The small original allotments site at the rear of
MEMORIALS Broomfields was part of nearby Little Heath Farm
and owned by the Houblon Estate and occupied by
J. Day & Son John Pamphelon. Its first use as allotments is
unknown for certain but is believed to have been
Station Road, Bishop’s Stortford from the 1950s when there were 12 full plots in
regular use. The land was given for that purpose by
Bishop’s Stortford 01279 654 555 Mr John Robarts but by 2006 only Gerald Pearson
Edmonton 0208 807 3712 cultivated a single plot. In July 2009 an appeal was
made in the Village Magazine for anyone interested
www.jdayandson.co.uk in allotments. Following an informal meeting in
2010 a voluntary management committee was set up
which became linked to a plan for affordable
housing and in October 2012 outline planning
application was formally submitted to Uttlesford
District Council by Hastoe Housing Association and
ultimately gained approval.
A process of clearing the site took place and a group
of applicant volunteers and Hastoe employees

marked out the
plots. Each
pathway was laid
with a turf finish,
manure purchased
and work on the
land could begin.
Almost six and half
years after the inaugural meeting the allotments
were allocated to the applicants on Monday 16
November 2015. The legacy which is Moat Field

Hall Estate. A far cry from the affordable housing
scheme which is now an established feature
alongside the allotments.

Charge and still retained that position when Evelyn

Notley arrived in 1937. (Dr White and Sister Cook

were married in July 1949). It is strange how Broad

Oak Sausages have a link to the hospital. Dr White,

also a Farmer, found difficulty selling pigs from his

farm. Sister Cook was the daughter of an Irish

butcher, who shared his unique sausage recipe with

her for Dr White’s use. This saw the beginning of

Broad Oak Farm Sausage Company. Evelyn Notley

tells in her recollections. ‘Hatfield Broad Oak

sausages were made by Dr White and the spices

were stored in the boiler room. Florence Cook, our

sister in charge, mixed the spices and peppers upon

the kitchen table carefully weighed and measured

before being made into sausages.

From 1946 when the National Health Service was

formed Bishop’s Stortford Hospital Management

Committee was responsible for running Eden

Cottage Hospital until its closure in 1958, to a great

outcry from the Village, until in 1959 Dr John

Bennison and his wife bought the property to make

it their home and surgery. It was originally based in

their house in Hatfield Broad Oak, and was

combined with a mobile surgery which they drove

around the villages. When the Drs Bennison retired

in 1988, the practice at Hatfield Broad Oak moved

into temporary

accommodation

and then moved again

to Cannons Lane in

1989 under Drs.

Gilchrist, Katharine

and Peter Orton. A

link with the old

cottage hospital was

still retained by naming the new building the Eden

Surgery. The original building of Eden Cottage

hospital still remains at the top of Feathers Hill but

is now occupied by a company entitled ‘Finance in

Medicine’.

Escape Beauty Dear Mr Scheggia,
I have read the article by John G Brewer in
Ÿ G5 Anti - CelluliteTreatment 40 mins £20 December issue of Hatfield Heath magazine with
Or course of six £100 great interest as well as some frustration. I find it
disappointing that someone who obviously have in

misrepresent basic facts.
Ÿ L.V.L Eyelash Perm plus tint £40 lasts up to six Firstly, centre of the village appears to be in dispute

also attach what I believe to be the proposed route

Mr Brewer’s observations and proposals regarding

Comical legal swathe of 3km (+/-1.5km) from

This is why many like Mr
Brewer assume Dover
NPR is not centred at the
village. Besides no aircraft

technical, environmental or
other reasons, if they did,
every landing would have
had the huge risk of

Hatfield Heath Parish Magazine

Dear Bruno

May I, through the medium of your magazine, explain the situation regarding the Parish Council
precept for 2016-17. The precept is the amount required by the Parish Council to perform their
duties and is collected by Uttlesford District Council as part of the Council Tax.
Over the last 10 years the increase in the amount required by the parish council has been kept to a
minimum, with a zero increase in three years and less than 2.5% in another four years.

Within Uttlesford, there are 10 parishes of a similar size to Parish Precept Band D
Hatfield Heath and you will see from the table that Flitch Green 20029 25.72
Hatfield Heath was the second lowest in terms of precept Hatfield Heath 21490 26.57
and Band D payment for the last financial year. This has Wimbish 15526 28.85
been consistent over the preceding 10 years at least, and Elsenham 43048 45.93
in fact the Band D payment for 2013/14 was £28.89, so a Stebbing 33430 53.35
reduction of £2.32 was achieved over two years. Felsted 66052 54.50
