KEEPING
THE WHEELS OF

THE DR. GRAHAM’S HOMES

TURNING

BIKE BENGAL 2010

Regular readers will remember my article in the HH
Magazine in August last year and the information that I
was undertaking the charity bike ride again in February
this year.

On completion of the 2010 event I, and I am sure my
fellow cyclists, felt we had been challenged but all had a
feeling of fulfilment and heart warming achievement in
equal measures.

In February we followed the same roads, camped at the
same towns and used the same excellent support team.
The difference this time was the marked increase in traffic
volume and associated noise and the general deterioration
of the roads particularly from Siliguri to Kalimpong, the
last uphill 45miles of the seven day journey.

Twenty people set out from the Baptist Mission in Bose
Street, central Kolkata, at 6.30am on Sunday 14th. Feb.
and very early into the trip it was obvious that we had a
wide range of cycling abilities and strengths but all
managed to complete the seven day ride despite several
punctures and two riders being forced off their bikes in
incidents and one having his derailleur broken in a
collision with another biker!!
The large lorries, which along with the trains, are the life
blood of modern India trundle up and down the roads with
precarious loads and driving at suicidal speed. Dalkola,
our fifth night stop was the scene of a major accident the
day we were arriving there. We saw the results of the
vehicles and the fact that 20 people died was not lost on
our own feelings.

On arrival in Kalimpong after the final climb up the hill
the children of the Homes welcomed us in splendid
fashion with their fife and drum band leading us through
2 the town on Saturday 20th. February.

The Rev. Dr. John Anderson Graham, while working as a Hunters Meet Restaurant
missionary in the Kalimpong area became particularly Cabaret Nights
interested in groups of children who seemed to him to

pedestrians and children crossing this area.

Parents have parked across Village Hall Emergency
Exits and blocked the driveways of the bungalows so
that residents are unable to leave, and visitors and
medical services have been unable to get to them. The
residents have been verbally abused and even
threatened when trying to get out. Village Hall users
are sometimes unable to get into the car park and have
also been subject to abuse. The wear and tear on the
road and car park is substantial and some 80% of this
is caused by parent use.

Children’s Parties The Village Hall is a registered charity. It receives no
funding from Parish, District or County Councils nor
Celebrations from any branch of Government – essentially it has to
be self supporting. It is managed by voluntary effort,
including all our income comes from hiring the building, and
any capital grants are becoming very difficult to
Wedding Receptions obtain. As an indication of expenditure incurred,
resurfacing the car park some two years ago cost us
over £17000.
