Events & activities throughout June - including details for our very own ‘Hatfeld Heath Festival’ on Sunday 25th Most of us will be familiar with the story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears but how many of us have ever considered whether Goldilocks could be guilty of breaking and entering? She was after all found asleep in Baby Bear’s bed when the family returned from a walk in the woods but would a jury, after hearing all the evidence, fnd her guilty of such a crime? This was the theme of this charming play where fairy tale and nursery rhyme characters are called as witnesses and the audience, as the jury, delivers their verdict at the end of the evening. Read the full review by Decia Ranger at https://www.noda.org.uk/show-reports/once-upon-a-crime-the-trialof-goldilocks. Another great review, by Your Harlow, is featured on page 9 and a local connection to the storyline is revealed too, which continues on to page 26!

7 ffiat0eld egis fflocal ffiistory %ociety Patron: 4illiam %osling 5 !ord of the &anor President: Patrick fitreeter /ur April meeting was a short tal0 on the history of St 1ohn the Evangelist church at 2ush End given 3y 1ohn Mon0. In the 14506s there was a movement to 3uild new churches for growing population in the area of the original Hat7eld 2road /a0 parish8 with the living of the two new church parishes under the patronage of the vicar of Hat7eld 2road /a0. Hat7eld Heath6s Holy 9rinity church was dedicated on 4 August 145: 3y the 2ishop of ;ochester and St 1ohn the Evangelist was consecrated on Friday 5 August 145:. In 1:2: the living at St 1ohn6s 3ecame vacant and pastoral care reverted to the vicar of H2/ and is now under the Six Villages clergy. For 3oth new churches a <edication Stone was unveiled on the same day under the east window tracery. At St 1ohn6s it records that on 4 1uly 1456 it was placed 3y Sarah8 daughter of the late Stanes Cham3erlayne of ;yes. She is reputed to have 7nanced the 3uilding of the tower herself 3ut the remainder of the church was 3ac0ed 3y 1ohn Archer Hou3lon of Halling3ury Place. /n display at the meeting was the original 145= Altar Frontal tapestry which was made in Ipswich8 still in pristine condition. 9he church was designed for seating 145 poor people 3ut no de7ned children6s seating. After WW1 the musical ;ev. FW >ilpin8 vicar of H2/8 gave an organ in memory of the fallen. 9his remained until a3out 2000 when due to it re?uiring wor0 to 0eep it up to standard8 it was sold to 2irch Church near @ayer Marney and a new electronic organ purchased. 9he original dedication plate was retained. 9he small churchyard has no CW>C graves 3ut has an /lympian cyclist8 Mr Stuart8 3uried there as well as a Hat7eld Forest Forester Mr Cotrell. Sarah Cham3erlayne also left a provision of A500 for education of local children. As the village school closed in 1:45 this fund was forgotten a3out in the church until the <iocese of Chelmsford contacted the 9reasurer recently wanting to close the fund as it had not 3een used since 1:53. 9he church has decided to pass the funds8 now over A10008 to the H2/ village school to meet the original intent. 9his was an interesting tal0 that helped 7ll gaps in our 0nowledge of the church history and local 3enefactors. /ur next meeting is the Summer /uting with details yet to 3e con7rmed. /ur evening meetings recommence on 9uesday 1: Septem3er at =.30pm in the Hat7eld Heath B;C Church Hall. 2 9 As May issue page 9 but with Heath 5layers review continued from front page * replace gardener wanted with book grants below "nce #pon a rime 5 +he +rial of %oldilocks I0>1 is like a boA of chocolates with The Heath 5layers. You never know what you are gonna get. And so it was with @nce 3pon A -rime. This was The Heath 5layers presenting a family show, in what director )oanne Gladstone called a Jswitched up fairy taleK. @ne of the frst challenges of directing must have been the ffteen people on the stage at any one time. 4e say stage, as this was Hatfeld Heath Lillage Hall, where space was at a premium . And so it was a miracle that they ftted in a courtroom, a stage and a cottage all in a very confned area. 1ach character was very defned but what each actor did was make each character their own. Gem -olton was near perfect as Goldilocks as, when deciding is she was guilty or not guilty and seeing her act out the prosecution and defence versions of her alleged crimes, you were never Euite sure if Goldilocks was nice or nasty. The different characters worked so well together. The Three Bears were a joy with 1ve Marie2 ,owney probably stealing every scene she was in as Baby Bear. The cameo of the evening was )essica >oster as The -ow who claimed she saw the whole thing as she was jumping over the moon. There was just something out there and hilarious about her performance. As we said, each actor made the part their own but it could have been very easy for actors to ham it up but this was a classic Heath 5layers performance where they acted as an ensemble. And it was all the better for that. Again that is down to great directing. 