HATFIELD HEATH Village Magazine October 2023 Your FREE monthly magazine-created and distributed by volunteers and paid for by advertisements Est 1893 www.hatfieldheathvillagemagazine.weebly.com

22 Welcome to your October issue of the Hatfield Heath Village Magazine. Thank you to all who have given feed back relating to the new look of our village magazine. The majority of responses were in favour of the use of a single image on the front page and said that it was easier to find local information because of the new layout. Apologies to those who preferred the magazine as it was. It is so very hard to find a balance that works for everyone, but we will continue to listen to your comments and make changes where it reflects the majority. We continue to thank the advertisers who help to cover the cost of printing the magazine and owe a huge ‘thank you’ to all of the volunteers who distribute the magazine each and every month, come rain or shine! It was great to see the Red Ensign flag being flown at Hatfield Heath to honour Merchant Navy Day, on Sunday 3 September. I was informed that the flag pole belongs to The Royal British Legion and, as I write this article in mid September, the Essex County flag is being flown. This is due to be changed for Trafalgar Day, in remembrance of The Battle of Trafalgar. On 21st October 1805 a fleet of 33 ships, (18 French and 15 Spanish), fought and were defeated by a British fleet of 27 ships under Admiral Horatio Nelson. The Royal Navy hold a special ceremony on HMS Victory to mark the anniversary and remember those who lost their lives. Please keep sending in your articles, suggestions and photographs! SHOSHIN is a word from Zen Buddhism. It refers to having an attitude of openness, eagerness and lack of preconceptions when studying a subject, even when studying at an advanced level, just as a beginner would. It is enjoying life with wonder and curiosity. It comes with a big serving of humble pie. As the late Zen teacher, Shunryu Suzuki Roshi famously said, "In the Beginner's Mind there are many possibilities. In the expert's Mind, there are few." So keep going, keep practicing, keep learning, keep open, keep curious - and surround yourself with others who love and support your beginning. Sent in by Kim Butler

66 HATFIELD HEATH VILLAGE HALL Summer Space is now closed. It will (hopefully) return as "The Space" on Monday 30th October 2023. Crafting events, remote Citizen'sAdvice, a Cook Club and sessions of Seated Yoga are being planned. My thanks go out to all the volunteers and the many visitors who took part in the enjoyable activities. I look forward to greeting you all again in the future. HilaryAllen. MALLYON’S “THE FAIR THAT REGULARLY VISITS HATFIELD HEATH” I popped into visit Robert Mallyon, and his wife June to ask if they would like to have an article about them in the Village magazine and they were only too happy to oblige. When I returned Robert was in town, but June invited me into their caravan to answer my various questions. Robert and a partner started the fair around 33 years ago. He originally heralded from Hadstock, and June came from Norwich. Presently, June helps their sons and daughters Ryan, Robert, Patricia and Shannon carry on the tradition of the fair. The family live in Saffron Walden but 40 weeks of the year they set up camp in many towns and villages It usually takes a crew of 6 men (including Landon and Harley) to erect the fair over a 3-day period. The Fair itself last 3 days, with the crew efficiently dismantling and tidying up before moving off to their next destination. Their last stop before reaching Hatfield Heath, was Irthlingborough on the river Nene. They are travelling next to Dunmow for the town show. Other towns visited are Reach on the edge of the fens, Steeple Bumpsted, Whitchford, East Cambridgeshire. They also visit South Suffolk show and Ipswich, plus many more. One popular event they enjoy is the Point to Point and Camel racing (yes real camels) which takes place at Coleshill, Northaw EN6 4NT. Next date to be announced! I was made so welcome by June we thoroughly enjoyed our chat. She was extremely pleased as were her daughters because they had a just welcomed Tommy Lee a brand-new bonny grandson (5 weeks premature) into their fold. It is hoped he will carry on the family’s tradition of the travelling fair. I look forward to their safe return next year. HilaryAllen. A German autumn word The German language has a specific word to describe the feeling you get when kicking through fallen autumn leaves as you walk. This word is ‘Herbstlaubtrittvergnügen’, and is made up of: ‘Herbst’ (meaning ‘autumn’), ‘Laub’ (meaning ‘leaves’), ‘tritt’ (meaning ‘kick’) and ‘vergnügen’ (meaning ‘pleasure’ or ‘enjoyment’). by Amar

