TIME FOR BAA James Gardening Service

TO ACCEPT DEFEAT AT STANSTED All Garden Works
& Odd Jobs
Stop Stansted Expansion (SSE) has condemned BAA’s
suggestion that it will apply for judicial review of today’s 01279 651 498 07963 989 851
final verdict from the Competition Commission (CC) ordering
BAA to sell Stansted Airport by the end of next year. We offer a
SSE Economics Adviser Brian Ross commented: “The Complete Service
uncertainty has gone on far too long and BAA should now
respect the ruling of the Competition Commission and the DESIGN
courts and sell Stansted as quickly as possible. CERAMIC TILING
He cautioned against a repetition of the appeals process which
enabled the original CC ruling to be deferred for over two LIGHTING
years: “BAA’s statement today in response to the Competition WOODWORK ETC.
Commission ruling suggests it is considering a fresh challenge
in the hope of buying yet more time so that Stansted is sold All carried out with the minimum
under better market conditions. Such procrastination would of fuss and mess by experts!
only worsen relations between the airport and the community Also all Plumbing &
which it has already done so much to destroy.” Domestic Heating Installations
“Our hope is that with a new owner in place there would be
an opportunity for genuine and meaningful dialogue based on SO LOOK NO FURTHER THAN
maximising the local benefits of the airport and minimising its
adverse impacts on the community,” he continued. C.F OAKES
The long running saga began five years ago in June 2006 with
the launch of a study into BAA’s dominance of the UK Established in Harlow for over 45 years
airports market by the Office of Fair Trading (OFT). The OFT 19 SERVICE BAY, WYCH ELM , HARLOW
concluded in March 2007 that competition was being
distorted by BAA’s ownership of the three largest London
airports and the major Scottish airports.
As a consequence the OFT referred the matter to the CC for
more extensive investigation and two years later (March
2009) the CC ruled that BAA must sell Gatwick, Stansted and
either Edinburgh or Glasgow airport. BAA accepted the
ruling in respect of Gatwick but launched a legal challenge
against the rulings on Stansted and Edinburgh/Glasgow. The
legal proceedings took almost two years to run their course,
with the Supreme Court finally ruling in February 2011 that
BAA could not take its legal challenge any further.
Undeterred, BAA then argued that circumstances had changed
so much in the two years since the CC’s original ruling that
the whole matter had to be looked at afresh. The CC has spent
the past few months considering this argument and the CC’s
verdict – announced today – is that its original conclusions
still hold good. As a consequence the CC has confirmed that
BAA must sell Stansted by the end of next year.

GREAT ORMOND STREET

On 11th september this
year, we will be running
the Chippenham half
marathon, raising
money in aid of Great
Ormond Street Hospital.
You may have seen one
or other of us hitting the
pavements in recent
months, getting
ourselves fit - Michelle is the one in the bright pink
t-shirt, Lee in red, and faces matching our outfits! If
anyone would like to sponsor us, you can do so via

http://www.justgiving.com/MDawson123

Or alternatively stop us (preferably mid-run so we
can have a breather!) and we can take details the old
fashioned way. GOSH is a great charity, with money
going towards top class treatment, as well as helping
support families to stay nearby while visiting their
sick children - our first hand experience showed us
how worthwhile this is. We would appreciate any
support, so give us a wave if you see us training!

Why join?
“The first time I went along to the group, my baby
was 4 weeks old. She was born in snowy November
last year and I felt quite isolated living in a village
where I had no friends with children and couldn’t
drive for 6 weeks. It took alot of courage to go
along to a group where I didn’t know anyone how-
ever I shouldn’t have been worried, everyone was
really friendly and made us feel welcome. I now
attend the group every week and have joined the
Committee. We meet once every 3 months to talk
about the group, how to improve it, discuss funding
opportunities as new toys are always welcome and
we have also been working towards a good practice
award for the group. I have made some great
friends who have offered advice, made me laugh
and kept me sane through the daunting task of
motherhood!” Suzanna, Mum to Emily, 8 months
old

“I heard about the group when I attended a new par-
ents course at Spangles (The Childrens Centre) in
Stansted. I was gaining help and support from Les-
ley, one of the workers there and she suggested I
came along. I was living in an isolated village at the
time with only a few ducks and my baby for com-

pany whilst my husband was at work. Lesley ex- GLYNN’S CHIMNEY SWEEP
plained that the group was run by parent volunteers
and I was keen to get involved. I have since joined Clean & Efficient
the committee and enjoy the chance to meet other Vacuum & Brush
parents and socialise my daughter with other chil-
dren.” Hannah, Mum to Evie, 18 months old. 01279 424 983

DOUBLE YELLOW LINES AT
BROOMFIELDS

To Hatfield Heath Parish Council.
Dear Council Members
We would like to comment on the proposal by
ECC Highways Department to install double
yellow lines at Broomfields in Hatfield Heath. As
we are all aware, the area around the Broomfields
surgery is heavily used for parking during surgery

22

hours and this situation is greatly exacerbated by

the school run. Parking around the Broomfields

surgery didn’t use to be a problem. It became one

when The Village Hall car park was closed to

parents dropping off children for school. These

vehicles then migrated to the area around the

doctors surgery which is, at certain times of the

day, excessive not to mention extremely

dangerous and we are in full agreement that this

situation has to be resolved before there is a

serious accident at this location. Is the council

aware that there is actually a “Keep Clear” area

between the 2 drop down kerbs of the surgery car

park entrance/exit?? The road markings have all

but worn away and it is not clear that this area

should indeed be kept clear, and as such no

parking should be done here. Should the council’s

first job not be to re-instate these markings? It is

our opinion that installing double yellow lines is

not addressing the basis of the problem only the

symptoms of it. If double yellow lines are installed

we suspect these visitors will simply move to

another location, possibly parking on grass verges

further down Broomfields or in the area around

Cox Ley with its convenient access to the school

via the path at the rear. The decision to install PIANO, ACCORDION & THEORY
double yellow lines will penalise some of the

people who live in this location because of PIANO, ACCORDION &

inadequate and inconsiderate parking by those THEORY TEACHER
who don’t live in the area which seems more than
a little unfair. The ideal solution to this problem Ever wanted to learn a musical instrument?
would be to designate an additional area to
accommodate the influx of vehicles to the school I currently have spaces available during the day
and surgery during these busy periods. As councils for adult tuition.
and residents alike (including ourselves) are

reluctant to lose any of the grassed areas around

the vicinity of the surgery or the school, this

solution is not likely to be achievable.

As residents of Browns Cottages, we have an

option to park a car on the pavement in front of

our house assuming our access is not blocked Former Deputy Headteacher
which it sometimes is. In this event, our only other very effective at raising standards
option is to park either in front of the doctor’s
