Here to help you through difficult times
Along with many others I have been bitten by the family

MARY MAY GUNN

Mary May Gunn, nee White, was born on the 13th
May 1925 in Dunfermline, Fife, Scotland to parents
Mary and Robert White. Mary had 5 Brothers and 3
Sisters - 5 which sadly are no longer with us but leaves
2 sisters, Violet & Irene, and also brother Oliver, all of
which live in Scotland. Violet was able to journey down
to be with Mary's family at this time of sadness.

When Mary was small her parents had a
sweetshop in New Road Dunfermline. They moved
when her father became a pig farmer on White Law
Farm. Mary spent her holidays with her aunts and uncles
in Perth.

On leaving school Mary worked in Rosyth Dock
Yard in the offices, delivering mail or documents,
sometimes having to go onto ships that were docked in
the shipyard. When the work shut down in 1947 Mary
had a chance to travel down to England with several
friends to Letchworth where she worked for a firm called
Spirrella's and lived in a hostel in Baldock.

It was whilst working at Spirella’s that Mary met
Ern. They used to go out for dates on Ern’s motorbike.
Mary stayed down in England for about a year, she then
had to return to Scotland but Ern visited for holidays and
they got engaged in 1949. Not long after Mary moved
back down to England and they married on March 21st
1950.

They first lived with Ern's parents before getting
their own home together at Hatfield Broad Oak. In 1958
they moved to Hatfield Heath where they lived until
1991.

Mary had 3 Children - Robert, Ian and Isobel.
Neighbours would laugh when Mary called the children
home as the way she would call their names sounded
tuneful. There are also seven grandchildren ranging from
1 to 21 years old.

As well as being a full time mother Mary worked
as a domestic helper within the village and in her leisure
time enjoyed the women's village meeting groups such
as the URC Leisure Hour, the Women's Institute and
indoor bowling to name a few. Many members of
Hatfield Heath URC have fond memories of Mary
attending services as well as the leisure hour.

Mary also enjoyed catching up with family with
the yearly holiday back to Scotland as well as family
living around this area and also down south of Essex.
When she was at home Mary would be out every day
sitting on a seat chatting to everyone who passed.

Sadly Robert passed away in August of 1991. A
few months later Mary lost her husband, Ern, it was a
very traumatic time for the family. Now she was on her
own, Mary decided to move into a smaller property a
bungalow within the estate and then into a warden
assisted complex which was nearby.

In 2006 it became noticeable to her family that
Mary’s health was changing and after tests it was found
that Mary was suffering from Alzheimer's. Over the
period of approximately 2 years Mary’s health declined
and she then had to move into a residential care home in
Hertford in 2008.
20

Mary enjoyed the outing and activities and festival Special Event?
events that were there especially the Scottish themed ones.
She became quite a character with the members of staff Want to give a personal Gift?
especially showing them how to do the dancing. But as the A verse for any occasion.
years went by Mary’s health slowly deteriorated.
Bev Rogers 07796 493 453
Mary’s Health was made a further downward spiral
when it was found that she had a brain clot earlier this year www.wordways.net
and she had to go through a gruelling operation which
made her very weak. It became noticeable that her days CARPETS
with the family were diminishing.
CARPETS • VINYL •LAMINATE
Mary passed away on the 27th February 2010 aged •SUPPLIED & FITTED
84. Mary has now left our world but is now with Ern and
Robert starting a new life together and we know that she
will always be with us.

01279 730 544 I would like to see this group growing and enabling more
children to attend regularly but we can only do so with
your help. We cannot run the group hoping that someone
will turn up we need a commitment to being there on
specific dates so that we know how many children we can
allow in. Linda and I cannot commit to be there every
Friday as I have three other churches to look after and also
my role within the church will be changing in the near
future.
It would be a tremendous help if we could get two
additional people to help say once every six weeks,
making a total of 12. As the majority of the children are
girls at least one of the helpers each week needs to be
female. Please consider this carefully and get in touch with
