Sam Owusu

A s pastors of Calvary Worship Centre, it is a joy for
my wife and I to serve in an exceptional church.
We have been blessed with uplifting worship services and
witnessed some amazing miracles. We are experiencing
constant and steady growth in numbers. So many of you are
bringing your families AND inviting your friends! But more
importantly, we are also experiencing spiritual growth. We
have seen many who have met Jesus for the first time and
we have seen many recommit their lives to Jesus, their Sav-
ior and Lord. We have baptized many individuals and have
raised our membership. Our children and youth depart-
ments continue to soar. The spiritual growth and the chang-
es the Lord has brought in the lives here at Calvary has
been so exciting to watch. God is truly on the move in our
midst and we are looking forward to His greater works in
the years to come.
As you know, our core mission as a church is to Disciple all
Nations (Mathew 28:18-20). And this year, we crossed a
milestone. We now attract 106 nations from every continent
in the world. Beginning with four people in our living room,
Calvary Worship Centre is now comprised of more nations
than almost any church in the world! Glory be to God! God

1

is truly faithful. It reminds me of a word the Lord gave us
from Micah 4:1-2,

“In the last days the mountain of the Lord’s house will
be established as the highest of the mountains; it will
be exalted above the hills, and all nations will flow in
it. Many nations will come and say, “Come and let us
go up to the mountain of the Lord, to the house of the
God of Jacob. He will teach us his ways, so that we
may walk in his paths”.
Hundreds of volunteers continue to serve in many different
ministry areas. Calvary is packed with talent and commit-
ment. Thank you to each of you who serve. From the
bookstore, to our nursery workers, to greeters, to counters,
security, and ushers, worship team, prayer team, to media &
sound, to janitors, to our children and youth volunteers, and
all our grow groups.
I am so thankful for the staff God has surrounded me with.
Thank you for your commitment to serve. Leadership transi-
tion has meant re-evaluating our roles. The staff has as-
sumed more responsibility for carrying out the day-to-day
ministry of the church, and they have been most willing and
effective in this regard. They assist with the planning and im-
plementation of our numerous church programs, including
Camp Hope (Re-Vive Conferences), Women’s conference,
Mission trips, etc. This is in addition to planning our Sunday
services, and coordinating multiple events on the church cal-
endar.
What’s next for Calvary?
In the immediate future, we are sensing God is calling us to
build spiritual capacity. It is the process through which Cal-
vary Worship Center prepares and prays for the increase
and development of disciples and resources to harness
God’s harvest (Matthew 9:36-37; Luke 5:4-6; Luke 5:37-39;
Isaiah 54:1-3; 2 Kings 4:3; 6; Judges 18:13-26).

2

We know God is about to bless us with an abundant bless-
ing of souls. So, we are making room for them. This means
equipping new disciples to take their place in God’s vine-
yard. It means increasing our giving capacity to take the
gospel to our immediate neighborhood and beyond. It
means expanding our facilities to create room for growth.
Our success in this area will identify us as a disciple-making
church: A church that God loves to bless and can use in in-
credible ways. It is not a perfect church. It is one that is con-
stantly aligning itself to please God. A place where we grow
spiritually, leading to our desire to be engaged in its func-
tions. This will lead to a strong sense of mission as we see
salvations, baptisms, transformed lives, relationships healed,
and leaders being raised up. In a disciple-making church if
you miss a week you’re disappointed rather than relieved.
We want to be involved because we know good things hap-
pen within and around our church. We also want to invest
for the long-haul in the kingdom of God. In a disciple-
making church we enjoy telling others about God, Christians
and non-Christians alike. You can relax at a disciple-making
church. Mistakes are made, yet the people in our church
own up to their mistakes, learn and grow from them.
Finally, in a disciple-making church we are delightfully chal-
lenged. We leave different than when we arrived. We bear
with people, as people bear with us. Each week we are en-
couraged, equipped, and empowered with the tools needed
for life, eternal life!
The more we grow to be like Christ, the more committed to
His purposes we become and the more involved in HIS mis-
sion we are. We become more irresistible we are to Him so
that He cannot remove His hand of blessing, because we
are HIS church.

