since Refugio wrapped up the 2019 sea- son with a 28-7 victory over Post to claim the Class 2A, Division I state champion- ship.
As we left AT&T Stadium in Arlington on that chilly December night, we had no idea what the future held.
The COVID-19 pandemic forced the UIL to shut down athletics in March, and the 2020 football season was in doubt un- til the UIL gave the go ahead in July.
Teams in Classes 4A and below are al- lowed to play their first games this week- end, while Classes 5A and 6A are allowed
to start the season Sept. 24-25. TAPPS teams will follow the guidelines for Class 5A and 6A
schools.

Titans happy to be back on the field
BY REY CASTILLO
[email protected]
Victoria East has experienced an offseason like never before.
Spring sports were suspended in March because of COVID-19, and the chances of playing football be- came questionable.
But the Titans were able to be- gin summer strength and condi- tioning workouts in June and after another suspension, began work- ing out again Monday.
The UIL moved the start of the year for Class 5A and 6A to Sep- tember because of the pandemic.
“All I can tell you is God willing, it looks like we’re going to have a season,” said East coach Roland Gonzalez. “We’re taking it day-by- day, phase-by-phase and trying to get to the next step.”
If all goes as planned, the Titans will be on the field to the open the season Sept. 25 against Flores- ville.
“Our guys have tried to pull something positive out of every- thing,” Gonzalez said. “Not being able to play has really made our guys hungry to get back to some sort of normalcy.”
The Titans have a majority of players returning from last sea- son’s team, which finished 5-5 overall and 5-3 in district play.
East returns 13 starters in Trent Zappe, Ethan Farias, Da- vid Lopez, Hunter Crump, An- gel Segura, Latavian Johnson, Alan Jimenez, Terrance Terrell, Evan Brown, Tyrese Jones, Josh- ua Cuellar, Jhoedy Punch and

James Jones.
The Titans also added new offen-
sive and defensive coordinators. Doug Kent was named defensive coordinator in June after spend- ing last season at Dublin High School, where he was the defen- sive coordinator, track and power-
lifting coach.
Luke Walters was promoted to
offensive coordinator during the offseason after coaching the re- ceivers last season.
“We’re really blessed in the staff we have been able to put togeth- er,” Gonzalez said. “We lost some key guys, but we brought in some great individuals with great expe- rience.”
The team learned in February that it was returning south to re- main with the Corpus Christi area schools.
The Titans rejoined Corpus Christi Carroll, Flour Bluff, Veter- ans Memorial, King, Moody, Ray andGregory-Portland.
“It’s a very competitive district,” Gonzalez said. “Based on the situation we’re all dealing with, some more than others, our big- gest obstacle right now is that we can start preparing for the field of competition.”
The Titans are hoping to make it back to the postseason for the first time since 2018.
The team saw good things from Jimenez, who rushed for 1,087 yards and 17 touchdowns last sea- son.
Quarterback Latavian Johnson, who split time at the position, was

another asset to the team’s of- fense after passing for 781 yards and seven touchdowns.
East will also rely on receiv- ers Terrell, Brown and Caden Mozisek.
Farias, Zappe and Punch will look to anchor the defense, while Crump, Segura, Cuellar and Lo- pez will hold down the line.
“One thing I can tell you is how well our kids have handled every- thing and how excited they are to get rolling,” Walters said. “I have no doubt that we will get to the ground running, and get back

up to speed. It’s been one thing after another with these guys getting shut down in March and then July. But one thing our kids have showed is that they don’t get down.”
The Titans open district play Oct. 1 against Corpus Christi Car- roll at Buccaneer Stadium.
East will see new district oppo- nent Gregory-Portland in Week 2.
“Gregory-Portland — they’re tough guys,” Gonzalez said. “They’re well coached, and it’s going to be a good test. It will give us a good indication of how we’’re

going to do in this district.”
Other key dates for the Titans will be Oct. 9 when they play dis- trict champion Corpus Christi Vet- erans Memorial at home and Oct. 23 when East takes on crosstown
rival Victoria West.
“This whole deal has really made
it important to our guys — espe- cially our seniors knowing a lot of them have played their whole ca- reers waiting to be a senior,” Gon- zalez said. “I really think it means a lot to them, and we’re going to do our best to fulfill those dreams for them.”

