13048 Jan - Dec 2013 Meryl Catty, who is well-known in the Hallingburys for
her history talks, but was last night making her debut in
MEMORIALS the Hatfields, gave a talk entitled DUDFINS LANGLES
AND SCUMMERS at the URC Hall (changed from St
J. Day & Son Mary's, HBO, because of the roof repairs). Meryl's talk
encouraged family historians to discover not only who
Station Road, Bishop’s Stortford our ancestors were, but also something about the lives
they led. This could be done in part by researching wills
Bishop’s Stortford 01279 654 555 and probate inventories. She began by saying that from
Edmonton 0208 807 3712 about the middle of the sixteenth century to the middle of
the eighteenth, it was the law that when a person died, an
www.jdayandson.co.uk inventory, with valuations, should be made of his/her
estate in order to prevent an unscrupulous
1307 Dec 13 P executor or relative from making away with any of the
goods. These inventories, drawn up by a so-called
appraiser (or
appraisers) allows twenty-first century genealogists to
gain some idea about what their ancestors owned and
were using in their everyday lives.
Meryl gave some examples. Samuel Gooch, who died in
1647 in Stanningfield, Suffolk, had no more than the
clothes he died in and his crossbow. He had fought on
the wrong side in the Civil War, and had had his estate
confiscated.
On the other hand, when Miles Docker died in Suffolk in
1597, he left a large country house of 21 rooms and five
hearths, and was obviously living in some comfort, his
inventory listing articles like armour, silver, a chess
board, a bible and other books, worth, Meryl told us,
around £330 (then), or £22,000 now.
Houses varied in size, in construction, and in furnishings.
Richard Petchey of Mildenhall, who died in 1680, left a
house of four rooms, but the inventory was remarkably
sparse, with a value totalling only £9.19.6d. Did this
indicate that some person (or people) had already
managed to make away with several items?
Meryl spoke at length about the inventory of her own
ancestor, Israel Barrel, a grocer, who died in Stowmarket
in 1675. The Barrel family was known in Stowmarket
during the seventeenth century; in 1644, Israel Barrel
was a churchwarden, and one of the receivers of "the rate
for the discovery of witches" when Matthew Hopkins,
the witch-finder of the eastern counties, arrived in the
town. He issued a tradesman's farthing token (undated) at
the Grocer's Arms in Stowmarket at sometime in the
latter half of the seventeenth century. Meryl described
the inventory in detail, following the appraisers from
room to room as they went round the property, itemising
the contents, even down to the chamber pot in a
bedroom. Clearly Israel Barrel was a wealthy man,
owning a house and shop, the house including a "hall"
(large family public room). Altogether there were some
twenty rooms of various shapes, sizes and uses, showing
10that this was a comfortably off family.
