ECMA Activities 2016 - overview per quarter
In 2016 ECMA again organised many internal member meetings. The different committees and forums play
an important role within the structure of ECMA. Being able to participate within the committees and forums
in ECMA is an important benefit for direct members of ECMA, and provides great added value. Members can
directly influence decision making, receive first-hand information and have many networking opportunities.

ECMA ANNUAL CONGRESS 2017
The ECMA Annual Congress will take place on 20 and 21 September 2016
in Salzburg, Austria. The congress theme will be: ‘When Cartons Matters’.
Salzburg’s ‘Old Town’ (Altstadt) is internationally renowned
for its baroque architecture and is one of the best-preserved
city centres north of the Alps. The Old Town is picturesquely
surrounded by the Mönchsberg, crowned by the Fortress
which is visible for miles, and the mighty Capuchin Mountain
on the right banks of the river. Salzburg was the birthplace
of 18th-century composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
so there is music in the air and the spirit of Mozart is
accompanying you almost step by step.
The ECMA Marketing & Communications Committee is
working on the programme and as soon as more information
is available all members will be informed. Please mark
your calendar for the third week of September and we look
forward to meeting you in Salzburg!

CREATIVE CARTONBOARD PACKAGING WINNER
I Have Nuts®: Isabel Laugerud Tabarini
Jury Comments: In the first instance this is a very attractive pack,
structurally and graphically. But coupled to that is the marketing
concept of nutrition for athletes where balanced nutrition is
provided in each half the pack to be consumed pre and post activity.
This concept is well executed by the pack design. So much so that
the whole could even be marketable and commercialised.
CREATIVE CARTONBOARD IDEAS WINNER
Off The Hook: Sarah Strobl
Jury Comments: Whilst this concept of a clothes hanger might
need some development, the judges really appreciated the thought
of the idea, particularly as a quantity of the hangers are attached
to each other and as many can be separated as needed according
to the strength needed according to the clothing item. Simple and
effective.
PUBLIC VOTING WINNER
Paper Bow Tie: Franz Mühringer
The idea was to create a bow tie out of a single piece of carton
which fits onto an A4 sheet with no sticking necessary. The product
should be an invitation to the next Pro Carton event. In addition it
could be sold as an accessory or to advertise shirts in a store.

He commented:
‘I’m delighted to be leading Pro Carton and am confident that
by working alongside my colleagues at ECMA we can drive
further beneficial change for our industry. We all know that
cartons are the most sustainable form of packaging but we
need to spread the message even wider, and with a bit more
vigour, to make people act differently and actively disfavour
materials that are less sustainable. We need to highlight the
positives that cartons offer but also make comparisons with
other materials. In this way I hope that packaging specifiers
and legislators will positively discriminate in favour of
materials that abide by the principle of the circular economy
and against materials that harm our world. But we need to
act together. We have well over 50,000 people working in the
European carton industry, think what we could do if we can
harness that power to communicate our message! Wave the
banner. Remember, cartons don’t create plastic waste.’