Warriors ready for more success
BY TYLER TYRE
[email protected]
“No shortcuts... let’s work.”
That is the motto of Victoria West foot- ball this year, and the approach every player is taking this season.
The sentiment is important because the Warriors have key players to replace.
Victoria city rushing record holder running back Tyvon Hardrick, quarter- back Donovan Harris and leading tackler Bryce Sitka graduated last year.
But with those players gone, comes more opportunities for younger players, and the Warriors still have a wealth of experience, returning seven starters on offense and eight on defense.
“We have some guys coming back that have quite a bit of experience, including some with three years,” said West head coach Courtney Boyce. “I think that this senior class is a pretty close knit group. It’s shown with how resilient they’ve been with everything they’ve gone through this year, and it’s amazing how close they are and the experience they bring.”
The Warriors come off a season where they went 7-5 and 6-2 in District 15-5A, Di- vision I, their district again this season.
Boyce expects his team to be competi- tive in district again this season, and the team is very familiar with most of its foes, with the only newcomer being Grego- ry-Portland.
“We have a lot of respect for everybody we’re playing,” Boyce said. “We’re going to have to play with great focus every week and there’s a lot of tough teams in this district. A big reason we scheduled Boerne Champion Week 1 is to make sure

we’re ready for our district and Flour Bluff in our first district game.”
There will be a quarterback battle when practice resumes. It was expected to take place in the spring and summer, but with the COVID-19 pandemic things were put on hold.
“It’s going to be an open competition, Boyce said. “Blake Buzzell and Bren- don Solis have both gotten some time with the starters and then there’s some younger guys and La’Trell Barfield has played some quarterback as well. Blake and Brendon did some really good things taking care of the football and moving the chains over the summer, and we’ll just have to see how they all look with pads on.”
Key returners include Barfield, Buzzell, Chase Patek, Colten Matus, Jody Ybarra, Johnny Martinez, Sammy Brito, Beau Sci- ba and Jose Aguilar.
Boyce expects newcomers to contribute as well. Two players to watch are wide re- ceiver D’andre Fillmore and nose tackle Kievan Myles.
Boyce is confident this season’s team can takes to repeat last year’s success and is excited for them to be able to get back on the field.
“This group understands that we have to come with intensity and excitement ev- eryday and they’ve continued to build and not take any shortcuts,” Boyce said. “You have to find a way to continue to be explo- sive offensively and make good plays, get takeaways on defense and make plays on special teams. If we put in the work and have that focus on all three phases, we can accomplish a lot.”

Brooks brothers
improve Shiner’s

Brothers, Doug, left, and Dalton Brooks return for No. 1 Shiner.

SHINER – The brotherly bond be- tween Doug and Dalton Brooks is unmistakable.
But the physical differences be- tween Douglas Brooks’ and Lashaun Barnett’s sons are impossible not to notice.
Doug, a 6-foot, 275-pound junior, started for Shiner as a freshman and plays fullback and on the defensive line.
Dalton, a 6-2, 175-pound sopho- more, started as a freshman and will split time at running back and re- ceiver while also playing safety.
“My dad said growing up, I always got two bottles and he got one,” Doug opined. “That’s what they said.”
“It’s the two bottles,” Dalton agreed. “I think that’s why.”
Their size difference aside, the Brooks brothers are one of the rea- sons why the Comanches enter the season ranked No. 1 in the Class 2A, Division I state poll and are ex- pected to make a run at a third state championship.
“They’re both the total package,” said Shiner coach Daniel Boedeker. “They both run really well, they’re both physical kids, and they’re both very intelligent football players.”
The brothers have played football together since a young age, and both had the drive to excel in the sport.
“We always competed with each other,” Dalton said. “That’s what made us better and better. We want-

Doug’s experience has allowed him to step into a leadership role on a senior-laden team.
“As I get older, the game grows,” he said. “It starts to change and the more I go everything gets faster. I learn how to become a man and ev- erything else with the game of foot- ball.”
Doug has continued to get bigger and stronger during his Shiner ca- reer. He enjoys playing fullback, but his first love is defense.
He recently picked up his first college offer from the University of Houston, which is recruiting him as a defensive lineman.
“It doesn’t matter where I play,” Doug said. “But if I’m at tackle or nose, I get to do whatever I want ba- sically.”
Dalton will play a bigger role at running back this season after

Shiner begins the season ranked No. 1 and Ganado is No. 8 in the Class 2A, Division I state poll.
The Comanches and Indians are coming off successful campaigns, which included trips to the regional round and state quarterfinals, respectively.
But if either team wants to repeat last sea- son’s accomplishments, they’ll have to over- come Flatonia, Weimar and Schulenburg in District 13-2A, Division I.
All five teams in the district are coming off playoff appearances.
“We knew from the moment realignment came out that we were going to have our hands full in district,” said Shiner coach Dan- iel Boedeker. “It’s one of those things that you have to prepare well each week. The kids can’t take anybody for granted.”
Boedeker and the Comanches return six starters on offense and seven on defense.
Running back Doug Brooks, who rushed for 836 yards and 13 touchdowns last season, returns alongside his brother Dalton Brooks, Zane Rhodes and quarterback Tyler Palmer.
Brock Sestak, A.J. Patek, Max Machacek, Garrett Cowan, Colter Darilek, Christian Wagner, Trevor Haynes and Michael Williams are other key pieces for the Comanches.

