22 Welcome to your June 2024 Issue of the Hatfield Heath Village Magazine Ever feel like you’ve bitten off more than you can chew? That’s how I feel right now, with a deadline looming that I told myself was not going to be a problem to achieve. Little did I reckon with a heavy dose of real life getting in the way - I don’t think I’ve done an allnighter like this since I was a student. Being a former journalist is one thing, but I never had to really lay out the pages. So, brimming with overconfidence and wilful ignorance, I decided in my first edition to try to implement an entirely new style. And as a bonus, I’ve probably included several typos for you find and mutter over. The result is an inauspicious start to my tenure in the hot seat! Before you reach for the brickbats and demand I return your village magazine you know and love (bring back Dawn!) let me try to explain what I am trying to achieve with this revamp. I want to give the magazine a community feel, with pictures playing a bigger role. There’s a huge amount of things going on in our village, we just need people to be more forthcoming in telling us their good news. You may also notice there is a reduction in the amount of posters within the editorial section of the magazine. I plan to remove these and incorporate their content within the editorial, helping to improve the flow. This is going to be a work in progress, but hopefully it’s a bit more cohesive for next month. Thanks for reading, I’m off to sleep for a week… Ciaran Gold Editor Inside this month’s edition Front Page: Friars Lane Pages 3 to 11: News Page 8: Contacts for clubs, groups and organisations Pages 12 to 14: Hatfield Heath Parish Council Pages 15 to 27: Advertisements Back Page: Local photographs ADVERTISING: We offer 4 sizes and duration options. Hounds of The Heath By Carol Leach Men’s Shed HATFIELD Heath Men’s Shed is gaining a reputation for making church noticeboards. Word spread after they replaced both noticeboards at the village’s Holy Trinity Church. Now, they have recently completed a board for St Martin’s in White Roding and have received a few other enquiries from local churches. Members are currently busy making items to sell at the village festival. Last year bird boxes, bug hotels and hedgehog houses proved popular and this year they’re adding seed trays and planters to their repertoire. They were also recently donated a women’s bicycle to repair and sell. Almost a year on from opening, the Shed has 35 members with a core of about 12 meeting each week on a Friday or Wednesday evening. There have even been times when members have turned up and not been able to find a space, so had to retire to the coffee room to drink tea and eat biscuits. Annual membership is £20 and a £2 fee per week, plus a contribution to the tea/ snack fund. The Shed is part of the Essex Shed Network and operates under the umbrella of Hatfield Heath Village Hall Trust, which is a charity. Building up the order requests Men’s Shed putting their skills to use ROOMS: Tony Bushell with a bug hotel FIX: John Smith adds finishing touches Motorcyclists with distinction Flower festival date TRINITY: A flower festival and plant sale is due to take place in the church grounds this month. Held from noon to 5pm on Sunday, June 23, the theme will be ‘Animals we know and love’. Plant donations are appreciated and should be arranged with Hilary on 07891 860553. More than 160 classic bikes rode through the Heath on their way to Down Hall on Sunday, May 19 as part of the Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride in aid of Prostate Cancer UK.

4 By Festival Organisers THE Hatfield Heath Festival, which originated in the early 1970s, saw a hiatus until 2007 when a dedicated group of volunteers breathed new life into it. With the exception of 2020 and 2021, it has been an annual gathering ever since. The festival's primary goal is to foster community cohesion within Hatfield Heath, operating independently of commercial interests. Participation from various village clubs and groups is encouraged, with proceeds from their activities benefiting their respective organisations, a portion of which contributes to the festival's expenses. A heartfelt acknowledgment extends to the committee members and volunteers whose tireless efforts ensure the event's smooth execution. Special gratitude is extended to Michael Hockley for generously providing the straw bales for the arena setup. Furthermore, immense appreciation goes out to all sponsors. Their support, primarily from local businesses, sustains our community event. We are really pleased to announce that this years Fun Run has been kindly sponsored by Jack Butler, owner of Butler Fitness. He has kindly offered to warm everybody up prior to the start of the race, which is 1.5 miles for children and 3 for adults. When the festival was resurrected in approximately 2007, after a few years break, father and daughter duo John and Sarah White were asked if we would run the car show again, to which they agreed as cars are a passion for the White family. It’s a very popular show, with many entrants returning year after year. The type of vehicles attending varies enormously with anything from an Austin Seven from the roaring 1920s to a Studebaker half ton American pick up. There is normally a display of motorbikes as well as more modern vehicles; we don’t turn anything interesting away. One of our entrants also brings along a selection of bicycles in various forms; one being a jet bike. There is no charge to enter; our policy is that if people are good enough to spend time preparing their cars for the show and then bring them along, they shouldn’t have to pay to do so. Since John passed away in 2020, it has passed to Sarah to keep the show going. She said: “This I couldn’t