‘THAX’ THE WAY WE LIKE IT!
Hatfield Heath School FC is once again leading the way in
the West Essex League as the campaign reaches the half-

the table, three points clear of Thaxted.

And it is Thaxted who are proving to be the Heath’s closest
rivals. The holders have a 100 percent record in the league
so far, with the second-placed side winning all their games

Many other fibres can be used to make garments and
one I have recently tried to grow and prepare for spin-
ning is flax. This is a very prolific crop and has deli-
cate blue flowers in the summer. It is ready for
harvesting around 100 days after planting in April and
has to be pulled out of the ground. The thin stems about
3ft in length then have to be retted so that the hard core
is rotted and the fibre extracted. I tried the method
called dew retting and actually left the flax laying in a
field for about two months and in that time the stems