“Last year was pretty fun,” Dalton said. “I bonded with the seniors we had very well. I went everywhere with them and did a lot of good things. I just got better and better over time.”
Doug doesn’t need to be reminded about Shiner’s regional playoff loss to Mason in 2018, and neither brother has forgotten last season’s heartbreaking loss to Refugio
Shiner’s offense was fueled by its running game — a big reason why the team found itself in a memorable regional round game against state champion Refugio.
“There are great athletes in our district and there are great coaches in our district,” Boedeker said. “It’s going to make it fun for Friday nights for everybody involved.”
The Indians saw a lot of promise from quar- terback Kyle Bures-Guerrero.

“They’re both special in their own ways,” Boedeker said. “It’s a great 1-2 punch in ways we can utilize them. Doug is really physical with good speed, and Dalton is an explosive playmaker. It’s a lot of fun being able to create things for them.”

Hallettsville running back continues to improve
BY MIKE FORMAN
[email protected]
HALLETTSVILLE – Jonathon Brooks became one of the premier running backs in the state during his junior season.
But Brooks insists there were no secrets to his success.
“I just look for holes,” Brooks said. “Once I see one, I just go for it.”
Brooks’ philosophy paid off for 2,144 rush- ing yards and 38 touchdowns last season.
In the process, he helped lead Halletts- ville to an 11-3 record, a Class 3A, Division I quarterfinal appearance, was selected as a Built Ford Tough Player of the Week, earned all-state honors, and made a com- mitment to play at the University of Texas.
“It’s just something that came,” Brooks said. “I really had good linemen last year and I was able to see what I could do.”
Hallettsville coach Tommy Psencik had an idea that Brooks would get the opportu- nity to play at the next level after watching him in junior high.
“When he was a freshman, I kind of knew that he had some special talents coming out of junior high,” Psencik said. “I just knew that if he grew like he did that he would have a chance to play. I knew he’d have a chance to play D-I somewhere. He actual- ly took the next step and played at a level where the big dogs were looking at him.”
Brooks played on offense, defense, re- turned kicks and punted for the Brahmas, who bounced back from a 3-7 season in 2018.
“My sophomore year, we had a pretty bad year and I didn’t think I could go to the next level,” he said. “Then, this last year, I guess I really proved a lot.”
The 6-foot-1 Brooks has gotten bigger and stronger and will play this season at around 195 pounds, up nearly 15 pounds from last season.
DUY VU/[email protected]
Senior running back Jonathon Brooks of Hallettsville continues to work on his skills as he emerged as a team leader.
“He has gained weight and he’s gained a lot of strength,” Psencik said. “One of his biggest improvements has been in the squat as far as lifting weights. His leg strength has really improved as far as range of motion.”
But Psencik has been more impressed by the responsibility Brooks has taken on with his teammates.
“The biggest change in Jonathon has been his maturity, his work habits and his
leadership skills,” Psencik said. “That’s where I’m seeing the biggest changes in him over the last two years.”
Brooks announced his commitment to Texas in May and his done his best not to let the COVID-19 pandemic interfere with his preparation for this season.
“I’m just busting my tail every day so if we do get a season, I’ll be in shape and ready to play,” he said. “I’m just following every protocol.”
Brooks, who recently turned 17, plans to sign with the Longhorns in December and hopes to graduate early so he can enroll at Texas in the spring.
The pandemic has kept Brooks from tak- ing his official visit to Austin. But he has kept in touch with the coaches and intends to follow their advice in his senior season.
“They just told me to keep doing what I’m doing,” he said. “I need to put a lot more muscle on and start eating right.”

El Campo backs ready to make a run

El Campo running backs Rueben Owens (4) Charles Shorter (8) and Johntre Davis combined to rush for 3,662 yards last season.

EL CAMPO – Opposing defenses had a hard time stopping El Campo’s trio of run- ning backs last season.
Johntre Davis, Charles Shorter and Rue- ben Owens combined to rush for 3,662 yards and 45 touchdowns, as the Rice- birds advanced to the Class 4A, Division I regional playoffs and finished with a 10-3 record.
The task could get even harder this sea- son as Shorter, a senior, Davis, a junior, and Owens, a sophomore, could be on the field at the same time.
“We want get a situation where we put all three guys out there,” said El Cam- po coach Wayne Condra. “We’re going to try to keep the defense guessing on what we’re going to do.”
The Ricebirds are more than likely go- ing to get the ball into one of their running backs’ hands.
All three have their own running style, but they all have the ability to score on any play.
“These guys work well together,” Con- dra said. “All three are unselfish. It’s one of those things where each one of them brings something different to the table. That’s the great thing about it. All three of them are very special young men and it’s one of those things where they all work well together.”
The 5-foot-10, 190-pound Davis led the Ricebirds in rushing from his fullback po- sition with 1,732 yards and 26 touchdowns.
“It feels good playing with these guys,” Davis said. “It feels better not knowing which one of us is going to get the ball. I

