On the 11th hour 11.11.2021 there was a poignant
gathering at the Village War Memorial. This included
pupils from the local Primary school and children from
the Nursery on the Heath. Individual crosses were placed
in memory of fallen soldiers.
On Sunday the 14th there
was a Service of
Remembrance at the United
Reform Church followed
by the two minute silence
and laying of wreaths at the
memorial.
Both events were very well
attended.

You probably care most about the places where you walk, cycle or drive; where you exercise the dog, go for
a jog, let your kids out to play or where you pop to the shops. You might have thought that you don’t see

October Meeting Report
The October Zoom meeting saw Quentin Spear give an overview of the Official War Artists Scheme and a
look at the work of Eric Ravillious. Started in 1916 to provide non photographic illustrations for overseas
war propaganda articles, a sceptical War Office allowed 2 artists to be on the Western Front at any one
time. Muirhead Bone was the first artist appointed and his pencil sketch of a tank in action was a major
success. Followed by Francis Dodd doing portraits of senior officers and Eric Kennington sketching
‘Tommies’ in the field, the scheme gradually developed to engage artists with various styles and techniques
whose work was reproduced and exhibited. The end of the war saw the accumulated pictures handed over
to the newly established Imperial War Museum.
When WW2 started, Sir Kenneth Clark (head of the National Gallery) lobbied for artists to be ‘used and not
killed’, resulting in him chairing the War Artists Advisory Committee (WAAC), who appointed artists to the
services. This time the Army initially had four artists appointed – Edward Ardizzone, Edward Bawden,
Reginald Eaves and Barnet Freeman. The Navy chose Muirhead Bone but other appointments soon
followed, including other former WW1 artists Eric Kennington and Paul Nash. By the end of the war the
WAAC had 5570 paintings/sketches and this time the IWM only took a representative sample of them,
allowing other museums and provincial art galleries to have sets.
There was then a 30 years gap in commissioning work until a request to cover aspects of Northern Ireland
(1972), Falklands War (1983 with Linda Kitson), Iraq (1991), Bosnia (1993), and Afghanistan (2016).
For local connections, three artists were mentioned. Henry Moore at Perry Green with his London
Underground Blitz shelter’s; Edward Bawden of Great Bardfield who covered the Phony War in France and
Dunkirk, Middle East and Italy; Eric Ravillious of Great Bardfield/Castle Heddingham. Ravillious was raised in
Eastbourne before getting scholarships to Eastbourne Art College and then Royal College of Art in 1922 and
becoming a known upcoming artist before WW2. He was commissioned as a War Artist in 1940 and initially
worked on Naval subjects at Chatham and Sheerness, Grimsby, Norway Campaign. He had time off to
complete a set of lithograph prints on Submarines, having visited the training establishment HMS Dolphin
at Gosport. Following this he requested work closer to home as his wife Tirzah Garwood was ill, this
resulted in him being based at RAF Sawbridgeworth in 1942. Here he painted the planes, hut interiors and
the Pigeon Loft. A painting of a training session ‘Demonstrating a Machine Gun’ was left unfinished due to a
posting to Iceland. The day after arriving, he went up on a patrol looking for a missing plane, only for his
plane to become another casualty and Ravillious was the first of three Official War Artists to die in WW2, on
2 September 1942. The Fry Gallery at Saffron Waldon has an extensive archive of his work.
For our next face to face meeting at the URC Church Hall in Hatfield Heath is on Tuesday 14th December at
7.30pm. Mr Bedford will be speaking on the work of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission which
has celebrated its centenary this year. Quentin Spear
NEWS FROM THE GARDENS OF EASTON LODGE
This year, we are looking forward to our first wintry views of the restored balustrade and keeping our fingers
firmly crossed that in February we will not be waterlogged or in lockdown, so that we will be able to
welcome visitors for snowdrops again. This year, behind our closed gates, we did manage to plant additional
snowdrops around the Gardens, so for the coming snowdrop season they should be more spectacular than
ever. Save the dates: Sunday 13, Thursday 17, Sunday 20 and Thursday 24 February 2022
We are also now taking bookings for Group visits to the Gardens in 2022. These can be arranged for groups
of 10 or more and include entry, a guided tour and a copy of our informative paper Guide too, and tea/coffee
and slice of delicious home-made cake. To arrange a group visit, contact us on our
[email protected] or on our enquiries line 01371 876979.
If you arrange your group visit for a Thursday you will see our volunteers hard at work and be able to chat to
them about what they love about volunteering with us. We take on new volunteers year round, so why not
think about joining us as a volunteer? There is more information on our website: www.eastonlodge.co.uk

