22 Welcome to your November issue of the Hatfield Heath Village Magazine. November brings a shift in the weather, marking the transition from Autumn to Winter. It is a great time to get outside and is important for our mental health to stay connected with the natural world. You might be surprised by how much can be found on your doorstep. For more information visit www.nationaltrust.org.uk, www.woodlandtrust.org.uk and www.wildlifetrusts.org. Notable dates for November include 5th November, celebrated as Guy Fawkes Night or Bonfire Night, marking the failed Gunpowder Plot. Diwali is the Indian ‘festival of lights’ - a holiday celebrating the triumph of good over evil. This year, Diwali is celebrated on 12th November but, in most of India, it consists of a five-day celebration that peaks on the third day. Please take care if you are around fireworks or bonfires and think of others living nearby when planning an event in your own garden. Many people, pets and wildlife are terrified by the sights and sounds created by fireworks and the extent of this fear can cause death. Please make your neighbours aware if you are planning to set off fireworks so that they have the opportunity to implement coping strategies like having a safe place arranged in the home, playing classical music or using other calming techniques. On 11th November we observe Remembrance Day, (also known as Armistice Day or Poppy Day), to honour members of the armed forces who lost their lives in the line of duty during World War I and subsequent conflicts. The day marks the start of the peace process with the armistice signed between the Allies and Germany that ended hostilities on the Western Front of World War I. This armistice took effect at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918. On Remembrance Day, people observe a two-minute silence at 11am to pay respects to fallen soldiers. The day serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made during times of war and fosters a sense of unity and gratitude for the freedoms and peace that people enjoy today. The red poppy became associated with Remembrance Day because, despite the devastating effect of war on the land, the delicate but resilient bright red Flanders poppies grew and flourished in their thousands. Royal British Legion adopted the red poppy as a symbol of remembrance in 1921. It has since become internationally recognised for raising vital funds from the sale of RBL red poppies and donations go directly towards helping the Armed Forces community. The purple poppy is a symbol of remembrance in the United Kingdom for animals that served during wartime. The Purple Poppy Appeal is organised by the War Horse Memorial and gives donations to charities like World Horse Welfare and the animal charity, Blue Cross. The purple poppies are also sold through charity Murphy's Army and funds raised go the National Foundation For Retired Service Animals (NFRSA). I hope that you enjoy celebrating November in ways that are important to you. Please stay safe and warm during the colder weather and the darker evenings. 66 Hatfield Heath Men’s Shed Hatfield Heath Men’s Shed hosted a meeting of the Essex Shed Network Forum with representatives from 10 Essex sheds attending. There was a presentation from Braintree company British Offsite, explaining their business and how surplus materials might benefit the shed network. One of the visiting sheds donated some surplus tools which were gratefully received and members exchanged ideas and discussed projects The Hatfield Heath Shed for goes from strength to strength with several new members signing up in the past month. Shedders are busy making Christmas decorations for sale. They include wooden Christmas trees in various sizes, wooden stars and tealight holders. Details/prices will be posted shortly on the Facebook Group. They’re also working on other items such as bird tables, owl boxes, hedgehog houses, bird houses and various community projects. Men’s Shed is a space men can get together and take part in practical projects, socialising and helping combat social isolation, particularly among older men who maybe have lost their partners. A larger version of a typical garden shed, it is a space for local men to learn new skills, share existing ones and make new friends over a shared interest and a cuppa. The shed is open on Wednesday nights 6.30-9pm, Fridays 10am – 3pm and first Saturday of the month 10am – 1pm and visitors are always welcome. For more information visit the Hatfield Heath Men’s Shed Facebook page, email [email protected] or call Mike on 07968 066015 or Simon on 07966 382839. It derives from the Arabic root ʻksmʼ meaning ʻdividingʼ. ʻKasımʼ was supposedly chosen as the word for November because this month ʻdividesʼ the seasons of autumn and winter (i.e. the end of autumn, and/or the beginning of winter, typically falls during November). by Amar
