You may have noticed the fresh new look which refects feedback received over the past month. This includes the following changes that you wanted to see: • Use a single photograph for the front page and make it clear that it is the Hatfeld Heath Village Magazine and which month it covers • Create an index on the inside front cover • Dedicated areas for advertisements • Include local residents’ testimonials for advertised companies • Limit the use of boxed outlines for the articles • Use photographs as much as space will allow • Merge contact numbers and web details for local contacts • Minimise repetition and make it easier to fnd the dates for Parish Council meetings and Forum We also received many requests to print the entire magazine in colour. Sadly this signifcantly increases the cost of production so, for now, we will continue with full colour on the front and back pages. Many thanks to all of the advertisers who help to cover the cost of printing the magazine every month. This means that it can remain a FREE magazine which is delivered to all residents across Hatfeld Heath. Hopefully, we will be able to consider further changes to the magazine over the coming months and we welcome your ongoing feedback. Please continue to support your free, local magazine by sending in articles and suggestions for future issues. More thanks go to Andrew Peasey and Mark Homer for providing some excellent ‘mock ups’ of how the proposed changes would look like in print! Also, another thank you to Ken McDonald for straightening up the image of the Hatfeld Heath sign. We no longer have this on the front page but have included it above, as it is such an iconic image for the village. - Dawn Cox INDEX: Front Page: Holy Trinity Church, supplied by Mark Homer. Hatfeld Heath Men4s Shed had its offcial opening in :une ;ith lots of interest from 8illagers. The shed is part of the Hatfeld Heath Institute having been transformed from a dusty, dilapidated storeroom into a full workshop. Men of all ages meet to share skills, make things, enNoy a chat and lots of tea. Members made a set of stocks for the festival, something that caused much enNoyment as folk aimed wet sponges at the incumbents of the medieval contraption. They’ve also made a new noticeboard for the church and are currently building bird boxes, hedgehog houses and a Tawny Owl nest box to sell to raise funds for the shed. They’ve also mended a sit on shower chair and donated it to a local person and fxed the fve-bar gate into the churchyard. You don’t need to be skilled at woodworking to become a member, Nust have an interest in Noining in the camaraderie of shed activities. It’s well known men are at greater risk of loneliness or unwanted isolation than women and the impact Men’s Shed activities can have on members’ mental health and wellbeing is overwhelming. 8 Hatfeld Regis Local History Society 3 4fl ) ' ff , 3 ( 2 The Chamberlayne Family of Ryes Manor At the April meeting talk on the history of St. John the Evangelist church at Bush End, the comment that not much was known about Sarah Chamberlayne who laid the church Dedication Stone and help fund its building was thought to be worthy of a bit more elaboration. The Manor of Ryes to the west of Hatfeld Broad Oak predates the Doomsday Book and had a long list of owners. In 1701 it was purchased by Jefrey Stanes from London, who also purchased Lea Hall in 1714. On his death in 1732 it was passed to his grandson, Stanes Chamberlayne (1). On his death in 1782 it was passed to his son and heir Stanes Chamberlayne (2) (1750 – 1834). This was the father of Sarah who laid the Dedication stone but on his death the Manor was sold on to John Archer Houblon (of Hallingbury Hall) who had the original house demolished and a new building erected to its side, which is the current Grade 2 Listed house. Sarahʼs father married Mary Brocket from Willingdale Spain on 24 Feb 1778 and went on to have seven children : Staines Brocket (9 April 1782), Sarah (26 April 1785), William (1788), John (2 August 1791), Emma (30 May 1794) and twins Harriet Alicia and Henry Thomas (23 May 1798). Stanes Brocket was a barrister and married in 1822 at Rye in Sussex but in 1834 changed his surname to Brocket to allow him to inherit his maternal grandfatherʼs fortune and family residence Spains Hall. He died in 1873 survived by several children. Sarah never married and moved to London by the 1851 Census, being recorded as a Fund Manager. She was 61 when she returned for the stone laying and on