7 7 Hatfield Regis Local History Society Patron: William Gosling - Lord of the Manor President: Patrick Streeter In June, to coincide with the Hatfield Heath Festival, the Society mounted a small exhibition in the Institute. The exhibition featured images of the paintings of Mark Fisher, a respectedAmerican artist who settled in this country and for a number of years made Hatfield Heath his home. He painted many local landscapes and the exhibition highlighted several that were known to be of the village. Mark was born in Boston, USA in 1841. He first came to Europe (Paris) in 1863. Later in 1871, he again visited France (Normandy) before subsequently settling in Britain. From 1901 until his death in 1923, Mark lived at Hatfield Heath at the property called Little Noggins (now Hatfield Haven). Thanks are due to Douglas Coe of Sawbridgeworth for information about the artist and for inspiring the exhibition. Two images of the paintings are attached below. - The first is of the Stortford Road, looking towards the Heath. It shows Little Noggins on the left hand side whilst a horse and cart is waiting on the right next to the old steam mill. - Secondly is a view looking towards the Stortford Road from a position near the junction of Pond Lane with the Sawbridgeworth Road. In the foreground is a pond outside the property Little Eden and on the right can clearly be seen the Waggon and Horses public house (now known as The Thatchers). Mark Ratcliffe Harvest Festival Service at HHURC On 17th September, we held our Harvest Festival Service at HHURC. The service was conducted by Rev'd Blair and we were also joined by our friends from Holy Trinity, we were also joined by Jeshuran and Mirnali and members of their families, who are getting married here on the 30th of September. It was lovely to have a full Church. The Church had been decorated beautifully with Harvest themed plants, food and decorations. For our Harvest Service we had requested donations of toiletries and dry goods which will be divided between Harlow and Sawbridgeworth food banks and The Whitechapel mission. Yet again this year HH responded magnificently with many donations. We also decided that our Offertory would be shared between The Libyan and Moroccan disaster funds and I am pleased to say we raised £334.00. After the service a delicious lunch was served, a big Thank you to Judith Foster for her fantastic catering and for everyone who made the day so successful. John Jackson HHURC Elder/Treasurer. PS.Another fantastic photograph can be found on the back page! Letter from Cllr Susan Barker Dear Hatfield Heath Residents, I am pleased to see that the resurfacing on the Stortford Road and the Chelmsford Road has been completed. I will be discussing other Highways matters with the Parish Council and the Cabinet Member for Highways in early October. A lot of publicity was given to the issue of Essex Residents not being able to access Bishops Stortford “dump” earlier this year. I am pleased to confirm that that decision has been reversed and you can visit. Just like Essex you do have to book. Susan Barker [email protected] Tel: 01245 231250

As most of you will be aware, Hatfield Heah Primary School were one of the schools affected by the RAAC. Unfortunately, the school had to close one of their buildings. The staff had to spend time, in the rising temperatures, moving classrooms – furniture, resources, displays etc to make sure that school could open for all pupils, as opposed to just some year groups. The communication from the school to parents has been brilliant. They secured porta-loos and a large structure for extra classroom space very quickly. There were children expected to start primary school for the very first time and the staff made sure that this could still go ahead. I would like to say a huge thank you to all of the staff and governors at Hatfield Heath Primary School for making sure that all of the children could come back to school together. It is clear to see that the staff have worked tirelessly and will continue to make sure that learning remains fun and safe for the children who attend. Thank you. We are lucky to have such a wonderful team of people working in our village school. From the parents of the children at the school.

9 9 Leisure Hour We had an excellent turnout for our first talk of the new season with 33 people attending. Our presenters were well known to most of us as village residents, namely Jessica Foster and her dad Steve who delighted us with their personal experiences of New Zealand. They, along with Jude, had been on an 8 week tour of North and South Island, accompanied for much of the time by close family members who live in North Island. They left the snow behind in England on Boxing Day 2022 and flew via Singapore to Auckland to some welcome sunshine. As well as wonderful scenery, the family embraced some exciting challenges including a flight in an 8 seater plane, canoeing, jet boating, sand dune sledging and even luging down a craggy mountain side. Their photos showed us how much they had enjoyed being with the family and embracing the natural beauty of the islands. Our next meeting is on Wednesday October 4th where Janet Seward presents, “I do like to be beside the seaside,” a history of English seaside traditions from the 18th century to the present day. Please join us if you can. Annual membership £10, Visitors £3 a session. 10 10 NEWS FROM THE GARDENS OF EASTON LODGE October is the last hurrah for visitors to the Gardens, as we close to visitors the end of the month. It is usually a lovely month, with autumnal warmth and lots of colourful squashes, weird shaped tromboncinos and pumpkins ripe for picking and selling and the dahlias and roses still looking lovely. It is also the month when the Autumn Crocus/Winter daffodil pop up and of course the trees start to turn their autumn shades. For kids it is a time for gathering conkers and making dens in the wood. Sunday 15 October is our final full Open Day and together with Wendy’s Petcare Services we are planning a dog show to make it a special day out for all the family. There will be dog classes, for the cutest puppy, handsomest dog and prettiest bitch and we are encouraging owners to think about Halloween costume for their dogs too! Essex Police Dog handlers will be with us and Dr Alex to offer veterinary advice. There will be