"!!3 F34% ! 5635 I often have to apologise to people who in the distance may have recognised me, and waved but to me seem like a fu==y blur. I may have waved back and smiled but really, I have no idea who they were and generally more often than not don>t stop to fnd out but carry on the way I was heading?it>s as if I>m wearing blinkers or am really more short:sighted than I actually am. I fnd that these blinkers don>t come out <ust to embarrass me on dog walks but happen @uite often. I>ve set on a course?and off I go. This season of Lent for example, I bought a book written by a lecturer of mine from Theological College ABr Caul Bominiak D The Falling of BuskE, and I was going to read it through Lent A<ust a bit but fnd the time for it every dayE. It would be easy to say D yes I>ve got the Lenten devotions box ticked, giving up chocolate and reading this book. However, if we do <ust that we close ourselves off from the real purpose of Lent, our blinkers are on we become short sighted seeing only what is near to us. It>s a bit like the account of Ceters testimony in the book of Second Ceter. The writer addresses a broad audience of both Fews and Greek:speaking ChristiansH those that have converted to Christianity. Suggesting that rather than make life choices associated with their new beginning in with Fesus, they have become short: sighted seeing only earthly things around them and are blinkered to the spiritual, to the bigger picture. The writer reminds them of their responsibility D which put simply is to live a Christian life. Ceter>s testimony of the Transfguration Awhere Fesus, having led Ceter, Fames and Fohn to a high place is transformed wearing brilliant white and shining like the sunE is a glimpse into the bigger picture, it>s a reminder of the reason why devotion and discipline during Lent are important. It is a blinker>s off, big picture view of the glory of God in full technicolour. It is da==ling and powerful in its imagery and it>s a stark reminder of why we these forty days of Lent are far more important than <ust giving up chocolate or reading a book. They are flled with discipline, penitence Abeing truly sorry for the things we have done, and not doneE and devotion to the God whose son came to save us by dying on the cross and whose resurrection we celebrate and give thanks for on Easter Sunday. You may have a sense that there are area>s of your life where you have had blinkers on, or are <ust seeing the here and now rather than connecting on a spiritual level. It may be that you have never been to church, and cannot see why you would want to. 5ell, my Lenten challenge for youH Aif like me giving up chocolate is invariably not going wellE is to Itry churchJ, whether that means coming on a Sunday or connecting with one of the regulars/7inistry team or <ust stepping foot inside the building and having a look around. I>d love to chat with you about your experience D but please don>t <ust wave from a distance! Grace and peace Revd Becs Challis A thing or t7o to kno7 a8out .pring9 How you defne the frst day of Spring depends on whether you are referring to the astronomical or meteorological Spring.. Looking at the astronomical calendar, the frst day of Spring for 8983 is 89th 7arch. 7eteorological seasons are instead based on the annual temperature cycle and measure the meteorological state, as well as coinciding with the calendar to determine a clear transition between the seasons. The meteorological seasons consist of splitting the seasons into four periods made up of three months each. These seasons are split to coincide with our Gregorian calendar, making it easier for meteorological observing and forecasting to compare seasonal and monthly statistics. By the meteorological calendar, spring will always start on 6 7archH ending on 36 7ay. The seasons are defned as spring A7arch, April, 7ayE, summer AFune, Fuly, AugustE, autumn ASeptember, October, NovemberE

Nationally, this showed that the population of England grew by NS in the last 69 years and 64S over the last 89 years. Locally, the increase has been much faster. The population of The Hundred Carishes in 8986 was around 65N,999, up 68S since 8966 and 84S since 8996. If roads seem busier, these extra 39,999 people are a ma<or factor. Half of the increase is accounted for by N parishes close to Stansted Airport. Elsenham, Flitch Green, Great Bunmow, Little Canfeld, Stansted 7ountftchet and Takeley have each expanded bymore than 59S in the last 89 years. Another big growth was seen in Buntingford: from 4,399 in 8996 to Q,M99 in 8986. The Census is the modern e@uivalent of the Bomesday Book produced in 69RN AB when the national population was less than 8 million, compared to N9 million today. Today, RS of the Hundred Carishes population was born outside the KK Acompared to 6QS in the whole of England and 5alesEH 69S of homes are Lats Av 88SEH 3NS of houses have 4 or more bedrooms Av 86SEH 8QS of homes are rented Av 3QSEH 49S of adults work at home Av 36SEH 55S are in professional or managerial <obs Av 4NSEH 5NS of households have 8 or more vehicles Av 35SE. 5e have a different age mix to the KK average, with a shortfall of around 5,999 people in their 89s and 39s offset by around 5,999 extra people aged over 49. 