her death in 1870 a memorial was erected in St Maryʼs recording her contribution to building St Johns as well as education in the parish. In her will she gave annuities to beneft Bush End School and its pupils. The residue of her estate of £13,128 was to beneft the Parish in specifc areas and is still in operation. William joined the Army and rose to the rank of Lt. General. He married Sarah Preston from York on 7 Jan 1832 and moved to Orford House in Ugley, which he had inherited from his Aunt Hannah. There they had two daughters who died young – Sarah Ann Olivia (1833 – 1863) and Caroline Mary (1838 – 1868). William died on 21 July 1869 and his wife lived on at Orford House until her death in 1887. John graduated from Jesus College, Cambridge in 1813 and trained for the church, being Priested in 1816. In 1823 he settled in as Rector of Eastwick on the Hertfordshire side of Harlow and remained unmarried until his death in 1867. In the 1841 Census he was joined by his younger sisters Emma and Harriet at the Rectory. After his death they both moved to London and Harriet died in 1872 and Emma died in 1886. The family had burial rights in the South Chapel of St Maryʼs, granted to the owners of the Manor of Ryes since 1570, so that is where many of the family are buried and have memorials. In 1897 the chapel was dedicated for public use by Lt. Col George Archer Houblon, the then owner of the rights. Henry Thomas initially eluded my research as he moved to Warwickshire. In 1820 his father was successful in gaining legal claim as vouchee to the estate of distant relative who had died without issue, Stoneythorpe Hall in Long Itchinton, Southam. It is interesting that the elder sister of Stanes Chamberlayne (2) had also married a Southam gentleman. Henry Thomas had married the daughter of a Southam lawyer in 1824 and they went on to have eight children. As with St Maryʼs, there are several monuments in the parish church to record the family members buried in the vaults. Again, one son entered the Church but two became barristers, and it was the younger son Stanes Brocket Henry who gained fnal probate on the wills of Lt Gen. William Chamberlayneʼs wife and daughters in 1887. This branch of the family retrained Stoneythorpe Hall until 1999, after which the estate was sold to become a Polo Club and in 2017 the house was sold for £3M to become a family residence again. A fnal connection brings us back locally as Sarah Chamberlayne also set up a charity in Long Itchington in her will of 1856 that was fnally approved in 1894 for poor widows or children. Obviously, a lady committed to her Christian belief and helping the poor. Our meetings recommence on September 19th, when Christopher Thompson will talk about The Careers of Sir Francis and Sir Thomas Barrington of Hatfeld Broad Oak from the Accession of King James to the English Revolution 1603 – 1644. - Quentin Spear 5
9 Hatfeld Regis Local History Society 3 4fl ) ' ff , It was pleasing once again to be involved with Hatfeld Heath Community Primary School. The proNect involving Year 6 this year was based on the theme of ‘Our Village’ which provided the opportunity for Pupils to express themselves in many ways. It provided an interesting experience showing how the many facets of each Village can be recorded. It was possible to use a variety of techniques produced in perhaps many types of design concepts possibly written, photographic, drawn, use of collage material or computer generated. Pupils could use any form which they felt refected their individual personality. Work produced was of a high standard showing a wide range of initiatives when dealing with ideas moving to the fnished piece of work. Using Power Point, photography, illustration, painting and drawing techniques all demonstrated a range of outcomes. David Parish, Chair of the Society, Nudged the work along with Ivan Cooper who had organised the proNect with Year 6 Teacher, Mrs D Davis, both were equally impressed with the outcome. The Pupils were undoubtably pleased with the work they had produced and regular contact once again with the History Society is paramount to the proNect. Certifcates and prize tokens were awarded three Pupils and Commendations to two others all signed by the Lord of the Manor, President Patrick Streeter and David Parish. The School and Society are equally committed to ensure that involvement with the proNect continues and forms part of the Pupils experience before moving to Senior School. The photograph shows the fve