do without the help and support of all my family – Melanie, Dave, Nicola, Ross and Richard, and my loyal band of helpers who turn up on the day, come rain or shine, Martin, Cyril, Duncan, Simon, Richard and Wendy. “As a family we thoroughly enjoy the show and it is one of the first things entered on our calendar each year and our family business J E White Motors are proud to sponsor the event. “We hope you enjoy looking at the classic cars this year.” THE main stage is outside Hunters Meet. 77 D-Day remembrance and beacon lighting ROYAL BRITISH LEGION: A reminder that in commemorate of the 80th anniversary of the D-Day landings, the bellringers of Holy Trinity church will be ringing at 6.50pm on June 6. This will be followed at 9.15pm by the lighting of the village beacon. The legion will be organising refreshments in the Village Institute and would love as many people as possible to attend, since this is likely to be the last big celebration of this event. A new memorial bench will hopefully be fitted in time for the events. Orchard speaker URC: Elizabeth Lainer Pole will be talking about the Rivers Orchard in Sawbridgeworth at the Gardening Club’s next meeting on Wednesday, June 26 at 2pm in the URC hall. By Diana Graves Church Warden, Holy Trinity Church WITH only three weeks left until our current Year 6 campanology club finishes, it was wonderful to chime bells for a Sunday service. The children were very excited to ring the bells for an actual service, for the whole village to hear “it’s time to come to church”. Families joined in with us as we ate bacon butties in the sunshine listening to the usual team ringing in rounds and spotting changes in bell order. We engaged in a fresh expression of church as we used large nativity figures to hold bell ringing clues. I had a great advantage hiding these figures as they blended with grave stones but the team found all six clues in the end. We are very thankful that our Tower Captain, Gerald, has made a full recovery and was able to see the progress our pupils have made on Bell Ringing Sunday despite his absence. We could not have run these sessions without the generous support of local Bell Ringers who have continued to pitch in. I would like to thank Trevor Haynes, Fred and Mary Bone, Steve Poulter and Peter Tottman, you are stars - thank you. It is hoped that sharing time together on Bell Sunday will help the transition from attending the year 6 Bell Club to ringing with the adults easier for those who wish to keep developing their new hobby. Kids take control of church bells Children chime in for Sunday service MASS APPEAL: Trinity Sunday service Services at Trinity during June HOLY Trinity Church is open to the public during daylight hours. Your sense of humour though will only get better. Your intuition will grow and expand like a majestic cloak of wisdom. Your ability to choose your battles will be fine tuned to perfection. Your capacity for stillness, for living in the moment, will blossom. And your desire to live each and every moment will transcend all other wants. Your instinct for knowing what and who is worth your time, will grow and flourish like ivy on a castle wall. Don't prioritise your looks my friend, they will change forever more, that pursuit is one of much sadness and disappointment. Prioritise the uniqueness that makes you you, and the invisible magnet that draws in other like minded souls to dance in your orbit. These are the things which will only get better. Donna Ashworth

8 By Quentin Spear Hatfield Regis Society AT our April meeting we welcomed back Tim Turner to give us the benefit of his Sworders experience in commenting on members items where required. He started us off with a visiting international rugby team photo that his grandfather was involved with the game. With 34 members attending and the majority with an item, it was a full evening. In the main, it was the family history connection that was the talking point the objects brought out. We had military memories of a 1914 Queen Mary gift box to the troops as well as trench ware, a WW2 naval waterproof cape used at Normandy and two Cold War items – an RAF jet pilots flying helmet and a Civil Defence siren from Sheering. Child’s play Household items included a Victorian child’s hoop, a handmade copper kettle c1880 from Hallingbury that has survived acting as a child’s play toy during the 50’s/ 60’s, a selection of jewellery still in their original boxes indicating where purchased and WW2 Ration Books with the local shop that would accept them. Scattered through the evening we had a few presentations that matched the objects for entertainment value. David Robarts from Hallingbury brought along an old farming instrument – a small handheld maltster’s machine. Placing barley seed in the upper container and shaking to get seeds in the available holes, a disc shaped knife then cuts the seed in half and allows the cut face to be inspected in the lower half. The colour and firmness of the displayed kernel allows the maltster to assess the crop and offer a price. He nearly got a clean sweep of the audience knowing nothing of this instrument but a lone hand went up to say he had worked with a corn merchant and remembers the tool. Master of the Heath Players, Steve Foster, came with his father‘s flying record book from the Second World War. He had joined the RAF in 1937 and was a WT/Air Gunner in Hampden bombers. He took part in the first bombing raid on Berlin as well as the first 1,000 bomber raid of the war. Having done his 30 ops at just 20 years old, he was rested as an instructor before joining a Canadian bomber squadron. In a twist, the crew flight engineer turned out to be the father of Antiques Roadshow military expert, Mark Smith. Andrew Passfield brought a Sworders 1880 handbill