TRAFFIC CONGESTION
Mill Lane entrance from Stortford Road, rounding the corner of Hatfield Haven, is a blind
turning.
Increased traffic in Mill Lane, with cars unable to pass, will lead to gridlock and road rage.
We can’t let that happen!
Gridlock will lead to cars having to reverse unsafely onto Stortford Road, unseen by oncoming traffic, travelling at
a minimum of 30 mph.
We can’t let that happen!
Traffic congestion in Mill Lane raises the risk of accidents or, worse still, fatalities.
HISTORIC VALUE
The proposed development will lead to a significant loss of local heritage and educational value.
Little remains of the vast majority of PoW camps, most having since been cleared. Only around 10%
of World War II purpose-built camps are thought to still survive, only some being within England.
Preserve our history!
Prisoner of War Camp ‘High Hall’ 116, once housed around 1,500 Italian, Austrian, and (from 1943) German
soldiers captured in the European and North African theatres of the Second World War; often put to work on nearby
farms. It was built in 1941. No political Nazis were housed in this camp and generally residents of such camps were
welcomed into their communities, often being described as polite.
Preserve our history!
After the war, the Germans had to remain for several years after Italian POWs had left. Rather than returning home
to mainland Europe, the inmates would sometimes spend the rest of their lives in the village and the next
generations of their families often visit the village. A government inspector has written of the site, “Camp 116 as a
whole is undoubtably a non-designated heritage asset that is of considerable historic and archaeological interest
given the rarity, association with a national event and the relatively good state of preservation.”

Hatfield Regis Local History Society
President: William Gosling - Lord of the Manor
Our May meeting was a talk by Patrick Streeter on the highlights of the History of Matching and the Lavers.
For Matching he highlighted a local painting of the assembled hunt in 1751 where the attendees names are
known but not their position on the painting. The background farms and buildings are still extant.
For High Laver he concentrated on Otes Manor (demolished in the 1960’s), which had hosted John Lock,
founder of modern political Liberalism, who came to visit in 1690 along with his servant and 50000 books,
staying 13 years! Later in 1714 Abigail Masham retired from Court life to the manor, having been Keeper of
the Privy Purse for Queen Anne (and dramatized in the film The Favourite). Later in the 1900’s the artist
Augustus John rented Elm House for over a year and moved in with his wife, 2 children, 1 dog, 10 cats, 6
chickens and a parrot. They were later joined by his mistress Dorelia McNeill and she gave birth to another
child!
After the grandeur of High Laver, Low Laver lived up to its description with the tales of Rev. Beaucham, vicar
in the early 1900’s, who started to act strangely, at one stage chasing a maid through the vicarage until she
jumped out of a first floor sash window to escape. His attempt to follow resulted in the window closing on his
head. The maid Lilly Rolfe lived in Hatfield Heath until 1975.
Patrick then returned to Matching and the influence of the Quare family. Starting with the first Daniel Quare, a
celebrated London clockmaker (1648-1724) whose fortune and influence allowed his grandson Daniel Quare
(3) to purchase Stock Hall in Matching and his descendants stayed in the area for 180 years. The last was
Ernest Quare (1847-1936) was a keen cricketer and huntsman and he sold his farming interests to fund the
hunting later in life. He built Honington House which was the only house in the village to be bombed in WW2
and had to be rebuilt.
It was an interesting review of the history that an apparently quiet rural backwater can hold and allowed Patrick
to write a well illustrated book on his research – An Account of Daniel Quare, 1648-1724 which fleshes out the
family trees (with repeated names in each generation), personalities and houses lived in by different branches of
the family.
Congratulations to our Vice Chairman Mark Ratcliff for putting together an excellent exhibition on a dozen
topics from the Society Archives for the Jubilee weekend celebrations. The footfall and conversations with
villagers and visitors made it the best yet.
Our next meeting is the visit to the Bishops Stortford Museum for a guided tour on Saturday 25 June at 11am.