7 7 A busy month at the URC We had a very joyful, busy September at the URC. As previously recorded in last monthʼs magazine, we enjoyed a fantastic Harvest Festival Service, the decorations were left in place and on the Wednesday after our Sunday service, most of the children and staff from Hatfield Heath Primary School attended a Harvest Service. Some of the Children had written and read out their own prayers and they all sang some great harvest hymns. The Children were impeccably behaved, it was a joy to have the building so full of young people and hearing their joyous voices. The School and Parents/Guardians should be incredibly proud. I also heard many comments from local people who said how delightful it was seeing the children walking from the school to the Church with the older children pairing up and holding hands with the younger children. I must also add that the school brought many gifts of food stuffs for our food bank charities. On Friday the 23rd of September, we held a Macmillan afternoon tea. We were firstly, wonderfully entertained by the Bishopʼs Stortford Woodwind Band, who played a variety of music and sing-a-longs, which was great fun. This was followed by afternoon tea and cakes in the hall. A wonderful sum of £240.40 was raised for the charity. Finally, on Saturday the 30th we hosted a Tamil Wedding between Jeshuran and Minarli, the family spent the Friday decorating the Church in traditional style. Our former Minister Revd. Sam conducted the ceremony assisted by our minister Revd. Blair and pastor Paul Fellows. The bride wore a traditional white wedding dress, but many of the guest wore very colourful beautiful saris. Once again it was wonderful to see such a full church and a truly joyous day. John Jackson HHURC Elder/Treasurer. SANDRA’S SABAN’S MEMORIES HATFIELD HEATH 1958 At 16 years of age on 28th January 1958 Mike Saban met Sandra Selby when stationed in Nottinghamshire., He was in the RAF Ordinance and Explosive Department. (No mean task)! It must have been exciting to travel down to Hatfield Heath to meet Mick’s family. The first person she recalls meeting after alighting from the bus was Chubby Sapsford. (He became a larger than life, longtime friend). Janet Bayford, a local lass was in Mike’s home, 20 Ardley Crescent, along with Mike’s mum who was cooking sausages for lunch. Electricity was being installed for the first time in the Crescent with the old Interovens being ripped out. The bedrooms still had gas lighting. Sandra’s first impression of the Village was its neat and tidy appearance especially the Heath itself. Jack Gunn with Fred Gunn (not related) and Fred Jackson cleared out ditches and the grass was kept short with hedges being trimmed on a regular basis. In 1958 there were approximately 200 or so dwellings on the Heath When Sandra came to finally live on the Heath in September 1958 she worked in Spirilla’s of Harlow. Close friendships were made with Val Jackson and Margaret Perry who were young ladies who had also moved to the Heath. Hatfield Heath’s Football and cricket teams were highly active then. Hatfield Heath Football Club had a brilliant team. Many medals were won over the years. They played on the old ground which is now the site of Bentley Villas. The Nichols brothers, Reg and Roy Howard, Bob Gerrard, Sugar Perry, John Roberts, and Cliff Moore who also played football for Essex. Other gentlemen Alan Wilkinson, Howard and John Gunn, Malcolm Jackson, Jim Coe, Ron Jones, Brian Bayford all thoroughly enjoyed the games for Hatfield Heath Football Club, (Apologies for those people who have been missed). Mrs Pyle and the wives made and served refreshments during the half time breaks. During that period football club finals were played in the Bishops Stortford Football Ground. Eric Halls used to run coaches full of supporters to the ground. On occasions when the football trophy had been won it would be transported triumphantly to The Fox pub where it would be filled to the brim with ale and enthusiastically emptied. The cup then was walked to the White Horse pub for refilling then on to the Stag to be replenished again, finishing off long and merry days with Mary and Eric Halls. Chubby Sapsford would entertain with his great voice with everyone joining in. Happy days. When cricket was being played on the Heath the local lads would gather with the ladies and play cards in the sunshine. Mick especially remembers the Search brothers, Derek the youngest had the highest score for the Cricket Club for many years. To finish off, Sandra recalls one morning when an elderly lady (Mrs. Hutchins) took her hand and said that the young man Mick Saban was a ‘good boy’. Then warned her that you have to live in Hatfield Heath for 15 years before being accepted into Village life! Happily, I can report that being a ‘new’ resident of 5 years I have been welcomed into the village fold. There are many memories which we hope you enjoy reading. More will follow (hopefully) next month. HilaryA. NEWS FROM THE GARDENS OF EASTON LODGE By November we have reached the end of the season and closed the gates to visitors. In September we had a fine day for our Open Day and welcomed regular visitors and new ones. We have lined up October to be a fun finale – with our last Sunday Open Day and a Halloween event for children at the Gardens. When the Gates have shut, we turn our thoughts to major projects for the closed season. Last year we put in a new path from the Italian garden to the walled kitchen garden. Visitors have really appreciated it and it is already well bedded in. This year we are planning to complete the project, so the path starts from the car park and we can make the entrance area more welcoming. Once it is complete the path will help visitors see the glory of the Gardens even when the grass is very wet! You can see more about what we are up to through the closed season by following us on Facebook or Instagram; looking at the Garden News on our website; or signing up for our e-newsletter