know how they play and they know how I play. We know each other and we know what we’ve got to do.”
The 5-10, 160-pound Shorter rushed for 1,141 yards and 15 touchdowns.
“It’s actually great playing with these guys,” Shorter said. “They’re like brothers and we’re all family so we all work hard to- gether and get things done.”
The 5-11, 185-pound Owens ran for 789 yards and four touchdowns last season, de- spite missing El Campo’s final two games.
He has already drawn a number of Divi- sion I offers and is ranked at or near the top of running back prospects in his grade class on many recruiting sites.
“It’s good playing with these guys,” Ow- ens said. “We all run the ball hard and we all can go score. Over the summer, I worked hard. I feel like I improved way more so it’s not going to easy to bring me down this year.”
The three running backs also play de- fense, which gives Condra options on when to give them a break.
“I think there are situations on the depth end of it where we’re going to have the ca- pability of subbing some guys in and out,” he said. “That’s going to help out this year.”
The key to El Campo making a deeper playoff run this season is likely to be the progress of the offensive line, which re- turns two starters.
But blocking for Shorter, Davis and Ow- ens should make the line’s task easier.

Sandcrabs look to continue past success
BY REY CASTILLO
[email protected]
It isn’t clear whether Calhoun will open the 2020 season as scheduled, but it is certain that the Sandcrabs will be in a position to compete for another district championship.
Calhoun, which returns eight starters from last season, planned on playing a scrimmage against Columbia and a Week 1 game against Navarro.
But both schools were affected by the COVID-19 pandemic — forcing the Sand- crabs to begin their search for new oppo- nents.
“Our kids are eager to be on the field to- gether and be together,” said Calhoun coach Richard Whitaker. “They’re tired of hitting each other so hopefully we can find someone to play.”
Calhoun is coming off a successful 2019 campaign. The Sandcrabs captured their first district championship since 2012 with a 17-6 win over Corpus Christi Calallen.
The team put together a 10-3 record and advanced to the Class 5A, Division II area round.
The Sandcrabs, who are ranked No. 5 in the Class 4A, Division I state poll, will look to the return of a successful backfield in Steve Johnson, Sean Flores and Jarius Stewart.
Other key players for the Sandcrabs will be Aaron Zapata, Damian Chavez, Danny Gar- cia, Adrian Chambers and Jacob Laughlin.
Johnson, who set Calhoun’s career rushing record during his junior season, rushed for 2,298 yards and 30 touchdowns.
“We have a great core of kids coming back with three starters in our secondary,” Whita- ker said. “In our backfield, there’s Steve Johnson, Sean Flores and Jarius Stewart. We feel good about this group. Our kids have been in a lot of games and lot of matchups. We like our chances if we can get some snaps and get some playing time.”
DUY VU/[email protected]
Calhoun players try to take down running back Steve Johnson during strength and conditioning workouts in Port Lavaca.
Calhoun’s biggest change during the off- season was moving Stewart into the quarter- back position with the departure of Conner Kestler.
The Sandcrabs will also be without line- backer Cade Kveton, who was an anchor for the team’s defense.
But Whitaker, who is preparing for his 16th season at Calhoun, is confident his players will have success filling each role.
“Jarius is a great football player — no mat- ter where you put him,” Whitaker said. “I re- member when we put him in the heat of bat- tle against Calallen, and it was a close game. He’s a good young man and works hard. We lost a good quarterback, but we gained an- other one in him.”
It’s unlikely Calhoun will play in Week 1, but the Sandcrabs can count on starting District 15-4A, Division I play Oct. 9 against Beeville.
The Sandcrabs will also see action against Alice, Calallen, Tuloso-Midway and Corpus Christi Miller in the newly-aligned district.
Calhoun has continued to do its part by staying ready through strength and condi- tioning workouts and team scrimmages.
“It hurts my heart that they haven’t been able to play,” Whitaker said. “Our kids are hungry, excited and they want an opportunity to continue playing.”

New challenges, same goal for Refugio
BY MIKE FORMAN

Refugio is no stranger to success or adver- sity.
Refugio played only two home games when Hurricane Harvey ripped through the town in 2017, but advanced to the state final.
The Bobcats won the state championship last season, but will play all its games on the road this season because of structural dam- age at Jack Sportsman Bobcat Stadium.
The Bobcats will also have to deal with the COVID-19 pandemic, which has forced Dis- trict 15-2A, Division I to leave possible make- up dates in its schedule.
“It’s kind of hard to see how it’s going to play out,” said Refugio coach Jason Her- ring. “We just did that with the open dates to make certain we’ll get our games in and have a true district representative.”
Bloomington dropped from Class 3A, Di- vision II and into the district, which also in- cludes Kenedy, Three Rivers and Freer.
“A lot of it is just being able to handle ad- versity and being flexible with stuff,” said Bloomington coach Chris Horn, whose team

The Bulldogs will look to running back
Chris Johntson to lead a young core of play- ers. Johntson rushed for over 1,000 yards last season.
Flatonia expects to see good things from an experienced offensive line in Reese Ramirez, Braylon Burton, Josh Ramirez and Dalton Otto.
“You look at the district and it’s one of the best in the state,” said Flatonia coach Chris Freytag. “Our kids are confident and they respect all of the programs in our district. They know we have to play above and beyond and be competitive against the teams we will face. But we aren’t going to back down and we expect to compete well.”