3

Now to Him who is able to do immeasurably more
than all we ask or imagine, according to His power
that is at work within us, to Him be glory in the church
and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for
ever and ever! Amen (Ephesians 3:20).
Jesus is coming soon! Let’s keep watching and waiting, for
soon and very soon, we are going to see the KING.

FOCUS REPORTS

(Reports from a selection of ministries at CWC)

Discipleship in Calvary Worship Centre

A new ministry focused on developing the area of Disciple-
ship in Calvary Worship Centre was formed in 2016 under
the leadership of Barbara White. The vision for the disciple-
ship ministry is to create more awareness and intentionality
in the church around fulfilling the command given by Jesus
(known as the Great Commission) found in Matthew 28:18-
20 to go and make disciples of all nations.
To make disciples, you need to be a disciple. What does this
mean, and how do you make disciples according the Scrip-
tures? How can our congregation be encouraged to become
more intentional about their personal spiritual growth and
maturity, and be equipped to be a disciple and make disci-
ples?
These were some of the questions that were prayed about
and discussed among the pastoral leadership level at this
time and throughout 2017.

5

Looking at the model found in the New Testament used by
Jesus and the early church, it was clear that the best environ-
ment for discipleship to occur was in a small group. It was
decided to focus first on building community and spiritual
growth through developing small groups with more focus on
discipleship in Calvary. At the beginning of the process,
there were around 10 Bible study groups, and the participa-
tion in them was very small (less than 100 people) in com-
parison to the size of the attendance on Sunday and Friday
night services.
In September/October 2016, G.R.O.W. Groups were
launched. During the fall session - October to December
there were 18 groups available, 400 participants registered
and an average of 70% attended regularly. Out of those
400, there were approximately 200 unique members – as
some people attended more than one group.
In 2017 there was an increase in both awareness and par-
ticipation in G.R.O.W groups as being a critical part of the
discipleship process. In September and October we had a
sermon series on the subject of discipleship looking at what
the Scripture says about being a disciple and how the early
church grew through discipleship.
During the year there were G.R.O.W. groups available dur-
ing the winter, spring and fall seasons. During the summer
months groups were encouraged to meet more informally
once a month to help people stay connected. Each quarter
some groups continue to meet as a group from the previous
quarter, and new groups are introduced based on a specific
topic to be studied. Information about groups was available
in a brochure and online, with registration available after
Sunday services at the G.R.O.W group booth.
Calvary has a reporting system in place for more accurate
information about participation in the groups. However this

6

process is still being improved and therefore the following
numbers are approximate:
In 2017 there were 45 different groups that met during the
year. There were 800 people registered in the groups during
2017, and 511 of that number were distinct members, with
some people attending more than one group. In addition,
there were 103 guests reported who attended a group.
As discipleship becomes an essential part of Calvary’s DNA
we hope that everyone will become part of a G.R.O.W.
Group and become equipped to disciple others in their
spiritual journey.

REPORT FROM THE CWC MUSIC & ARTS DEPT.

Highlights

This past year of 2017 to 2018 has been an exciting and
hard-working year for the Music and Arts department of
CWC. With so many achievements worth highlighting, a few
to spotlight would include the founding of our very own re-
cording label (Calvary Worship Canada) and our very first

7

album. Since this has been in the making for quite some
time, it was an honor to finally capture the power of CWC
music in a live concert recording as CWC celebrated 25
years of God’s faithfulness. Our dance team, Praise in Mo-
tion, was featured during this concert; what a pleasure it was
to worship God together through different avenues.
In the same year, our annual church camp retreat - Re-VIVE
was held for four days rather than three giving us all more
opportunities to serve and minister to our God and church.
We experienced such a mighty visitation of the Holy Spirit
and we are always excited to partner with God and our
church to facilitate an environment for God to meet his peo-
ple. Christmas time saw our Drama department featured
beautifully in our annual candlelight service. This depart-
ment worked hard to present a skit about the real meaning
of Christmas using a multi-dimensional media experience
including the use of video technology and sound effects add-
ing depth and context to the performance. We look forward
to seeing more from the drama department in the future.
It’s also been our joy to invite other local artists like Tamara
Kleinsasser, Pedro Mota and our very own Denis Mayer to
minster at CWC in the spirit of worship.
Future Plans
In the future we look forward to a continued and more de-
veloped use of technology to create a better cross-cultural
worship experience and to have the worship in our services
recorded. We also look forward to the growth and expan-
sions of all departments to afford us the ability to minister
beyond the walls of CWC. Lastly, we anticipate the chance
to write and record our own songs on a regular and con-
sistent basis.
Needs: As a ministry, we desire the continued support and
prayers of the saints. We rely heavily upon the power and