through our website: www.eastonlodge.co.uk. 8 8 UPDATE FROM CLLR SUSAN BARKER I enjoyed a happy few hours in early October delivering a leaflet around the Heath. I met with some residents to have a chat and ended up having a pint in the White Hart with my helper. Potholes in Broomfields ( a road managed by UDC ) were reported to Councillor Lemon, the kerbstones outside the White Hart re reported. A meeting with Councillor Scott and the Parish Council escalated the kerbs, the blocked drain and the missing bollards here. The Parish was further updated on progress on realigning both the B183 and the A1060 junctions. The potholes outside the Fish Inn were on my 18 pothole list and should be done soon. I have also been out and about with the MP over the last couple of months visiting the CAB at Dunmow Library, the Buffy Bus, Central Connect ( now Vectare) who told us about their plans to improve the service, particularly the 305 and IPSEA, based in Takeley, who are specialists at giving advice to parents of children with special needs. Kemi is keen to meet all sorts of businesses so if you know of a company who would like a visit please let me know and I will pass on. Please do get in touch if you need any advice. 9 9 Leisure Hour We had a very enjoyable presentation in October by Janet Seward on the history of the British seaside from the 18th century to the present day. We were treated to some excellent slides which were the starting point for Janet to explain how the many aspects of the British seaside began. Much of the history could be gathered from drawings and paintings of the period. We learnt that prior to the late 18th century the coasts of Britain were viewed with some suspicion. The thought being that it was a place for the working class to bring in the fish, skipper the boats or at worst smuggle contraband into the country. If you had a tan, it was because you were a labourer and therefore thought of as lower class. Spa towns such as Bath and Cheltenham had been popular for a long time as places to go to improve your health but it wasnʼt until 1789 when King George 111 visited Weymouth that nobility started to follow suit and other coastal places also became popular. The first bathing hut (looking like a shed on wheels) appeared on Margate beach in 1814 and was towed into the water by strong men known as “Dippers,” who then assisted the fully dressed ladies into the water. In 1826 the very first pier was built in Brighton and was known as the Chain pier. It drew more visitors, many of whom would arrive by train or by paddlesteamer. Southendʼs pier (which is still the longest in the UK) was deliberately built a long way out so that those on the paddle-steamers could alight onto dry land at any time and not have to wait until the tide was in! By the 1850s, the seaside had become more of a place of leisure than for onesʼ health and in 1860 when the railway was extended to a station near Margate beach, more and more people could travel there easily from London. To begin with holidays were common but once Bank Holidays had been introduced by Lord Lubbock in addition to the postharvest and factory shut down periods, people flocked to the seaside for relaxation. It was soon apparent that people also wanted to pack as much fun as possible into their day trip, weekend or holiday, so additional amusements were developed. Blackpool Tower was built in 1894 and at that time had its own circus, Bournemouth set up the Winter Gardens in 1875, Brighton Palace pier opened in 1899 and Southend produced the Kursaal in 1901. In 1938 the “Holiday with Pay Act” was passed which allowed workers 2 weeks off without losing pay. People had more money to spend and the idea of the Holiday Camp began. The first Butlins camp was erected in Skegness in 1936 and proved so popular that others followed. Many well - known comedians such as Roy Hudd and Dave Allen started their careers as Redcoats, keeping the customers happy and providing entertainment. By the late 1950ʼs the “Baby Boomers” had more time and money to spend on holidays and with the launch of improved aviation, the Package Tour was created and our sights were on distant shores like sunny Spain! We learnt a huge amount during the talk and also enjoyed reminiscing about past holidays and family memories. Our next meeting is at the URC Hall 2pm on Wednesday November 1st Martyn Lockwood - “A policemanʼs lot is not a happy one,” a light-hearted look at the life of a policeman in Essex from 1840-1945 Membership £10 yearly or come and join us as a visitor for £3 a session. ADVICE FROM AN OLD MIDWEST FARMER Words that soak into your ears are whispered....not yelled. Forgive your enemies, it messes up their heads. Do not corner something that you know is meaner than you. It don't take a very big person to carry a grudge. You cannot unsay a cruel word. Every path has a few puddles. When you wallow with pigs, expect to get dirty. The best sermons are lived, not preached. Most of the stuff people worry about ain't never gonna happen anyway. Don't judge folks by their relatives. Remember that silence is sometimes the best answer. Live a good, honourable life...then when you get older and think back, you'll enjoy it a second time. Don't interfere with something that ain't bothering you none. If you find yourself in a hole, the first to do is stop digging. Sometimes you get and sometimes you get got. The biggest troublemaker you'll probably ever have to deal with, watches you from the mirror every morning. Always drink upstream from the herd. Good judgement comes from experience and a lotta that comes from bad judgement. Letting the cat out of the bag is a whole lot easier than puttin' it back in. If you get to thinkin' you're a person of some influence, try ordering someone else's dog around. Live simply, love generously, care deeply, speak kindly - leave the rest to the universe. Most times, it just gets down to good ol' fashioned horse sense! Sent in by Kim Butler