Kenedy had to shut down practice for near- ly two weeks after a positive coronavirus test, but the Lions seek their second straight playoff berth under Coach Shawn Alvarez, who took over last season.
“We’ve got a lot of kids returning,” Alvarez said. “We don’t have a lot of seniors, but the ones we have are critical parts. We have a really big junior class and we have four or five sophomores who are going to play. They’ve been through a year with us. They were young and we were able mold them a little bit and get their brains clicking the right way.”

Twins Joey and Jose Ramirez return to lead Weimar’s offense. Both combined for over 1,500 yards of total offense a season ago.
Other key players for Weimar will be Reed Purdy, Nunu Wilson, Jagger Fishbeck, Trey Daniels and Hunter Price.
Schulenbrug will look to first-year coach Walt Brock and the return of 18 players — in- cluding five starters on offense and eight on defense.
The Shorthorns, who dropped from Class 3A, Division II, are led by quarterback Brett Janecek, lineman Nathan Ricicar and two- way players Jeramiah Houston and Kenny King.
Schulenburg also features an experienced offensive and defensive line.

St. Joseph begins season with new coach
BY KEVIN ALSTROM
SPECIAL TO THE ADVOCATE
A new coach will be patrolling the side- lines when St. Joseph begins the season.
The Flyers hope to continue the success they’ve enjoyed the last two seasons.
They come off back-to-back playoff ap- pearances and advanced to the second round last season.
As of Aug. 21, first-year head coach James Duprie has seen his players a total of four times. The team has been meeting through Zoom, as the players have been training individually.
“At this point the kids have been work- ing out on their own,” Duprie said.
St. Joseph will begin full workouts Sept. 7. The Flyers will scrimmage Corpus Christi St. John Paul II on Sept. 17th. Their modified schedule is set to begin Sept. 25th as they host Hallettsville Sa- cred Heart in Bloomington. The Flyers are set to play a seven-game season this year.
St. Joseph graduated a large senior class last year, and this year their senior class will be the smallest. They will need to rely on younger players to fill in the po- sitions lost to graduation.
“We’re going to be young. We will prob- ably have a lot of sophomores and juniors on varsity,” Duprie said.
The Flyers are looking for a new quar- terback this season. There will be a three- way competition between junior Jackson Stefka, sophomore Carter Nelson, and ju- nior Jordan Thibodaux, who is a transfer from Cuero.

New district, same approach for Calhoun, Beeville
BY REY CASTILLO
[email protected]
Calhoun and Beeville will play in a new district this season, but that won’t change either team’s ap- proach.
Realignment shifted the Sandcrabs and Trojans to District 15-4A, Divi- sion I with Corpus Christi Calallen, Corpus Christi Miller, Corpus Chris- ti Tuloso-Midway and Alice.
Calhoun, Beeville and Miller all won district championships last season — setting up one of the most competitive districts in the state.
“It’s tough,” said Calhoun coach Richard Whitaker. “You see Calallen, Alice and Miller move down to 4A, and now we have some of the best football teams playing in the same district together.”
DISTRICT 12-4A, DIVISION I
“It’s very tough,” added Beeville coach Chris Soza. “Basically, it’s like saying, Beeville you guys move up to 5A without the numbers. It is what it is. We can’t cry about it.”
The Sandcrabs defeated Calallen on the final day of last year’s regular season to become outright district champions.
Calhoun advanced to the area round before falling to Boerne Champion.
But the Sandcrabs return four starters on offense and five on de- fense — including running backs Steve Johnson, Sean Flores and Jar- ius Stewart, who will transition into the quarterback position.
Calhoun begins the season ranked No. 5 in the Class 4A, Division I state poll.
“It’s a tough district, but hopefully we can get some playing time and get our kids back on the field,” Whitaker said. “They’re ready to go.”
The Trojans return four starters on offense and five on defense. Beeville is led by running back Jalen Spicer and William Harper. Harper, who also plays safety, will move into the quarterback position.
The Trojans will look to make an- other playoff push after advancing to the area round last season.
Beeville and Calhoun will meet in the District 15-4A, Division I opener Oct. 9 in Beeville.
“We’re going to get ready and it should be fun and it should be excit- ing,” Soza said. “When I was at Alice back in the day, that was our district so we’ll see.”