8

flow of the Spirit in order to minister and reach the world.
We are grateful for your prayers and ask that they continue
for the glory of God.
We look forward to seeing God’s glory unfold in a greater
measure we strive to serve Him through the Music & Arts
ministry.

REPORT FROM THE CWC CHILDREN’S MINISTRY.

A special thank you to our church family that serve in the
F.L.I.P. Kidz Children’s Ministry.
We would not have been able to do all the great things that
are taking place without your commitment. As I reflect on
the passing year, I am deeply grateful for the many people
who give so consistently in the Children’s Ministry depart-
ment. By the power of the Holy Spirit, lives are being trans-
formed, spiritual seeds are being planted, kids are hearing
about the gospel of Christ, and faith is deepening each
week. None of this would be possible without our faithful
team members.

9

Over the past year we have implemented some changes in
our ministry to make the kid’s ministry more secure and also
cosmetic changes to the environment to make the ministry
more welcoming to new and current children and their fami-
lies. Our desire is to continue evaluating and improve differ-
ent aspects of the ministry in order to give God our best and
give Him all the glory.
Highlights in 2018
• We have had 18 kids accept Christ and had 3 kids get

baptised
• Successful and fun outreach initiatives through our annu-

al Vacation Bible School, Family Fun Day, Camp Hope,
and HallowHim Harvest festival
• In April we hired on two new part-time staff members,
one of which, Vivesh Moodley was then appointed the
new Director of Children’s Ministry on October 1, 2018
• A Children’s Ministry prayer team has been developed
with over 25 children in attendance on a weekly basis
Our average attendance per week is 165 kids, ages 2—12.
Special Needs
• Volunteers/servants willing to assist more in working
alongside the kids with ushering, crafts etc. not neces-
sarily as teachers.
Future Plans
• Awanas to be launched March 2019.
We look forward to serving with along with you this new
year! Thank you for your support of the CWC Children’s
Ministry.
Sincerely,
Michelle Saldeba
(Former Director of Children’s Ministry)

AT CWC

For the benefit of many of our newer members and also
some of the long-standing members who do not fully know
how CWC operates, we would like to take this opportunity to
give an overview of the leadership structure at CWC.

1. BOARD OF DIRECTORS:

This is a body of up to12 people who hold fiduciary responsi-
bility for the operations of Calvary Worship Centre. The
Board of Directors is the body in charge of church opera-
tions, assets, staffing and holds ultimate responsibility for
how the church operates. They also have responsibility for
appointing pastors at CWC. The Board of Directors meets
about 4 times a year to review the operations of the church
and give guidance and direction to the leadership. The fol-
lowing are the current members of the Board of Directors:

Pastor Sam Owusu Pastor Chris Komagum
Pastor Rosemond Owusu Henry Agbozo
Del Nsumbu John Mcleod
Nike Akinsamni Pamela Addea-Akyea
Peter Tran Jo Ferrey
Jason Williamson

16

2. PASTORS BOARD
The Pastors Board comprises all pastors of CWC plus the
Executive Director. They are in charge of the day-to-day run-
ning of the church and also hold spiritual oversight of the
congregation. The Pastors Board meets weekly on Tuesdays,
and also holds a monthly prayer retreat to pray about issues
affecting the spiritual life and direction of the church.

