Dear Hatfield Heath Residents,
It is August 14th and there is now officially a drought but I do hope by the time that you are reading this
that things have cooled down a little and we have seen some rain. August is traditionally a quiet time for
Council as many staff are on leave and there are few official meetings. Time to catch up on e mails and
other correspondence which is, as usual mainly Highways related. In Hatfield Heath I am supporting the
Parish Council at looking, once again. at the possibility of re-aligning the Sawbridgeworth
Road junction and installing a mini roundabout at the Dunmow Road junction as well as
replacement Wig Wag signs at the school. These are all on a long list of District Wide
schemes that will be managed by the Local Highways Panel and currently at the verification
stage. The Parish Council has also reported a number of potholes to me and at the time or
writing I am still waiting for the ones at Lea Hall to be repaired. I can nominate a further 18
potholes in September so if you are aware of any bad ones please let me the precise location or preferably
What3words.
For your information Essex has just decided to host RideLondon once again next year and although the
route is undecided as yet, it will be coming to Uttlesford on May 28th 2023. I am aware that some
residents were affected by road closures this year and it is anticipated that these will be of a shorter
duration next time.
Once again I have some grant money available for Community Projects. We are asked to consider projects
of a “green” or “ well being” nature wherever possible.
If there are any issues where I can help please do get in touch.

Use your paper £20 and £50 notes by the end of September!
The Bank of England will be withdrawing legal tender
status of paper £20 and £50 banknotes after 30
September 2022.
While the majority of paper £20 and £50 banknotes in
circulation have been replaced with new polymer
versions, there are still over £6 billion worth of paper
£20 featuring the economist Adam Smith, and over £8
billion worth of paper £50 banknotes featuring the
engineers Boulton and Watt, in circulation.

With the recent record temperatures and lac o rain it is ust as well we are no longer
dependant on the village pump or water supply. Both our villages have a village pump that is
Grade 2 listed and noted as mid 1 th century age.
There is also a record o the pump borehole depth in the British Geological Survey Memoir The
Water Supply o Essex rom Underground Sources by Whita er and Thresh published in 1 16
available in Google boo s . Both records were provided by Mr George Ingold o Bishops
Stort ord who dug many local bores. He was a pump ma er and well sin er who inherited his
ather s business in 1 6 and died in 1 .
Hat eld Broad Oa village well at Cage End was bored in 1 2 to a depth o 2 eet .1m in
Boulder Clay deposits. There are also records or two wells on the Green and several outlying
arms. In 1 01 it notes there was a spring eeding three public standpipes in addition to the
wells.
In Hat eld Heath the village well was bored in 1 3 to a depth o 23 eet 6. m in Boulder Clay
deposits. There are also records or a private 20 deep well 6m or Mr Bowyer and at The
Brewery a well about 100 deep 30m . For both villages there would be many more private
wells as borne out by the number o wells pumps recorded by Fran Walsh in his 2013 boo
The Wells and Pumps o Hat eld Heath which lists 2 wells and 1 pumps copies available at
5 rom David Parish on 0 3 2 65 3 . This is a very avourable survival rate as Bishops
Stort ord Museum has an original pump on display but there is only one pump still in its original
location.
By 1 13 there was a piped water supply to the parish rom the mains o the Herts and Essex Co.
There are similar records o wells or the surrounding parishes o Great Hallingbury Little
Hallingbury and Matching.
Ad acent to the Hat eld Heath village pump is the village post box and that was yarn bombed at
the beginning o uly. Featuring Holy Trinity Church on the top and village activities it was un
to spot our society represented with our HRLHS initials ad acent to URC where we hold our
meetings.
A ter our summer brea we resume our meetings on Tuesday 20th September 2022 at .30pm
in the Hat eld Heath URC Church Hall. Our spea er is Patric Roberts returns to tal about
aspects o Oliver Rac ham s wor 1 3 -2015 . He was a Cambridge academic who
revolutionised the study o ecology management and development o the British countryside
especially trees woodlands and wood pasture. A proli c author one o his boo s is The Last
Forest The Story o Hat eld Forest .

litter in the bin will have seen quite a few moans and groans about litter on
and around the Heath. I along with three other Parish
Council appointed litter pickers en, ohn and anice all
do our best to keep our beautiful village looking clean and
tidy.
This past week Thursday Saturday 28th uly to 30th uly I
walked my round three evenings running and each time
collected at least half a sack of litter. On the Thursday a
lady, not an official litter picker , was also out with a bag
and picker collecting rubbish.
So dropping litter is becoming a big problem. Many of you,
probably the ones reading this , already take your rubbish
home but if you see people dropping litter, and you feel
safe to do it , please challenge these people.

