The Journey of the Orb
This short piece is essentially a structured cartooning exercise based around a 14-page pad of comic-strip-sized Bristol board I had in the
closet; I decided to use this pad to create my activity for September 2022. Each strip features a character based on a Dungeons and
Dragons miniature from the remains of my once-extensive collection. The character picks up an object – a sort of semi-gelatinous orb, by
the look of it – and then moves through an environment to deposit it in a liminal space. The next character picks it up and moves through
a different environment. Lather, rinse, and repeat for 14 three-panel strips.
Along the way, I experimented with backgrounds, framing, body language, shading, spot blacks, cross-hatching, and so on. This exercising
was all really the point, not creating any sort of narrative or meaning (although there is a “surprise” ending). And just for fun, I added a
map on the last page, tracking the journey across the landscape.
Cheers.
