DOS CIPOTES
DATES: 8/5-9/14 OPENING RECEPTION:
F, 8/9, 5:00 P.M. - 9:00 P.M.
This show highlights work that has been made by first generation Salvadorian-American artists that were born and raised in Los Angeles.
These two artists are coming together to show different styles of art from capturing the story of a loved one’s immigration journey through portraiture to artwork about the erasure of history in Los Angeles through urban landscapes.
They will also be displaying their collaborative work under their group name, "Dos Cipotes." Their collaborative work focuses on their personal experiences as children of immigrants fleeing the Salvadorian Civil War and what it was like growing up in 1990's America.
In Salvadorian slang, a "cipote' is a common term given to children and adolescents. Elmer Guevara and Josh Vasquez are "Dos Cipotes" documenting and expressing their life experiences through art.
DÍA DE LOS MUERTOS:
OPEN GROUP SHOW
DATES: 9/23-11/4
OPENING RECEPTION: TH, 10/3 - 5:00 P.M. - 9:00 P.M.
Dia de Los Muertos or The Day of the Dead is a Mexican and Mexican American celebration that happens annually on November 1st and 2nd. Día de Los Muertos is a holiday that honors and celebrates the dead with lively vibrant festivities. The Arts and Recreation Center hosts an annual Day of the Dead exhibit, along with a special celebration and craft projects for all ages. BAJITO Y SUAVECITO:
MUJERES DE LOWRIDING
EXHIBIT DATES: TBA
OPENING RECEPTION: TBD
Bajito Y Suavecito: Mujeres de Lowriding highlights work that has been created by Jacqueline Valenzuela, a female artist who also owns and cruises her own lowrider. The artist spotlights women within the lowrider community which are usually ignored in this male- dominated community. Usually when someone outside of the lowrider world thinks of women and these candied cars they think of highly sexualized women merely placed alongside the car. What is not as well-known is the large amount of women lowriders within this community. These women are highlighted in Jacqueline’s work by bringing their real life experience to a forefront.
Using bold colors, portraiture and the urban landscape she creates compositions that emphasize femininity in a male-dominated world. Her works combines the erasure of women lowriders with the murals that are commonly seen in Latinx communities that focus on religion and social issues. The various artistic languages that travel throughout the picture plane bring forth the everyday scenery that these women face. The overwhelming amount of different colors and imagery demand the audience, whether outsiders or Chicano lowriders, to not overlook the woman. Giving an unedited version of these women, their candied cars and an urban landscape.
