SYF 2023 Celebrations Festival Concert @ Esplanade The band’s colour guards team was selected by MOE Arts Education Branch to be featured in the Festival Concert at the Esplanade - Theatres by the Bay on 1 July 2023. Together with Queenstown Secondary School band and Malay dance group, our colour guards performed a rhythmic fusion of the popular Malay folk song “Di-Tanjong Katong ‘’. Preparations for Singapore Youth Festival 2024 2023 is a year of rejuvenation and recharge after the Covid period. The theme of the competition was ‘Our Schools, Our Stories’. Our Secondary 3 students had also learned to translate their skills from storyboarding to an actual video. Using these skills, they had taken part in the Drug Free SG video competition. For student career guidance, we had brought our Secondary 3 students to Zing Media studio for an experience in an actual studio setting where they get to do hands-on activity of a live broadcasting. CCA Highlights Achievements Three of our students had received the commendation awards at the EE Photo Challenge 2023. Contribution to school PDM members had also aided the school by capturing memorable key school events such as the S.E.A ceremony, Chinese New Year concert, Hari Raya concert, National Day celebrations and Springfest. These photographs were archived and used for various school publications. Exhibition Students also get to curate and exhibit their photography works in school. Mental Skills Training includes strengthening and conditioning of the mind towards shooters’ goals and competitive spirit. Intra & Inter school games and competitions The club’s focus is the National School Games. We also participate in other competitions hosted by the Singapore Shooting Association, NUS & NTU Invitational Shoots. The student councillors also had a camp during the June holidays. It was the first time since the pandemic that they were able to experience a residential camp. Applied Learning Programme The school’s Applied Learning Programme (ALP) is Critical Thinking and Effective Communication through Media Literacy. Our Secondary One and Two students go through cohort-based programmes where they are guided on transforming their passions into societal impact with focus on social issues and sustainability. They go through training on communicating clearly, from writing speeches to designing infographics. With these skills, they begin to experience what is needed to help make an impact on others. This also gives them the opportunity to learn creative media production and hone their skills in communicating information responsibly and confidently. Aesthetics Week 2023 Creative Manga Art Workshop As part of the Aesthetics Week, the Art department invited Mr. Sean Lam, a Singaporean graphic novelist and artist, to conduct a manga drawing and storytelling workshop for students. Through this workshop, he aimed to develop students’ visual communication skills, including visual storytelling and panelling, to unleash their creative potential in artistic expression. Creative Clay Workshop Students had the opportunity to enjoy the ‘Have Fun with Clay’ art workshop, conducted by our art teachers during Aesthetics Week. The session was designed to infuse the joy of learning into our students, allowing them to create their own miniature figurines using jumping clay. Art Exhibition - Theme: Wonders of Expression The West Spring annual mini Art Exhibition serves as a showcase for the art curriculum designed for Secondary One and Two students, as well as Secondary Three and Four Art students. The dynamic selection of artworks portrays and shares students’ experiences and self-expression in their creative art processes. Through an inquiry-based learning experience, they explore different media, both digital and traditional, while conceptualising various themes. This exhibition provides students with the opportunity to see, share, and take pride in the work they and their peers have created. This year, the exhibition was featured during a visit by the Minister of Education, Mr. Chan Chun Sing, to the school. He interacted with the student-artists, discussing their art journey at West Spring and learning about their aspirations. WSSS West Spring Got Talent! In conjunction with the Aesthetics Week, the Music Department organised ‘West Spring Got Talent!’ This annual platform provides students with an opportunity to display their talents in the performing arts, whether it be playing a musical instrument, singing, or dancing. Students enrolled in higher-level Music courses (O Level & Music Elective Programme) were invited to perform during this showcase. English Language and Literature Week 2023 This year, the finals of our very own West Spring’s English Language and Literature (ELL) Week was held on 7th July 2023. We had various live competitions such as Scrabble, Boggle and Taboo. What makes this year’s event even more special was the Meet-The-Playwright session with Professor Geraldine Song, our local writer for our Secondary 2 Literature text, The Ugly Singaporeans. The students had fun, as well as a very enriching session where they posed questions to the playwright about the essence of writing, and the thematic concerns behind the play that they are currently studying. The teachers had a whale of