NEWS FROM THE GARDENS OF EASTON LODGE
On 2 June our Chairman’s great-niece and nephew did the honours and unveiled the Queen’s Green Canopy
plaque for our Taxodium distichum and we raised a (very small) glass of the first Easton Countess cider ever
produced to toast the Queen. We hope it will all be bottled in time for our Apple Day on 25 September.
And what a lovely bank holiday it was for us and the members of the public who chose to come to the Gardens
on that day. The sun was shining and the dragonflies and damselflies were darting around the Italian garden.
The walled kitchen garden was buzzing and visitors could see the veg and fruit developing nicely. Hopefully
the early June rains will mean that by July we will have harvested potatoes and onions and will be regularly
cropping chard, spinach, beans, courgettes and beetroot for sale.
Our 17 July Open Day is always a fascinating day for our visitors, when we take time to remember the area in
the run up to World War I, as fictionalised in Mr Britling Sees it Through, by HG Wells, from his home in Little
Easton; and the airmen and women based at the Great Dunmow Airfield next to the Gardens. Our archivists put
together a special exhibition for the day and we are joined by others displaying historical information and
artefacts. Perfect Vintage duo get us all singing the classic 1940s songs we all know and love; and children
enjoy the special trail and other activities. Our Daisy’s team will provide our usual fayre of local bacon rolls,
hummus or cheese rolls and homemade cakes. Tickets are available in advance through our website
www.eastonlodge.co.uk or on the Gate after 12.00.
We are also open to visitors on Thursdays through July from 11.00 to 3.00, with drinks and cake available to
visitors up to 2.30pm. This year many visitors on Thursdays have taken the opportunity to quiz our volunteers
on what they are up to – keeping us all on our toes! - Jill Goldsmith

Heatstroke in dogs is a very
serious illness that can be fatal.
Overheating during exercise is by
far the most common cause of
heatstroke in dogs, but in some
circumstances, it can even develop
when a dog simply sits in the heat
for too long. Any dog can develop
heatstroke, but flat-faced dogs are
most at risk because they struggle
to cool themselves down easily. If
your dog has symptoms of
heatstroke, act quickly! Give them
first aid and contact your vet
straight away.
1. Keep them calm and still
2. Take them indoors or into a
shady area
3. Give them a drink of cold
water (not ice, or icy water)
4. Contact your vet
5. Make sure they have plenty of
air flowing around them
6. Put them on top of a wet towel
7. Using cool (not icy) water* to
slowly wet the top of their head,
feet, ears and fur
8. Once they seem a bit cooler,
you can start to pour cool water
over their body (be careful they
don’t inhale any)
9. If possible, continue cooling
your dog on the way to your vet
*Never use ice or very cold water
– this can cause shock

Gardening Club
Our last talk was presented by Brian Carlisle on “Pelargoniums - their varieties and propagation.”
Brian brought along a wide range of colourful pelargoniums that he had propagated himself and told
us about their features and the conditions needed for growth. He has a huge knowledge and
experience of many aspects of gardening including composting and chemical free pest control. Brian
has been to our club before and always gives us an informative and entertaining talk.
Our next talk is on Wednesday 27th July given by Michelle Dyson who will be telling us about Bee
Keeping.
We meet on at the URC hall at 2pm and welcome members and visitors.
There is no meeting in August but we will meet again on the 28th September

Jazz Souled on the Blues (aren’t we all?)
Recent discussions in various quarters have floated the idea of hosting regular Jazz, Soul and Blues
concerts in the Villages. The pandemic and other setbacks have delayed crystallisation of thinking as
to how, where and when but it gives great pleasure to announce the launch of just such a venture,
namely “Jazz Souled on the Blues” at Hatfield Broad Oak Village Hall, Cage End, Hatfield Broad
Oak CM22 7HN.
Friday 8th July 2022 Jan Jackson Quartet
Doors open 7:00pm, Music Starts 8:00pm. Licensed Bar. Tickets £12 on the door.
Jan Jackson Quartet evolved from the Dave Jackson Trio. Jan’s late Husband, professional musician
Dave Jackson, left behind a rich musical legacy. Since forming in Winter 2021, the Quartet has
brought their own brand of retro jazzy blues including renditions of many of Dave’s originals from
the “Living on the Moon” album, to venues such as South Mill Arts Centre, Harlow Jazz Club, Jazz
on the Heath and a sold out charity concert for The Mayor of Bishop’s Stortford.
“Great band…just the right mix of music. Booked for an event that helped me raise
Over £1000 for charity”. Councillor Keith Warnell, Mayor of Bishop’s Stortford.
The Quartet are: vocals / electric upright bass
Jan Jackson - drums
Costa Fafalios - piano / keyboards
Kris Borowski - guitar / vocals