pupils with their certifcates. From left to right Martha, Ro, David Parish, Darcy, Daisy-Lynne and Ruby. 10 ffiffl LETTER FROM CLLR S?SAN BAR7ER Dear Residents, I do hope that you have managed to have a break over the summer and a bit of a rest. You may be aware that the Boundary Commission has now concluded its review of Parliamentary seats and that Essex retains the same number of MPs. There are however signifcant changes for the Saffron Walden seat due to the level of growth there has been in the area. Not only has its name changed to North West Essex but it has also lost several wards to Braintree and Harlow. Felsted and Stebbing and the Sampfords will now become part of the Braintree constituency and Hatfeld Heath, White Roding, Great and Little Hallingbury, Hatfeld Broad Oak and Great Canfeld move to the Harlow Constituency. They are still in Uttlesford Nust a different Parliamentary representative from 2024. Essex County Council divisions are now being looked at. Uttlesford currently has 4 County Councillors, Dunmow, Stansted, Takeley and Saffron Walden, each based on those towns with numerous smaller settlements added onQ but Uttlesford housing growth has resulted in my Division, Dunmow, being around 37S above the average the boundary Commission likes no more than a 10S variationffl and if left as existing would grow to be 49S over the Essex average by 2029. With currently 20,500 voters in the Dunmow Division and 12.500 in South Woodham Ferrers evidently some rebalancing is required. Proposals have now been submitted for 5 County Divisions within Uttlesford based, as before on 4 towns but with an additional seat based on Takeley. This seat is the current Dunmow seat minus Great Dunmow. In turn the Great Dunmow seat now includes Flitch Green, Felsted and Stebbing. Across Essex Harlow and Maldon have also gained an additional seat. These new boundaries will, as suggested or amended by the Boundary Commission come into effect from 2025. Susan County Councillor for Great Dunmow division District Councillor High Easter and the Rodings Chairman Essex Pension Fund I have adopted the Essex County Council Standard Privace Notice for Councillors. This tells you what I do with your personal information. https:assets.ctfassets.netknkzaf64Nx5x 4gUPJKV284d7ySTRRPnUoP 1c56d7e98267af723bf05c60239416f72018Tpr ivacyTnoticeTforTcouncillorsTv9.pdf Leisure Hour We return to the URC hall on Wednesday 6th September at 2pm for a presentation by Steve Foster and daughter Jessica. This year they should all be gorgeous, following the showers we have had since June. And with these splashes of colour and the ripening sGuashes, pumpkins, apples and pears our excitement is building for our Apple and Bees Day on 17 September. The Apple H Bees Day is usually great fun with a host of activities for visitors. The day will tickle the taste buds. There will be apple pressing and the opportunity to take juice homeI fresh applesI orchard produceI a range of honeysI and apple and honey cakes. Our tombola of jams and jellies made from our soft fruits is hugely popular. Jisitors will also be able to buy cider made from our applesI honey and beeswax itemsI our garden produceI craftsI and plants. There will be apple and honey craft activities for children and a related trail. Our volunteers and visiting exhibitors love the day and the opportunity to chat with young and old alike about the joys of orchards, fruit and the benefts fruit trees provide for local wildlife. This year we will be joined for the frst time by Take Kote, a concert band based in Felsted. They have a huge range of instrumentalists and hence a wide repertoire, so it will be exciting to hear what they play at the GardensL Tickets will be available in advance through Try booking or on the Gate, with the Gate opening at 11.00 and last entry 4.00. I booked them to clean my roof of my house of all the moss and treat it for future. They also did my drive and patio. They did an excellent Nob and I could not be more pleased with what they did. They went above and beyond and they also cleaned the sides of my house, gutters and conservatory roof which was all included in the very reasonable price. They started at 8am and fnished at 4pm, working not stop. They were two hard-working men who took pride in their work and business. I cannot praise this company enough and would recommend them to anyone. if interested in getting your home pressure washed, then this is the company to use: Lauren Williams email - [email protected].