4ith such rich characters and characterisation, it felt like plays within plays. Hansel and Gretel .-hrissie 4aites and Becks Lincent/ were a great double act, bouncing off each other. The legal teams were also eAcellent. )udge >armer .nice shorts/ played by Steve >oster had a wonderful <oscoe 5 -oltrane accent. Henny 5enny .)aki =ewman/ and Tom Thumb .Steve 5erry/ were very good as defence and prosecutors. The running theme of JsmallMlittleK jokes was very well delivered. 4e probably have not mentioned all ffteen actors but please rest assured they all played their part. =ot all of them had to be outlandish but they all keep the narrative going and the audience entertained. This really was a team game. As this was a family show, it was good to see an audience of all ages really enjoying the show. A special mention to @ld Mother Hubbard. 4e were told ,ot Sharp is 98. 4e are sure we all hope to be involved in community theatre when we are 98. 0t was clear that a lot of hard work went into this. 0t was worth it and was a real testament to Heath 5layers virtuosity and ability to really entertain. 5 fiource: ?our )arlo9 0t transpires that the story of NThe Three BearsN .as it was originally known/ has a very local connection. 0t was originally written down and illustrated in a book in 7;97, for the fourth birthday of Horace Broke, by his aunt 1leanor Mure. The same Horace Broke who for most of his life lived in Gladwyns on the edge of our village, and whose family have various memorials in Holy Trinity -hurch. .Read more about the local connection on page fflfffi. 1oo2 3rants 9he parish council invites applications for a 3oo0 grant from students at the start if their university or college careers. 9he grants are aimed at providing some help to defray the cost of text 3oo0s that students are re?uired to 3uy for their courses. Please apply to the parish cler0 at [email protected] is no speci7c closing date and applications will 3e considered at the next availa3le council meeting. A big !ank You to the Village Magazine Committee for providing the funds to purchase this trolley. !e URC hall is used by many village associations as well as the church and the moving of the current metal framed chairs is now a whole lot easier. At our neAt meeting we willH 2 Agree a fnal constitution. 2 Select a chairperson and vice chairperson. 2 >ollow up proposals for a communication strategy including a dedicated website and large notice board in the village and agree these. 2 0nitiate the neAt steps in the process to gather supporting background information. 2 Take the initial Euestionnaire responses and eApand them into a more focussed community survey .essentially produce a much broader survey re?ecting your comments to the Euestionnaire/. Again, please e mail nigelrobleyGyahoo.co.uk or call on 68;87::7;79 if you are interested in any way, so that we can hear about your different opinions which are all valuable if we are to re?ect the views of the whole community. Thank you, 2 =igel <obley 4orld ;icycle ,ay The 9rd of )une each year is celebrated as U4orld Bicycle ,ay’, and this year will be no different. <ead on to fnd out how the occasion came about, and to learn about the origins of the bicycle itselfB T4orld Bicycle ,ay was established in 267; through a resolution by the 3nited =ations .3=/ General Assembly T0n 7;78, a German named +arl von ,rais developed the frst incarnation of what we now call the bicycle. Although von ,rais’ vehicle was steerable and had two wheels, it did not have any pedals. So, you propelled yourself by paddling your feet along the ground in a walking motion. TThe word Ubicycle’ frst appeared in 1nglish in 7;6;. UBi’ is a Iatin prefA meaning Utwo’, and Ucycle’ comes from the Greek word Ukuklos’ meaning Uwheel’ by mar *ontinued from page /. However, in 1leanorNs book, believed to be based on an oral version that had been around for a while before, the intruder into the cottage was an old vagrant woman rather than a fair haired girl. And she didnNt escape through the window, but ended up impaled on a church spire after previous failed attempts by the bears to burn her and drown her. @ne wonders what sort of nightmares Aunt 1leanor risked inducing in her young nephew, and whether the painstakingly hand2written and drawn book was a gift of love or torment. The original copy was found in Toronto in 79:7, and predated the previously accepted original by <obert Southey in 7;98 .also an old woman/. But 0 guess there could be more than one Horace Broke?