THE HUNDRED PARISHES SOCIETY - www.hundredparishes.org.uk
There are thousands of village halls in England, owned and run by local councils, churches or independent
trustees for the benefit of local communities. The Hundred Parishes has its share, with a great variety of
buildings and history.
Probably the oldest is in Hunsdon: it dates from the 15th century and was once a school. Barley’s 16th-
century building - once a guildhall - still looks ancient, while Westmill has a converted 17th-century barn.
Ashdon claims to have the only local thatched village hall: that element of the building, once a house, dates
from the 17th century. Radwinter’s hall is part of village redevelopment in the arts-and-crafts style after a
disastrous fire in 1874.
Many purpose-built village halls appeared after the First World War, funded either by public subscription or a
generous benefactor and often built as a lasting memorial to those who died in the conflict. Ugley’s hall was
built in 1920, funded largely by the local Tennant family, while Blackmore End in Wethersfield benefited from
the generosity of Samuel Courtauld.
Several halls have been converted from their original use: Wethersfield has a second village hall, part of what
was once a brewery. Little Chesterford, Hempstead and Stocking Pelham have found new life for their old
schools, while Chrishall and Stebbing re-purposed former churches. Hildersham’s village hall started life as a
First World War army surgical ward and was brought from Cambridge.
Our village halls are greatly valued and used by all manner of community groups for meetings, sport and
exercise, pre-school activities, cultural performances, quizzes, exhibitions, farmers markets and so on. We see
new village halls appearing quite regularly, for example at Great Hormead in 2015 and Duxford in 2020.
Some are now referred to as “community centres” but we all know what they mean!
Ken McDonald, Secretary
Hatfield Regis Local History Society Exhibition
The society held a very successful exhibition over the Jubilee weekend as part of the village celebrations.
Using the Hall in the United Reformed Church, a varied and interesting display was created of items from the
Society’s own archives as well as items loaned by villagers.
A selection of village magazines (the earliest from 1894) showed the varying designs through the years and an
extensive archive of programmes and other Heath Players’
memorabilia told the history of the village’s drama group.
There were many local photos and postcards of both Hatfield Heath
and Hatfield Broad Oak and displays featuring the Football Club,
military service of two members of the Bruty family, the Marauder
plane crash and memorabilia from Pierce Williams in Hatfield Broad
Oak.
Some of the earliest items on view were some deeds of properties in
Broad Oak and on the Heath (including the late lamented Stag public
house). The earliest of these dated back to the mid 1700s and members of the society had carefully
transcribed the documents from the ancient documents.
Chairman David Parish was on hand throughout the exhibition to
explain the Society’s objections to the proposed development of the
POW camp site and a selection of historical documents (including
1901 census records) were available for visitors to peruse.
One of the most popular features for many was the display of school
photos and much time was spent identifying the faces of years past!
Mark Ratcliff, vice-chairman and organiser of the exhibition paid
tribute to the many helpers and donors of items who made the
exhibition possible as well as the support of those who attended. He
said “It was lovely to see some many people at the exhibition and see the obvious enthusiasm for the history
of the area. We hope to mount further exhibitions and displays in the future, as we have plenty more in our
archives that it would be fantastic to share with the community.”

On 20th May, Jenny Howell hosted a charity morning of cake, coffee, tea
and chat all in aid of my marathon fundraising for Leukaemia Care. It
was wonderful to see so many people come along and support this great
cause, meet people and make new friends. I’d like to say a big thank you to
Jenny for hosting and organising so much of the event and to all those who
attended. It was a fun, friendly morning and we raised around £800 from
the cakes and the raffle. What a great result. We couldn’t have done it
without you, Hatfield Heath! - Ana Scott
You can still donate!

This year's special Jubilee Festival Fun Run was a huge success. After 3 years absence it felt good to be back, to
checking out the course, sourcing our volunteers & inviting youngsters & adults to join us for a little bit of
exercise before heading over to the main attractions of our Festival. Although the weather was damp & chilly, they
were perfect conditions for the runners & walkers. We had 50 children running & walking the 1.5 miles with their
families and 15 adults running & walking 2 laps of the very pleasant scenic, undulating course around Friars Lane.
We want to say a huge Thank You to our 12 volunteers, of whom are our running friends & family & village
resident Ellie & new resident Julie Wilson, we are very grateful for your guiding & keeping everyone safe.
And Thank You to all 65 runners for joining us. We had great pleasure in presenting awards to the first three
finishers in the girls, (pictured below), boys, (pictured below), ladies & men categories...