El Campo, Bay City change regions, keep opponents
BY MIKE FORMAN
[email protected]
El Campo and Bay City will be among fa- miliar company in District 12-4A, Division I. The district lost Fulshear and Sealy, but picked up Stafford to join Brazosport, Co-
lumbia and Needville.
“We’ve all been in a district before,” said
El Campo coach Wayne Condra. “It’s one of those districts that’s very talented from top to bottom and it will be a battle each and ev- ery week. It’s going to take everybody get- ting out there and doing what’s necessary every week.”
The No. 9 Ricebirds have a number of players returning from last year’s team, which advanced to the regional playoffs.
“I know a lot of teams lost a lot of senior leadership, but with the guys coming up they’re still going to be strong,” said first- year Bay City coach Robert Jones, who was an assistant at Brazosport last season. “El Campo will be the frontrunner with those
three running backs coming back.”
Jones graduated from Bay City and used the sport-specific time in strength and con-
ditioning to install the offense and defense. “The extra time this summer helped us,” he said. “We implemented our offense and defense over the summer, by the time Aug. 3 rolled around the kids jumped right in from the stuff that we had put in previous-
ly.”
The biggest change for the district was
moving from Region IV to Region III.
“It’s a big thing as far as the speed you see,” Condra said. “The thing about it is when you break down 4A, Division I this year, Region IV is loaded. They have a lot of great teams there like Region III. We have our district and we’re looking at the districts in East Texas. It’s going to a tough battle to get through the region and a tough matchup when you get to that semifinal
game.”

Cuero determined to reclaim top spot in district
BY MIKE FORMAN
[email protected]
Jack Alvarez has had very little time to get to know his players since taking over as Cuero’s athletic director and head football coach.
Alvarez knows even less about District 13-4A, District II opponents Gonzales, La Grange, Giddings, Navasota and Smithville.
“I have no idea,” he said. “No idea. I ex- pect to win it. I expect to win it. That’s how I play. I’m brand new, just go play.”
The Gobblers are picked to win the dis- trict by Dave Campbell’s Texas Football magazine, despite being the only team in the district to miss the playoffs last season.
Gonzales was one of the teams to defeat the Gobblers last season and dropped from Division I into the district in the UIL’s re- alignment and reclassification.
“I think we snuck up on some people last year,” said second-year Gonzales coach Michael Waldie. “We had a new coach, new staff, and a new scheme. Our kids just re- ally came together and we played some really good football. We lost three games to teams that went 37-5. Our expectation is to be a playoff team. Our expectation is let’s get out of this district. I honestly feel one through four has a chance to win the region.”
Giddings, Navasota and La Grange have all been state contenders.
“I know the rich tradition of all three,” Waldie said. “If you think about it, Navasota is recent state champs in the last two de- cades, Giddings and La Grange have been doing it forever, and the sleeper...I’ll say it right now, Smithville won a playoff game last year. We had a pretty darn good year ourselves, and if anybody thinks that was other than a blip for Cuero, then they ha- ven’t watched their lower levels because they are loaded.”
Alvarez will become more familiar with Cuero’s district opponents, but his main concern is how the Gobblers progress.
“I just want to see us execute, play hard and try to be a team instead of playing as a bunch of individuals,” he said. “If we play together as a team, I think we’re going to be hard to beat.”

Hallettsville, Yoakum prep for new district, region
BY REY CASTILLO
[email protected]
Hallettsville and Yoakum are no strang- ers to each other.
The rivals have played in the same dis- trict before and that won’t change this season.
Realignment moved the Brahmas and Bulldogs into Region III and in District 12-3A, Division I with Boling, Hitchcock, Hempstead and Columbus.
“The region is what changes things,” said Hallettsville coach Tommy Psencik. “To be honest, that’s what we’re going to have to prepare for as we go through dis- trict.”
Both teams are coming off playoff ap- pearances with the Brahmas reaching the Class 3A, Division I quarterfinals and the Bulldogs making it to the bi-district round.
The Brahmas enter the season ranked No. 8, and the Bulldogs come into the year at No. 20.
“We’ve played them the last couple of years,” said Yoakum coach Bo Robinson. “We’ve never played Boling, we’ve never played Hitchcock or Hempstead but we’ve seen them on film. It’s going to be like it always is. There are going to be some ath- letes in our district. I like that because it gets you ready for the important games.”

Yoakum will look to quarterback Blake Gordon to lead an offense that has an ex- perienced offensive line that can open up plays for running backs DeAndre Enoch, Dorien Hights and Jayden Jones.
“Region III — it is a change,” Robinson said. “That’s exciting because you get to see new people and go places in the playoffs that you’ve never played before so that’s exciting. There are some good teams in Region III. It’s probably a little more athletic than Region IV, matter of fact I know it is. But we’ve beat Region III in the last three or four years so we feel like we’re going to be all right.”
The Brahmas will look to running back Jonathon Brooks to lead the offense this season. Brooks, a Texas commit, rushed for 2,144 yards and 39 touchdowns last season.
Hallettsville will also rely on senior Ty Gerke, who can play wide receiver, quar- terback and defensive back.
Landon Sluka will lead the Brahmas’ of- fensive line with linebacker Price Pruett anchoring the defense.
“We want to see if our team is playing well as we go through district because our goal is to get better each day,” Psencik said. “Hitchock, Hempstead — we’ve been with them before. Columbus joined us when they came down from Class 4A, but it’s still similar to what we’ve had in the past.”

