FLOWER ARRANGING CLASSES AT BORIS JOHNSON IGNORES
COUNTRYSIDE IN FAVOUR OF
The Institute, Hatfield Heath
POLITICS
1st Monday morning of the month from September
2013 Stop Stansted Expansion (SSE) has condemned
Boris Johnson's latest intervention in the debate
(2nd Sept/ 7thOct/ 4th Nov/ 2nd Dec) about UK airport capacity. This follows the
announcement yesterday [15July] by the London
10.30 ----12.00 Mayor that Stansted was still on his short-list to
Price £19.50 per class become a four runway mega-hub airport to replace
(special price of £70 for 4 weeks) Heathrow.
Includes all flowers/ sundries/ tools
Suitable for all abilities Justifying his decision to short-list Stansted, Boris
Johnson said that it had the benefit of "being sited in
Booking essential a relatively sparsely populated region ... with none
Ring Shirley on 01279 420736 of the environmental or wildlife issues that would
Email: [email protected] need to be overcome in the estuary."
Web: www.shirleysfloralworkshop.co.uk
The London Mayor's dismissal of the environmental
MEMORIALS issues at Stansted is completely at odds with every
independent assessment carried out in the past.
Direct From Stonemason Graham Eyre QC, the last planning inspector to
consider the possibility of additional runways at
J. Day & Son Stansted, rejected this out of hand in the strongest
possible terms, saying that even one extra runway
would be an "environmental disaster", "a
catastrophe", and "wholly unacceptable".

These conclusions are not surprising since Uttlesford

Station Road, Bishop’s Stortford District, which is home to Stansted Airport, is one of
only two local authorities in the whole country with

FOR BROCHURE & PRICES over 2000 pre-1700 listed buildings. In addition, the
historic listed buildings and villages around Stansted
are embedded in what Oliver Rackham, the great

OR A HOME VISIT CALL historian of the English countryside, has defined as
'Ancient Countryside', a landscape whose fields,
woods and roads date predominantly from before

1700. These points alone make this part of North

0800 783 521 West Essex and East Herts a most remarkable and
valuable area of English countryside.

SSE Chairman Peter Sanders commented: "Boris

Johnson's dismissal of our local heritage and

Bishop’s Stortford 01279 654 455 landscape is an affront to all the people of North
West Essex and East Herts. It seems clear that he has
absolutely no knowledge of the area."
Edmonton 0208 807 3712 Mr Sanders added: "As Mayor of London, of course,

he has no need to involve himself in our affairs. He

12

is responsible only for what goes on in London and
he depends only on Londoners for votes. It is surely
no coincidence that he rejects expanding Heathrow,
which is within his constituency, and all of his
options for airport expansion are well outside his
constituency. It remains our view that there is no
need for any extra runways in the south-east.”

Notes
1. The Mayor of London's press release of 15 July
2013 can be found at
http://www.london.gov.uk/media/mayor-press-
releases.

2. The area around Stansted Airport was
characterised by John Betjeman as:
"... a quiet, prosperous, agricultural area of old
stone and flint churches, pargetted cottages with red
tiled roofs, spreading farms and gabled manor
houses, little hills, elms, oaks, willowy streams and
twisty lanes leading to towns of such renowned
beauty as Thaxted and Saffron Walden. The very
fact that this country is so gentle, unobvious and
typical of the best of England makes it all the more
important that, being so near to London, it is
preserved from noise and development."

3. 'Ancient Countryside' is defined as districts
whose fields, woods and roads etc date
predominantly from before A.D. 1700, and Oliver
Rackham has described it as ‘the England of
hamlets, medieval farms in hollows of the hills,
lonely moats and great barns in the clay-lands,
pollards and ancient trees, cavernous Holloways
and many footpaths, fords, irregularly shaped
groves with thick hedges colourful with maple,
dogwood and spindle – an intricate land of mystery
and surprise.’ ['The History of the Countryside',
Oliver Rackham, Dent, 1986.]

PROM EVENT Hair by BEE BEE

"Dear Hatfield Heath Villagers ALL ASPECTS OF HAIRDRESSING
We would like to thank everybody in the
village for their patience and LADIES and GENTS

understanding on the night of 1st July when Hair By Bee Bee
there was an ‘after prom’ party in the
village. Wed & Fri 9 am - 6pm Sat 9am - 12noon
As 16 year olds organising our own prom
and after prom event, we were unable to Annetta 01279 870 662
afford a prom venue at the premium rates
that were offered to us on a Friday or
Saturday evening, so that is why we
accepted a Monday night.
We did notify people living in close
proximity in advance, but on a very still
night we sincerely apologise if the music
travelled quite so far. We managed the
sound and the whole event as best we could
given the supervision and advice of the
local police. This included an invitation only
list, ‘bouncers’ on the gate checking all
invitations, plus a number of parents were
present. We are also not proud to be
associated with the noisy few who remained
in the area until early Tuesday morning.
It was a one off event that you can be sure
will not happen again. On a positive note,
the money we raised will be going to a
charity for Multiple Sclerosis.

Year 11 After Prom Committee"

Many thanks.
Yours faithfully,
The Year 11 Prom Committee

When the Parish Magazine celebrated its 50th Year
anniversary in 1943, the Vicar, and Magazine
Editor, the Rev A F Gardiner contacted earlier
incumbents going back to the first edition in 1893 to
ask them to write about their reminiscences during
their time at Hatfield Heath. All replied!.and gave a
fascinating account of life in the Village during their
period of occupation. In particular the accounts
given by the Vicars during the two World Wars
gave an insight as to life here which could not be
obtained by any history book.

Here is the fifth report which covers the period
1927 - 1932 during the Rev. W H

One of my happiest recollections is of the

candidates a message that would not fail to help
