SO LOOK NO FURTHER THAN Soldiers Died In The Great War recorded that
John Edward BARDELL was born in Hatfield
C.F OAKES Heath, but enlisted in Richmond, Surrey; he
served initially as Private G3/9452, East Surrey
Established in Harlow for over 45 years Regiment, but later as Private 22851, 1/Border
19 SERVICE BAY, WYCH ELM , HARLOW Regiment. He was killed in action on 1 July 1916,
the first day of the battle of the Somme. Because
14012 January to December 2014 he had a rather uncommon name, and because
his service record has survived at The National
offers 1 to 1 Personal Training and small group ( 2-3 people) Archives, I was able to trace much of his career.
Personal Training in a private gym in Hatfield Heath. He attested at Richmond-on-Thames on 1 June

email He left for Gallipoli on 24 November 1915, and
joined 1/Border Regiment on 20 January 1916.
The battalion moved to France in March 1916,
and Bardell took part in the regiment’s attack on 1
July just south of Beaumont Hamel, the objective
being Beaucourt Redoubt. The battalion’s war
diary recorded an horrific situation:
‘The 2nd S[outh].W[ales].B[orderer]s, whose
objective was the first two GERMAN LINES, were
wiped out by MACHINE GUN fire in our own wire.
The 1st Btn. The BORDER REGT, then went over
the top from our support line...The bridge over our
front trench having been ranged by the GERMAN
MACHINE GUNNERS the day previously, we met
with heavy losses, while crossing the bridges &
passing through the lanes cut in our wire. The
men were absolutely magnificent...The advance
was continued until only little groups of half a
dozen men were left here and there...’
Out of 23 officers and 809 Other Ranks, eight
officers were killed, missing, or wounded and
missing, 64 Other Ranks were killed and 144
were missing. John Edward Bardell was one of
the missing who were later presumed dead.
The General Register Office records show that
BARDELL’s birth was registered in Dunmow
district (which covered Hatfield Broad Oak and
Hatfield Heath at that time) in September quarter
1885. However, in the census for 1891 he is listed
as the third child, age five, of Lydia Bardell, age
43, head of the household at 11 Castlegate Lower

2

Road, Richmond, Surrey. Her occupation was CARPENTER
recorded as Cook Domestic, and she had been
born in Lambeth. The marriage of George Bardell, Specialist in bespoke fitted furniture
John BARDELL’s father, to Lydia Mary Marshall
was registered in Dunmow district in September 07779 715 888 01371 811 688
quarter 1884; it was George Bardell’s second
marriage. However, the death of George Bardell, www. adamsoncarpentry.co.uk
age 47, was registered in Epping district (adjacent
to Dunmow) in the March quarter 1889. It would 13018 January December 2013
appear that after the death of her husband Lydia
Bardell could not wait to get away from rural INDOOR BOWLS
Essex, and found a house in Richmond.
By 1901 John BARDELL was an errand boy with AT HATFIELD HEATH
the Post Office, living with his mother, now a OPEN TO ALL AGES
charwoman, and his stepbrother; both of the boys
were recorded as having been born in Hatfield MAKING IT A GOOD PASTIME FOR COUPLES

now at Grove Cottage, Kew Foot Road, For further information call
Richmond; his place of birth was rendered here Bob Jones
as Hatfield, Essex. When he attested he gave his 01279 730 741
address as 14 Houblon Road, Richmond. I or Richard Way
suspect that the reason why he was not 01279 730 066
commemorated in Hatfield Heath was that his
mother died in the September quarter of 1914,
and John BARDELL would then have had virtually
no connection with his place of birth. He is not
commemorated on the Richmond war memorial,
and I have yet to find where he might be
commemorated.

2, The letter regarding the "open top bin near the
playground" I agree that it is disgusting to put dog
waste in an open bin near any area, especially a
children's play area. But the much used "dog bin"
sited by the old peoples bungalows
in Broomfields, had to be moved to
accommodate the new car park.
When the council worker came to
empty the bin seeing post was
broken, lifted the whole bin and
threw it in his van. According to
the lady at Uttlesford "she knew all about it" as lots
of people had phoned her already. Alas we still have

Call Sid Perry on 01279 899 029 or 0777 622 1975 Dear Hatfield Heath Residents,

13048 Jan - Dec 2013 The season of Easter falls late this year – after the
wet winter it seems that Spring has only just begun.
MEMORIALS
Easter is the season of New Life – spring flowers,
J. Day & Son eggs, bunnies and chocolate (I am not sure why
chocolate is a sign of new life, although it does play
Station Road, Bishop’s Stortford a big role in the life of some people myself included!).

Easter is also the season of New Life in a spiritual
way. It is a time to refresh ourselves in our walk with
God as we celebrate the rising to life again that
happened to Jesus. This event of the Resurrection,
although it happened 2,000 years ago, is a powerful
symbol and reality that can encourage us today.
Even if we go through trials and problems in life,
whether big or small, the new life of Jesus reminds
us that there is always a way forward. There is
always a light at the end of the tunnel, or a new
dawn after the night. Perhaps we should take God at
his word on this, and trust him to bring us to happy
and joyful times.
Have a very Good Easter,
Best wishes,
Stewart