time organising the events; just look at the smiles on their faces! Other than the live segments, everyone was involved in one way or another when they participated in the various ELL activities in class. Not only that, our very own Secondary 4 Literature students won the Unseen Debate at this year’s National Schools Literature Festival 2023! Humanities Week 2023 The annual event this year was carried out through an online competition involving several Humanities subjects. Students of all levels could participate in the quiz and engage with sources that would instil greater interest in Humanities through current affairs. This also promoted understanding of the VUCA world and the economic and political relations that define the world we live in today. Mother Tongue Language Fortnight 2023 Mother Tongue Language Fortnight Programme: Chinese Language Unit This annual programme aims to instil the love for Chinese culture in an authentic and fun learning environment. Secondary One Chinese students enjoyed the local songs introduction (新瑶和本地流行歌曲的欣赏会)in which students were able to learn and listen to songs by our local Singers such as Lin Jun Jie, Tanya, and many more. For the Secondary Two Chinese students, they had the opportunity to meet two DJs, Qi Jia and Ze Liang, from FM 933. The DJs shared their journey as radio hosts, introduced some Chinese singers, and played games with our students. While the juniors were enjoying the musical aspect of Chinese culture, the Secondary Three students engaged in a quiz to understand and learn Chinese. The Secondary Three Higher Chinese Language students were the ones who took the initiative to plan and carry out the Chinese Challenge for the Secondary 3 Express students, creating an exciting and educational experience. Additionally, some of the Secondary Four students visited Haw Par Villa and participated in an amazing race. Despite the hot weather, a team of dedicated volunteers acted as station masters, motivating students with tasks such as completing the Chapteh challenge. Lastly, some Secondary Four and Five students had the chance to meet Zong Zi Jie, a Mediacorp artist. He shared his journey in learning Chinese and played games with the students, which they thoroughly enjoyed. A Chinese Chess Competition was also held for a group of students interested in Chinese Chess, providing an opportunity for them to learn from one another. Mother Tongue Language Fortnight Programme: Malay Language Unit This annual program aims to instil a love for Malay culture in an authentic and enjoyable learning environment. The theme for this year’s MTL Fortnight program is ‘Music & Dance,’ offering Malay Language students the opportunity to explore Malay Arts through various exciting activities. Secondary One Malay Language students participated in a mass dance activity after learning basic “Zapin” steps, while Secondary Two students delved into the world of Malay music through P. Ramlee’s movies. Secondary Three students engaged in a “kompang” workshop to learn more about Malay drums, and Secondary Four students had the unique chance to interact with Mdm Som Said, a National Cultural Medallion Award recipient, at her dance studio. This experience was complemented by a visit to the Geylang Serai Heritage Gallery. To conclude the 2023 MTL Fortnight Program for the unit, Secondary 5 students organised an exhibition featuring various Malay music genres. School Excellence Awards Ceremony 2023 Our 22nd School Excellence Ceremony took place on February 24th and March 10th, respectively. With the lifting of Covid-19 restrictions, we experienced the ceremony in its entirety, without pre-recordings of students’ performances. Both parents and invited guests were physically present to witness the acknowledgment of their children’s outstanding achievements in academics and CoCurricular Activities (CCA). The event also served to honour our staff for their dedicated long service to the school. In addition, we had the privilege to have our former Principal, Mr. Adolphus Tan, grace the occasion as the Guest of Honour. His presence, alongside members of our School Advisory Committee and Parent Support Group, added to the distinguished gathering and significantly contributed to the overall success of the ceremony. Secondary Two, Three and Four Applied Learning Modules and Elective Modules 2023 The Applied Learning Module (ALM) at Polytechnics and Institutes of Technical Education (ITE) is that bridge to the world beyond, and our Secondary Two, Three and Four students have embraced this transformative journey with zest. During the first semester, our students had embarked on a diverse array of ALM courses, ranging from aerospace exploration to culinary arts, and then to product design. The aerospace course saw them soaring through the skies of innovation, the culinary journey ignited their inner chefs, and the product design process brought their ideas to life. Each experience added a new layer to their learning adventure, fostering creativity and honing their problem-solving skills. Our students were active participants, diving into hands-on tasks that stirred their curiosity and stretched their capabilities. Staff Well-Being Activities On 5 July 2023, the SWB organised fun and engaging bonding activities for