and their families

Would like to say a heartfelt thank you for the many
wonderful messages received on the untimely
passing of Peter.
Also thank you to his friends from the theatre world
who produced such an appropriate service of
celebration for him and to all those from so many
parts of his life who contributed.
The family so appreciated the support from the Rev
Stewart Gibbs throughout and to the organist, choir
and bell ringers for their contribution. Again thank
you to the many who attended the service from the
village and to those who travelled to be there. Peter
would have been so proud, if a little embarrassed!
Some have asked if there would be a DVD of the
service. It is now available at a cost of £6 to include
a small donation to Razed Roof (weren’t they
wonderful!). Please telephone 01279 730544 or

Vicar covers the period 1945 - 1955

Call Sid Perry on 01279 899 029 or 0777 622 1975 Rev. F. B. Horsey, " When I came to Hatfield Heath in
1945, we were just beginning to lick our wounds after the
13048 Jan - Dec 2013 war. A direct hit had demolished the nurses cottage standing
almost in the Churchyard ; the west end of the institute was
MEMORIALS open to the air ; the cricket pitch had a large crater in the
middle where a 500Ib bomb had landed, and there were
J. Day & Son various scars all over the village. But things soon got
going again, and it wasn't long before the institute was

Edmonton 0208 807 3712 Mr. Broke and Mr. Wordsworth,—and there had been a
Broke Churchwarden ever since the Church was built.
www.jdayandson.co.uk Unfortunately, within a year of my institution Mr. Philip
Broke died, and Mr Wordsworth left, so the last tie with
1307 Dec 13 P Gladwyns was broken. Their places were taken by Mr.
Bloxome and Mr. Dix, those two remaining as my faithful
wardens till I left. But with their help a lot was done to
improve the Church and Halls. Mr. Jim Button was appointed
manager of the Halls, and in a very short time we launched
a scheme to re-floor the main Hall at a cost of over £200;
Mr. Button also drew up plans to purchase the land behind
the Hall, so that ultimately we could extend the present
buildings and provide changing rooms behind the stage.
Soon after the floor was finished we installed electricity in
the Church, had the gas taken out, and began negotiations for
the land for the extension of the Churchyard. One last thing
remained to be done ; that was to turn the south transept,
(which had originally, I believe, been used for the staff of
Downham school) into a war memorial chapel; all the
furnishings were given by individual people in memory of
those they loved, while the chairs were bought, each one
being inscribed with the name of one from the village who
had lost his life in the war.
My memories of the nine years or so that I spent at the Heath
will always be very happy ones, because the Heath holds a
very special place in my heart. I have known the village for
the past thirty five years, when I used to cycle there from
boarding school at Harlow. My parents lived there and my
family also lived there, so it was more like a home to me than
a Parish where I worked. Mr. Lawton, the congregational
minister, came almost simultaneously, and I can truthfully
say that we had nine years work together in harmony ; we ran
a joint Youth Club ; we had our Sunday School outing on
the same day to the same place at the same price ; and
between us, I think we knew every soul in the district. Of
course, there were many changes during that time. Miss
Harris, who had been part of the village since time
immemorial, and organist for years left—and left us without
an organist. Mr. Dix, who had been as much part of the
Heath as the oak tree in the middle, retired—but before be

DUDFINS LANGLES AND SCUMMERS Tel: 01279 730 274

Meryl Catty, who is well-known in the Hallingburys for her [email protected]
history talks, but was last night making her debut in the www.jewhitemotors.co.uk
Hatfields, gave a talk entitled DUDFINS LANGLES AND
SCUMMERS at the URC Hall (changed from St Mary's, HBO,
because of the roof repairs). Meryl's talk encouraged family
historians to discover not only who our ancestors were, but also
something about the lives they led. This could be done in part by
researching wills and probate inventories. She began by saying
that from about the middle of the sixteenth century to the middle
of the eighteenth, it was the law that when a person died, an
inventory, with valuations, should be made of his/her estate in
order to prevent an unscrupulous
executor or relative from making away with any of the goods.
These inventories, drawn up by a so-called appraiser (or
appraisers) allows twenty-first century genealogists to gain some
idea about what their ancestors owned and were using in their
everyday lives.
Meryl gave some examples. Samuel Gooch, who died in 1647 in
Stanningfield, Suffolk, had no more than the clothes he died in
and his crossbow. He had fought on the wrong side in the Civil
War, and had had his estate confiscated.
On the other hand, when Miles Docker died in Suffolk in 1597,
he left a large country house of 21 rooms and five hearths, and
was obviously living in some comfort, his inventory listing
articles like armour, silver, a chess board, a bible and other
books, worth, Meryl told us, around £330 (then), or £22,000
now.
Houses varied in size, in construction, and in furnishings.
