JFSA’S BOARD OF DIRECTORS
WOULD LIKE TO EXTEND A SPECIAL THANK

YOU TO:

Dr. Kenneth
Moskowitz, PH.D.

President and CEO

FOR YOUR HARD WORK AND COMMITMENT TO OUR AGENCY.
WE ARE INCREDIBLY GRATEFUL THAT UNDER YOUR LEADERSHIP,
JFSA IS THRIVING AND ABLE TO SERVE MORE OF THOSE IN NEED

IN OUR COMMUNITY THAN EVER BEFORE!

JFSA CEO MESSAGE

On behalf of JFSA, I want to thank each of you for joining us as we
celebrate our 13th Annual Tzedakah Event. This year’s brunch honors
Barbara Raben and Michael Naft, who, selflessly, give to help
improve the lives of so many in our community. Congratulations!

It is the mission of JFSA to protect the vulnerable, strengthen families
and empower individuals. We are blessed with an incredible staff
and a wide variety of programs. This allows us to help those in need
in our Community using a case management approach. Our team
works with each client and their families to identify and address
specific challenges and takes a holistic approach in order to give
them the assistance they need to get back on their feet.

This past year JFSA was able, with your help and multiple grants
from Jewish Nevada, Claims Conference, Private Entities and County,
State, and Federal Government, to assist over 17,000 community
members with Adoption, Counseling, Senior Services, Emergency
Assistance, Food Pantry and Assessment and Educational services!

Every service we provide changes someone’s future. Every bill we
pay, every gift card we give out, every counseling session is a step
towards hope, renewal and healing. We hope that you will assist us
by providing a direct contribution to improving their lives. And to all
of our stalwart supporters, my heartfelt thanks for your continued
support.

Thank you,
Kenneth Moskowitz, Ph.D.

JFSA’S BOARD OF DIRECTORS
WOULD LIKE TO EXTEND A SPECIAL THANK

YOU TO:

Laura Sussman

Board Chair
FOR YOUR HARD WORK AND COMMITMENT TO OUR

AGENCY!

JFSA BOARD CHAIR MESSAGE

Thank you very much for being part of JFSA’s 13th Annual Tzedakah
Event and our first virtual event.

This year has been unlike any other. Your support of JFSA indicates your
concern for others in our community. The funds raised through this event help
to enrich the lives of individuals in need. Whether through providing food,
transportation, counseling, educational assistance, adult care management,
adoption services, a friendly check-in call, or most importantly this year,
emergency assistance, JFSA has touched over 17,000 people this year
alone, enriching their lives.

Thank you to our CEO, Dr. Ken Moskowitz, and his incredible staff for their
hard work and dedication to the JFSA mission. They have taken the agency
to new heights during this past year, stepping up to meet the challenges the
COVID pandemic has created. While other social service agencies in the
community have scaled back or shut their doors, JFSA has expanded
programs and services to provide essential support to our community.

Today we are honoring Barbara Raben and Commissioner Michael Naft.
Much of JFSA’s success is a result of the commitment and involvement of
these two leaders. Barbara stepped up to steer the agency when we were
at one of lowest points. She recruited others to get involved and set the
course for JFSA’s success. Michael has been a tremendous resource in helping
JFSA to identify opportunities for governmental support, allowing us to
expand services to our community.

Thank you and congratulations to this year’s event committee, chaired by
Ercy Rosen and Lisa Bassewitz. Creating our first virtual event was quite an
undertaking and it is truly appreciated.

I hope you will join my family in donating today to ensure the financial
future of JFSA and allow us to continue to serve the greater Las Vegas
community for years to come.

Thank you again for making a difference in our community!

L’Shalom,
Laura Sussman
Board Chair

COVID-19 UPDATE

During the COVID pandemic, JFSA has continued to
operate and meet the growing demand for assistance in
our Community.

FOOD PANTRY
Since March, our Food Pantry has assisted over 5,600
individuals. We helped 1,400+ in June and 1,700+
individuals in July, a 100% increase over our pre-COVID
monthly average of 800 individuals per month..

EMERGENCY ASSISTANCE
Our Emergency Assistance Program provided assistance with
rent, utilities and other emergency needs to 350+
individuals in the months of June and July. We are
averaging 350+ calls a day, requesting help with these
much-needed services and continue to process and assist
people as quickly as possible. We expect these calls to
continue to increase.

COUNSELING
Our Counseling Program has seen a large increase in
requests for assistance. Due to demand, we recently began
an online bereavement group to those who have lost a loved
one due to the virus.

COVID-19 UPDATE

SENIOR SERVICES
Services to our Seniors continues. Each month, JFSA delivers
meals, food packages and PPE to our Holocaust survivors
and other needy seniors in our community through our

Through JFSA’s programs, we are able to stay connected to
those in our community that are vulnerable, isolated, and in
need of reassurance that they are not alone.