the staff. Activities ranged from Interest Groups like Cooking, Mini Clay Garden Making and Planting of Ornamentals to Physical Activities like Yoga, Air Rifle Shooting and Badminton. SWB also encouraged staff to take part in MOE Sports for Life Walk/Run Fitness Assessment at Choa Chu Kang Sports Stadium. Terrarium Workshop was also organised in Term 4. To further enhance the designing of assessment rubrics, IP Heads and Teacher Leaders worked together to conduct clinic sessions for the various departments on 10 May 2023. An interdepartmental rubrics critique session conducted on 24 May 2023 Key Personnel (KP) Bonding and Strategic Planning A Key Personnel Bonding and Strategic Planning session was held at the Singapore Discovery Centre (SDC) on 29 March. KP gathered at SDC to discuss school programmes based on the three Strategic Thrusts using SWOT. After the Strategic Planning discussion, KP also had the chance to experience Escape Rooms with National Education elements. School-Based Training on Designing Quality Feedback in Support of Assessment for Learning A school-based training on Designing Quality Feedback in Support of Assessment for Learning was conducted by NIE Professor Ms P Durga Devi for all Key Personnel on 8 Mar. The Staff Excellence Committee also conducted a school-based training on Quality Feedback for teachers on 26 April 2023. To further enhance the knowledge of different levels of Feedback in Support of Assessment for Learning, IP Heads and Teacher Leaders worked together to conduct clinic sessions for the various departments on 2 August 2023. School Staff Retreat EAS Team Building Workshop 2023 The EAS Team Building Workshop was conducted on 7 Sep by Learning Strategists Training & Consultancy. Through this workshop, our EAS understood the importance of shared organisation vision and good team communication skills. They enjoyed the team building session and benefited from the workshop. Staff Learning Journey The Staff Learning Journey was held at Singrow Pte Ltd on 20 Nov. All staff gathered at the Singrow Lounge before they split into different groups for concurrent activities. During the one-hour farm tour, staff were introduced to Singrow’s Automated Indoor Growing System GMO vs Genomic Editing and the varieties of strawberries etc. Our staff also have the chance to harvest the strawberries. The lower secondary projects’ components include the design processes of generating and developing ideas, building mock-ups, creating sketch of developed idea and realising of prototypes. Secondary One: Design and Make a Light cum Pencil Holder Secondary Two: Design and Make a Mechanism Toy The Secondary Three students focussed on design journaling by applying design thinking processes. They also develop their drawing skills through using SketchUp software and prototype making skills in preparation for the GCE coursework in Secondary Four. Singapore Polytechnic Engineering Challenge Selected Secondary 2 students participated in this year’s Engineering Challenge and attended a Planter’s workshop organised by Singapore Polytechnic. During the workshop, students grasped basic techniques of the cajon, and also learnt and worked together as a class to perform drumming patterns with accompanying music. The cajon workshop also enhanced their coordination, memorisation and observation skills when they demonstrated their learning by performing a song together at the end. 2023 Enrichment Workshop for Secondary 2 The Secondary 2 students attended an enrichment workshop where they learnt how to dance. During the workshop, students built their confidence and teamwork as a class while they grasped basic techniques of hip hop, one of the most popular dance forms these days. In addition, learning the dance moves also allowed students to enhance their coordination, memorisation and observation skills, and demonstrate their learning by presenting a mini dance showcase together at the end. 2023 Aesthetics Learning Journeys for all levels In line with West Spring’s emphasis on holistic education, our school embarked on the annual series of external learning journeys with the aim of introducing our students to various forms of aesthetics and performing arts. Through these, they apply concepts of nutrition and make informed choices as consumers. Students modified a base recipe and created their very own savoury muffins suitable for a fundraising event. In addition, they created advertisements to promote their muffins. Secondary 2 FCE students were introduced to Food Science Investigation where students carried out food experiments and evaluated the outcomes of batters made using different types of flour. They applied their knowledge of scientific principles during food preparation and the cooking of batters. • Secondary 2 FCE students learned to appreciate the diversity of food from different cultures in Singapore and around the world. Students presented their research through Show and Tell. • Upper Secondary NFS students were presented with authentic learning experiences where they related and applied real life experiences through given scenarios. This helped students to understand the concept of nutrients and meal planning for various age groups. One of the highlights for students was to be purposefully immersed in