ittering
I think we are all concerned about littering on the Heath and so have been following up on two main
things. Firstly we have an absolute promise from UDC that they will check litter bins on Mondays,
Wednesday and Fridays and empty when necessary. We will monitor this process from now on to
make sure that they do exactly as they promise. Secondly, we have our four litter pickers who try to
keep up with the casual littering around the village so hope that we will see swift improvement. We
will then decide if we need to add or change our litter bins themselves.
Dog mess
Congratulations to all of our dog owners in making the highways and byways so much better for us
all. There are two things which still need to be followed up on. Firstly, picking up is only half the job.
Please make sure to deposit what you have picked up into a bin rather than throwing bags into the
undergrowth, since unfortunately they do not decompose. Secondly we again have a promise from
UDC that they will empty dog litter bins on Fridays and we will be monitoring this as well as trying to
get extra bins so there is somewhere to deposit your bags.
- igel Robley
EEP R A D
Allison Ogden- ewton OBE, Chief Executive of eep
Britain Tidy, said “Anyone who owns a dog knows that
they should pick up after them and, with the massive
increase in dog ownership over the past two years, it has
never been more important for every owner to do the right
thing and clear up after their pet.
“In our new research with ou ov we also asked parents
of children aged four to 11 what would put them off taking
their children to the park and almost half of them 4
mentioned dog poo as a problem, at the same time as they
told us that a visit to the park made their children happier
88 and that it was a highlight of their day 2 .”
“Our wonderful parks and green spaces should be a safe
space for everyone to enjoy places we can all love - so
it s absolutely vital that dog owners are responsible and
bag their dog s poo and bin it.”

Many of us old timers doggedly refer to the village shops by their old name so for the record here is a
trip through the village in the 1 0 s.
As you approach via the Stortford Road on your right was Burtons Mill where you could buy corn and
meal to feed your chickens which many people did in those times, ext on the left was the Waggon
and Horses pub, run for over thirty years by Doris Dewar. On reaching the crossroads on your left was
Browns the baker - a shop but they also had two vans delivering bread around the area, If you took a
right turn down Pond Lane you would pass White s arage and petrol pumps. Then after the pond it
was Reynolds butchers shop run by us Reynolds with his sing songy voice and his wife Peggy. If
you carried on straight from the crossroads the next shop was Buttons in the ye olde beehive it was
run by immy Button who ran an ironmongers, delivered paraffin and repaired leather goods. ext to
them was the post office and general store it was called Peacocks after the family that ran it ably
assisted by Arther ent. Further along was the White Horse run by Harry and Irene Wickerson who
later purchased the next shop Bucks Stores a grocers and newsagents which was under the charge
of Ted ewman. Then it was the Stag pub landlords Eric and Mary Halls there was also a small
garage and petrol pumps and Eric also ran a coach business.the next shop was Butlers The butchers
shop was managed by Fred Reid with Peggy Austin his cashier the end premises was the Fox and
Hounds with mine hosts ladys and Alf Bonsey. They also ran a small cafe in a small building next
door. The final business was across the green, a small cobblers shop run by Frank Trundle. He
walked aided by crutches but was a craftsman and the shop always had a lovely smell of leather.

One pleasurable autumn task is the harvesting of ripened fruits from trees in your own
garden. For most of us, our cooking apple will be a Bramley s Seedling and the dessert apple
an Essex-bred Discovery or a Cox s Orange Pippin. Originating from central Asia, apples are
incredibly varied with at least 2,000 named varieties There are 1 0 named varieties in the
gardens at Audley End.
In the 1 th century the skilled horticulturalists at the Rivers ursery at Sawbridgeworth bred
and propagated many varieties of fruit trees, including the prolific C ar plum and Conference
pear, both of which are still available today. The Conference pear features in reat
Chesterford s 21st-century community orchard.
For commercial reasons, the range available from modern plant nurseries is limited to a few
easy-to-grow varieties. However, hidden away in forgotten corners of long-established
gardens within the Hundred Parishes there will be specimens of heritage varieties of orchard
trees. If you have a avoursome, but unidentified, variety, then the team at the East of
England Apples and Orchards Project would be delighted to hear from you.
Further information on https www.applesandorchards.org.uk
telephone 01328 838403 or email info applesandorchards.org.uk
There is something special about growing a unique or local variety, so if you wish to plant
heritage fruit trees specific to your own county, this organisation s catalogue lists a surprising
number of varieties for Essex, Hertfordshire or Cambridgeshire apples and pears, as well as
local plums, cherries and gages. This wide selection provides an opportunity to continue a
long tradition of choosing something rather special to enjoy eating in future years.
The Whats On page at www.hundredparishes.org.uk often displays local apple events, for
example at Rivers Orchard in Sawbridgeworth on September 4, 18 and 24 and at The
ardens of Easton Lodge on September 2 .
