Memorial unveiling ceremony- 24th September 2021 2pm
At Little Noggins, Chelmsford Road, Hatfield Heath CM22 7BQ
On September 24th 1944 Martin Marauder B26 42-95853 nicknamed “Miss Laid” crashed at Hatfield Heath,
Essex, England. The three men on board all perished and are now buried in the American Cemetery at Madingley,
Cambridgeshire. They were as follows:-
Pilot 2nd Lt Howard H. Flight Engineer S Sgt Radio Operator/Gunner The crash site on the
Noland Cpl Warren E. Terrian Chelmsford Road
Jacob E. Crider III
The aircraft of the 391st Bombardment Group was one of a flight of six that had been on a ferry mission from
Matching Airfield to the Group’s new base at Roye Amy in advance of its move to France. Returning in bad
weather three of the six aircraft were unable to land and crashed with the loss of all on board totalling 12 men.
The Hatfield Heath crash destroyed several properties but mercifully no civilians were killed. The calamity has
always been known about in the village and several inhabitants still remember the aftermath.
However, to date there has been no memorial to the event. Now two locals have taken it upon themselves to
honour the three men who died. Steve Foster and Mark Ratcliff with the support of the Parish Council and Stuart
and Rachel Wells, the owners of the property where the plane came to rest, have designed and commissioned a
memorial and on the 77th anniversary of the event will be holding an unveiling ceremony.
Local councillors, Kemi Badenoch MP, the Deputy Lieutenant of Essex and the Honour Guard of the USAF have all
been invited to the ceremony which it is hoped will be a fitting tribute the airmen.
Following the unveiling there is an exhibition in the URC Hall that will tell the story of these men, the plane and
the USAAF at Matching Airfield. Parking is available in the URC car park CM22 7BH.

66 Chesnut Drive Hatfield Heath
Sometime in July there was some information on the Village Facebook page regarding a possible housing
development within the Hatfield Heath and Broad Oak Parishes. Please read the information given below by
Mark Lemon (Vice Chair of our Parish Council and Vice Chair of Uttlesford Planning Committee) and email
your views to mark at [email protected]
Uttlesford District Council Local Plan
The Uttlesford Local Plan Call for Sites has resulted in a considerable number of sites being submitted
for evaluation, approximately 299 sites. All these have the potential to be included in the Local Plan.
From these sites we need to build 14200 homes by 2040-approximately 706 homes per year.
There are many sites in the south of the district and in particular around the A120, B1256 and
between Hatfield Heath and Hatfield Broad Oak.
The Parish Councils of Hatfield Heath and Hatfield Broad Oak have agreed to work together and
provide financial resources. Other local Parish Councils have been contacted and are likely to join the
group.
The Parish Councils are extremely concerned about the sites submitted, particularly the major site
known as The Hatfield Garden Community, (6500 dwellings, schools and other infrastructure) north of
Hatfield Heath.
The local parish councils will work together with a Planning Consultant to focus attention on this major
proposal, giving a robust response against this site to the Uttlesford District Council in due course.
As your District Councillor and member of the Local Plan Working Group your views will be useful to
me.

URC Update
After my recent article in the village magazine regarding the future of the URC Building as a Church and
following the discovery of further dry rot in the main sanctuary with our escalating costs of repairs, following
listed status being applied to the building, many villagers responded on the village Facebook wanting to know
what the village could do to help. I said that I would keep you updated via this magazine.
As many of you will have seen we have scaffolding outside of the Church and on the inside. We employed a
team of highly skilled contractors including some first-rate carpenters who have replaced the woodwork "like
for like" and walls fixed with lime-plaster and flint. This has been a huge learning curve for the URC team, with
many hours of work getting things agreed with English Heritage(not to mention the increased costs of repair).
A huge thank you to Jacqueline who has led this project and has had a few sleepless nights and a few grey
hairs. Hopefully, we are nearing the end of the work, and we will be back in the main Church building for our
services.
At the beginning I said the Village wanted to know how to help. The best way would be to come and share
fellowship with us, followed by tea, coffee, and refreshments in our hall.
If you feel you do not or cannot attend our services but feel that you would like to make a financial
contribution towards the repairs and keeping our beautiful building open, please contact myself via the
Church or email [email protected] for details of how this can be done, including "gift aid"
donations which allow us to claim extra money from the government (never a bad thing).
Many Thanks
John Jackson

