John Buttrick was a lesser known economist who had met, when he
was an undergraduate at Columbia University, the poet Rabindranath
Tagore. This was the nineteen thirties and the poet was on a short
visit to New York City. Buttrick was entrusted with the task of showing
the poet around. There was a standard route to follow. But Buttrick,
being young, over-enthusiastic, and keen to leave an impression on the
poet, suggested an unusual route which involved some additional effort
in terms of walking and running but was sure to save seven-eight

“BARANTI”

Baranti , a small hamlet in the district of Purulia in West Bengal, did not find a place in tourist map till recently. However, its
undulating topography, green hilltops, sprawling waterbody and rustic ambience catch fancy of travelers now-a-days ostensibly to
get respite from hustle-bustle of city life.

Instead of going by road, it is better to avail Ranchi Satabdi express from Howrah to reach Asansol by about ten in the morning
and then get a car hired from Asansol station to reach Baranti within two hours. If requested, local lodges at Baranti also arrange
car to pick up and drop at Asansol against payment of charges. There are good many lodges and resorts at Baranti where one can
stay comfortably.

Baranti is famous for sunset on Muradi dam. It is pleasing to walk down the ‘red road (laterite road) from resort to dam in late
winter afternoon under basking sun. As the sun sets in, the sky, the water and the fieeting clouds get coloured in crimson. The
shadows of hills behind go on elongated minute by minute. The floating fishing boats crisscross rays of slanting sun on water giving
a picturesque view.

Another attraction of Baranti is tribal villages which are worth visiting. Impeccably neat and clean, the outside walls of houses are
decorated with drawing and design (alpana). Those are well maintained with all facilities. It is apparent that people are more or
less well off. They are simple, cordial and hospitable.

Walk through the forest in the morning or evening is a refreshing experience. No sound, no crowd-only chirping of birds and
receding sound of passing vehicles along the road a bit far off. It is almost a degraded forest; but whatever little still left is feast of
eyes.

At the end , excuse me for being a little personal. During our stay at Baranti, one morning we woke up with fog all around. It was
so dense that everything was blurred. Nothing was visible at 2 feet distance. We kept sitting on the balcony for hours till t he light
dawns. It was 10.30 by then. It was a rare experience for us calcuttans.

If interested, one may also visit Raghunathpur(19km),Joychandi hill(21km),Panchet Dam(30km) and Shushunia Hill(40km).

The Lowering of the Flag Ceremony at Wagah Border

Before start writing, I would like to confess that I am not a “Writer”. Actually I want to share mesmerizing event with all of you.
The Wagah Border Ceremony, located on the highway between Amritsar and Lahore, is definitely something I have never seen
before.

It was sunny morning on Sunday 25th December, 2017. After the lunch, we started our journey to our destination - the Wagah-
Attari Border at 1:30 p.m., which is around 30 km from Amritsar. As our Hotel Manager advised us to reach the place as early as
possible to get a good position to see the “Lowering of the Flag Ceremony”, we were in a big hurry. While seeing lots of other
cars, buses, Autos and other vehicles marching towards the same direction, I was little tensed.

Fortunately, we have reached the Wagah Border within one hour. Along with hundreds of other people, we walked from where
the vehicle dropped us into the main area. It is an oval area with concrete steps for people to sit and a huge gate cutting through
the middle. There are separate entrance/security checking for Male and Female. BSF Jawans guided us towards the Gallery.
Entering towards the gallery, we have seen there are two gates, dividing the two countries India and Pakistan. We had taken our
seat in the Gallery. The galleries were overcrowded in the Indian Side. Spectators of both nations, were waving National flags.

In the music system, some patriotic songs were playing. A BSF Jawan in White uniform, was instructing us with expressions
(obviously joking) that we had to shout as loud as possible, to frighten the Pakistani Soldiers and we had acted accordingly i.e.
“Hindustan Zindabad!” and so that the Pakistani Soldiers can feel that “we, Indians are more powerful”. It was a great fun. Some
children and female spectators performed dance, too.

At 4:15 p.m. the show started with a parade by the soldiers of both side. There was action with loud shouts of 'Bharat Mata Ki
Jai’ in the mike and mesmerized crowd shouted 'Jai' in high decibels. In this ceremony team, two female soldiers were also
present. In background, the band of BSF Jawans started to play the band music. After the festive atmosphere, Beating the Retreat
ceremony began and the BSF soldiers marched the typical way with kicking legs unusually high. It was a grand parade and there
was cheering and high patriotic feeling on both sides of the border gate. When the parade came to an end, the Indian BSF soldiers
and Pakistani Rangers open the gates, meet and greet each other and the two flags were lowered simultaneously. The flags were
folded and then the gates of two countries closed again. The drill was magnificent, specially the high leg kick. This ceremony is
famous in the name “Beating Retreat” border ceremony.

At the end of the ceremony, we were moved towards our hotel with a great experience and thought that we are in safe hands……….

“Indian vs. Western Management”

Most corporate theories that we have learned are from western school of management which has its source in their
own society, culture and anthropology. It had its long history where people felt they were enslaved, deprived of their
rights to realize the vision of the Promised Land.

While for Indian perspective, we never had any system of management but an organized business of families or
communities. It was a collective get together of traders and skilled professionals, mostly community based.

Peter Senge, who had coined the term "Learning organisation" has said that Indian and Chinese business can never
beat this international competition without reconnecting to their own heritage. They need to build the confidence that
they can do it as Indians or as Chinese. They have learned a lot from them but they can't create an Indian/Chinese
version of western model and succeed. Western model is anyways bankrupt as it has throwed away the human side of
development.

One of the best thing that I have learned in this 1.5 months of WBIDFC is to call, for example Mr. Samiran Mukherjee
as Samiranda. From a western perspective, this may seem as being too personal and hence a distraction from their
professional objective and individual personal life. Although from an Indian perspective this may seem as a sense of
belongingness to a larger family united for a common purpose. Our highest goal is continuous adjustment and
settlement of our common purpose along with changing times and through this we learn our external environment
and most importantly who we really are as a human being.
