MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR
Welcome to our Fall 2018/Winter 2019, Recreation Guide for the City of Baldwin Park’s Recreation and Community Services Department. I invite you to discover the award-winning recreation programs, services, and special events the department has to offer. Our dedicated group of staff is excited to share the new and exciting programs from the return of the BASiC Childcare & Camps that will get students prepared for the back-to-school season, to taking part in extracurricular activities afterschool from any our specialty classes, arts programs, or the popular basketball youth sports season. There is something for all ages to enjoy from tiny tots, teens, to adults and seniors programs. This winter, ring in the New Year with us in 2018, and create your new-year’s resolution around the many services that will help improve your quality of life.
After a very successful Pride of the Valley Open Streets, the City of Baldwin Park will kick-off it’s fall/winter season special events. Our award-winning Senior Prom returns with the theme “Puttin on the Ritz with A Night of Magical Memories” to crown the new King and Queen, In November, the Celebrate Baldwin Park Parade themed, “Commemorating Community Excellence” hits the streets, followed by a four-day Carnival from Thursday, November 1st through Sunday, November 4th. A special gathering will honour our community soldiers at the 27th Annual Veterans Day Ceremony. The holiday season debuts with the Annual Tree Lighting on November 29th and Breakfast with Santa on December 1st. The season of giving is celebrated with the Santa’s Clothes Program, and Holiday Baskets. Lastly, the New Year brings forward a prosperous 2019, with the Lunar New Year Celebration on February 8th, and to close out the lovely season the Valentine’s Day Celebration will mark the end of the winter special events. I personally invite you to join in on all the fun!
As Director, I place a high emphasis on improving the recreational facilities and existing parks, as well as creating new recreational opportunities and access for open green space as a top priority. The Walnut Creek Renovation Project is set to be completed with Phase III of the project providing a beautiful natural oasis in the Hub of the San Gabriel Valley. The final phase includes a fitness zone, trail markers, ADA entrance to the park, monument entrance sign, property line drought tolerant landscape, multilingual way finding signs, parking lot rehabilitation, security gate, solar lighting, and additional security cameras. Also, be sure to check out the improvements we are making to Morgan Park that include the improvements to the Fitness Zone area with the installation of a new shade structure and new fitness loop with markers. Come discover why Parks Make Life Better in Baldwin Park!
Thank you for letting us serve you.

The Cities of Baldwin Park, Irwindale and the Los Angeles County Department of Parks and Recreation- Santa Fe Dam Recreation Area partnered with the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (Metro) to host the Pride of the Valley Open Streets event on Sunday, September 16 that provided bicyclists, walkers, runners and rollers with a full day of car-free local streets. It was the first Open Streets event in the Emerald Necklace region along the San Gabriel River Trail.
‘Pride of the Valley Open Streets’ included four and a half miles of roadway will be closed to vehicular traffic, attracting thousands of participants from throughout Los Angeles County.
The event brought together a spirit of sustainability with a block party environment. Attendees enjoyed a family-friendly environment with live performances by Erik Antonio, featuring Mariachi Los Reyes, health and wellness activities, food stalls, rock climbing wall, BMX demonstrations, Pokémon gyms and stops for gamers, 102.7 KIIS FM DJ with free cool swag, and free kid fun zones throughout the route.

This is an important and meaningful volunteer opportunity for teenagers to really get to know their community and realize how fortunate they truly are. There will be donation boxes at the Community Center and Teen Center where lightly worn clothing, blankets, new socks and underwear, hygiene supplies and nonperishable canned goods will be collected. Care package assembly will be taking place November 19th-21st and distribution will occur November 22nd on Thanksgiving morning. Sign-up no later than November 16th if interested to participate in this community project.

The Victims Assistance Program is partnered with the State of California to assist individuals who have been the victim of a crime, witnessed a crime, and/or the immediate or surviving family member of the party associated with the crime. This program offers assistance with trauma that follows after experiencing a crime. Many crime victims may not realize they are entitled to financial assistance to aid them during their recovery process. Our therapists will assist you with your distress and help you apply for financial assistance through the State of California. *Please call to schedule an individualized assessment to see what type of specialist will be the best for your case needs.
• Veterans Behavioral Health Service
For those who have served our country with unrivaled sacrifice, we offer programs and services to help with readjustment into the “civilian” world. Returning home from war zones, reliving painful experiences from previous tours of duty, while learning to readjust to a different world, can be difficult and sometimes stress begins to arise. Our programs extend, not only to the veteran, but to their families. This includes therapy on an individual basis or with their family. Sessions are design to help family members identify signs of anxiety, distress, depression, self-medicating (drugs and/or alcohol abuse), and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. If you have found the wait too long at the local VA Hospital or fear of discrimination for seeking help; California Mental Health Connection has therapists available to fit your schedule with the utmost discretion.
• Youth Art Program
For at risk youth presenting the first signs of problems at school, undergoing cyber bullying, harassment, depression, negative influence. Open group for 52 sessions.
• Domestic Violence Groups
Our group is a safe, non-threatening place for the domestic victims to come share their pain, their frustrations, and their abuse experience to heal from toxic relations and become violence free.
COURT MANDATED PROGRAMS
•Anger Management
We can provide an individualized experience with the option of 16 or 32 sessions as well as accommodate in a group setting of at least 8 other peers to work on anger management issues. Professional staff will provide you with the necessary court report requirements.
•Domestic Violence
We have two groups for the 52 court-mandated sessions for perpetrators, which allows the individual 2 hours a week sessions. We also provide a women’s group which takes place year-round, every Tuesday to work on co-dependent issues and destructive relationships. We provide you with the necessary Court/ DCFS reports requirements, as well as support in coping with the aftermath of surviving violence.
•Substance Abuse
Substance abuse counselors and 12 step substance abuse counseling for alcohol and drugs will provide you with the necessary court report requirements.
•Parenting
The parenting conflict resolution class is in English/Spanish for stronger bonding and conflict resolution. The class is a 16 sixteen sessions class.
•Family Therapy
We can provide for your DCFS, Court and legal needs towards reunification and family therapy.
Call to schedule an individualized assessment or to Sign-up for group sessions.
•Immigration Reports (U-VISA)
If you have been a victim of a crime, California Mental Health Connection can assist you with your U-Visa process by working with your immigration attorney or clinic on your assessment reports, letters of support and other legal requirements that mental health professionals can provide you with. Victims of various types of crimes are able to submit an application to be granted temporary legal status, as well as the eligibility to legally work in the U.S. for up to four (4) years. This application may also include immediate family members to include husbands, wives, step-parents and children 18 years old and younger.
•Schools Prevention & Early Intervention Counseling

If you enjoy playing Bingo, then you will enjoy to participate in a game of Lotería a cultural game. Lotería is a game of chance just like Bingo, but instead of using numbers and letters it uses images. The image gets called out and if the image is on your card you go ahead and put a bean on it, and no there is no mistake we actually mean a bean. Various games are played, whether it is to do a line across, full card, and so on. So if you love bingo, why not come on down and try Lotería out.
