Hatfield Heath ardening Club ardens pen for Charity

A welcome sign that spring has arrived is the publication of the yellow book , the list of gardens open
for charity through the ational ardens Scheme. This is the scheme which encourages owners to open
their gardens, large or small, to the public, even for only one day in the year, so that they may be enjoyed
by all whilst raising valuable funds for charity. n 0 3. million was raised for distribution to more than
nine U based nursing and caring sector charities.

This year nearly ninety separate gardens will be opening in ssex alone. ostly they open on an individual
basis but occasionally owners in a particular village will open together to offer a range of different gardens
in one location.

ne such village is Clavering, perhaps best known as the location of The Cricketers pub owned and
run by Sally and Trevor liver, amie's parents. t is a pictures ue village with many th and th Century
timber framed buildings, a beautiful th Century church and village green. Chestnut Cottage is a one acre

chocolate box garden with sweeping lawns, wide flower beds and plenty of seats from which to view

the medieval heart of the village. Blacksmith's Cottage boasts an attractive garden with some unusual

plants bordering the historic cottage and an old smithy barn. Don't miss The ittle House built in 0

and reputedly the smallest thatched cottage in ngland.

Amongst the angley illage ardens open this year are April Cottage, a well established colourful
garden with old fashioned roses, clematis, ornamental ponds and a damp garden and hosta collection.
Church Cottage has a pretty garden surrounding the th Century thatched house. Duddenhoe range
nestles at the end of a 0 yard drive and contains a farm pond, woodland with mature silver birch and
oak trees, and roses and clematis around the house. The Chestnuts boasts mature trees and plantings
designed by Tristen night, RHS oung Designer 0 . ast but not least Wickets, an old favourite with
mixed borders, a profusion of roses, a lily pond, parterre and gravel garden.

Boreham ardens near Chelmsford comprise Caynton Cottage, a new garden designed and planted by
the owners since 0 3 on an overgrown plot surrounding a th Century thatched cottage. A wide selection
of shrubs and perennials is ever changing as the plants grow and mature. A rose covered wall backing
a perennial border greets you as you enter the three and a half acre garden at Brookfield. As well as
further perennial island beds the garden contains shrubs and a raised vegetable patch. Roses are a
feature, especially Rambling Rector. astly onalee is another continually evolving garden that has many
attractive features including an oriental garden. The wide variety of shrubs, trees and perennials is not
to be missed, neither are the free range chickens and resident heron

or dates and times, look out for the small yellow booklets when you next visit your nursery or garden
centre. ake a visit to one of the featured villages when, at the same time as benefiting deserving charities,
you can enjoy unusual gardens and possibly indulge in a cream tea.

The Hatfield Heath ardening Club next meet on April th when igel Start will give a talk on The History

of nglish ardens . n ay 3rd. Rodney Tibbs will return to talk on ardening Then and ow . eetings

. URC Summer Holiday Club
From Monday the 6th of August to Friday 10th of August we are hoping to run a Holiday Club in the hall attached
to our Church. The club will run from 9.30 until 12.00, it will be open to children aged 5 to 11/12 (year 6).
The Club will involve Crafts, Sports/Games, a Bible Story and other fun activities inside and out (dependent on the
weather) a drink and snack will be provided, all for the fantastic sum of £5 for the week.

DRB checked and first aid trained staff will be running the week. Obviously a lot of preparation has to go into

something like this so if you think you may be interested in your child/children attending could you please

express an interest at the email address [email protected] This is purely an expression of

interest and not at this stage committing your children to attend. ohn ackson

Holy Trinity and the URC joined forces to start Holy
Week in style this year.
About 30+ of us, including Rev Blair and Rev Dawn
had a Palm Sunday walk lead by beautiful Pixie the
donkey. We walked from the back of Holy Trinity
across the Heath, along Barker's lane entering the
URC though the churchyard at the rear, stopping
along the way to sing some uplifting songs.
We were met there by other members of the two
congregations where we had a slightly chilly, but
enjoyable out door service, followed by a delicious
lunch in our hall.