a number of pet food and other stalls, and as usual we will have plant, crafts and the Trust’s produce stalls. Open Thursdays continue to the end of October. They are a time for visitors to see the Trust’s volunteers hard at work. We will be taking the last cuttings of the year – if those taken in August and September haven’t thrived, which is always a possibility as our volunteers aren’t around daily to tend them and the beds we use for cuttings in the walled kitchen garden can get very hot and dry. And we will be starting autumn planting – of bulbs and of shrubs and perennials being moved or newly established before the winter cold arrives. For more information go to www.eastonlodge.co.uk/whats-on. Jill Goldsmith How to help a dog that is constantly barking Dogs bark for many different reasons. A dog may bark to express how they're feeling - for example, when they're excited, frustrated, bored or scared. If a dog feels threatened, they may bark to tell somebody to stay away or to leave. Other times, dogs may bark because they want something in particular, such as their favourite toy. Dogs may also bark when they're in distress - for example - when they're left alone. Barking is a form of communication and is a completely normal dog behaviour. However, if the amount your dog barks increases or becomes excessive, it can be a sign that something isn't right and it may also cause problems for other people. If this happens, it's important to address any underlying problems which could be causing your dog to bark more. If your dog is barking excessively or more than usual, there may be an underlying health issue - for example, any problems with your dog's hearing could be causing the barking. If you suspect your dog's hearing is suffering, or there may be something else wrong, always speak to your vet. If your dog is barking when you're not around they may be experiencing distress when you are not present. Separation-related anxiety can show itself in a number of ways including barking. The good news is that there are things you can do and if you've recently welcomed a dog or puppy into your family it's really important to show them that being left at home is nothing to worry about. The RSPCA have devised some simple steps to help gradually increase the time you leave your dog alone. Look up https://www.rspca.org.uk/adviceandwelfare/ pets/dogs/behaviour/barking. The steps include associating the experience with something pleasant (for example, treats and toys). Remember every dog is different. Progress at a speed that suits your dog's reaction - and never extend this to the point that it becomes distressing for your dog. As dogs bark for so many different reasons, it's necessary to discover what the cause is. Asking for advice from an expert can help you to understand what is causing the behaviour and they'll also be able to point you in the right direction for help. If your pet develops a behaviour problem, you should start by asking your vet for advice. Your vet can check to see if your dog is ill or injured as either could be a cause of behaviour issues in your pet. If your vet can't find anything wrong, they can refer you to an animal behaviour expert. t's important to find an accredited behaviour expert. A behaviour expert must have up-to-date knowledge or skills to treat pets with behaviour problems. Outdated advice or methods could make your pet's behaviour worse. The Animal Behaviour and Training Council sets and oversees standards of professional competence. This also includes animal welfare in the training and behaviour therapy of animals. ABTCRegistered Clinical Animal Behaviourists and Veterinary Behaviourists have been trained and assessed as having the right skills, knowledge and experience to support you and your pet. ABTCregistered specialists will work with you to identify the cause of your pet's behaviour problem. They will develop structured treatment plans that are suitable for you, your pet and your circumstances. #BangOutOfOrder - RSPCA Campaign Thousands of pets, horses and livestock are affected by fireworks. Many hurt themselves in reaction to the noise and flashes or, in the worst cases, it can cause death. Fireworks are harming our pets Fireworks have an impact on owners and their animals, all desperate for the unpredictability of fireworks to stop. Most reports are from private displays Organised local events will generally receive prior notice through advertising and word of mouth. The timings for these events are also arranged within a timeframe to attract families. Sadly, private displays are much more unpredictable and harder to regulate. It becomes impossible for neighbours to prepare their pets, horses and livestock properly. Calm your pet during firework nights with Classic FM Playing relaxing music is a great way of helping your pet. Change firework regulations to protect animals We want to see fireworks regulations changed to protect our pets, wildlife and farm animals. We're not calling for a ban, simply tighter regulations and consideration of others. https://www.rspca.org.uk/getinvolved/campaign/fireworks

