PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

Our new Vision and Mission to inspire our students to be future-ready
In Semester 2 of 2018, the school community went through an envisioning exercise to review
our key school directions to meet future work demands. After much deliberation, we decided
to change the school vision to “Ladies and Gentlemen of Character and Learning” and our
school mission to “Shaping Characters, Engaging Learners, Touching Lives”.

To ensure that our students become “Ladies and Gentlemen of Character and Learning”, the
school has refocused our efforts into three strategic thrusts namely, “Character Excellence”,
“Learning Excellence” and “Staff Excellence”.

Strategic Thrust 1 “Character Excellence” seeks to help each West Spring student to become
a Responsible and Caring Leader who is willing to serve the community. While it is important
to ensure that every student has unwavering and sound moral values, there is an urgent
need to equip them with leadership skills too. Hence, the school has developed our Student
Leadership Programme into a simpler and more pervasive one, TLC “Take Charge, Lead by
Example, and Communicate”. This new framework will provide leadership development for
all Lower Secondary Students as well as more leadership opportunities such that all students
will graduate with at least “Level 3” for Leadership.

Strategic Thrust 2 “Learning Excellence” seeks to ensure that every West Spring student
becomes a Resilient and Self-Directed Learner who is able to progress to the next phase of
their education. The school continues to design and conduct engaging learning experiences for
our students so that every West Spring student experiences joy in learning. To this end, each
academic department has begun to develop and deploy an effective pedagogy. For example,
the English Department uses Making Thinking Visible, the Humanities uses Inquiry-Based
Learning while the Mathematics Department leverages Questioning Technique.

To ensure that our Strategic Thrust 3 “Staff Excellence” seeks to develop both our teaching and non-teaching
students become “Ladies staff to effectively deliver our student character and learning outcomes. Our staff continues
and Gentlemen of to engage in learning and development activities both within and beyond the school. This will
Character and Learning”, ensure that our staff develop an outward mindset so as to ensure continuous improvements.
the school has refocused
our efforts into three A choice school that improves continuously
strategic thrusts namely, Recently, MOE named West Spring Secondary as one of the few schools to pilot Full-Subject-Based
“Character Excellence”, Banding, a major educational initiative. The school has also undergone many improvements
“Learning Excellence” to encourage our students and staff to “Learn for Life”. Examples include the introduction of
and “Staff Excellence”. Assessment for Learning, removal of Mid-Year Examinations for some levels, Applied Learning
Programme and Learning for Life Programme. It is heartening that the school has continued
Principal to be a choice school in Bukit Panjang.
Mr Adolphus Tan
Here at West Spring we will achieve!
Let us continue to aspire to improve and achieve greater heights for our students and community!
As we sing our school song, we are reminded that:
Here, we will be winners
Here, we will achieve
Here, with soul and spirit
‘Cause here, At West Spring we believe!

SAC CHAIRMAN’S MESSAGE

For The Love Of Learning

The Holy Grail of being a teacher must certainly be when a student is imbued with the Love
of Learning long after the student has completed formal schooling. Very often as students
and as teachers, we are so caught up with getting the results that we miss the whole point of
education, which really is to teach us to savour the most out of life. With knowledge, we are
not only equipped with the ability to make a living and to navigate the vicissitudes that life
throws at us, but more importantly to appreciate the wonders that life has to offer to us. It is,
therefore, very sad when instead of developing a Love for Learning, the student leaves school
abhorring the pursuit of knowledge.

I therefore welcome the introduction of Full-Subject-Based Banding.

“Streaming” in itself has been such a taboo topic. It has been the target of much brickbat since
its introduction in 1981. But I suppose at that stage in the development of our education system,
the priority was to reduce the high drop-out rate. Although it was not a perfect system, it did
achieve the objective. With the introduction of Full-Subject-Based Banding, there is hope of
removing the negative effects of “Streaming”.

