garden.

In 1870 Rhodes was sent to South

Africa for his health, where he

joined his elder brother, initially in

Rhodes agriculture, but soon afterwards in

Oxford residence diamond prospecting. Over a period

of time Rhodes bought up small prospecting claims,

creating the De Beers company, and by 1889, with

finance from the Rothschild firm, he had formed a

monopoly of the diamond market in

Kimberley. During this time he had also

attempted to take a degree at Oriel College,

Oxford, where he spent at least two terms.

Rhodes developed a political life in the

Cape, and finally became Prime Minister of Cecill Rhodes
the Province. He resigned this after the disastrous

Jameson Raid in 1895, but remained a powerful political

force until his death from heart failure on 26 March

1902. Richard said at the outset that his talk was based

on his philatelic interests, and he illustrated it with

excellent photographs and colourful stamps, postcards

and other philatelic material.