10 10 NOTES FROM THE VILLAGE VET Animals feel anxiety too! We are all aware of the anxiety that some animals feel around this scary time of year, with Halloween closely followed by Bonfire night, but levels of anxiety in animals tend to go up in proportion to how we are feeling as owners. The things that cause stress to us such as the cost of living crisis, wars and political unrest can indirectly be passed on to our pets, meaning they can suffer anxiety over prolonged periods of time. In the same way that lockdown caused a lot of dogs to be anxious, many of us are going through some turmoil at the moment that has had a knock-on effect on our pets, to the extent that many pets are sadly ending up in rescue centres which are bursting at the seams. Symptoms of anxiety in pets can contribute to them having to be rehomed; in dogs this can be aggression, excessive barking, being withdrawn, destructive behaviour and inappropriate toileting. In cats it can manifest itself as changes in gut health such as diarrhoea or inappetence, toileting in inappropriate places, excessive grooming and aggression. As well as the use of medical therapy, vets often rely on the skill of qualified animal behaviourists to help our patients navigate anxious times. I would particularly recommend the Association of Pet Behaviour Counsellors (APBC), whose members are extremely well trained and give excellent advice. Pre-empting behaviour problems by contacting an APBC member that offers one-to-one help with puppies and rescue dogs is a great option. We are lucky to have Natalie Neal who can offer this service locally. (07787176589, [email protected], apbc.org.uk). If you are struggling with your pet’s behaviour, speak to your vet before resorting to rehoming, who can refer you to one of these amazing professionals and offer advice. Pauline Sell Veterinary Surgery, 07970 651710 HBO WI October Meeting October bought a thought provoking speaker to HBO WI. Kerry Eastman gave us a real insight into the work that goes on at the charity Streets2Home. A homeless charity based in Harlow that with just 10 staff and 20 volunteers, provide outreach support services to those who are homeless. This work see’s those sheltering in and around both the town and less populated areas, such as local woodland visited by the team to encourage them to visit the charity’s day centre. From there, those who are marginalised, homeless or in danger of becoming homeless find a warm welcome, an opportunity to talk and get practical support for their next steps. The day centre offers 3 meals a day and somewhere to recharge and review some of the personal challenges facing each of them. Residents can learn new skills and it was heartwarming to learn that one of the training opportunities is based around ‘one pot cooking’. The charity provides ongoing and practical support through their 2 houses where newly welcomed residents can prepare and learn skills to enable them to live independently again and the staff and volunteers will stay alongside their residents as they move into their new permanent homes. We heard an inspiring story of a young woman who found herself homeless and vulnerable and with the help of Streets2Home is now living her own independent life and has a career as a police constable. We were very pleased to welcome new members this month and if you are thinking about it, then contact Sue Brown on 01279 718620 or speak to any HBO WI member you may know and we will be pleased to welcome you to our Autumn programme, with the next meeting being on Tuesday 7th November 7.30pm in HBO village hall. November see’s us welcoming a speaker who will share insights into the work of medical sniffer dogs. Intriguing! Melanie Wharton A big THANK YOU to the staff and volunteers from the patient panel at Eden Surgeries for running the flu and covid vaccination clinics. Gardening Club Wednesday 22nd November URC Hall 2pm We will be holding an AGM followed by a demonstration given by Hannah Shine of making a wreath and other decorations. Many hurt themselves in reaction to the noise and flashes or, in the worst cases, it can cause death. Fireworks are harming our pets Fireworks have an impact on owners and their animals, all desperate for the unpredictability of fireworks to stop. Most reports are from private displays Organised local events will generally receive prior notice through advertising and word of mouth. The timings for these events are also arranged within a timeframe to attract families. Sadly, private displays are much more unpredictable and harder to regulate. It becomes impossible for neighbours to prepare their pets, horses and livestock properly. Calm your pet during firework nights with Classic FM