3. ELDERS BOARD (Surrey Church)
A recent development is the decision by the Board of Direc-
tors to appoint an Elders Board for the Surrey Central
Church of CWC. Up to this point, the Board of Directors has
functioned in a dual role of being both Directors and Elders.
However with effect from January 2019, a new body of El-
ders will be formed to assist the pastors in looking after the
spiritual life and direction of the church. As the church has
grown, it has become clear that the pool of leadership needs
to be widened and it is also increasingly difficult for one
body to manage both the fiduciary responsibility of the
church and also the spiritual support for the congregation.
Hence the decision to appoint a new Elders Board.

The members of the Elders Board will be nominated by the
Pastors Board and they will be introduced to the congrega-
tion in January.

In addition to the 3 boards referred to previously, CWC has
a Leaders Team that comprises all heads of departments
and sub-group leaders and this Leaders Team is responsible
for all the meetings and various events that take place
though the year.

CWC FUNDRAISING CAMPAIGN REPORT

In June 2018, CWC launched a capital fund-raising campaign
to raise funds for the new church building project. To recap,
the following are some of the key information pieces for the
‘Together We Build’ campaign.

Q. What is the Together We Build program?

A. It is a program to challenge the congregation “together” to
help the church provide the funds for our building project.
The funds will help us to build a 1650 seat sanctuary as
well as meeting and other office spaces.

Q. What is the objective of Together We Build?

A. The immediate objective is to raise funds over a three-year
period by receiving commitments from our membership.

Our target is to raise $10 Million to finance Phase 1 of the
building project without borrowing from the banks and subject-
ing the church to excessive mortgage payments which can
drain the ministry of the church.

Thank you to everyone who has contributed in any way to our
campaign, and also to those who are planning to contribute.

We are still in the early stages of the campaign and are really
excited about what God is doing in the church. There is still a
lot of work to be done, but we believe God will give us all the
resources we need to complete this project successfully.

Building Progress Update

• The land purchased by the church from the city of Surrey is
located at 11377 Bridgeview Drive, right next door to the
Red Racer Brewery.

• It is a 3.7acre ‘L’ shaped lot which will have the church
building and space for 300 cars.

• The church building will be roughly 41,000 sq ft in size and
will have enough room for 1650 people in the sanctuary.
Our design will allow the addition of a balcony later to ex-
pand the capacity to more than 2100 people.

• There will also be space for 300 kids and a youth hall that
could take 150 people.

• Preliminary drawings of the layout have been displayed in
the church lobby, but this is subject to revision as the de-
sign team works further on the project.

• Due to the fact that the lot is in a flood plain, we have to
’preload and fill’ all of the area to compress the soils and
push out the water before we can build. This process start-
ed around the end of August and is expected to take
around 18 months to complete. Our contractor for this
stage of the project is Pacific Earthworks, and the project is
being supervised by CitiWorks Engineering. For due dili-
gence, the Building Committee received at least 3 bids
from reputable companies for this project and Pacific
Earthworks won the bid.

• Once ‘Preload and Fill’ is completed, and our Geotechnical
Engineers (GeoPacific Consultants) verify that we can start
building, we will then proceed to construction of the build-
ing. We expect construction to take about 12 to 18 months
to complete.

19

The Building Committee members are:

Jeff Ferrey (Project Director) Larry Cope
Henry Agbozo Binega Markos
Godfried Lovelace-Dodoo Sue Cope

In addition, Menee Kahanguvi was recently appointed to assist
with clerical support for the committee.

Please address any building related questions to Jeff Ferrey.
We will be providing you with regular updates as the project
progresses.

TWB Financial Update

A total of 215 families have made a financial pledge toward
the ‘Together We Build’ Fundraising Program. The financial
summary is as follows:

 FAITH TARGET: $10 MILLION
 PLEDGES RECEIVED; $2,501,265
 AMOUNT RECEIVED: $262,825 (11% of pledges)

In addition, we have received several pieces of jewellery and
other valuables as contributions. These will be valued and sold
to raise additional funds.

A special thanks to Ken Ononeze who heads our Campaign
Follow-up team, together with all the members of the Follow-up
team. Thanks also to Del Nsumbu who heads the Fundraising
Team and will be coming up with other fundraising initiatives in
the next few months. With God, All things are possible.
