Good news for the Prisoner of war camp 116 in Mill Lane

Extract from “Dunmow Broadcast - “ Former POW camp on council heritage list”
“A former prisoner of war camp has made a place on the Uttlesford Local Heritage List.
It includes the former Italian and German Second World War prisoner of war camp in Mill Lane,
Hatfield Heath, which has a guards’ compound, timber and concrete huts for prisoners,
dormitories, lavatory blocks, canteens, kitchen and hospital.
Some original features survive, including doors, shower cubicles and graffiti, understood to have
been the work of the Italian prisoners.
There is also a prominent water tower at the camp, which survives in good condition.
Historic England surveyed the site in 2003, and described it as being "near complete" which
places it in a group of only 17 percent of standard POW camps that survive.

Uttlesford District Council said the list will help to ensure the historic or architectural
significance of these assets is preserved and where possible enhanced as part of future
development proposals. “

Thanks to everyone who wrote in supporting the application and to Niki Chapman and David
Parish who spoke in favour at an online meeting.

Please note that the site is privately owned and access is prohibited. You may walk around part
of the perimeter on public roads and footpaths or bridleways.

GUIDED WALK!!!

President: William Gosling - Lord of the Manor

Following the AGM on Zoom, we were given an interesting talk by Sandra Saban on the
Royal British Legion Welfare activities in the village. She is well qualified to talk on this
subject having been a member for over 40 years and currently serving nationally on the Women’s Section
Central Committee and more locally as a Welfare Officer and on the Essex Board of Management.
This year marks the centenary of the founding of the British Legion on 15 May 1921, when four ex-
servicemen’s organisations merged. On 24 July 1921 the Women’s Section was formed to represent widows
and dependants interests in the organisation. Whilst it received its Royal Charter in 1925 it was only in 1971
that it received its Royal Appellation.

In Hatfield Heath the British Legion Branch was formed in 28 January 1928 and in the following year on 27
March 1929 the Women’s Section was formed. Familiar names from village life were involved on the Welfare
Committee, including the vicar Rev EH Herne and schoolmaster Mr Ralf Dix.

The first welfare application was for a bicycle to allow a members son to get to work and a £4 grant for its
purchase was made. The second application was from Hatfield Broad Oak where a man wanted to start a news
agent and a grant of £50 was made. This range in awards costs is reflected in other requests for 5 bags of coal,
help with transport to school for a scholarship girl in Little Hallingbury, a 5 year old girl’s funeral expenses
and £5 for a man to hire a cart to bring his family and household goods from Suffolk to start a shoemakers
business in Hatfield Broad Oak.

Originally the branch had money sent to its account for local distribution, once the HO had seen the claim

correspondence. In the 1990’s this changed to applicants speaking to a local Welfare Officer and then the

application is sent to the Area Office for approval and payment. Modern claims cover installation of stair lifts

or showers, mobility buggy’s, food (vouchers redeemable at three supermarket chains for food items only) and

support for school children (ranging from a laptop up to University fees). They also help recently retired

service personnel who have set up home with new jobs but have no household furniture.

Our April Zoom talk on ‘Tudor Education in Essex’ was given by Tony Tuckwell, a former headmaster of
King Edward VI Grammar School in Chelmsford that was founded in 1551.
The starting point for his talk was noting that with Henry VIII’s break with Rome and subsequent break
between Church and State, the former supply of people educated in the state language of Latin from the
Church was much reduced and a new route of education was required.

A review of the Monastery’s and their assets prior to the Dissolution recorded the Chantry Chapels that were
involved in education locally. For Essex with 65 Chantries only 16 were involved in Education, this included
Chelmsford with 2, Harlow and Thaxted. Edward VI proposed to re-found the schools but after an initial slow
start, in 1551, 15 schools were restarted nationally and another 9 new schools in centres of population.
Chelmsford was granted lands in Tilbury, Hatfield Peverell and Great Baddow as the endowment but had to
pay £2 0s 8d to Great Baddow to compensate for the closure of a Chantry that gave Poor Relief to the village.
The Statute setting the schools up limited the education to Latin and Greek Grammar and Religion, with
teachers being Priests. School children had to attend church and then write up the sermon on return to school
to become fluent in Latin. KEGS has the unwanted distinction of having a pupil killed by a Cleric in the
1620’s following a physical beating about the head!

By the 1800’s the constraints of the Statute Curriculum resulted in the Grammar Schools having few pupils -
Oundle had 4, St Albans Nil and Chelmsford dropped from 15 in 1794 to nil. This problem was eventually
resolved by Gladstone with the 1869 Endowed Schools Act that repealed all previous acts and created new
criteria that allowed new subjects (particularly Maths, Science and Modern Languages) to be added to benefit
the country and community with a broader based education. Whilst the Headmaster no longer needed to be an
Anglican priest, that influence lasted into the 20 Century as Tony was only the 5th non clerical head at the time
of his appointment.
So in Essex, the influence of the Tudor Education system really lasted 350 years!

Hatfield Heath Pre-School Group

Thank-you to everyone who supported our Gruffalo Trail on Sunday 9th May.
The weather was amazing and the fifty plus children who took part seemed to
enjoy themselves.
We have so far raised just over £1000, an amazing total, thank-you! We have
used £440 to buy a specialised Early Years storage unit. We will spend some
on items for the garden and the rest will go towards new flooring.