1111 Cllr Mark Lemon shares a letter from Uttlesford District Council regarding waste collections Dear Councillors, Emptying the bins remains one of the services Uttlesford District Council is most proud of. Come rain, shine or snow, our lorries are out and about and our loaders and drivers work through it. The month ofAugust is always really challenging for us every year – our staff book their family holidays, and temporary staff we get in with the best will in the world don’t always know the district as well. Driving 32 tonne lorries through the medieval streets of our historic market towns and modern housing developments with poor parking is a genuine skill! This year, things have been even tougher, and this has led to problems with a small minority of household collections. There have been a combination of factors, but one bigger than all the others: the waste transfer centre that we drive everything to to unload, operated by Essex County Council, has moved from near Dunmow to Braintree – and this means an extra 90 minute drive every time we need to unload, which is at least once in a typical shift. An extra 90 minutes on the road is inevitably time in which someone’s bin isn’t getting emptied. Our fleet of trucks is getting on, and 3 of the vehicles have had to go in for repair so far inAugust alone. We’ve both hired in replacement trucks and used our spare vehicles, but they are smaller, so less gets collected before we have to run to the waste transfer centre, so putting all this together, a small number of villages or bits of towns have been missed some days. We’ve also had an unusual degree of staff sickness and a few other management issues to contend with. We take pride in our work, so are genuinely sorry when we let down residents, even if it is a small minority of them. For obvious reasons in the hotter weather, we will be prioritising any missed food waste collections with a dedicated food waste vehicle running round separately, the next day wherever possible. For recycling though, on those occasions from now on where we run out of capacity, we are often going to ask the residents to make do until the next fortnightly round. The nature of our recycling is that these bins shouldn’t contain anything that is going to go rotten and smelly anyway. I very much accept we need to get better at communicating. So, from now on when it becomes clear to us in a day that there might be a village that we are not going to be able to get to, we undertake to email the district councillors for that area, the parish council, and where we have access to a village Facebook page, also share the news there – including whether we are confident we can get back to that village the next day to catch up, or else have to ask them to keep their recycling til the next scheduled fortnightly round. When we do miss a village, we will make sure that we prioritise that village in subsequent weeks, even if that means pulling a crew off another village, so that the inconvenience is only very occasional in any one area rather than repeated. I remain genuinely proud of our waste crews, and I am sorry that this combination of factors outside our control has meant that a small minority of households haven’t had the usual level of great service at times. Peter Holt Chief Executive Uttlesford District Council THE HUNDRED PARISHES SOCIETY www.hundredparishes.org.uk Thatch has been used as a roofing material for thousands of years. It was once common in rural areas because the material was cheap and readily available. Now, a thatched roof is much more expensive but the skill of the thatcher can still be seen throughout The Hundred Parishes.Athatcher undertakes a fiveyear apprenticeship with a master thatcher before becoming a master thatcher himself. Most properties in the UK use either long straw, wheat reed or water reed. Many thatched properties are listed and when re-thatching is needed there is a requirement to use the same type of material as before. In medieval times wheat grew to nearly 6 feet tall, while today’s modern farming methods produce shorter-stemmed wheat and this has weakened the straw and its longevity. Now specialist growers produce tallerstemmed varieties, grown especially for thatching. There is some debate about the longevity of a thatched roof. To some extent, life expectancy relates to the material used, but it is also dependent on factors such as pitch, orientation and air circulation.A good thatch will typically last from 20 to 50 years, providing excellent insulation. The ridge, along the top of the roof, will last between 10 and 20 years, so requires more frequent attention.Traditionally a new layer of material is laid over the seasoned roof; this is called “spar coating”. The bundles of straw taken up onto the roof are called “yelms”. Twisted hazel sticks known as “spars” or “gads” are used to secure the thatch in place.Athatcher may mark his work by placing a distinctive straw finial on the ridge.Thatch appears not only on houses. There are several thatched pubs, a thatched church at Duddenhoe End in the parish of Elmdon, and a partly-thatched village hall inAshdon. (P04). Main points were: - Proposed construction of 2 no. bungalow dwellings and electrical substation Lea Hall Dunmow Road Hatfield Heath Essex CM22 7BL Ref. No: UTT/23/1966/FUL | Strongly Object: Original plan under UTT/19/3173/FUL was approved in June 2022 with these two additional new build bungalows specifically refused. The PC position is still the same that these are in the Green Belt and outside the village envelope and no attempt is made to justify them on the ‘other grounds’ that allowed the other new builds to be approved - Application to discharge condition 3 (Great Crested Newt method statement) and 4 (Biodiversity enhancement strategy) attached to UTT/22/1786/HHF. Down Court Matching Road Hatfield Heath Essex CM22 7AS Ref. No: UTT/23/1790/HHF | No Objection - Amendment to UTT/22/1261/FUL regarding the land to the West of Mill Lane Strongly object.