PRESS RELEASE – 6 November 2021
(Can also be viewed on the SAW website later on today, along with
photos at https://stanstedairportwatch.com/)
DIG FOR VICTORY!
One of the key agreements at the COP26 climate change summit currently taking place in Glasgow is a
commitment to stop global deforestation by 2030 and then begin to replenish the world's tree cover. We all need
to play our part and so today (6 November 2021) volunteers from Stansted Airport Watch began planting more
trees to increase the size of the 'SSE Wood', near Broxted Hill.
The SSE Wood was first established in 2004 on the site then proposed for a second runway. Terry Waite CBE,
planted the first tree and another 500 trees have since been planted including maple, oak, hornbeam, hazel,
hawthorn, blackthorn, beech and ash. The threat of a second runway has receded but it has been replaced by the
existential threat posed by climate change and, once again, trees may come to our rescue.
As well as increasing the size of the SSE Wood, Stansted Airport Watch is calling upon its 7,500 members and
registered on-line supporters to support its tree-planting initiative and to 'Dig for Victory' by planting a tree in
their own garden, allotment or other plot of ground to help win the war against climate change.
The original 'Dig for Victory' campaign was set up by the UK Government during World War II to encourage
men and women across the country to assist in the war effort by growing their own food in times of harsh
rationing. The current climate emergency requires the same rallying call.
The global climate emergency will not be solved by governments alone, especially when the aviation industry
continues to add to the problem. UK aviation was responsible for emissions of 38.5 million tonnes of carbon
dioxide (CO2) in 2019 and this is expected to carry on increasing for another ten years, and still to be more than
30 million tonnes in 2040.
Stansted Airport Watch adviser on climate change issues, Mike Young, commented: "You don't need to be a
tree-hugger to help combat climate change. Trees can make a difference and if you have a garden, you can
hopefully find room for at least one extra tree, whether it be large or small. Even a small tree in a pot can make a
difference. That's surely not too much to ask to help protect the future of your children and your children's
children."

THE HUNDRED PARISHES SOCIETY www.hundredparishes.org.uk
As 2021 enters its final month, we anticipate seasonal celebrations to brighten the
shortest days of the year. The ancient tradition of decking our houses with garlands of
fresh green holly branches reminds us of the continuity of life, bringing us cheer when
the days are short.
On reaching the age of 20, female holly trees bear red berries on branches covered with prickly shiny green
leaves which can be cut to make decorative wreaths. Such wreaths featured in midwinter Celtic and Roman
celebrations as symbols of good fortune, a tradition that continues thanks to the intervention of a local man,
William Winstanley (1628 – 1698).
During the Commonwealth which lasted from 1649 to1660, the Puritans under Oliver Cromwell proclaimed
that it was illegal to celebrate Christmas, banning frivolities and feasting on mince pies. Winstanley, who lived
in Quendon, believed in celebrating Christmas as a time for sharing joy, fun and good fortune with others. After
restoration of the monarchy in 1660, using his influence as a writer, he encouraged a return to the seasonal
merrymaking which we still enjoy today.
Holly trees were frequently planted near houses to ward off a lightning strike; interestingly scientific research
has revealed its spiky leaves can act as miniature lightning conductors! Holly also grows in hedges or as a
shrub in woods where its berries provide nourishment for blackbirds, thrushes and wood mice. Its dense
branches provide secure nesting sites. Deer and rabbits will eat its nutritious leaves.

