In this chapter, we will learn to communicate activities in progress at the time of
speaking, at one point of time in the past, and at one point of time in the future, in
order:

 To share the information with others
 To give an explanation

PART 1. PRESENT CONTINUOUS TENSE
Read the dialogue below.

Taken from English book- Think Globally Act Locally

When we want to communicate activities in progress at the time of speaking, we
use Present Continuous Tense. Present Continuous Tense is also called as Present
Progressive Tense. From the dialogue above, the words in bold (is staying, am
studying) are the examples of Present Continuous Tense.

A. The structure of Present Continuous Tense
The sentences above using Present Continuous Tense. The activities are
happening at the time of speaking. There are two structures of Present
Continuous Tense, Verbal dan Nominal.
1. Verbal
(+) Subject + is/ am/ are + Verb-ing + Object + Adverb.
(-) Subject + is/ am/ are + not + Verb-ing + Object + Adverb.
(?) Is/ Am/ Are + Subject + Verb-ing + Object + Adverb?

B. The time signals of Present Continuous Tense
The time signals or adverbs of time used in Present Continuous Tense are:
 Now
 Right now
 At present
 At the moment
 Today
 Still

For activities that are temporal habits, the time signals used are:

 This week
 This month
 This year
 This week
 etc

C. The examples of Present Continuous Tense
1. Regan is working in the garden now.
2. The students are finishing their assignments at this moment.
3. I am taking my meals.
4. Ryan is not watching Karate Kids, he is watching Jumanji.
5. We are at home now, we are very tired after full day trip.

PART 2. PAST CONTINUOUS
Take a look at the sentence in the picture below:

The sentence “I was learning English for 2 hours yesterday” uses Past Continuous
Tense. Past Continuous Tense is also called as Past Progressive Tense.
We use Past Continuous Tense to show an action that was in progress at some
specific time in past.

sitting and chatting. They said they were waiting for us.”
Beni: "In fact, they were not just waiting for us. They were also waiting for our

something happened. The past continuous refers to the longer event and the