the rich narratives presented in the National Museum of Singapore, exploring stories of people in Singapore across generations and learning to appreciate the connections between the experiences of past communities and their own lived experiences. Geographical Investigation (GI) The GI fieldwork experience spurred our lower secondary students to go beyond the classroom to actively look for and gather data to address questions that are close to their hearts. Students enjoyed the hands-on outdoor learning at Pang Sua Pond where they applied fieldwork skills. Our students participated in a mock committee session on nuclear proliferation, simulating what students can expect at regular Model UN conferences. Questioning has a crucial role in the process of learning as it stimulates and maintains interest and encourages our students to think and focus on the content. This was also important in building their confidence. The Secondary One and Two Higher Chinese students attended a four to six weeks journalism programme and news production workshop respectively. Mother Tongue Language Fortnight (MTLF) To encourage students to speak their mother languages and understand their own culture, the Chinese and Malay Languages units prepared a two- week programme for all students. Cultural Performance Exposure Scheme (CPES) In conjunction with our school’s efforts to promote interest in and continual learning of Chinese Language and Culture, the Chinese Language Department brought the Secondary 1 students for a skit titled《包小龙捉贼 记》performed by Singapore Hokkien Huay Kuan Arts & Cultural Troupe. It was an interactive skit where students participated during part of the skit. Conversational Chinese and Malay Program (CCM) The purpose of this programme was to help students acquire the languages that would enable them to communicate and understand our counterparts better. Malay students learnt basic conversational Chinese while the Chinese students learnt basic conversational Malay. With this programme, we hope that students will be able to bond better with their friends! Malay Language and Cultural Immersion Programme The annual Language and Cultural Immersion Programme organised by the ML Unit not only aims to instil the love for the Malay culture and tradition through interesting activities, but also provides a platform for the Secondary 1 students and teachers to build positive rapport as they get to know each other. This year, students visited the last surviving kampong in Singapore, Kampong Lorong Buangkok, and participated in activities such as basket weaving and roti kirai making while exploring the sights and sounds of nature. The value of such competition is about forging friendships when a team is formed and challenged to work towards a common goal. In line with our Learning for Life Programme, students demonstrated sportsmanship, teamwork, and resilience. It was heartening to see that our students were gracious in victory and resilient in defeat. Sports Leaders assisted the teachers as umpires, scorekeepers, timekeepers, and line judges. West Spring Cross-Country Run @ Sports Hub As part of our continuing efforts to promote healthy lifestyle, West Spring Cross Country @ Sports Hub was successfully concluded on 19 May. With an attendance rate of 95%, students and staff enjoyed the positive and meaningful experience. The inclusive event allowed both competitors and non-competitors to participate and complete the route in a safe manner. Even parents joined their children in the event to show their support for the event. Sec 1 Cohort Camp The Secondary 1 students had a fruitful and meaningful learning experience during the 3D2N camp. One of the key ingredients to the success was the active involvement of the Form Teachers during camp to strengthen the camaraderie and bonds between students and teachers. The trainers played a great role in easing the students into the rugged camp environment. With basic amenities, the students interacted well with the trainers and participated well during the activities. The support and encouragement for one another was clearly evident during the camp. Get Active! Singapore Workout 2023 GASG is an initiative by ActiveSG to celebrate our nation’s birthday through sports. This year we have engaged the Sec 3 cohort to learn the new steps for Dance of the Nation as part of supporting the national initiative. Furthermore, we have involved our Student Councillors to participate in Seniors’ Sports Day @ GetActive! Singapore on 3 August 2023. We hosted Seniors from the Precious Active Ageing Centre (Sunshine Gardens @ Choa Chu Kang). The seniors taught our students how to play Kampung Games while our students taught them how to do Dance of the Nation. The meaningful activity is meant to promote intergenerational bonding through modified sports. Experiential Learning Programme This year, students were involved in a variety of activities to further enhance their learning experiences. The Secondary One students were engaged in Laser Tag, Escape Room and Street Dance. The Street dance culminated into a showcase where the students had to perform a routine they were taught by the instructors. Our Secondary Two students thoroughly enjoyed their sessions in bowling, dragon boating and team building activities.