Thank-you to Michael and Catherine Hockley for
allowing the trail on their land and also
huge thanks to the Cricket Club for the
use of the pavilion.

66 Chesnut Drive Hatfield Heath

Over the last couple of years, we have been fortunate enough to have hedgehogs in our garden. It began when we
spotted one at dusk eating out of the bird food dish on the lawn. We invested in a hibernation box and were
thrilled when “Herbie” the hedgehog moved in for the winter! We then made a feeding station which was cat
proof and set up a trail camera.
We now know that we have about four hedgehogs in total of varying sizes, some of which can be identified
individually by marks on their backs and are now aptly named Zorro and Stripy! These marks are apparently
caused by self-anointing and show up white on the night camera.
There are several web sites such as the hedgehog preservation society at britishhedgehogs.org.uk which give
useful information on what to feed them, but the general consensus is cat food (meat variety) or better still cat
biscuits which don’t go off. Seeds, nuts and mealworms are not to be given, nor is bread or milk but water is
essential. Surprisingly, hedgehogs can swim so don’t worry if you have a pond as long as there are accessible
margins for the hedgehog to use.

Hedgehogs are considered “Vulnerable” and are on the Red List for conservation.
What can we do to encourage hedgehogs into our garden?

We now know that one of the main reasons why hedgehogs are declining in Britain is because our fences and
walls are becoming more and more secure, reducing the amount of land available to them. This means that
hedgehogs cannot move freely in order to get food, mate or build a nest. Hedgehogs usually travel between 1-
2km a night in their search for these.
We can make their life a little easier by removing the barriers within our control – for example, by making holes
in or under our garden fences and walls for them to pass through known as ‘Hedgehog Highways.’
A gap of 13cm by 13cm is sufficient for any hedgehog to pass through and will be too small for nearly all pets.
A campaign to encourage this is known as Hedgehog Highways. Hedgehogstreet.org can tell you more about

this scheme and https://ypte.org.uk is a website which young people might enjoy.

The hedgehogs have paid us back in kind by keeping the slug and snail population down in our garden. Lupins
that have formerly been eaten by the garden pests are now flourishing nicely and we also get the pleasure of
watching the hedgehogs antics on the night vision camera! The latest bit of news is that a hedgehog has been seen
taking mouthfuls of straw into the hibernation box so we’re hopeful of hoglets!

HHPC Parish Council Forum 15th. My
Dear all,

Firstly an abject apology for messing up the Zoom meeting scheduled for May

understanding of how to set up such meetings needs a lot more work,

but please call me direct if you have any issues and I’ll try and help.

The good news is that we will be holding a face to face Forum on June 12th in the Institute from
10:00 to12:00, with proper social distancing and Covid protection measures in place (including
masks).
Please join us to discuss your issues in full. As a guide you will find the latest minutes of the
Parish Council meeting on the village website so you can see what we are (or are not) doing prior
to the meeting. Nigel Robley Cllr, HHPC

Parish Council Grants

The Parish Council has budgeted some money this year which is available for the making of grants.

Last year grants were made to ten different recipients, mostly with a connection to the village.

Applications should be made in the first place to the parish clerk stating; how much you are applying for,
what it is for and a brief explanation of why you want it. Applicants should also quote the bank details that
they would like any grant paid into. Council members will consider all applications and they will usually be

considered for payment in the month of January.

Look after the ones you love, and St Clare, this Wills Month

When it comes to looking after our family, there isn’t much we wouldn’t do to take care of them. It may
come as a surprise then, that when it comes to stating our wishes for after we’ve gone, more than half of
adults living in the UK admit that they do not have a Will.

This June, St Clare is holding its annual Wills Month – reminding people that writing your Will is one of
the most important things you can do to ensure that your family is cared for and that it is never too soon to
start thinking about it.

From Tuesday 1st June – Wednesday 30th June 2021 you are able to make or amend your Will for a
suggested donation to St Clare Hospice.

Wills Month organiser, St Clare Corporate Fundraiser Charlotte Durham, said: “We are delighted that we
have six participating Solicitors’ firms who have kindly volunteering their time so that supporters can make
or amend their Will in return for a donation to St Clare Hospice. Making a Will as part of our Wills Month
will help to raise vital funds for St Clare Hospice – so there has never been a better time to do it.”

For a suggested minimum donation to St Clare you will be able to make one of the most important
documents in your life – whilst also raising vital funds for your local Hospice. The suggested minimum
donations are: £150 for a Single Will; £200 for a Double Will; £85 for an amended Will.

A donation of £150 is enough to pay for ten counselling sessions for a bereaved family member, friend or
loved one, delivered by a qualified counsellor. St Clare’s bereavement support and counselling can be vital
in supporting someone to face their grieving journey.

The participating solicitors are: To book an appointment, please get in

Dave Jackson – his musical legacy lives on

It is with great sadness I bring you news that my beloved and dearest husband
passed away peacefully on the morning of Saturday 15th May following a three
year battle with lung cancer.
Those three years have been filled with music, (Dave Jackson Trio); happiness
and laughter. On behalf of myself and the trio's drummer, Costa Fafalios, I
would like to thank the Village Magazine for supporting our jazz piano trio in
its quest to bring back live music locally.
Five years living in Hatfield Heath has brought us much happiness and I know
that Dave would want me to thank you all for welcoming us here and for your
friendship and support.
