countryside and wealth of listed buildings somewhat
for granted, but visitors are usually surprised when they
discover the charm of our villages and small market
towns and the attractive countryside in which they sit.

AIM TO BECOME AS WELL-KNOWN AS THE
CHILTERNS OR

CONSTABLE COUNTRY, TO CHERISH IT
Until now, the area’s anonymity has probably been due
largely to the lack of a name, so we have created one
that we hope will eventually become as well-known as
the Chilterns or Constable Country. We have called the
area the Hundred Parishes to recognise that it contains
just over 100 administrative parishes, including
Hatfield Heath. Whilst the whole area enjoys a
recurring set of special characteristics, each parish has
its own identity. We hope that our initiative will
encourage both residents and visitors to learn more
about the area and will inspire them to explore and
cherish it.

We have launched a new website
www.hundredparishes.org.uk to explain the idea more
fully. It includes an introduction to each parish, a series
of walks from railway stations and a short introduction
to a number of notable people associated with the area.
The website shows regular events and local attractions
and there is a ‘What’s On’ page that lists opportunities
to learn more and to get to places that you may not
know.

The Society is a registered charity and the website
includes details of how to become a member for a
nominal subscription of £10 a year per family or
organisation. Whether or not you become a member,
we hope you will make regular use of our website and
that it will inspire you to increase your knowledge and
enjoyment of the Hundred Parishes.

White clawed crayfish are protected by the Wildlife Fri 9 am-6 pm
and Countryside Act and the Countryside Rights of
Way (CROW) Act. This means that a special Sat 9am-4pm
licence is required from Natural England to survey
for crayfish or to use crayfish traps. A Norfolk Bio
diversity Action Plan has been drafted by the
Environment Agency.

Our native crayfish have been severely affected by
the introduction of the non-native signal crayfish.
The signal crayfish was introduced to this country in
the early 1980’s for farming and commercial aqua
culture, but unfortunately many escaped and entered
our water courses. Signal crayfish grow up to twice
the size of white-clawed crayfish and are highly
aggressive, therefore out competing the smaller and
retiring native species by predation and direct
competition for food.

Some non-native crayfish can carry a fungus
(Aphanomyces astaci) commonly known as crayfish
plague, which does not affect them but can be lethal
for our native crayfish. Local warnings have been
given to all water users in the River Waveney area
regarding this crayfish plague following a recent
outbreak. The Environment Agency is advising the
public to clean any equipment with disinfectant,
bleach or anti-fungicidal products

Buck's Stores was founded by my parents in 1912
when they came from Tottenham to live at the Heath.
At that time a Miss Smith lived in the cottage, as it
was then, and sold odd things such as fruit and sweets
from the cottage window. The first shop opened by
my family was small and if half a dozen customers
came in, the place was overcrowded. Takings were
meagre and the early cash books showed that they
were often no more than a few shillings a day. I
arrived on the scene in 1912, being born in a bedroom
over the shop bordering on “the Stag”. Times were
hard during the 1914-18 war and I understand my
mother had me bathed, dressed, fed and watered
before 6.00 am each day. My father cycled to
Sawbridgeworth station at that hour, to fetch the
newspapers, sometimes after having worked all night
at Harlow, acting as a stretcher-bearer carrying the
wounded soldiers from the train to the hospital.

No holiday was possible for the first seven years, and
the only free days during the year were Christmas
Day and Good Friday, the only days when
newspapers were not published. My father and
mother refused to open for Sunday papers as that was
considered to be God's day of rest. How times have
changed!

The tale was told of the young men of the village Music Lessons

re-instate. Resident has been asked to keep a lookout
for who is responsible.

● Use of land of 11 acres behind The Shaw. All in
Metropolitan Green Belt. Access from 3 points. Develop-
er interested in providing a retirement village on the
land. This could also accommodate a new doctors sur-
gery and a better drop off point for children to the
school. SB said that the draft Local Plan for Uttlesford
does not allow for development within the Metropolitan
Green Belt. GW felt that it was unlikely that the develop-
ment would constitute an exception site. ML thanked the
landowner for talking to the parish council and advised
they should speak to UDC Planning Officer for further
guidance.

LANDFILL… PLEASE DO YOUR

BIT TO HELP REDUCE THIS

Recycling matters

Uttlesford District Council is pleased to be

MEMORIALS recognised as one of the best performing councils
for recycling in the country – but there is still far
more we can do.
Total waste per household is on the increase and
recycling rates are reducing. In Uttlesford we

throw away, into our black bin, on average 45% of

all the waste we produce.