A Very Big Thank You
Rev Blair, the Elders and the Members of the United Reformed Church, Hatfield Heath (and, I am sure all of the
Friday Club Parents and Children) would like to say a very big Thank you to Tracey Sykes and Mike Waistell for
running the Friday Club over a great many years. Due to career changes and family commitments both Tracey and
Mike have regrettably decided to step down as leaders of this very successful Club.
The Club brought children from 7 – 11years together on a Friday evening for a fun couple of hours where the
children could be involved (for the first part of the evening) in art, supported by Dinah Hutchins, board games,
snooker or just catching up with friends……the second hour usually led by Mike was all about team games, with a
parent captaining each side – giant Jenga and Skittles will remain in everyone’s memory for a very long time. Club
nights were often supported by Tracey’s sons – their sporting skills were second to none…… I am sure that the
“Team Cheering” from the Children, Helpers and Parents could be heard in the next village……..a fantastic way to
end the week.
Parents played a very big part in supporting the club as they were on a rota to assist – however the driving force of
the club was clearly Tracey and Mike who put in many, many hours resourcing equipment and planning events, not
the mention the training that they both needed to enable them to lead the Club
Apart from the amazing Club evenings there were Christmas discos, Rounder’s on the Heath as well as the yearly
fare well party for the 11 year olds that were leaving the club……Tracey and Doreen’s catering skills were
legendary.
The URC would also like to thank the Friday Club for the very generous Mothering Sunday Gifts and their
continued support of the Whitechapel Mission – the Clubs fantastic donations to Whitechapel were always very
much appreciated as were the beautiful flower arrangements for our Mums.
The Club ceased running due to Covid 19 restrictions just before Mothering Sunday (and Easter) 2019 – but typical
of Tracey – she opened the club for one last evening so that Children could collect fresh flowers for their Mums and
an Easter egg (for themselves…)– I was there to assist on this evening and it really was an emotional goodbye –
however we all thought that we would be back together in 3 months…….sadly not the case.
It would have been good to open the club in September 2021 (if Covid allowed) – but clearly we now need to recruit
a new team and carry out all of the necessary training –sadly we do not have Tracey and Mikes experience but
thankfully both have offered a “hand over” which is very much appreciated.
Hopefully the Friday Club will be open in January 2022 and we look forward to welcoming new and existing
members. (Watch this space.)
Finally – when we are all able to meet (without the fear of being pinged) we can get together to say a proper Friday
Club THANK YOU to both Tracey and Mike
Jacqueline Jackson
Hatfield Heath Friday Club
Held in the URC Hall 7pm – 9pm (on a Friday…)
The HH Friday club is looking for a new leader to share the running of this thriving club as the current leaders are
stepping down after 20 plus years. The club has been running for 40 plus years and has a great reputation for
friendliness and fun.
The club is aimed at 7 – 11 year old local children (maximum number 30)
The club is well supported by the parents of the children who take turns to assist the leaders each week.
The current format is an hour of craft, board games, catching up with friends, followed by a snack and then the
final hour is dedicated to a team game which involves lots of fun, laughter and a huge dose of competiveness (in a
friendly way.) In the summer there are rounders on the Heath which is popular with the children and parents
alike……………
If you are interested in this Voluntary Post and feel able to commit to approximately 20 – 25 Friday Nights in a
year please contact me on [email protected] for more details
Kind regards
Jacqueline Jackson

‘Hello’ from the Curate….
As I write this, it’s been a month since I was licensed to all six
churches (Great and Little Hallingbury, Hatfield Broad Oak,
Bush End, Hatfield Heath, Sheering). These first few weeks have
been a bit of a whirlwind!
I hope you’ll be glad to know they started in prayer at a
supervision with Revd Dawn. I’ve visited most of the churches,
started to understand the worship pattern at a team meeting
with Dawn, David and Caroline, attended Holy Communion at
both Little Hallingbury and Hatfield Heath, Sunday worship at
Sheering, Gt Hallingbury and Hatfield Broad Oak, a Messy
Church celebration and Summer Fun Day, a baptism, a PCC
meeting and in-between times may have been spotted painting
at the Vicarage Hatfield Broad Oak where I will be living with my family and our very energetic puppy
‘Eggsy’.
Before discerning a call to Priestly ministry, I worked as a Project Manager in new technologies – a bit
different I know! Being Welsh, I am obviously into my Rugby and am also used to spending many an
afternoon watching my husband and now son play cricket.
Although brought up in an Anglo-Catholic church tradition, I’m used to more evangelical worship (I am
passionate about finding creative ways to pray, worship and basically share life together), and also care
deeply about building relationships outside of the church walls.
I am really looking forward to getting involved in the rhythm of life in all of the Six Villages and for us as
a family to start to settle in to life as part of the communities within the Six Villages. I am hoping to
meet more of you over the coming weeks and months and most of all to join in God’s work in the Six
Villages. If you see me out and about, please do stop and say ‘Hello’.

St Clare Hospice, Hastingwood Road, Hastingwood, Essex CM17 9JX
Walking in Memory event brings locals together to remember loved ones
West Essex and East Herts charity, St Clare Hospice, is inviting members of the local community to attend their third
annual Walking in Memory event, which will take place at the Hospice in Hastingwood on Sunday 19th September
2021 at 11am.
“Walking in Memory is a very special event for the whole family to take part in,” explains Sarah Thompson, CEO at St
Clare, “and is a thoughtful way to honour those who we love and miss by coming together with others who
understand.”
“Starting from St Clare Hospice, together we will walk a 5k route through the beautiful fields and footpaths of the
local, Hastingwood countryside, courtesy of our friends at Paris Hall Farm – in memory of lost loved ones.”
Walking in Memory is St Clare’s flagship fundraising event of the summer, and aims to bring together hundreds of
local people and families to take part in a 5k countryside walk to celebrate the lives of those who have died.
On the day, participants can also expect to receive a complimentary, hand-held windmill that can be personalised in
memory of the person they are walking in honour of.
“We wanted to add a special touch to the event that would stay with people even after the walk finishes,” explains
Dani De’ath, Challenges and Events Fundraiser at St Clare. “The windmills will be placed in the Hospice grounds as part
of a wonderful, colourful, memorial display, and there will also be some available to purchase for people to take
home.”
Also, by walking in memory of someone special, you’ll be helping to raise vital funding that supports St Clare to
continue offering our specialist, compassionate care to local people living with a life-limiting illness, and their families.
It’s a really powerful way of supporting others in the community to live, and die, with peace and dignity.”
Registration for Walking in Memory is now open via stclarehospice.org.uk/walkinginmemory
Tickets cost £10 for adults and £5 for children, or £27.50 for a family of four. Please note: Everyone is welcome to
attend the event, but due to the nature of the course it is advised that the landscape is unsuitable for wheelchairs and
pushchairs.
For more information on taking part in Walking in Memory, please contact Dani De’ath on 01279 773738
