On 17 April the Hatfield Regis Local History Society
Hatfield Heath met in the URC Upper Room for a talk by Sandra Saban
on the Imperial, later the Commonwealth, War Graves
& Commission. As well as being a Hatfield Heath parish
councillor, Sandra has been a member of the British
INSTITUTE Legion for many years, and is a standard bearer, like her
husband Mick.
Are Available for She began by talking about Fabian Ware, who became
the commander of a mobile unit of the British Red Cross
Children’s Parties in the Great War. Under his leadership, his unit began
recording and caring for all the graves they could find.
Small tables and chairs now available By 1915 their work was given official recognition by the
War Office and incorporated into the British Army as
Celebrations the Graves Registration Commission. In May 1917 the
Imperial War Graves Commission was established by
including Royal Charter, with the Prince of Wales serving as
President. Once land for cemeteries and memorials had
Wedding Receptions been guaranteed, the enormous task of recording the
details of the dead began. By 1918, some 587,000 graves
Classes etc., etc., had been identified and a further 559,000 casualties were
registered as having no known grave.
PREFERENTIAL RATES Three of the most eminent architects of the day - Sir
FOR Edwin Lutyens, Sir Herbert Baker and Sir Reginald
Blomfield - were chosen to begin the work of designing
LOCAL ORGANISATIONS and constructing the cemeteries and memorials. Rudyard
AND Kipling advised on inscriptions. Garden designer
Gertrude Jekyll advised on the planting and the
LOCAL RESIDENTS architects created a template of a walled cemetery with
uniform headstones in a garden setting. Blomfield's
For Details Telephone Cross of Sacrifice and Lutyens' Stone of Remembrance
were the formal features. During the 1920s over 2,400
01279 730 544 cemeteries were constructed in France and Belgium,
while work progressed in Italy, Egypt, Palestine,
Macedonia, Mesopotamia and Gallipoli. The Menin
Gate Memorial at Ypres, which commemorates the
names of more than 55,000 men on 1200 panels, was the
first memorial to be designed. Tyne Cot in Belgium, the
Helles Memorial on Gallipoli, the Thiepval Memorial on
the Somme followed. Later individual member states
erected memorials to their own country's dead: the
Canadians at Vimy Ridge, the Australians at Villers
Bretonneux and the South Africans at Delville Wood.
The Commission continues to preserve its cemeteries
and memorials. Renovation and maintenance forms a
major part of the Commission's responsibility. Each year
around 20,000 headstones are either replaced or
repaired. Occasionally military remains are found. These
casualties are buried with honour in one of the
Commission's war cemeteries. In 2009 the discovery of
250 Australian and British casualties from the Battle of
Fromelles required the construction of an entirely new
cemetery, unveiled in 2010. By preserving the memory
of the dead with simple dignity and true equality, the

Commission hopes to encourage future generations to 01279 882 822
remember the sacrifice made by so many.

WEED KILLER
OVERKILL?

Dear Bruno,
Once again weed killer has been applied to the
Heath.
In front of my house are two quite large areas, once
green, now turning yellow and soon to be bare
earth.
Our Parish Council are concerned for the heath.
When the electricity company left a strip of bare
earth and stones our Council took action .It was
seeded and fully reinstated.
Yet our Council allow their own contractor to apply
weed killer to areas of grass in front of the houses
and shops on the Heath (as well as other areas) for
all to see. This leaves for all the summer large bare
patches that look awful. It lets the whole village
down. It makes us look cheap and uncaring..
I have written before on this subject. Does no one
care, including our Parish Council?
Yours sincerely,
Michael Ronan

SLOWDOWN IN CHEAP FLIGHTS GIVES

BOOST TO BRITISH ECONOMY

New figures published by the Office of National

Statistics show that the British are taking almost

20 per cent fewer overseas holidays compared

to three years ago, whilst the number of foreign

tourists visiting the UK is virtually unchanged.

This means a major boost for the UK Balance of

Payments and shows that the Government’s

policy of increasing Air Passenger Duty (APD)

is actually benefiting the UK economy, contrary

to the claims made by the UK ’s major airlines.

The latest statistics show a decrease in over-

seas leisure trips by UK residents from 60 mil-

lion to 49 million between 2008 and 2011

leading to a reduction in the UK ’s tourism trade

deficit from £20 billion to £13 billion. Inbound

Pond lane tourist numbers fell by just 300,000 over the
same period.

Hatfield heath CM22 7AB The figures are a powerful endorsement of the
argument long put forward by Stop Stansted