1111 Our return to meetings in September saw Dr Christopher Thompson of Wivenhoe talk about father and son Barringtonʼs, Sir Francis (1560-1628) and Sir Thomas (1585-1644) for the period 1603 – 1644. Dr Thompsonʼs research into Sir Robert Rich of Leez Manor, 2nd Earl of Warwick (1587-1658), made him realise that the Barrington family during that period have the largest family records in English archives, shedding light on both their political life and their home estate and Essex County work. During the 1500ʼs, Essex remained a mainly agricultural county with little change in methods but the population had doubled, leading to a general fall in living standards. For the landed gentry this could cause tensions in dealing with the general population. Dr. Thompsonʼs talk was concerned with the period starting with the accession of King James in 1603 and the lead up to the Civil war following Charles II accession in 1625. Sir Francis Barrington was a staunch puritan and educated at Cambridge and in 1579 married Joan Cromwell, aunt of Oliver Cromwell. He visited Geneva in 1581 to see the Protestant church in action. On returning he inherited the family estate and for the next 20 years he was a JP, in Militia, A Deputy Lieutenant of the County and held various jobs in the Essex county administration. He was elected to Parliament in 1601 as a Shire Knight and was prominent in promoting Puritan ideals for Church governance. In 1614 he refused to pay the King James Benevolence levy on wealthy subjects and stood down from Parliament. Re-elected as Senior Shire Knight in 1620 but in 1626 he again refused to pay another Kings Forced Loan. For this he was put in Marshalsea prison but during the winter succumbed to illness and was released, initially on the Kingʼs orders ʻto the whole of Surreyʼ until the Council released all those imprisoned for non-payment of the Forced Loan in January 1628. Whilst his health improved and he was returned to parliament later in the year, he died on 3rd July. His wife of 43 years proved to be a redoubtable support, interested in politics and with firm opinions that needed to be heeded, she also oversaw family marriages to ensure family continuity and took interest in the poor of the parish, at one time supporting 1 in 7 of the population. Sir Thomas Barrington was also a puritan and educated at Cambridge graduating in 1601 and entering Grayʼs Inn in 1602. He married Frances Gobert in 1611 and they had 6 sons and 2 daughters before her death in 1623. In 1624 he remarried widow Lady Judith Smith (nee Lytton from Knebworth) and inherited his fatherʼs title in 1628. On his first marriage he took over Barrington Hall whilst his parents moved into Hatfield Priory nearby. He later inherited extensive estates in Essex, Yorkshire and Isle of Wight. His father is likely to have encouraged him to stand for Parliament, gaining the seat of Newtown, IoW in 1621, which he held until 1629. Charles II then ruled for 11 years without Parliament but in 1640 he then was returned for Essex in both the Short and Long Parliaments until his death in 1644. In the 1630ʼs he became increasingly dissatisfied with the actions of Charles II to raise money when not granted sufficient by Parliament (e.g. Ship Money) and when on the Bench was lenient to those prosecuted for non-payment. In 1642 he was a very effective administrator for the Parliamentary cause in Essex, helped by having the contacts with Cromwell and the Eastern Association Army especially when Essex sent an army to defend London from a potential Royalist army threat. A very interesting talk showing how local gentry have played their part in shaping national history. Our next meeting will be on Tuesday 21st November at 7.30pm in Hatfield Heath URC Church Hall when Tony Tuckwell will give an account of a walk along the whole length of the Essex coast in 2010-11. Quentin Spear. Hatfield Regis Local History Society Patron: William Gosling - Lord of the Manor President: Patrick Streeter THE HUNDRED PARISHES SOCIETY www.hundredparishes.org.uk Before the 15th century, people attending a church service would stand or kneel. When benches or pews were introduced, they were sometimes decorated by skilled craftsmen. In particular, the top of the ends of some pews were carved with figures called finials or poppyheads. The word poppyhead comes from Latin via Old French meaning the poop or figurehead of a ship. Poppyheads can be found in churches across the country and they are particularly prevalent in East Anglia. The Hundred Parishes has some fascinating examples. The carved figures can represent almost anything. Some are of flowers or fruit or animals. Mythical creatures or demons were introduced to remind parishioners that if they led a sinful life they would go to hell. Saints and angels however meant that if you lived a good life you would go to heaven. You will also find carved creatures depicting saints. In St. Mary’s, Hatfield Broad Oak, 300-year-old poppyheads symbolize saints, (pictured below), with a lion for Mark, a bull for Luke and an eagle for John, while Matthew is represented by a ‘divine man’. Ickleton’s parish church has some fine examples of medieval carved poppyheads. One shows St. Michael weighing souls of the dead and another features a dragonlike creature. In Wendens Ambo parish church you will find a fearsome-looking beast which you may meet if your soul goes to hell! Linton’s church has a wide range of subjects including scribes resting their books, one on the back of an angel and another on a dragon. When you are out and about, I encourage you to seek out these wonderful examples of ancient craftmanship.