Your continued support of JFSA has allowed us to meet these
demands. Through your financial and food donations, and

BIOGRAPHY

"I was brought up in a family that believed that you have an obligation to give back to your community. I believe in the
concept of L’Dor V’Dor, from generation to generation, and hope to pass along my love of being Jewish, and doing Jewish,

to my children and grandchildren." Barbara Raben

Barbara Shulman, born to Adele and Kermit Shulman, was raised in Stamford, Connecticut, and
attended Fairleigh Dickinson University in Teaneck, New Jersey before getting married and moving to
London for a year. With husband Richard Grisar, she moved to Los Angeles and in 1991, raised their
four sons and owned a candy making business. After sixteen years in southern California she, Richard
and the children moved to Las Vegas.

In 1995 Barbara was suddenly widowed. Finding her inner strength, and with the support offered by
her friends and community, she and her sons moved forward. She often shares that she became
aware of the work of JFSA during this difficult time in her life. After searching for family grief
counseling for her family, she found that JFSA was the only agency to offer what they needed.
Barbara says that JFSA gives me the chance to volunteer on a local level, and a chance to give back to
the community.”

In 2004, Barbara married longtime Las Vegan Terry Raben. Together they share what they call
“bonus” children. Barbara is mother to Marc, Michael, Andrew and David Grisar and grandmother to
Riley, Kameron, Ethan and Emma. With Terry's children Neal Raben, and Holly and Kevin Chidester
and grandson Scott, and their extended family and friends, they enjoy all the activities of a busy
family. “I am happily retired,” said Barbara, “and doing what I love best - volunteering my time and
energy.”

GREETINGS FROM THE GOVERNOR

August 30, 2020

As Governor of the State of Nevada, it is my pleasure to welcome you to the Jewish
Family Service Agency’s (JFSA) 13th Annual and 1st virtual Tzedakah Event. First
Lady Kathy Sisolak and I would like to extend our sincerest appreciations to those
involved in organizing this virtual event to ensure the safety of our fellow Nevadans.

For more than 40 years, the JFSA has provided comprehensive social support to those
in need. By providing services such as counseling, education, services for seniors,
emergency assistance, and adoption, they truly embody the Jewish principle of
“Tikkun Olam,” repairing the world one life at a time. This annual event provides an
opportunity to recognize the great work of this organization and all of those who
support their efforts. Kathy and I commend the JFSA for their ongoing service to the
community.

Kathy and I are proud to congratulate this year’s honorees, Barbara Raben, the former
Chair of JFSA for her ongoing support of JFSA and those in need, and Michael Naft,
our friend and Clark County Commissioner, who is this year’s recipient of the
Community Hero Award. Kathy and I thank them for their continuous dedication to
this cause.

Again, I welcome you to this virtual event and offer my best wishes for a memorable
day.

Sincerely,

Governor Steve Sisolak
State of Nevada

those in our community and Clark County Commissioner Michael Naft
for receiving the Community Hero Award. I am proud to recognize
these honorees for their extraordinary contributions to Nevada.

During these challenging times, it is so important for us to find new ways for us to come
together as a community. Thank you to the Jewish Family Service Agency for hosting this
virtual event and to each of you for supporting their efforts to provide much-needed services to

Dear Friends,

It is m pleasure to elcome ou to the Je ish Famil Service Agenc s (JSFA) Thirteenth
Annual Tzedakah Brunch honoring former JFSA Board Chair Barbara Raben and Clark County
Commissioner Michael Naft. I wish we could be together in person, but I am glad that we get to
come together virtually to honor these outstanding leaders and support this critical organization.

Barbara Raben has been an advocate and volunteer in Southern Nevada s Je ish communit for
nearly three decades, guiding some of our most important institutions. In addition to her role as
the former Chairwoman of JFSA, Barbara was the President of the Desert-Mountain Region of
Hadassah and served on the Governor s Advisor Council on Education Related to the
Holocaust. She is also a contributor to the Southern Nevada Jewish Community Digital Heritage
Project at UNLV.

Michael Naft has served as the Clark County Commissioner for District A since January of 2019.
He was the District Director for my office in Las Vegas from 2012 2019, and I have known
him since he was a student at UNLV. I can attest to his religious devotion, his compassion for
others, and his determination to make Southern Nevada a better place for us all. He has taken the
lead during these difficult times on projects ranging from homelessness to public safety.

Let us honor them both through our charity to the causes supported by the Jewish Family Service
Agency. Please do not hesitate to call if I can be of service; and once it is safe, if you find
yourself in Downtown Las Vegas or Washington, D.C., come by our office anytime.