detailing the sale of some cottages on the Heath at auction, while our secretary Mark, brought along two wall hangings made by a German at the POW Camp 116 in the village. A large object swathed in a curtain turned out to be a mirror with an etched design on the plate glass covering. Tim smartly ducked out of making a comment because in the audience was nonother than Alex Froggatt, Glass and Decorative Arts expert at Sworders. We then had a definite Antiques Roadshow explanation, pointing out the decorative surround and oriental looking tree leaves etched on the glass as early 20th Century and English manufacture. He also described the method of etching that allows such fine detail to be obtained and that he was born in that manufacturing area so has a head start in understanding the works. Outlandish Topping and tailing the evening were two books, with our President offering a book of ‘true’ outlandish tales published in the 1920’s that his father (a manager of a ruby mine in deepest Burma at the time and quite a trump card to casually insert in conversation) set out to expose as fiction but the publisher seeing the sales figures decided for profit over truth. Your reporter went for age, with a copy of the King James Authorised Version of the Bible, printed in 1648 – that’s 18 years before the forerunner of the present URC church started meeting on the Heath. A very enjoyable evening with probably 75 per cent of those attending contributing in some way, so no wonder we slightly overran but had plenty to talk about. ■ Our next meeting will be the Summer Outing to Gladwyns, Hatfield Heath on Saturday, June 29. Numbers are limited and must be booked with our secretary Mark Ratcliff (07963 069609). 8 Members’ show and tell keeps Tim on his toes Recalling a century of a great British newspaper tradition KNOWLEDGE: Ex- valuer Tim Turner Antiques expert sheds light on history club’s mementos Asides from news stories, newspapers also often contain crosswords for readers to enjoy, writes AMAR VASANI. This year marks a century since Britain’s first newspaper crossword was published. It appeared in an edition of the Sunday Express in 1924. The world’s first newspaper crossword came earlier than this, being published in a 1913 edition of the ‘New York World’. The idea came from the then editor of the publication – a Brit named Arthur Wynne who emigrated to the USA in the late 19th century.

9 9 By Ken McDonald Hundred Parishes Society THE Hundred Parishes includes much of the extensive barley-growing area of the Hertfordshire and Essex borders. The malting of barley in preparation for use in brewing was a significant activity in several of our larger villages and market towns, especially along the River Stort, from the 18th to the 20th centuries. Evidence is still to be found in the form of place names indicating the location of former maltings, such as Maltings Lane in Much Hadham and Chrishall; and in the names of buildings that were once maltings or associated with one nearby. Thus there are a number of Maltings Cottages, as in Linton, Bartlow, Much Hadham, Aspenden and Ugley; and Old Maltings as at Manuden, Arkesden and Great Chesterford. In Little Hallingbury there is Malting Farm and The Old Brick Malting. As well as conversion to private houses, surviving maltings have been renovated and converted to a variety of uses. Great Dunmow’s is now a museum and community resource. In Wethersfield, the maltings is now the village hall and shop, while the station maltings in Newport and those in Central Arcade in Saffron Walden are commercial. Multi-storey maltings in Sheering have been converted into apartments and in Stanstead Abbotts to a business centre. The classic form of a malting reflects the processes which took place within. Grain was hauled in through the lucam or hoist housing at one end of the building where it was then steeped in water to start the germination process. The grain was laid out on germination floors before growth was halted at a particular stage by applying heat in the kiln at the other end of the building. The process of initiating and then halting germination is known as malting. Raising a cheer to all our maltings of yesteryear Buildings shaped in a particular way to enhance process NEW USE: Stansted Abbotts’ Malting is now a business centre PREPARED: Maltings, such as the one in Sawbridgeworth, played a key role in preparing barley for its eventual use in brewing

At the time of writing, we have had a fair response but really not enough for us to believe we can properly represent all of your feelings and ideas, so we are going to extend the deadline by on further month to the 30th June to try and get as many of your ideas as we possibly can. Please give the questionnaire your priority. It takes very little time to fill in and if you don’t have a view about something or don’t know how you feel, just leave that bit blank. Again, the completion instructions in the questionnaire are self-explanatory, but if you have any problems just e-mail us [email protected] or give me a call on 01279 730568 and I will try to help. Extra copies of the questionnaire can be obtained either by contacting the same email address or picking up from Footprint. We really look forward to reading your replies and will of course provide a summary to you all once we have analysed all of the data. If you want to complete on line, go hatfieldheathneighbourhoodplan.weebly. com. This plan will form part of the statutory Development Plan for Hatfield Heath, and any future decisions on planning permission must be made in line with it. There are no right or wrong answers, we simply value your personal opinion. ■ You can take your completed copies to the drop boxes at Footprint, Village Hall, Institute, The Close and the Co-op.