We are honoured that West This flexibility of allowing students to select the difficulty level for core subjects such as
Spring has been chosen as English Language, Mathematics, Science and Humanities, is certainly a move in the right
one of the 28 schools for direction because it recognises that every student and child is unique. And really, in life it is
the pilot project which will not necessary to be strong in both the sciences and in the humanities. In this day and age, it
be rolled out in 2024. is more important to be a specialist rather than a generalist. As I always tell my kids, you just
need to be the top 2% in whatever you do, whether you are a magician, or a ‘mee pok’ seller,
SAC Chairman or a golfer or a teacher. And invariably you will be the top 2% if you are doing something that
Mr Leslie Yeo you really like and are good at. Subject-based learning will certainly achieve that.

We are honoured that West Spring has been chosen as one of the 28 schools for the pilot
project which will be rolled out in 2024. Let’s make the most out of it. In particular, we need
every stakeholder on board, certainly the teachers, the School Advisory Committee and most
importantly the parents. Parents, you are and will always be the students’ first and primary
educator. For this initiative to be successful, all stakeholders will need to have a fundamental
change in mindset because now the focus is on the child and not on the result.

So here we go on this exciting ride. All hands onboard!

PARENTS SUPPORT GROUP

The West Spring Parents’ Support Group organises
a variety of activities to engage parents and children
together. Such activities include workshops and talks
and outdoor adventure activities.
This year, parents and children had great fun competing
with one another in the Laser Tag activity, organised by
the school under the Father Programme Activity. This
activity was held on a Saturday morning on 30 March
with more than 30 parents and children participating.
Various mini competitions were set-up. Some had
parent-child pairs competing amongst one another.
Another competition was between parents and their
children and the third competition was the parents
themselves who competed against one another. This
Laser Tag activity not only fostered greater bonding
between the parents and their children, it also created
opportunities for everyone to communicate with one
another effectively and at the same time built resilience
in the competitors. At the end of the morning, everyone
was exhausted but happy as it was a morning well spent
with the family.

CARING FOR THE COMMUNITY - OUR
MIGRANT WORKERS

These are various Values-in-Action activities
that the school organises for the students to
contribute back to the community. Students
participated in various activities that encourage
them to give back to the society. These places
were Fei Yue Senior Activity Centre, Dementia
Friendly Community at Pacific Healthcare
Nursing Home and Peer Tutoring at Delta
Senior School. Our secondary two students
also learned about the migrant workers that
have contributed much to the building of
Singapore’s infrastructure during an assembly
talk. Our students learned about resilience,
interdependence, compassion, empathy for
others and being thankful for all that they have.

NOVEMBER 2019

Selected student leaders get the chance to
serve a small Cambodian community overseas
during their mid-year and year-end break.
Project Touching Hearts (PTH) is West Spring
Secondary’s signature bi-annual Values-
in-Action overseas programme. Almost 24
Secondary Two and Three students commit
themselves to a 6-day community service
project with Tapich Primary School in Siem
Reap, Cambodia. Not only do our students
engage the children there in fun lessons and
games, they also work together with the locals
to construct a waste incinerator, de-grass and
clean the school area. Persevering through
the hard work, PTH is an enriching, thought-
provoking and enlightening experience for our
students who learn about resilience, empathy
and leadership.

OUR BICENTENNIAL EXPERIENCE AT FORT
CANNING CENTRE

2019 marks the 200th anniversary of Sir
Stamford Raffles’ arrival in Singapore. It is
definitely a key milestone in our rich history.
On the 17th of July, selected students from
the secondary one classes went on a learning
journey to the Bicentennial Experience at the
Fort Canning Centre. Students went through a
multimedia sensory experience that brought
them back in time to witness key moments in
Singapore’s transformation from as far back as
1299. They learnt more about which countries
our forefathers came from, how they came to
settle here and the reasons for choosing to
make Singapore their home. Most importantly,
students learnt that every single one of us is,
in some way, interconnected with others in
this history and they also learnt to explore
how our past has formed us and our country
to what it is today.