St Clare Hospice, Hastingwood Road, Hastingwood, Essex CM17 9JX
Hospice opens new Bereavement Cafés to help people connect through grief
West Essex and East Hertfordshire charity, St Clare Hospice, is now enabling people in Harlow,
Dunmow, Epping and Saffron Walden to connect with others and access in-person Bereavement
support with the return of its Bereavement Cafés.
Bereavement Café events offer a space for people experiencing loss and bereavement to meet and
connect with other local people who have had similar experiences to their own. It is a safe place to
speak openly about their experiences, or just be in the company of others who understand. Anyone
who has experienced the loss of someone close to them, no matter how recent or long ago, is welcome
to attend a Bereavement Café event. It’s completely free to attend.
There are now SIX in-person Bereavement Cafés running.
St Clare Hospice, Hastingwood Road, Hastingwood, Essex, CM17 9JX – every Friday, 2pm –
3.30pm
Old Park Meadow Natural Burial Ground, Coppice Lane, North End, Nr Great Dunmow CM6
3PL 3rd Wednesday of the month, 10am – 11.30am
Potter Street Baptist Church, Harlow, 98 Potter Street, Harlow CM17 9AW – Last Saturday
of the month, 10am – 11.30am
Youth Bereavement Café (aged 18-30), Phoenix Lounge, 3rd Floor, Harvey Centre, Harlow
– 1st Thursday of the month STARTING 4th NOVEMBER 7pm – 8.30pm
Hemnall Street Social Club, 50 Hemnall Street, Epping, CM16 4LS – 2nd Monday of the
month STARTING 8TH NOVEMBER, 10am – 11.30am
Salvation Army, 5 Abbey Lane, Saffron Walden CB10 1AG – 3rd Thursday of the
month STARTING 18th NOVEMBER, 10am – 2pm
“We’re delighted to be offering our Bereavement Cafés in person again,” said Fiona Venus,
Bereavement Support Services Manager, at St Clare Hospice. “Although our online communities have
been a fantastic way of helping people experiencing grief to stay connected, especially through
previous lockdowns, we know that some people find it easier to open up and share their experiences
with others when they are in the same room.”
People who have used the Hospice’s Bereavement services have said that they’ve been able to return
to work; felt more confident, less isolated and more supported; developed new support networks and
made genuine friendships. One Bereavement Café attendee, Margaret, said:
“The first day I came over I was so nervous, but by the end of the afternoon I was so happy that I came. And
every week after that. The cafe has helped me a lot and although I don't feel the need to come every week now I
have made some very good friends and we get support with each other. I feel I have slightly moved on a tiny bit
with my life.”
St Clare Hospice is continuing to run its online Bereavement Café communities, in tandem with the in-
person Cafés, both as thriving Facebook groups and as Zoom meetings. More information on these can
be found on the Hospice’s website: stclarehospice.org.uk/bereavement-cafe

UNSUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT SITES - THE CHAIRMAN’S REPORT
(with reference to the Hatfield Garden Village)
The four local parishes under the USAG banner (Unsustainable Sites Action Group) joined together
in the summer to combat unsustainable, unwarranted and unwanted proposals for over 7,000
houses in and around our villages.
MANY ERRORS!
By the time you read this we will have submitted our response to the technical study produced by
Uttlesford for the 6,500 house site between our villages. As with many other sites submitted in the
local plan process there are a considerable number of errors in Uttlesford’s assessment, produced
by their remote consultants. These errors, if not corrected, would give credence to the
sustainability of this monstrous proposal. You will be able to read our response, together with
notes from our latest meetings, on the USAG website.
RESIDENT’S VIEWS
In preparation for our response to the next stage of the plan process we will be canvassing
residents’ opinions on both the large ‘garden community’ site and also the local sites in each of our
villages. It is most important for our residents to register with USAG and submit their
thoughts, views and issues on the proposals impacting them.
The surveys will be available on the front page of the USAG website.
In HBO the immediate concern is the proposal by Durkan Limited on farming land south of
Cannons Lane. They are intending to submit a planning application shortly and have produced a
website and publicity drive to try to garner support. The residents of Cannons Lane have formed
an action group to oppose this development and have distributed their own ‘Information Exchange’.
Updates on this too can be found on the USAG website under the ‘Progress’ page.
Unsustainable Sites Action Group (USAG): www.usag.co.uk Sign up for updates!
We must fight. The future of Hatfield Heath as a village is under very serious threat.
Keith Artus
Chairman of USAG.

A Little bit of Mindfulness for December.....
When you're feeling stressed or anxious, it is good to
focus on the breath. Tune into your breath at odd
times of the day, breathing in for a count of 4,
holding for 2, and breathing out to a count of 4. It
will help slow your heart rate and calm your mind
and body.
