14083 June 2015 HATFIELD MILL
History and renovation of Hatfield Mill was the
subject of the latest Society’s presentation.
Reference to the sail mill, ‘Merchants Mill’, built in
1842 and demolished in 1909 provided the prologue
to the talk. The brewery at Hatfield Mill, run by the
Sullins family until 1882 was said to be on four
floors ‘with an abundant supply of pure water from
a deep well’. A change from brewery to a steam
corn Mill took place in the early 20th Century. After
the First World War the Mill was run by the
Hatfield Heath Milling Company but is not listed in
directories for 1951 and 1954 which is probably the
decade it ceased to be used as a mill. During the
latter period of the 1990’s the Mill was not in use
but in 2006 a survey was carried out for conversion
to flats. This did not receive planning permission
but in 2013 renovation to a business premises was
agreed.