Industrial, Palacios to build on successful seasons
BY TYLER TYRE

Industrial had one of its most successful seasons ever last year.
The Cobras were unbeaten in district and finished 11-2 overall on their way to a regional round appearance in the playoffs.
But that doesn’t satisfy head coach Jamie Dixon. He expects more success in District 14-3A, Division II
“I’m familiar with some of them and not familiar with others,” Dixon said. “Mathis is down there and we played them last year and we know Edna, Palacios and Goliad but we just don’t know with the rest. But you don’t get to choose who is in your district so we’re going to line up against whoever it is and play our brand of football.”
The Cobras were picked to get to the state quarterfinals this year by Dave Campbell Texas Football, and Dixon relishes those ex- pectations.
“I expect for us to defend our district title even if it is in a new district,” Dixon said. “I also expect for us to make a run in the play- offs and face whoever comes our way. I want to be in the regional championship this year, and I want to win it.”
Palacios made back-to-back playoff expe- riences for the first time since the 1960s, but

Goliad begins the season with a new coach in Kevin Salazar, who was their defensive co- ordinator last season.
The Tigers went 1-9 and 1-4 in district last season and are looking to turn things around this year.
“Our goals are to compete in the district and find a way back into the playoffs,” Salazar said. “Once we get to that point we reevaluate and reset and see how far we can go.”
Edna also brought in a new coach in Jimmie Mitchell.
The Cowboys reached the area round of the playoffs last season, but are a much younger team this year with a new offense.
“It’s going to be tough with it being the first year in the new direction we’re going and a new offense, but our goal is go make the play- offs,” Mitchell said. “There’s a lot of senior depth that we lost and there’s some things we need to work on. But I’m pleased with where we’re at.”

New coach, same goals for Falls City

After eight years away, Mark Kirchhoff is back at the helm at Falls City.
The Beavers went 13-2 and 5-0 in dis- trict last season on their way to the Class 2A, Division II state semifinal appear- ance, and for Kirchhoff the expectations remain the same in District 16-2A, Divi- sion II.
“Falls City is a great place and the kids have been well coached,” Kirchhoff said. “There’s a high expectation level and we are going to go out and compete like we do every year.”
Falls City has six seniors returning and Kirchhoff is hoping they will be able to ex- perience a full senior season.
“Our biggest goal is to have our seniors out there and have a chance to give them a great final year of high school football and it sucks that we might not be able to control that,” he said. “After that, we’re taking it week by week and want to im- prove when we get to district, make play- offs and try to find our way through Re- gion IV.
Joining Falls City in District 16-2A, Divi- sion II are Yorktown, Woodsboro, Runge, Louise, Agua Dulce and Pettis.
Yorktown started the season strong but faltered down the stretch, going 3-7 and 0-4 in district play.
The Wildcats dropped to Division II af- ter spending last season in Class 2A, Di- vision I.
“It’s exciting to see some new teams,” said Yorktown head coach John-David Caffey. “It’s different now with us being one of the larger schools in the district now instead of the smallest. We know week in and week out there’s some old rivalries here and when you have to play teams like Falls City and Agua Dulce, it’s going to be a tough district every week.”
Yorktown missed the playoffs last sea- son but the goal for Caffey is to get back this year. The Wildcats return players at key positions, including at quarterback.
Louise is rebuilding and comes off a 1-10 season in which it went 1-3 in district.
For head coach Joe Bill, it’s important to improve in the win column.
“When you only win one game it’s al- ways dissapointing,” Bill said. “We want to increase our winning percentage and have a chance at the playoffs. We get to play against teams that are our size and our caliber and I’m excited to see what our kids can do.”
Key returners for the Hornets include Daylon Machieck at quarterback, D.D. Gaona at offensive guard and defensive end, Chris Vasquez at offensive guard and nose tackle and Rogeric Schooler at running back.
Runge and Woodsboro, like Falls City, enter the season with new coaches.
Stephen Davis is the head coach at Run- ge, and is hoping to improve on a 2-9 sea- son, in which the Yellowjackets went 2-3 in district .
“Even though we made the playoffs the last two years, they haven’t had a winning record,” Davis said. “So our first goal is to get to .500 or better and the next goal is to get past bi-district which is where our season has ended the last two years.”
The Yellowjackets return 10 starters from last year’s team.
Woodsboro failed to win a game last season, going 0-10 and 0-5 in district, but new head coach Johnny Lesak plans to turn things around.
“I want us to go out and be the most competitive we’ve ever been,” Lesak said. “It might not show in wins and losses but I want them to play absolutely as hard as they can every time the ball is snapped. If we do that, it will be a successful year.”
The Eagles have 13 returning starters, but with a new offense being installed Le- sak knows it will take time for the team to gel.
“I like the effort that we’ve shown,” Le- sak said. “The system is still new to them and we’re still trying to figure things out but I’ve seen some good things we can build on. There’s also things that we ar- en’t good at that we have to work on.”