5hile the previous paragraph highlights contrasts, some statistics are closely aligned with the national picture: MMS of households have central heatingH 5S of households have a second homeH56S of the population is female and 4MS male. 18 OUT 8 Ga)e #,+$+.77 The world can feel heavy and dark sometimes and kindness can instantly ease this. Kindness is always a tonic. It has perspective to make things softer and easier. Kindness can help people heal. Tackling confict with kindness, rather than anger or annoyance, can help us to practise a deeper level of understanding to another person's plight. This in turn can completely reframe our own outlook on life. No matter how small, kindness makes a difference. So keep implementing the ripples of kindness everywhere you go, for yourself and for others, because sometimes even the smallest of ripples together can make a wave. - Sent in by Kim Butler HOWE GREEN HOUSE SCHOOL Independent Co-ed Prep School for 4 to 11 years and Little Oaks Nursery School for 2 to 4 years www.howegreenhouseschool.co.uk 01279 657706 for a life less ordinary... Helen gave us an insight into how she came to be an artist and the paths that took her to where she is today. :t the age of ; she had shown an interest in drawing and painting and is still using the same tin of paints she had then, though presumably they have been reflled many times over! 4ven at that young age she knew that she wanted to become an illustrator. Helen told us how as a young girl she had written a letter to <uentin Blake about his drawings and how delighted she was to receive a reply. :s an adult she had the good fortune to meet <uentin, but feeling overwhelmed she couldn=t ask him what she wanted to know. So she wrote to him with the questions she had intended to ask and was again thrilled to receive a reply with answers to her questions. :s well as bringing some wonderful watercolour paintings, gift cards and printed gifts, Helen demonstrated some techniques of watercolour painting. In just a few minutes, with the additional aid of cling7flm and kitchen roll, Helen produced a miniature seascape which looked so easy to do but I expect it isn=t! :fterwards she showed us how to make a soft representation of spring >owers with just a few strokes of a pencil, watercolours, brush and dipped pen. Helen runs classes from her studio and from the way she described them they sound a lot of fun. If you would like to know more about her work here is her website www.helenwiseman.co.uk. (/ 'otes from the #illage #et As spring approaches and the weather improves, those of us lucky enough to own a dog will be able to spend more @uality time outdoors. But as well as physical stimulation from walks, it is really important to exercise a dogUs brain. This can be particularly useful if dog or owner have been confned to the home by illness or in<ury : a lack of walks can lead to boredom, frustration, anxiety and destructive behaviour. Brain games for dogs, using food and toys can be a way of exercising their minds and keeping them occupied if walks are off the agenda. One of the simplest games using part of your dogUs daily food allowance is scatter feeding or search games which encourages natural foraging behaviours. Start by scattering food over a small area and once your dog has mastered this, hiding small piles of food in progressively more diffcult places will keep them stimulated and occupied. If the dog is becoming frustrated, guiding them closer to the food or throwing bits of food in the right direction to act as clues will help. There are numerous pu==le feeders available in pet shops or online but these can be made at home using a rolled up towel with treats inside or a cardboard box with scrunched up paper inside, obscuring bits of hard food. Croblem solving by getting treats out of a Kong toy or similar helps to mentally tire your dog and help to fulfl their natural instincts. Stuffng food into a Kong can start with easily accessed treats or dried food and can progress to more diffcult items.
