‘LEST WE FORGET’

Part 1

by John Sly

Many historians of the Great War have
undertaken the task of researching the names
on their local war memorials. During my re-
search on the memorials in Hatfield Heath, Hat-
field Broad Oak and Bush End it became
obvious that some men, described in Soldiers
Died In The Great War (SDGW) as having been
born in Hatfield Heath or Hatfield Broad Oak,
were not included on the respective memorials.
Why this happened in each case is impossible
to determine at this remove, but my research
indicates that it is connected with the absence of
these particular men (but not necessarily their
respective families) from their stated place of
birth for a period of time before the outbreak of
the war.

It might be argued that these servicemen
should more correctly be commemorated on
memorials other than those of their respective
places of birth if they had had little to do with
those places for a good part of their lives. How-
ever, I believe that honouring those who once
lived in one’s own community who died in the
Great War is an important aspect of local histo-
ry. The names of those who were once part of
the community, for whatever time period, should
not be forgotten by posterity, even if they are not
memorialised in stone. It is all part of
‘remembering.’

The large majority of the men whose ca-
reers I have researched were designated in the
respective censuses as ‘worker on farm’,
‘horsekeeper’ or a variation of those descrip-
tions. Some surnames occur several times, and
several of the families numbered six or more
children. This means that there was often a du-
plication of names, occasionally making the
identification of a particular individual very diffi-
cult.

There is, of course, one element in this
research that has constantly to be borne in
mind: the accuracy of the records. The SDGW
data is presumably based on the information
given by the soldier on enlistment, and the Com-
monwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC)
data is based on responses from the bereaved
families. If the recruiting officer or Non-Commis-
sioned Officer was not familiar with the name of
the birthplace given by the recruit, or the recruit
could not spell it, or the recruit did not himself
know precisely where he was born, the place of

4

birth recorded could well be different from the DIXON & CO
birthplace recorded elsewhere. For example,
Hatfield Heath, in some records, was rendered Chartered Certified Accountants
simply as Hatfield, which causes confusion with
Hatfield in Hertfordshire. These potential inaccu- For all your tax and accounting needs

recruits were being attested in such a short time. Contact Paul Dixon Tel: 01279 739076

SB sits on Highways Panel with MS. Traffic survey carried
out at Dunmow Road/A1060 and Sawbridgeworth

improvement on traffic flow by changing either junction.
Agreed that the request to change the junction was not
prompted by improving traffic flow but to reduce speed
through village, and to improve safety at the junctions.

THE LIFE OF BRIAN

Brian Hart, 1936-2014

Brian Hart, the world famous

race engine builder died

earlier this year, at the age of

77. Brian was a local, and in

recent years he could often be

seen shopping in the Co-Op,

having tea at the Village

Tearoom or a meal in The

Hunters Meet.

Born in London, Brian caught

the motorsport bug at the age of 13 when he

went to Silverstone and watched the 1949 British

Grand Prix. He went on to train as an engineer

at the De Havilland aircraft factory in Hatfield,

Hertfordshire. In 1958 he joined the newly

formed Cosworth Engineering in North London,

working on race engine development. At the

weekends he would race his own Formula

Junior race car. He was an exceptional driver

and soon progressed up the ladder to Formula 3

and F2. In 1963 he won the Grovewood Award

as the most promising young British racing

driver. In those days F2 cars could compete

alongside F1 cars, and in 1969 he won his class

14045 - April 2014 in the Grand Prix at Nurburgring and again at
Hockenheim.

In 1969, he left Cosworth and set up Brian Hart

Ltd in Harlow, where he developed and built

Daniel Robinson race and rally car engines for Ford. The Ford
& Sons Escort, powered by Brian’s powerful and reliable
engine, dominated the World Rally
Independent Family Championship. Equally, his 2 litre Ford F2
Funeral Directors & Monumental Masons engine powered both Ronnie Peterson to
outright victory in the European Championship in
1971 and Mike Hailwood in 1972.

health, he returned to Essex and to his converted

barn in Beauchamp Roding.

I knew Brian in the 1970/80s from my days as PR

Manager of the Ford World Rally Team, and it

was a pleasant surprise a year ago, to look out of

my kitchen window and see an elderly gentleman

being assisted out of a car and going to the

Village Tearoom. I didn’t recognise him, but I did

recognise his motorsport jacket! From then on,

he was a regular visitor to Beehive Cottage and I

often visited him in Beauchamp Roding. We

talked about the good old days, watched

motorsport videos, and read bits out of history

books. The walls of his barn were covered with

photographs of F1, and many had hand written

thanks from one Ayrton Senna!

Although Brian’s dementia was deteriorating, in 130143 June 2014

May last year I took him and his two carers to the

Historic Festival at Donington Race Circuit, where

the late triple World Champion Ayrton Senna’s

career was being celebrated. Brian was in his

element, and had a whale of a time. He went all

around the paddock and was able to relive so

many memories of his racingr. The highlight of

the day was a photoshoot of Brian with Senna’s

Toleman-Hart F1 car. When the mechanic fired

up the ‘Hart’ engine the noise was deafening, and

Brian remained silent for a full ten minutes clearly

overcome by the emotion of the event. It was a

very special moment that will remain with me for a

long time to come.

Brian’s dementia continued to deteriorate, and

sadly he passed away in January this year. His

memorial service took place on 17 January at the

Holy Trinity Church in Hatfield Heath. The church

was packed with about 130 people, and the

guests were a veritable who’s who from the world

of motorsport, and included several F1 drivers

and team management.

It was a wonderful send off for Brian, and showed

just how much he was respected and admired

within our industry. I feel proud to have known

him.

His two sons, Freddie and Ben, together with their

mother Sally live in Perry Green, Much Hadham.

SPORT
As you may know, Year 3, were chosen to take part in the
Opening Ceremony of the Harlow Winter Games. Tiarna
Winger and Oliver Silvester have written a report detailing
their accomplishments:
Practising – Year 3 have been working veryhard for the past 6
weeks learning aninteresting dance to perform at Mark Hall.
We trained with our dance teacher Elysia. Place – We
performed our dance with four other schools at Mark Hall
Sports Centre for the opening Ceremonies of the Harlow
Winter Games.
Performance – The day has finally come! We all got changed
into our dance kit and were ready to perform. Nearly everyone
was nervous, but we all did a fantastic job and got a big cheer
at the end.
Special thanks to Elysia, Mrs Abbott, Miss Rollit-Mason and
Mrs Marrow for putting together this fantastic event. Tiarna
Winger and Oliver Silvester