Wharton ready for playoff push
BY TYLER TYRE
[email protected]
Coming off a district championship, Wharton had high expectations last season.
The Tigers fell short of their aspirations, finishing 5-6 with a 3-2 district record, good for third place in their district.
Now in his fourth season as Wharton head coach, Chad Butler is focused on getting back to a high level of play in District 12-4A, Division II.
“We think we should be competing for a district cham- pionship and making a run in the playoffs,” Butler said. “That’s our focus is putting ourselves in a good position because when you get to the playoffs anything can hap- pen.”
To do that Wharton will have to do well in a district that includes Bellville, Sweeny, La Marque, Royal and Sealy.
“It’s a really tough district,” Butler said. “You have Bellville and Sealy and those two are always really tough. Bellville especially has a really solid team coming back. La Marque and Sweeny are solid programs and so it’s all up for grabs and I think it could be anybody’s.”
Key returners for Wharton include running back and linebacker Keijon Waddell, wide receiver and defensive back James Jones and offensive and defensive lineman JaQuarian Hopkins.
Butler also expects contributions from newcomers Sterling Harris at quarterback, Jericho Cardenas at linebacker and Fred Jones at wide receiver and defen- sive back.
“They’ve looked really good so far,” Butler said. “It’s been a big adjustment because we’re doing a full virtual classroom so they don’t have that normal school day and the routine is different. But they’ve handled it well and they’ve been focused and getting good work in.”

Nixon-Smiley took a step in the right direction last season, making the playoffs for the first time since 2016.
This year, head coach Pablo Yba- rra’s goals are the same in District 15-3A, Divison II.
“I think we have a shot at the play- offs again this year,” Ybarra said. “We have experience and we are definetely a senior ball club so we’re hoping that those seniors carry us to where we need to be. They got their last year and understand what it takes, we just have to do it again.”

Karnes City will begin the sea- son under a new coach in Daniel Oelschlegel, he replaced Jim Wood who resigned after 12 seasons in charge.

Oelschlsclegel expects a challenge in district, but thinks the Badgers can handle it.

Tidehaven seeks fourth straight playoff appearance
BY TYLER TYRE
[email protected]
Tidehaven has found success over the past three years, making it to the region- al round in 2017, the state quarterfinals in 2018 and the bi-district round in 2019.
Head coach David Lucio is happy with how far the program has progressed.
“The thing about Tidehaven is we don’t normally have gigantic kids walking around, we build in the offseason,” Lucio said. “So when we didn’t get the same time we normally do in the weight room because of COVID, it kind of scared us. But we got in some good work and it’s showed in our first few weeks of prac- tice.”
Tidehaven will compete in District 14- 3A, Division II along with Van Vleck, Rice Consolidated, East Bernard, Danbury and Brazos.
Lucio will field an inexperienced team this year and hopes they get the jitters out in their first few games.
“When you play some young guys you know there will be mistakes,” he said. “What we are looking for is physicality and fearlessness from them. We want that they will do whatever it takes. Week to week that’s what we expect and the rest will come.”
Van Vleck missed the playoffs last year after making the postseason in 2018.
Head coach Robert Blackmon’s goal is to get back in the postseason, but he knows it will be a hard task in this dis- trict.
“I think it’s going to be tough,” Black- mon said. “We have some strong new schools and East Bernard and Tidehav- en have extremely good programs that are always right there at the top. Rice has gotten better as well, so we have to be at our best to get one of those four spots.”
Rice Consolidated made it to the play- offs last season, going 5-5 and 3-2 in dis- trict.
Jared Sloan, the head coach of the Raiders, is focused on getting his team
ready for the season.
“I think we’re kind of like everyone
else in that we are trying to get back into shape and those three months we lost is definitely showing up a little bit in condi- tioning,” Sloan said. “But we’ve shown a lot of positives in these first few weeks of practice and if we keep building on that move forward then I think we’ll have suc- cess this season.”

Shiner St. Paul and Hallettsville Sacred heart could be headed for another state championship showdown.
The Cardinals defeated the Indians 20-16 in last year’s TAPPS Division IV state title game.
St. Paul will be fielding its largest team in years, which includes a lot of experience.
“We have the opportunity to have a great season,” said St. Paul coach Jake Wachsmuth. “We have a great freshmen class. We also have seven seniors and nine juniors returning. We have a total of 32 players which is the most since 2008.” “We are pretty balanced when it comes to expe- rience, Wachsmuth continued.”
As for Sacred Heart, they will be under
the direction of veteran head coach David Husmann.
Husmann is Sacred Heart’s fourth head coach in four seasons.
“We have good, tough athletes this year. They have been working very hard,” Hus- mann said.
The Indians will feature junior quarter- back Austin Kutac, senior running back/ receiver Alex Angerstein and senior line- man Brennan Kana.
St. Paul will feature senior quarterback Kai Giese, senior receiver Gerard Nunez, and senior linemen James Fikac and Ted Machacek.
They will both compete in TAPPS Divi- sion III/IV, District 3 which includes Tem- ple Central Texas Christian, San Antonio Holy Cros and John Paul II out of Schertz.