Landfill costs are currently £80 a tonne and due to

increase further annually. So every tonne that is

J. Day & Son diverted from landfill delivers a saving.
What can you do to help?

· Try to buy goods with as little packaging
as possible.

· Reuse anything you can. Items such as
water bottles and glass jars can be reused

Station Road, Bishop’s Stortford for water and jam making. Old t-shirts can
be turned into dusters and good clothes/
books/ curtains donated to local charity

shops or collections. Your local vet may

welcome old towels and sheets.

· Ensure that the ‘largest bin’ in your
kitchen is the recycling bin, headed for

the green-lidded wheeled bin – into this

should go clean glass bottles and jars,

paper, newspaper, cardboard, tins and

drink cans, plastic bottles and food

containers. Additional waste can be left in

a cardboard box or clear carrier/plastic bag

next to your bin and will be collected.

13117 Aug 2014 P I am writing to see whether we can, as a group,
through our Village Magazine, form some sort of
Escape petition to protest against the appalling,
unacceptable noise we are experiencing due to the
L.V.L. LASHES AT ESCAPE flight diversion of planes from Stansted (i.e. the
Clacton route). I am sure it cannot only be me and

at 6am by low flying noisy aircraft which continues
on and off all day and into the night.

C WIRELESS ALARM SYSTEMS SSE SUPPORTS CALL TO TAKE PART IN
CCTV CAMERAS FLIGHT PATH CONSULTATION

ACCESS CONTROL Stop Stansted Expansion (SSE) welcomes NATS'
call to local residents to have their say and respond

Local engineer with 25yrs experience closes on 8th September.
NATS says that the proposed change would result
14033 Dec 14 in reduced CO2 emissions and reduced delays for

“Wendycot”,Chelmsford Road, Stansted and other airports. SSE has calculated that
Hatfield Heath, the reduction in CO2 emissions would be less than

routes came to Stansted. For delays, NATS'
Opening Hours performance in 2012 was the best on record with

1.6 seconds per flight.
Sat 9am - 1pm Traffic on the Clacton route would double if
this proposal were implemented and, according

living around the airport, 1,470 fewer people

www.jewhitemotors.co.uk overflown more intensively. NATS says that the
driver for change is network performance and to
avoid Heathrow traffic congestion. This currently
keeps Stansted's southbound Dover traffic lower in
the south of Essex, the Thames Estuary and
sometimes well into Kent.
SSE also draws attention to the fact that significant
changes to Stansted's airspace are likely to come in
the next airspace review phase scheduled for
2018/19. Additionally the Government is expected
to decide next year on a further runway in the
South East. These developments are anticipated to
involve a significant redesign of Stansted routes
including improved noise reduction procedures
such as Continuous Descent Approach.
SSE urged caution when this NATS consultation
was launched in mid-June and said that there must
be clear and compelling benefits for local residents
before any changes are implemented.
Peter Sanders, SSE's Chairman, says "SSE is not
convinced that these conditions have been met and
we recommend that NATS' proposed changes
should be postponed until they can be assessed in

how air war fair was being developed by the Germans.
Indiscriminate use of maroons prompted a change in
warning systems resulting in the use of sirens. It became
apparent that with numerous attacks coordination on a
greater scale was needed to effectively defend against
bombing. Brigadier Ashmore was responsible for creat-

The ‘Cloud Car’ on the Zeppelin was also a cause of
amusement. If the cloud base obscured the means to
navigate from the ground a ‘Cloud Car’ was lowered to
enable visual ground contact. No lack of volunteers for
the task as it provided a smoking opportunity for the
lucky person.

After the Gotha raids towards the end of the war came

from WW2 aptly named ‘Giant’.

Issues of the War and Brigade recruitment were
covered and there were predominantly two main fac-
tors which created cause and effect. 1. Less Men avail-
able as they were conscripted to the front and 2. Horses.
In one Village the Fire Brigade had none so that if a fire
occurred on a farm the Farmer provided his own horse!!

In conclusion there is recognition that what happened
in WW1 had a clear relevance to WW2 for planning,
organization, innovation and radical approaches.

Thanks to Mick for an interesting and informative
evening.

They left behind cuttings from trees and bushes they had probably cut from gardens of
people who had given them jobs in the area. The household waste went almost continuously
from one end of the field to the other, you name it, mattresses etc and when that was cleared
the fumigating team had to come to clear the human and animal faeces left behind .
